Cavesweeper It advertises itself as a mix between Minesweeper and a roguelike dungeon crawler, but Quikding's Cavesweeper isn't quite either... it's something all its own. In it, you're tasked with exploring a single, linear cave, equipping weapons and armor you find within, collecting gold to spend on various goodies, completing various quests, and slaying all sorts of monsters.

Windforge Windforge is going to blow your mind. On the surface it sounds like a garden variety Terraria or Minecraft clone with a steampunk coat of paint. Spend an hour with the game and you'll realize it's so very much more than that. Windforge is a sidescrolling role playing game that lets you build and fly an airship and craft tons of items, weapons and parts. Everything in the environment is destructible, giving you a tremendous sense of freedom and making just about every other exploration game look restrictive by comparison.

Block Legend Block Legend is unfairly beguiling. We say this because it's so deceptively simple on the surface, yet its design allows for play sessions that never stop. And that's good, because you honestly won't want to. Created by Alvin Phu, Block Legend feels a lot like 10000000 mixed with Puzzle Quest (you know, back when it was good). It combines samegame with an RPG, allowing you to match tiles to attack, defend and level up. And it does so without ads, in-app purchases, or any other crazy gimmicks!

Candy Quest 3: Edge of Sweetness What do you do when doom threatens your sweet land of sugary goodness? You hone your skills and fight back! Play as one of three classes, each with different strengths, as you fight your way through mysterious evil to save the world.

The Banner Saga The sun hangs unmoving in the sky, and the threat of the creatures known as the dredge puts even more strain on an uneasy truce between the humans and the giants known as varl. In this stunning and challenging turn-based strategic RPG/visual novel, the choices you make determines who lives and dies as you take an epic journey that will change the face of the world and the people who live in it.

DROD: King Dugan's Dungeon Lite - Episode 4 Beethro Budkin has been going down, down, down, for a while now, clearing out all the critters and baddies in King Dugan's dungeon, and he's finally reached floors unlucky thirteen through sixteen.

Ernesto - A Quick RPG Part strategic puzzle, part turn-based RPG, this latest idea from Daniel Benmergui has you picking a path through a dangerous dungeon on a grid filled with enemies, items, and traps on your way to take down a god. Though short and straight-forward, it's fun while it lasts and has a ton of potential.

Loot Hero The kingdom needs a hero to slay a dragon, but you need cash a lots of it! In this simple arcade action RPG, you'll charge through five levels of enemies, nabbing all the coin they drop and using it to upgrade your equipment. Though definitely short and nearly TOO simple, great visuals and simple fun still make it addictive while it lasts.

Valthirian Arc 2 Your kingdom needs you! In this unexpected follow-up to Lucidrine's 2010 game, you take control of a new academy created to develop and train students into the heroes the land needs. Though perhaps too simple and repetitive for some, a stunning visual style and casually engaging gameplay make it well worth checking out.

The Gold Factory Inspired by Candy Box!, gamehelp16's oddball clicktoy starts out slow as you toil in a factory producing gold bars, but make enough (and please your boss) and you'll discover there's an entire world of secrets, surprises, challenges and puzzles out there to uncover!

Doctor Who: Legacy It's not the Doctor Who game you may have been hoping for, but this free match-3 RPG for iOS and Android offers a ton of unlockable characters and battles with enemies from the show. With gorgeous artwork, simple and addictive gameplay, and a lack of the usual free-to-play frustrations, Doctor Who: Legacy is still enjoyable if not quite what you'd expect.

Standstill Girl In this compelling and creative indie RPG, you play stubborn, silent Alice, a human girl living in Shadeling Town in the Land of Time. When the great clock's hands shatter one day and brings the Land of Life to a frozen halt, Alice must brave its dangers, and her past, to set things right.

Starbound (Beta) Chucklefish's hotly anticipated indie sci-fi sandbox sim finally reaches playable beta. Fight, mine, craft, and explore your way, along or with friends, through a boundless procedurally generated universe aboard your own spaceship. When each planet has its own randomly created monsters and environments, you never know what you'll find.

Fallen London We covered Failbetter Games' eerie and elegant text-based MMO RPG three years ago when it was called Echo Bazaar, and now the game is bigger and better than ever. In a vast subterranean city where secrets are currency, Hell has an embassy, and murder and romance go hand in hand, create a character and take part in tons of unlockable storylines as you grow.

Famaze If you love dungeon-crawling, Famaze is an easy recommendation that does a lot without a lot of bells and whistles and complicated mechanics you'll be able to pick up easily... even if putting it down will be a different matter entirely.

