Small Fry
When I heard the newest Nitrome game since Sky Wire 2 was called Small Fry, I turned to my own "Small Fry", seven-year-old Roland. Roland, you've played every Nitrome game ever released. What makes this one special?
Roland: Like most games it gets harder and harder as you go. It has cool backgrounds. But this one is special because you get four different characters: Brain, Sporty Guy, Warrior and, last but not least, Skeleton. You have to get them all to the tree house at the end of the level.
Karmen: Each Fry comes equipped with special abilities, such as climbing or smashing, much like the classic Lemmings. Nitrome has used the Lemming concept in the past, with games like Sandman and Scribble. Here, the goal is similar: rescue as many small fries as possible. The little guys will move blindly onwards until they encounter an obstacle, stop to pause on a subterranean stump or reach their final destination.
Roland: But this is different. You can lift them by clicking on them and moving them around! Unless they are in a cave, that is. That also goes for water. In those places, you can't touch them. In the caves, there is a carving that says "no mouse" to remind you.
Karmen: Grabbing the characters allows you some control over their abilities. However, many puzzles are inside caves, so the levels can be quite challenging.
Roland: There are fry-eating piranha plants, thorny vines that can stab you and gigantic bugs. Don't worry, the warrior can punch the bugs. Also the skeleton can survive any disaster that would normally kill a fry.
Karmen: Small Fry has everything I love about Nitrome games: cute scenes with familiar faces, unique twists on classic ideas, and a few difficult levels requiring much planning, practice, and timing. We encountered a few minor bugs while playing, but they didn't detract from the overall experience. I think this is one of those games I'll come back to play again and again. How about you?

This is a very addicting game. The game overall isn't that hard, but there are a few annoying levels later on.
The visual style is great, and the music is a lot livelier than a lot of games before.
The camera control could be better, but I don't have a huge problem with it.
@Mebeme: The Cheese Dreams moon is on the menu just above the 'y' in fry as well as every level. I think it's interesting how Nitrome seems to be starting to link their games together in the same universe.
Overall this is a great game.

For level 10, you have to destroy the plants.
You can't attack them directly..but think about a way to first disable them, and then attack.
One thing I thought could be changed is that it'd be great if there was some kind of interactive minimap, so that instead of having to scroll (sometimes clumsily) through the level, you could just click the minimap to take you to a particular part of the level. This would make it easier when you're dealing with multiple Small Fries at once, as well as making the game more smooth overall.
I'm only having problems with bugs(computer kind, not the enemies).Level 18 wont load and some levels don't show up in level select even though I won them.

here is a walkthrough for the not already guided levels.
Level 6:
Let the fry turn around at the edge. drag over to the other edge and let him drop. Carry him across the water and up to the flower above him. that will open the gate. Take him down and drop him over the plant. That will open the bridge. Then let him walk home.
Level 7:
Pretty much all you have to do is let the war fry go first to the door and let the brain go after. He'll trigger the plant, and they can get home. Make sure the war fry goes first though!
Level 8:
Let the skeleton go across the water and trigger the button. Then let the brain cross and drag him to the flower. Let the skeleton go under water and trigger the door. Then drag the brain across to the house.
Level 9:
Let the war fry fall then catch him. let him walk down and meet the brain. let the brain bounce up and catch him in the light areas. Drag him to the flower. drag him back down. mak the war fry bounce and catch him. turn him around on the ledge. Drag him to the block. Drag him home and get the brain home too.
Level 10:
Let the skeleton walk across and open the door. Then turn the skeleton around and set him walking back. Let a war fry follow him. Let the brain walk and trigger the plant. Let the other two turn around. Let the m all walk to the pillar below. Destroy the plant the same way. Open the gate and destroy the other plant. Go home.
Level 11:
Turn the brain around at the water. Take him over the spikes. Let him turn around at the edge then drag him to the flower. let him fall to the bridge. Let him turn around. Carry him to the next flower. Let him drop and drop again down to the spikes and drag him through the spikes to home.
Level 12:
Basically just let the warriors take everything out. Only thing though: You have to hit the fish thing in the face.
Level 13:
Let the skeleton drop, take him through the maze, activate the bridge, take the war fry through, let him bust the rock, then take the skeleton back through to the home.
Level 14:
Let one guy run and jump and turn around an go back to the stump. Then let him drop and swim and hit the button. Then let the other one go up and over the stump and down then turn him around and let him go up top and jump and hit the button and open up the door that's blocking the other sport fry. He will hit the last button and let them both swim home.
Level 15:
Let the brain activate the bubbles then let the skeleton activate the door, then let the sports fry activate the two buttons. Then let the skeleton float up and down and activate the next two buttons and let the brain walk across and activate the flower and let the skeleton activate the last button and drag them all home.
Level 16:
Drag the war fry over and dodge the fish things and hit the button and float up and hit the bugs and hit the button. then take out the plant and hit the button. Dodge the fish creatures and float up and get the skeleton through and then get the war fry through.
That's all I've got right now. I'll come out with the last few soon.
Not one of their best games, but still thoroughly enjoyable. Oh, Nitrome, how you spoil us!

