frostbite.gifJohnBFrost Bite is a colorful new platforming adventure game from Nitrome, the creators of Scribble, Hot Air and many others. Your goal is to climb to the top of each stage, fending off monsters and collecting bonus items along the way. The best part is that you get a grappling gun you can use to latch onto platforms and swing yourself upwards. The gun doubles as a harpoon to attack enemies and gather items, making its use a central element in the game.

Each stage is filled with score-increasing items in the form of... ice cream! You can also collect letters that spell "BONUS" to get extra points at the end. The difficulty progresses fairly evenly, although it does take it some time for the stages to become a challenge. Use the first few levels to get used to the walking and grappling mechanic, as you'll need all of your skills towards the end.

Analysis: A colorful and great looking game, exactly what we've come to expect from Nitrome. While it's easy enough to pick up and play, Frost Bite's control scheme feels a little awkward at times. When walking, your character always faces the cursor, so half the time you're facing backwards. It doesn't affect the gameplay, it just feels strange. It also feels limiting not to be able to fire the grappling gun downwards.

Regardless of the small control inconveniences, Frost Bite is a fulfilling action game continuing Nitrome's tradition of good looking games.

Well, I thought it was decent. I found it a bit too slow for my taste, such as when waiting for elevators to make their rounds, but it may just be my computer. I loved the art style as usual. I was expecting Hot Air 2 to be released soon, and I hope it does, because I'm really looking forward to it!

Cute game, fun music...nice diversion during lunch at work. Screens take way to long to load for a game like this. I gave up after a while. A game like this should load in less than 30 seconds.

Reply

Doesn't work in firefox for me

then i tried IE, it worked up untill level 3, then it kept loading, restarted but all i get is white ...

Reply

I thought it was cute, but I got stuck on level 2. Can't figure out how to get past the rock cliffs. Got onto them, but cant get past them. Fun game though.

If it doesnt work for you on nitrome, try going through miniclips.

Fun game, nice graphics and music, I just loved it!

I really like this game, especially because I am a fool for pixel-art at the moment. I am not much of a keyboard/mouse-acrobat, however, which is why I'm finding navigating the little Inuit over platforms slippery with ice too frustrating at stage 7.

It does work with my 2.0.0.2 version of FF (don't know about other versions though).

Hey this game is fun!

Playing this game reminds me of Mario+Bionic Commando (you know you remember this game!!!) with a Neo Geo feel. The game play is a little slow, but then again, I only played until the 3rd level. Does it get faster? In all this was a great flash game, kind of a blast from the past.

Reply

Game doesn't load in Safari 2.0.4 (419.3 for Intel).

Reply

Yes, Darius, it does get faster.

I finally made it to the tenth stage; there are some levels in which you have to dodge giant snowballs rolling down the hill you have to climb; you will also find levels that rely heavily on the handles (I can't remember the correct English word) that you can't jump on, so you'll be grappling your way up the mountain only relying on your trusty hook gun, with no place to rest. I can tell you, there is nothing contemplative about that ;).

Reply

Sorry for double posting, but I forgot the rotating morning stars in my list of hectic-klick-inducing obstacles/monsters...
I just completed the game (10th stage); for me, the hardest part was the middle stages (with the aforementioned morning stars).

Reply

It's been fun to play. I am stuck on the last stage of the tenth level. How do I kill the monster cyborg?!?

Reply

Kyle:
Hint...

You need to imitate Odysseus...

Solution...

Shoot the monster's eye at point blank range. The eye will fall out and go rolling around the room. While the monster stands stunned with pain and surprise, jump on the pupil (of the eye ;-). Repeat.

I enjoyed Frost Bite quite a bit, being a sucker for old-school pixel graphics, but there were a few problems/bugs:

1) When you complete a level, the game doesn't save your progress if you quit immediately. You have to progress to the next level and *then* quit, or the map won't advance you to the next mountain. Quitting immediately means you start over from the beginning of the level you just finished.

2) Health boosts don't replenish when you die, which is a weird game design choice. If I didn't make it through the level *with* the health boosts, why do you think I'll make it *without* them? This is somewhat ameliorated by the fact that monsters don't replenish either, but that's no help with those levels that are mostly mechanically dangerous.

3) There are clickable links just outside the play area! My cursor wandered outside the boundaries for a moment, and I clicked something that took me to a new page. It opened in the same window, no less, so I lost my game-in-progress.

4) There's a death-bug in the last boss battle. I killed the final boss with one bar of health and one life remaining. Then, walking across the floor to the exit, game over! I thought it might be a fluke, but I tried again next time I beat him (with more than one life bar left!), and was able to injure myself just walking around on the bare floor. Perhaps shards from the falling icicles were still present? Regardless, it was quite an anticlimax.