Crystal Story 2 Set years after the game that won the community's vote for 2011 RPG of the Year, this turn-based RPG starts off with a literal bang as our dragon-boy hero falls from the sky like a meteorite on a quest to find an Oracle. But that's just the tip of the iceberg when he falls in with a certain mercenary group! With animated cutscenes, voice acting, and likable characters, this game offers a lot and is definitely worth a look.

Valdis Story: Abyssal City In this fast-paced stunning metroidvania indie action adventure, the fight against a demonic army takes you beneath the waves when your ship is sunk and you find yourself in a mysterious underwater world caught between two opposing forces. Though somewhat hard to pick up and not without its flaws, it's still an engaging, gorgeous combat-centric game fans of the genre should check out.

Quiz RPG: World of Mystic Wiz When Francis Bacon famously said that knowledge is power, he probably didn't mean that knowing trivia answers would grant you magical powers. But that's how things work in Quiz RPG: World of Mystic Wiz, a trivia game for Android that blends elements of roleplaying and card games. Control a group of five spirits in your various quests as an apprentice wizard, and turn your trivia answers into bolts of lightning or jets of water or fireballs. Postmortem 1897. The country of Galicia has been wracked by conflict between opposing economic and ideological factions. They meet under one roof during an uneasy time of peace. As an avatar of death, you must take the life of one, and live with the consequences in Postmortem, an adventure game by Jakub Kasztalski. A serious text-heavy work, but those intruigued by intrigue should find it quite intriguing indeed.

World's End Chapter 1 The heroes of this turn-based strategy RPG are surly, drunken, rude, violent, and more than a little bit potty-mouthed... but then, so is everyone else in this crumbling society. Though it does take a while to get the ball rolling, however, World's End Chapter 1 eventually reveals itself to be an extremely ambitious piece of storytelling and gaming in general.

Teacher Story Teacher Story is a gorgeous, fun, funny game with glimpses of serious cleverness. As the name suggests, you play a teacher who's trying to stuff his classes full of knowledge, but first needs to literally beat the stupidity out of them to get through. Though hampered by an aggressive and restrictive free-to-play model, genuinely strategic combat and a gorgeous presentation still make this one worth checking out.

Arena Quest RPG (demo) Arena Quest RPG is a demo of an upcoming action RPG hybrid by gfactoriser. It puts all the ingredients of an RPG into a big pot, then boils it until only the delicious concentrated broth remains. Cube World (alpha) Though still in its Alpha stage, this indie exploration-based action RPG is coming for your free time in a big way. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic So, Star Wars. From what we can tell it's some movie about a guy named Jar Jar who has a speech impediment but somehow joins "the force" and saves a clown from living on the dark side of that metal space moon thing. We're a little sketchy on the details, but what we're not sketchy on is Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic and how unbelievably amazing that game was ten years ago and how it's still epic today. Originally released back in 2003, KotOR defined the western RPG and managed to secure a spot as one of the most epic modern role playing games ever released. Trial of the Clone After your rather unceremonious birth, you're sent to the temple of the Silene Monks, where you choose whether to be a medic, a warrior or an engineer. From there, it's up to you to make the right choices to fulfill your destiny and, most crucially, not die. But Trial of the Clone is more than a simple choose-your-own-adventure. Along the way you'll gain stat points, weapons and items, which you can keep track of via a built-in D&D-style Adventure Sheet. These come to play in battles which pop up occasionally and affect the course of the story. Battles are pretty simple: You deal damage to your opponent based on your given stats plus a random number from 0 to 3, and then your opponent does the same — the last one standing wins. Loss in a battle doesn't necessarily mean death; it may just mean being relocated to a different department (say, engineering, where physical strength, ability and charisma are less in demand).

Fairune Fairune is an action-puzzle RPG adventure much like the world where it is set: a place where illusion is reality and three spirit icons have gone missing, unlocking an evil scourge that generates monsters all over the realms. Instead of fighting, just walk over monsters and make your way across a maze-like retro environment, gathering the items you need to open new pathways until your ultimate goal: a showdown with three powerful bosses that will either end in victory or crushing defeat.

Bringing with it everything that made the original game a hit, Magicka: Wizards of the Square Tablet takes a slightly more action-oriented approach to the spell slinging arcade game. You still combine elements to cast various bits of magic that can harm enemies, yourself, and your teammates, but thanks to shorter levels and a new camera angle, it's now all about speed and strategy.

