Hoshi Saga Ringoame

JayA remarkably fun and inventive puzzle game series we won't ever get tired of seeing new installments of, Hoshi Saga returns to give us more opportunities to find the hidden star in each of the 25 brand new levels. Yoshio Ishii of Nekogames has created more full-color artwork for Hoshi Saga Ringoame, the latest iteration of the popular and revered series.

Hoshi Saga RingoameAs before, you are to figure out what it takes to find the star hidden within each screen. Feel free to click around and explore each level to find the solution. Some will have you clicking, some dragging, some standing on your head. Ok, well maybe not literally, but you'll have to use your brain and hand-eye coordination skills to solve all the puzzles contained therein. The puzzles are not very difficult this time around, again, but you will never the less have fun figuring them all out. If you're new to the series, this is an excellent warm-up exercise to get you used to the sort of puzzles seen throughout the series.

  • The star is in the bottom right box. Click and drag the box to the x-ray machine to see the star.

  • Screenshot.

Level 47

  • Behind the shape with the cutouts is the star on a chain. Drag the shape quickly to the right or left and the star will swing out from behind.

  • Screenshot.

Level 50

  • If you pick up the green box by the corner and turn it over, a medium sized green box will fall out.

  • Pick up the medium green box by the corner and turn it over to drop out the small green box.

  • Rotate the large green box until the star tips are at the top.

  • Rotate the medium green box and drop it on the large green box to form the star shape.

  • Now rotate the small green box and drop it on the medium to complete the star.

WALKTHROUGH

Stage 26

Click and drag to the left until the shadow on the ground makes a star.

Stage 27

Click and drag the cube with the triangle on it so it falls into the space above the rest of the star.

Stage 28

Move the chains (using the dots above) so that the pieces of star fit together.

Stage 29

Click and drag left and right until you uncover the star.

Stage 30

Move your mouse over the flame in the middle to light your candle. Now use your candle to light the candles at the points of the star.

Stage 31

Click and drag the bottom section to the left or right until you find the rest of the star.

Stage 32

The picture is divided into sections which flip like pages in a book. Click the various sections on the right or left side until you've revealed all parts of the star.

Stage 33

Click and drag the magnifying glass until its bottom left edge meets the bottom left edge of the little detached section of star. That should magnify it, revealing the whole star.

Stage 34

For this one, your cursor needs to be in the bottom left section of the screen. Start at about where that inner corner of the star would be, and move out towards the edge of the screen.

Stage 35

Pull the zipper down.

Stage 36

Click the backs of the L-shaped boards (top half of the screen) repeatedly until they fall over.

Stage 37

When you click, the little kids jump. Click at the right time so that they climb the stairs.

Stage 38

Slide the thin sections up and down until they make whole stars.

Stage 39

Hover your cursor over the two blocks up top. Notice that there is a spot on each that you can click. Click on one of those spots to reveal part of the star, then click again to make it fall. Repeat with the other half.

Stage 40

Click the very bottom of the screen and drag up, moving all the balls up at once.

Stage 41

Follow the strings to figure out where each piece of the star puzzle goes. Drag the dots to the correct U-shaped ports. Solution, if the top row is 1,2,3,4,5 and the bottom row is A,B,C,D,E:

1B, 2E, 3C, 4D, 5A

Stage 42

When you mouse over one of the shapes, it changes. Hover near the first section of tube (where the shapes enter) for a while to make a long string of triangles. Then quickly mouse over the following sections, turning the triangles into squares, then pentagons, and finally stars.

Stage 43

Rotate the box clockwise twice so that the green section falls out. Keep rotating the box until the star falls out.

Stage 44

There is a bubble at the top of the screen, which you control with your mouse. Move the bubble so that it's over one of the X's, then click the bubble so it drops onto the X. Repeat for all the other X's.

Stage 45

Think of these as dominoes. Your goal is to make the rightmost domino fall off the edge. Set up the dominoes so they will knock that last one off, then click the hand to the left to knock them over. (You might have to do this a couple times to make sure the finger hits the first domino.)

Stage 46

This is an X-ray machine. Drag the blocks behind the screen in the middle until you find the star.

Stage 47

Grab the rectangle and swing it back and forth until you see the star.

Stage 48

Grab the biggest block (top center) and move it aside.

Stage 49

Click the floor (around the cat) to flip it upwards, revealing a yellow circle which was illuminating the cat cutout. Move the circle around to the left, then click the back wall to flip the floor down again. Keep moving the circle around until you light up all of the star.

