What makes a good puzzle game? Over the years, we've seen literally thousands, and some of the twists on the genre the talented indie community has come up with may surprise you! From a reverse escape game to a factory filled with robots and much, much more, here are 12 of the best puzzle games you might not have played.
Sometimes the biggest challenges come from games with very few rules. It's the principle behind Simple Machine's latest puzzle, in which you combine matching numbered tiles until there's only one. It's simple, it's clever, and it's difficult in the best of ways.
The clock is ticking, the fuse is burning, and the stakes are high... You're the only bomb technician in town who can defuse the logic puzzles in ShellBlast Forever, a mobile version of the Minesweeper-esque downloadable game by Vertigo Gaming. As you slide the SDUs around the grid, can you tell which tiles are deadly triggers from the numerical clues provided?
The early morning car ride, the smelly waiting room, and scary needles are the worst part of a trip to the doctor. Let's face it; robots have it easy when it comes to medical care! Defective 'droids get their medicine in quite a shocking way in the mobile word game RoboFlu. You think electroshock therapy wouldn't be the best method of healing, but those viruses need to be purged somehow, right?
180 might not offer a lot in the way of innovation, but you'll be hard-pressed to put this casual arcade puzzler for your mobile device down! Match coins in colours to clear space for as long as you can, and tap coins to flip them over and set up big chains. Simple, colourful, and oh so addicting.
A visitor stopped by JIG HQ over the weekend and left us a challenge and we're going to give away a few prizes to those who figure it out. Take a look at the interrogation transcript and see what details you can wring out of his vague responses. If you can find the review page on which he hid his egg, submit its location AND an explanation of Mr. Bunny's code.
The standard edition of Mystery Case Files: 13th Skull is out, so to celebrate, we're giving away copies of the game all weekend long! All you have to do is solve our little hidden object puzzle. Think you can manage it?
We've finally made it to the final day of the Humble Indie Scramble! Over the past week we've given away several Humble Indie Bundles to competitors who have the wits to unscramble a medley of anagrammed game titles and the good fortune to win a random drawing. We've promised some tricky twists for the big finale, and today, we're ready to deliver.
After nearly a week of giving away Humble Indie Bundles, we're finally starting to wind down the contest. We'll post the grand finale puzzle tomorrow, and we promise it will be significantly bigger than anything else significantly smaller than it. In the meantime, we've got another puzzle for you today.
If you've been playing along with the Humble Indie Scramble so far this week, you're probably familiar with the drill by now. Split one anagram with three game titles, enter for a shot at a Humble Indie Bundle, which are no longer available so your best chance at getting one is with us. But from here on in, expect some twists.
The second installment of the Humble Indie Bundle might not be available on the Internet's store shelves anymore, but we're still looking to give away a few more copies! If you want a shot at a shiny new Bundle, all you have to do is split the muddled-up anagram into three titles of games we've featured in the past and send in your response. We've had three winners so far this week, and you could be the next!
Want to win a Humble Indie Bundle on our tab? While the bundles are no longer available, we managed to scarf up a few before the deadline and now giving you the opportunity to win one. And we've got a puzzle with your name on it. That is, of course, if your name happens to be Scramble.
Day two of our mixed up Humble Indie Bundle giveaway has arrived. We've got a new puzzle for you to tackle today. Remember, your goal is to find the three game titles muddled up in the anagram that correspond to the clues. Think you know the answer? Send the three game titles to us and you could win a santa's pack chock full of great games.
How would you like a chance to get your hands on the Humble Indie Bundle for free? As luck would have it, we've got a few copies we'd like to give away. As misfortune would have it, there's a wicked little puzzle standing in the way. (Don't worry, it's a fun one though.)
Doodle Devil is here and, as promised, we have it here first! The sequel to the amazingly popular Doodle God is now out in a Flash version for all those without a smartphone. More Doodle God is never a bad thing, and even though Doodle Devil doesn't reinvent the alchemical wheel, there's still plenty to love. The series distills a very basic element found at the core of all video games: exploration and discovery.
Games Featured:
- • Ancient Quest of Saqqarah
- • Puzzle Hero
Sometimes a formula just works, and in the case of the tried-and-true matching setup, we've seen it work time and time again. This edition of Weekend Download highlights a few new games that take the matching to a new level with interesting twists on the old convention.
This is one game that will destroy your social life. Join numbered blocks together to add their amounts and cause blocks with the same digits to vanish. As more bricks rise from the bottom of the screen, you must frantically add them together to keep the stack from reaching the top. It's more puzzle gaming enjoyment than I've had in a very long time, and the pacing is perfect to keep you motivated but not frustrate you. Nice visuals and really catchy music are extra special bonuses.
Wooty tooty flip-bam-booty! We hosted our 2nd Flash Game Design Competition! Yes, the type of entry we were looking for was the same as what we called for during our first competition.