Hands of War 3 A kingdom stands poised to be torn apart as two of its would-be champions can't agree on a course of action... which is where you come in. In Axis Games' action-RPG adventure, choose a side and develop your character to be the hero the land needs and strike down all those who would come against you. Preferably with fireballs.

Nimble Quest The latest release from Pocket Planes developer NimbleBit, Nimble Quest drops the simulation formula in favor of a good old fashioned arcade game. And we're not kidding when we say "old fashioned". Nimble Quest is essentially the 40 year old game of Snake with a layer of RPG elements and free to play features draped on top. It's a very different experience than, say, Tiny Tower, but it's got that same level of simple charm we've come to expect from the studio.

Monster Loves You! It's a monster's life for you in this casual yet engaging indie simulation from Dejobaan Games! Going from a lowly morsel swimming in a vat of goop to (potentially) a respected elder that can influence the course of history, it's a whimsical, weird, and occasionally gross cross between a choose-your-own-adventure story and a visual novel that offers lots of replay value and laughs.

Legend of Dungeon Legend of Dungeon is a hybrid game from RobotLovesKitty that takes a roguelike and fuses it with a sidescrolling beat-em-up. While that may sound like mixing peanuts, cayenne peppers and bubblegum, the end result manages to take the best from both genres and leave you happily content adventuring through your dangerous but loot filled dungeon world. Just don't get too angry when you realize death in this game is permanent.

Avant-Garde Currently in playable alpha version, Avant-Garde is a narrative simulation/RPG where you play a burgeoning artist in the Paris art scene of the 19th century. Create your own artwork to sell or display in Le Salon, rub elbows with famed artists such as Manet, Monet, Picasso and Dali, and learn more about art history as you participate in impressionism, surrealism or even create your own art movements. While still incomplete, there is already much here to satisfy both the gamer and artist in you.

Epic Battle Fantasy 4 The gang is back... plus one! Our heroes from the last game have been helping themselves to everything not nailed down and on fire, but are they to blame for the theft of a village's prized jewel? In this quirky, cheeky turn-based RPG, bow-wielding Anna joins the team to conquer more enemies in challenging, strategic battles and face down even more weirdness than ever before.

Dungeon Plunder Dungeon Plunder is one of those mobile games whose name says it all. Created by Dominic Duchesne, this randomly generated roguelike ditches most of the story and gives you precisely what you want in an RPG: looting, equipment, stuff to fight, and experience to gain. The best part is that combat is handled not with a menu system but with a good old fashioned slot machine!

Vampire's Fall When I first ran across Vampire's Fall from Krime Media, I was on a quest for a new mobile RPG—any new mobile RPG—because, I admit it, I have an addiction. I really only downloaded the game because it was free, and for the first few rounds I wasn't really hooked. But then I started noticing the details. And trust me, there are a lot of details.

King Cashing 2 The dead walk!... and it's you! In this wonderfully bizarre hybrid of slot machine and RPG, take control of a zombie king and his undead army as they rampage across the country through a series of graphic novel-styled adventures, doing battle over the reels and amassing enough loot to buy more units and weapons to expand your arsenal. Simple, fun, and immediately addictive, with a great sense of surreal ghoulish charm.

Driftmoon When you find your village turned to stone and your father abducted for a strange gem in his possession, you have no choice but to set out and save the world. Provided Mittens the disembodied hand doesn't stop you. And you team up with a plucky firefly with a code of honour. And... well, you get the idea. A gorgeously creative and immersive light-hearted indie action-RPG with a built-in mod creation toolset, Driftmoon is an effortlessly fun and funny adventure that anyone can, and probably will, enjoy.

Sinjid: Shadow of the Warrior Infrarift Entertainment presents Shijid: Shadow of the Warrior, an arena RPG about a ninja completing the final stage of his training, in preparation of facing the warlord who killed his father. From 2005, the limitations of the then-current Flash engine take a little getting re-used to. However, as a browser RPG, its battles and gameplay were ahead of its time, and yet the limitations of the engines gives the game a charming retro quality.

All you need to do is tap the screen to move across the tiles, wiping away the darkness to reveal walls, doors, items, treasure, and an enemy or three (teeth gnashing, be careful!).

Band of Heroes Vertical shooter meets RPG? It's not as far-fetched as you'd think! Framed for a crime he didn't commit (not that he wasn't planning to) Josh the thief finds himself swept up in a battle for a magical gem and forced to gather a group of unlikely allies in this unique hybrid from IriySoft.