There were a few more small issues, like edge detection (I fell through a corner between two diagonally adjacent crumbling-stone squares) and inconsistent hooking (sometimes your hook will catch only while you're jumping, sometimes not). But those are probably a lot harder to ferret out. And, overall, the game was playable and nostalgialicious.

I played this game and beat it. (After dying on level 7) So a few days later I came back and played it again and played it all the way through, and got to lvl 10 without dying. I died on lvl 10, though. But I got #9 on the Hi Scores. I also got all the bonuses up to there, so...yeah.

eskimo adventure
Im stuck on that one too!
Although here are some hints that may help you out a little:
Always click on the centre of the hooks,I know its a touch hard not to panic as soon as the first hook lifts you up, clicking everywhere to prevent falling into the spikes.
And also when you do fall, try moving to the left or the right with your arrow keys to stop yourself falling on the spikes. Lastly, dont give up! keep trying, and with practice and determination you will beat the level!
Best Of luck,
SahBeh

FIRST BOSS SPOILER!

This game is really nice, as all other nitrome games. The caterpillar boss is quite easy. Use the grappling hooks to jump over him when he comes forward, and shoot him from behind.

Though, i'm stuck on the last level (mount neverest), because i have no idea how to beat that last boss. I can get his eye out, but shooting him, shooting his eye, letting the icicles fall on him/his eye/jumping on his eye has no effect whatsoever. I wouldn't mind a spoiler.

Reply

I beat the caterpillar by shooting it's head, then grappling above it as it charges at you, and repeated it until it dies. I could only get in one hit before I had to jump over it. Also, it speeds up the less body parts it has.

I have to point out that at the logo, the little text at the bottom reads "Nitrome 2006" when it was released in 2007. Anyway, check out "Small Fry", the new game from Nitrome!

Roadripper level 7:

Wait till the spike ball passes then jump on to the first plataform.Wait again and jump to the 2nd one and kill the monster.Jump to the third one and loose a life on the 3rd spike ball(long one). Then jump to the next plataform and jump the other 2.When you on the air aim and shoot to the bigger plataform whit one monster and 3 spike balls.Walk to the left and kill the monster, jump the ground spikes and jump till you get to the top of the plataform on the left.Jump on the blocks that destroy till you get to that boast thing but be carful whit the spike balls(you may get hurt by the first spike ball). When you get to the plataform on the left shoot the 2 boats and get to the stone door.Jump on the elevator that comes and shoot to the gras on the stone plataform then go a little to the right and jump to the elevator then fall on the destroy blocks and shoot the boast to get up to the elevator. Then wait again and jump to the other blocks and get up.When you see the elevator on the right coming jump to the block on the middle on the spike balls and get to the elevator.Avoid the spike balls when going up.When you see the stone dor shoot the boast and try to reach the stone door plataform(if you cant then loose a life on the spike balls and jump to the 3 stone plataforms and get to the stone door.Shoot the boast and get to the snow plataform. Then jump as high as you can and shoot to the snow plataforms to get up and you may loose some life. And remember to stay on the stone plataforms to let some snow balls pass. When you see the 3 boast shoot them and get to the 2 boast and get to the flag.

Hope it helped and if you dont understand some part just tell me.

I have one complaint about Frost Bite. The difficulty curve is quite steep (get it?), and the hard levels come in at Stage 4. Why can't you stand on the hooks?

Anyway, for anyone that's curious, the congratulations screen just says "Congratulations" with some of the monsters' meat being carved (that's what I think it is, anyway, could be a red apple).

Also:
Has anyone been to Thor's Cave? It's near Wetton Mill, Staffordshire. If you liked the game you'd like this.

Wanna know the height of it?

Are you sure?

Are you positive?

OK then.

360ft.

How do you beat the monster on level 10? Please help. I've been trying everything I can think of... jumping on it, shooting it...etc. Thank you!

I beat it! This is the best game ever!

A fun game, but it would be nice if the grappling gun had a slightly longer range. I think the next game Nitrome makes should be "Frost Bite 2".

For the final monster on level 10:
You need to shoot out the eye, then jump on it.
You have to do that a few times. Good luck ;)

*breathes in*

I completed the whole thing ages ago. I loved it. Frost Bite 2 is good, too, except they have no idea that they need to make Level 10 of FB2 more touch-pad friendly. And for the last boss of Frost Bite 1:

Shoot it's eye and stamp on the pupil. Make sure that you have plenty of health though as there is a glitch which hurts your character while walking on the ground. Probably something to do with the icicles. :-)

*lets out breath*

I beat the first boss by shooting it's parts: then, when it was flashing, I quickly ran through it. Then I repeated. Sometimes I lost one energy or so when I ran, but when there are down to 1 parts, usually it's fine.