Stage 50

Pick the box up and spin it around until another box falls out. Then pick up the new box and spin it until another box falls out. Stack them on top of each other until you get a complete star.

Just like the last one, this is so easy it's disappointing. The first three games had a perfect difficulty level; they weren't mind-meltingly obscure, but at least they took a little thought.

These levels, on the whole, weren't even as nice to look at as the previous set. A few of them (26, 29, and 37 in particular) were nice, but otherwise it just felt... average. I mean, it's not ugly (of course), but the one thing that made Ringo playable was that it was a consistently beautiful game. This one is even easier than Ringo and not as pretty.

If the next Hoshi Saga game doesn't step up the difficulty, I'll be sorely disappointed. The original three were genius. Near-perfect, in my opinion. I really have no clue why Yoshio Ishii decided to start making them so easy.

This is the first time I've even heard of the series, but I enjoyed it quite a bit. I'm glad I encountered the 'easy' ones first, but I found it enjoyable simply as a series of interesting graphics and toys, with a not-so-difficult goal in each one. I'll definitely be glad to go back and look at the others, and challenge myself a bit more, too!

Stage 40, however, wasn't very fun for me, and stumbling upon the answer extracted a "what, really?" rather than an the desirable "oh, right!". Here's some progressively more useful hints:

The balls aren't theonly thing you can drag around

The other thing you can click on doesn't look like it should be a 'thing' at all.

The bottom part of the border is actually an object that can be moved

This one was way too easy. With a few exceptions that I went back to later (25, 40) and a single exception that almost made me ragequit (41) it was a nice easy game. Almost nice enough to make me overlook the fact that stage 39 has a three-star difficulty and yet all you do is click twice on each of the incredibly obvious crusher-things. Plus clicking on both of them in the same cycle makes it glitch.

You've probably realized this, but you have to pull the strings to rotate the circles so they form the star.

The correct spot is near the lower-left corner, directly below the center of the large circle on the left tip of the star.

And for those stuck on 42:

Every time you hover the mouse over a shape, it will change into another shape, from circles to triangles to squares to pentagons to stars. Just hover the mouse over a particular shape four times before it reaches the end of the pipe to clear the stage.

Drag your mouse slowly from right to left a few times. When you hit the right spot the shadow will look like a star and the shapes will collapse down to fill the shadow. If you move slowly it will work.

When I first saw the sliding puzzle I said "Oh no WAY" as my brain wildly forgot that this was marked with half a star. And then I clicked the big square and just broke the thing apart and started laughing.

Overall I too miss the more challenging Hoshi Saga games. He must have some reason for deliberately making these so much easier though.

  • Notice the green strip at the top of the blue square? You want to rotate the blue square so that the green strip is at the bottom.

  • Click on either of the arrow circles twice to rotate the blue square. Notice that the green box that drops out has a yellow stripe.

  • Click on the arrow circle at the bottom left of the blue box to rotate the shapes so that the yellow stripe is now at the "bottom".

  • The yellow box that drops out has a brown line, you now want that brown line at the bottom.

  • Click on the arrow circle at the top left of the blue box to rotate the shapes so that the brown line is at the bottom.

  • The brown box has a purple stripe that you want at the bottom. Click on the circle arrow in the lower left of the blue box to rotate.

  • Now the purple shape has a blue line at the bottom. Click on the circle arrow on the lower right of the blue box to rotate.

  • The final small blue box has an open edge. Click on the circle arrow on the upper right of the big blue box to rotate.

  • Screenshot.

Level 44

  • Notice that the bubble at the top will follow your cursor to the left or right.

  • Move until the bubble is directly over one "X" on the board.

  • Now move the cursor up to the bubble and click on the bubble to drop it.

  • If you aimed right, the bubble will "paint" the area around the X pink.

  • Continue to aim and drop the bubble on the Xs until the star is formed.

  • The bubble will cause the shape to rotate, so if an X is in a place where you can't drop the bubble, drop the bubble on the star tips to rotate.

  • Screenshot.

Level 45

  • Notice the hand with the pointed finger at the left of the screen, on the bar where the yellow shapes are.

  • Think of the yellow shapes as dominoes.

  • Space the shapes out with one at the very right of the bar.

  • Click on the finger and it will push the first shape.

  • If you spaced them correctly, they will fall like dominoes, forcing the one on the far right to fall and slide down the slope.

  • Screenshot.

Level 46

  • The center gray box is an x-ray machine that can look into any box you drag behind it.