Anodyne Broom attack! Also, you might be trapped in a dream. Or some other sort of subconscious realm. It's tough to tell, but judging from the strange sights and the cryptic "as legend has foretold" messages from sages and statues, there's definitely something odd going on here. Anodyne from Sean Hogan and Jonathan Kittaka is an adventure through a melancholy world that plays out like a classic 16-bit RPG. It borrows some of the best micro-concepts from games like The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening, Yume Nikki, and even Earthbound, creating a world that's as innocent as it is moving and as dangerous as it is surreal.

DungeonDiary DungeonDiary by Windbell is an RPG mixed with a programming game. It sounds like an unusual combination, but the minute you get your hands on it you'll see the enormous potential it has. After your family suffered through a natural disaster, you're left with a massive debt and no way to pay it off. Except by going on adventures! Not a bad way to survive, until you realize that in order to get paid you'll collect more grasses and mushrooms than you knew existed, fight off hordes of bees and "sexy cats", and escort helpless citizens through the wilderness.

Elf Story You are Edwin, an ordinary kid, ready to beat your favorite game "The Legend of Hooligan" when, before you know it, you're lying unconscious on your bedroom floor. Paying homage to and parodying your favorite RPGs of old, this point-and-click adventure is a deep pool of satisfaction for those who love racking up awards for every success as well as failure, who delight in discovering the many ways to kill—or die—in an oozing, bloody chaos of body parts. It's not a game for everyone: painstakingly precise timing and the patience to restart after multiple deaths is requisite. While it's surprisingly short, Elf story overflows with engaging graphics, narration and action.

Puzzle and Dragons Puzzle and Dragons is a fusion of puzzle gameplay and Pokemon-like monster hunting, training and collecting. From the safety of your mobile device you get to manage a team of tiny elemental creatures who can be fused and evolved to become more powerful fighting machines. When your crew is ready to roll, head into the dungeon where you'll battle enemies by swapping gems on a Bejeweled-like grid. It's an almost perfect blend of puzzle matching and role playing, streamlined to be casual friendly without removing too much of the team management bits we love to obsess over.

Middens After playing John Clowder's Middens, you might ask yourself the following question: what just happened? Calling this adventure/RPG "surreal" is a bit like saying a hike to the moon would be a bit of a trek. You start off with a talking gun who reminds you that each time you pull the trigger, its tongue will be close enough to lick your nails. Then you're dropped in the Rift, a place where... well, who knows what's going on there. The surprising part is Middens actually begins to make sense after a while, though your first experience with the game will be filled with delightful, bewildered confusion.

Enola Prelude All you need is a sword on your back and revenge in your heart to be a hero in this combat-centric RPG from JIMP and Grindhead Games. Venturing outside the city walls in search of the monster that killed your father, you'll slice, dice, and magic-fisherize your way through a series of colourful battles in this simple but fun title.

Pokémon Tower Defense 2: Generations The next chapter in Sam Otero's fan-made spin on the popular Pokemon franchise has arrived! RPG meets tower-defense as you are free to manually explore the world, hunting for and capturing Pokemon in the field as a boy or girl, and ultimately discovering the truth behind the strange Shadow Pokemon while you save the world... again! Homage or imitation? That's up to you to decide.

The Book of Legends Here's a tip. When it comes to ancient demons, send the most qualified person for the job to do it right. Not the person nearest at hand to slap a bandaid on the problem. Jordan, a powerful but lazy and opportunistic warrior, manages to mess up his quest to put an ancient evil back into slumber in the worst way, and suddenly finds himself facing the unwelcome task of saving the world through actual hard work and adventure in this enormous, vibrant, and frequently funny indie RPG.

Rawr When an evil businessman wants to take possession of a forest that's beloved by the town, it's up to you to stop him... by training up a horrifying beast of mass destruction in this bizarre but addictive training/combat simulation with a fantastic visual style and a surreal premise.

Middle Manager of Justice Double Fine Productions knows the spreadsheet is mightier than the death ray, but only when it has some serious super power to back it up! Hire, train, and manage a squad of elite superheroes from the ground up as they handle the day-to-day task of fighting crime and more in this fun and funny free simulation for iOS.

Red Rogue Available in action-RPG or classic turn-based flavour, this moody roguelike from Aaron Steed and music maestro Nathan Gallardo is deliberately mysterious. Descend into a dungeon searching for an amulet with your undead minion, figuring everything from the backstory to the deeper gameplay mechanics as you go. Oh, and tearing off the faces of your enemies and wearing them for bonuses and enchantments. Hooray!
