Frost Bite is a colorful new platforming adventure game from Nitrome, the creators of Scribble, Hot Air and many others. Your goal is to climb to the top of each stage, fending off monsters and collecting bonus items along the way. The best part is that you get a grappling gun you can use to latch onto platforms and swing yourself upwards. The gun doubles as a harpoon to attack enemies and gather items, making its use a central element in the game.
Each stage is filled with score-increasing items in the form of... ice cream! You can also collect letters that spell "BONUS" to get extra points at the end. The difficulty progresses fairly evenly, although it does take it some time for the stages to become a challenge. Use the first few levels to get used to the walking and grappling mechanic, as you'll need all of your skills towards the end.
Analysis: A colorful and great looking game, exactly what we've come to expect from Nitrome. While it's easy enough to pick up and play, Frost Bite's control scheme feels a little awkward at times. When walking, your character always faces the cursor, so half the time you're facing backwards. It doesn't affect the gameplay, it just feels strange. It also feels limiting not to be able to fire the grappling gun downwards.
Regardless of the small control inconveniences, Frost Bite is a fulfilling action game continuing Nitrome's tradition of good looking games. Click.

Well, I thought it was decent. I found it a bit too slow for my taste, such as when waiting for elevators to make their rounds, but it may just be my computer. I loved the art style as usual. I was expecting Hot Air 2 to be released soon, and I hope it does, because I'm really looking forward to it!

Cute game, fun music...nice diversion during lunch at work. Screens take way to long to load for a game like this. I gave up after a while. A game like this should load in less than 30 seconds.

I really like this game, especially because I am a fool for pixel-art at the moment. I am not much of a keyboard/mouse-acrobat, however, which is why I'm finding navigating the little Inuit over platforms slippery with ice too frustrating at stage 7.
It does work with my 2.0.0.2 version of FF (don't know about other versions though).

Hey this game is fun!

Playing this game reminds me of Mario+Bionic Commando (you know you remember this game!!!) with a Neo Geo feel. The game play is a little slow, but then again, I only played until the 3rd level. Does it get faster? In all this was a great flash game, kind of a blast from the past.

Game doesn't load in Safari 2.0.4 (419.3 for Intel).

Yes, Darius, it does get faster.
I finally made it to the tenth stage; there are some levels in which you have to dodge giant snowballs rolling down the hill you have to climb; you will also find levels that rely heavily on the handles (I can't remember the correct English word) that you can't jump on, so you'll be grappling your way up the mountain only relying on your trusty hook gun, with no place to rest. I can tell you, there is nothing contemplative about that ;).

Sorry for double posting, but I forgot the rotating morning stars in my list of hectic-klick-inducing obstacles/monsters...
I just completed the game (10th stage); for me, the hardest part was the middle stages (with the aforementioned morning stars).

I enjoyed Frost Bite quite a bit, being a sucker for old-school pixel graphics, but there were a few problems/bugs:
1) When you complete a level, the game doesn't save your progress if you quit immediately. You have to progress to the next level and *then* quit, or the map won't advance you to the next mountain. Quitting immediately means you start over from the beginning of the level you just finished.
2) Health boosts don't replenish when you die, which is a weird game design choice. If I didn't make it through the level *with* the health boosts, why do you think I'll make it *without* them? This is somewhat ameliorated by the fact that monsters don't replenish either, but that's no help with those levels that are mostly mechanically dangerous.
3) There are clickable links just outside the play area! My cursor wandered outside the boundaries for a moment, and I clicked something that took me to a new page. It opened in the same window, no less, so I lost my game-in-progress.
4) There's a death-bug in the last boss battle. I killed the final boss with one bar of health and one life remaining. Then, walking across the floor to the exit, game over! I thought it might be a fluke, but I tried again next time I beat him (with more than one life bar left!), and was able to injure myself just walking around on the bare floor. Perhaps shards from the falling icicles were still present? Regardless, it was quite an anticlimax.
There were a few more small issues, like edge detection (I fell through a corner between two diagonally adjacent crumbling-stone squares) and inconsistent hooking (sometimes your hook will catch only while you're jumping, sometimes not). But those are probably a lot harder to ferret out. And, overall, the game was playable and nostalgialicious.

I played this game and beat it. (After dying on level 7) So a few days later I came back and played it again and played it all the way through, and got to lvl 10 without dying. I died on lvl 10, though. But I got #9 on the Hi Scores. I also got all the bonuses up to there, so...yeah.

i thorght the game was good but it could have a bit more action like if you stand on something snow cold fall down and give you frost bite aka lose a life.

whoa, you're right! anonymous! i just got to perilous peak, and even the beginning looks ominous! i hope i get past it!
Posted by: BenBuzz | July 27, 2007 1:22 PM

Posted by: ariciara | August 12, 2007 7:56 PM
eskimo adventure
Im stuck on that one too!
Although here are some hints that may help you out a little:
Always click on the centre of the hooks,I know its a touch hard not to panic as soon as the first hook lifts you up, clicking everywhere to prevent falling into the spikes.
And also when you do fall, try moving to the left or the right with your arrow keys to stop yourself falling on the spikes. Lastly, dont give up! keep trying, and with practice and determination you will beat the level!
Best Of luck,
SahBeh

Posted by: ann | October 16, 2007 5:38 PM
seriously, how do you get past level 7???
Posted by: ksen | December 14, 2007 4:18 PM
I really need help getting past the of level 4 where you have to use the hooks. Any hints?
Posted by: StuckPlayer | January 12, 2008 12:46 AM
FIRST BOSS SPOILER!
This game is really nice, as all other nitrome games. The caterpillar boss is quite easy. Use the grappling hooks to jump over him when he comes forward, and shoot him from behind.
Though, i'm stuck on the last level (mount neverest), because i have no idea how to beat that last boss. I can get his eye out, but shooting him, shooting his eye, letting the icicles fall on him/his eye/jumping on his eye has no effect whatsoever. I wouldn't mind a spoiler.