Level 48

  • There are several smaller boxes with Chinese characters (Japanese characters?) on them. The largest box, in the upper middle, is hiding the star.

  • Click and drag that shape down to reveal the star.

  • Screenshot.

Level 49

  • Click on the yellow cat and the "floor" will raise up.

  • Notice that the cat is a cut out and that the yellow dot was underneath.

  • Move the yellow dot to the left of the floor, then click on the top to drop it down.

  • Now you can see the star. It may take several tries to get the yellow dot in the exact right area to illuminate the entire star cutout.

  • Screenshot.

AaronzDad,

I thought they were reversed at first, too. After the fourth attempt, I realized that the tendrils are actually wrapping around the screen, rather than curling back around and coming in the same side.

WALKTHROUGH

Hey Yoshio, if you happen to read this, I keep getting an error when loading a new level -- the "number of bytes left" turns into -385 (negative) and freezes, and doesn't change. The only way to fix is to reload the page. Fortunately it does remember my progress, but, you know, you might want to look at that.

[It's due to the server being overloaded as the game was just released early this morning. Try one of the alternate links provided, or wait a few days for the traffic to die down a bit. -Jay]

Beautiful as usual, but much too easy this time. Where are the challenging puzzles? The Five-Stars? Really, if it's this disappointing from now on, please stop making more Hoshi Saga and start something new that's at least moderately challenging!

Done. The only one I needed to check here for was Level 40... And for level 41, I noticed that

the left and right ones were reversed, so I just switched the ones that led to each.

Not nearly as hard as some in earlier iterations, but nice and casual.

meester man, no such thing happened for me.

Paul, about Stage 42:

You have to be kind of quick with your mouse. Whenever you touch one of the shapes, it changes. Start by hovering where the circles emerge, and stay there until you have all triangles. Then quickly move to the next section and turn some triangles into squares, then go to the next section and make some pentagons. If you can catch one of the pentagons in the last section before they fall out, you should find a star.

For those wondering, the title of the game (Hoshi Saga Ringoame) , (星探-檎飴) literally means Star Search Candied Apple. or something like that. Why Ishii didn't just go on to Hoshi Saga Orenjii (orange) is beyond me though. :P

Hmm. Neat ideas, BUT:

1/3 of the levels are insultingly easy (the zipper @ 35? come on...)

1/3 of the levels are frustratingly impossible (too much to try or no way to guess the correct option unless you already know it or just get lucky -- impossible to figure out logically by less than truly lengthy trial-and-error. examples: 26, 34, 40)

The last third are probably about right, very nice and yet not too frustrating or easy. Honestly, that's more than I see from many puzzle games lately, so I have to give them credit.

just finished, now that 49 is willing to load. And it's definitely too easy, same as the last one.

26, 34, 41, and 42 were about right for easy-to-middling puzzles. I would have given them all 1-2 stars. Why 39 rates 3 stars I do not understand. 40 was hard but I don't like that it relies on a trick. Everything else was just too simple. It didn't require thought, just mousing over until you found the right spot to click. 32, 44, and 47 had nice concepts, though.

This game is so ludicrously and insultingly easy compared to the others that it doesn't feel like the same game. Why were almost half the puzzles one and 1/2 star difficulty? Why is it I completed this in less than half an hour? Why weren't there any 3.5 or above difficulty puzzles? Why was the last puzzle

The one where you just simply lift boxes

so easy? Half the puzzles feel like how-to-play puzzles, and I could understand if the whole series was like this, but they weren't. It took me only a minute max on any of these.

Over all, if the next one is this easy, I probably won't bother, because not only were the puzzles easy, they were short.

Hey I completed all the Hoshi Saga games so I hope I can help with the problems I just read.

level 40 : just 1 trick, grab the surface with your mouse and lift it up. The star is actually behind the circles!

level 45: Put all the bricks after each other with a space in between. It's just like the game "Domino". Then click on the pointing finger. You now have completed the level.

For my money, this was hands down the most beautiful installment in the Hoshi Saga series. The forest level and the cat-and-moon level alone take it to #1, visually speaking.

And I for one enjoyed the more relaxed difficulty level. All the people complaining and threatening to stop playing the series (I'm sure Yoshio Ishii is terrified) if it doesn't get harder next time should take a moment to think about someone other than themselves... and maybe remember that the web is chock-full of browser games that are plenty hard, hard enough that more people would find them unplayable than would both enjoy and beat the game. A game that's "too" easy for some people is accessible to more players.
