Ever since the launch of the original Nintendo Game Boy, handheld gaming has been a popular form of entertainment. Arguably, it's what led the cell phone revolution as well as mobile gaming. Handheld gaming is a bit frowned upon in public, but when you have to go somewhere mundane, you won't be bored either. Modern gaming systems allow for flexibility, like the Nintendo Switch. Just unplug the Switch and attach the Joy-Con to its sides. In short, you can take it anywhere. The gaming experience is almost identical in both modes. The best part is that you don't even have to pause your game.
Popular Systems
Most of these you will already know, but we also wanted to feature the Asus Rog Ally, which is actually quite a nice low-end choice for a handheld console. You may remember some failed handheld gaming consoles like Caanoo or Pandorda, but these are actually supported well and have cross-compatibility with other non-handheld consoles.
Nintendo Switch. The undisputed king.
The Nintendo Switch is the best portable console because it is actually a hybrid. At home, you just have to attach it to its dock. Then connect it to the TV and play from your favorite couch. But when you have to go somewhere, you won't be bored either. Just unplug the Switch and attach the Joy-Con to its sides. In short, you can take it anywhere. The gaming experience is almost identical in both modes. The best part is that you don't even have to pause your game.
Steam Deck. The versatility of a PC.
The Steam Deck allows you to play the huge library of PC games in a portable way. In technical terms, it is very similar to the Nintendo Switch in terms of design. Indeed, it is horizontal and has a central screen with buttons on its sides. In addition, it has an HDMI docking station to connect it to a large screen. However, it differs in that it has a much faster CPU and GPU. It can also run thousands of titles from the web's largest and most popular PC gaming platform, Steam.
Asus ROG ALLY
Asus ROG ALLY is the latest release in the Asus series of portable gaming devices. It is a handheld console that offers an unprecedented portable gaming experience. It combines the power of a high-performance gaming PC with the convenience and portability of a handheld console.
Some of the Best Titles
Most handheld games are ported to multiple systems and their flexibility is what helps them reach a mass audience. So there are thousands of titles to choose from, with more and more releasing every day. The following is a list of 3 titles that we absolutely love.
Super Mario Bros. Wonder
Ok, we know, this doesn't come out until October but we couldn't help ourselves. It's been nearly 10 years since we had a 2 dimensional Mario game and the internet is freaking out about this one. Just from the early released videos and streamers, this game looks like everything we expect from Nintendo and we couldn't be more excited. That's not to day that the 3D Mario games are somehow "less than", but they do fundamentally feel like different games.
Poker Champion: Texas Hold'em
On the low-end of the price divide, this popular poker game takes everything you love about playing cards and takes into an accessible Switch game. It offers poker tournaments, full language support, and the ability to earn trophies and rewards. Similar to the poker boom of online real money play, this game gives the look and feel of that sort of competition, without the woes of losing your shirt. There are several versions of this for mobile gaming as well, but if you would prefer to play on the Switch, this is probably your best bet without having to worry about being spammed by ads all the time.
Stray
Stray broke the internet when it came out, mainly because almost everyone loves cats, but also due to its impressive worldbuilding and intuitive puzzle-platforming features. Stray is a stylistic gem as well, with a dark and ominous feel. The game's compatibility with the Steam Deck's controls is seamless, and despite its visually appealing design, Stray manages to steer clear of any significant performance problems on the portable hardware. Because it's an indie game and had a low budget - there has been reported instances of stuttering, it's worth noting that this occurs even on powerful desktop PCs. By adjusting your effects quality setting from High to Medium, you can easily maintain a frame rate of at least 30fps.
Amazing. There are other variations of this for mobile gaming as well, but if you prefer to play on the Switch, this is definitely your best chance not to be bombarded with adverts all the time.