fun game! good job, nitrome. though nothing especially revolutionary was explored in the gameplay, it was done very well. music fit very well and i liked it. and gotta love those nitrome graphics.
i do have a few gripes, though:
the camera system was a bit clumsy, though i'm not sure how to fix it and still have it be playable. having a minimap screen like Dan posted seems like it might fix my problem with it. or perhaps having it so when you left click on an area that ISN'T a small fry, you could hold and drag the screen.
also, it seemed like the game felt a bit cramped. i would have liked to have a bigger screen area. though i know websites like to have consistent resolutions for their flash games at times, i feel that it would have enhanced the gameplay experience a bit.
but anyways, you know a game is good when these are the only complaints. =) good job, keep it up nitrome!

I know how to get through Level 13, but how in the world do you get the war fry through those spikes? I keep doing it and I always fall or hit the spikes!!! This is so frustrating. Any help?

I almost beat the whole game, but level 25 won't load! and when I quit and go back, all the levels I passed aren't there any more!

I BEAT THE WHOLE ENTIRE GAME!
If you don't believe me, then when you get to level 25, you will see that there are 10 brain small frys, which are the pink ones. It was so hard! Out of all 10, I only managed to get 1 to the finish!

Shelly, you can just leave the skeleton and click the little flag in the right corner to move on if you have any of the other little guys in the house.

I just love this game's music. Heck, I love the music for all the Nitrome games. I wonder if they have a downloadable album for the iTunes music store.

How do you beat 18? I'm stuck...
Interestingly enough I encountered a bug that let me bypass, well, everything in the game. When I click and drag the creatures, I can take them right through walls. So I just take each one through the walls and passed all the obstacles to the finish. Most my finish times were in less than 30 seconds.
Of course, that takes the fun out of it, but I couldn't play normally because my characters could get stuck in walls. I'm using Firefox 3 on the mac. Anyone else encounter this behavior?

How are we supposed to kill those fish things in level 12? I finished the level, but I always feel so bad for the warrior guys for martyring themselves just so the others can get home on time...

To Kill Plant Things:
Help on Level 24...
Use a brainy guy to activate the flower next to the falling rock by the start point. This starts up another bubble blower. Then activate the fans from the two switches closest to the water pool at the right of the maze screen halfway up. DO NOT ACTIVATE ANY MORE SWITCHES!! This gets the bubbles on the right column of the two bubble columns going in the right direction. If you get in a bubble (stand over it when it is forming) from the right column, it will deposit you on the top ledge right below it when it reaches the top of the screen and pops (be sure that you are facing right first. Use an athletic guy for the first one. He will fall on the ledge, jump over it, and activate the bridge switch across the gap he just jumped across. Now take the other guys up the same way in the bubbles to take them home. Be sure they are facing right first.
Sigh... I despise this game. What could have been a nice interesting, though not too novel, puzzle concept has been turned into a "can I keep my mouse steady enough, while I fight the awkward controls" game... and no I can't.
This game kept me hooked from the first moment I played it, and I still think it's a good game. There are some bugs, but I ignore most of them. There is one serious bug, though, at least on my PC:
The levels beyond 20 doesn't appear in the level select menu, even when I've actually unlocked them!

Argh! Stuck on level 12 my men just keep getting killed by the big blob on legs! Help?
If anyone was unaware, you can click the flag icon between the pause and restart buttons to end the level, once you have gotten at least one of the small fries home. So if you have a stray fry you can't seem to save, you can end the level.
Also, to kill the big fat blob guys..

I made it to level 25, but levels 19, 21, 24, and 25 don't show up on the level screen!!!! HELP!!!!
Any level where you leave a Small Fry out of the house and hit the flag to finish the level will not show up in the level select menu.

My theory on why after you've "passed" a level it still shows up as ??? on the level choice screen is that you have to make it "home" with a minimum number of fries. I see three issues with this: 1. it is not disclosed by nitrome in any place that i've found so everyone is asking questions about it, which is just frustrating. 2. The number that have to make it home is unknown, so you just have to keep going back to it. 3. you have to start at the level prior to that level to get back to it.
All in all, quite a fun game with interesting puzzles that were just the right amount of difficulty.
I'm pretty sure some levels are unbeatable without losing at least one Fry along the way, so it probably is a bug of some sort that some levels show up as ??? after completion
Hm... in the help it clearly says "try to get at least one to the safe house", not "try to get an arbitrary but important number of fries to the safe house".
I think it might be a bug.
Btw, did anyone else upon seeing the title thought for a tiny moment that this game might be Futurama-themed?

Don't press level finish or you will not get the next level to appear in level selection.I got to the final level but I quit and now I'm back on level 22.Tip: either kill all other guys before you get to the exit or make sure the last living guy gets to the end.

I won the level 25 and it had the normal quit next level thing and I pressed next level and there was the loading... and it was frozen up so I right clicked and pressed play and there I was on level 25 except it said I was on level 26.The strange thing was there was only 25 level spots in the game.

You can unlock every level except 21. You can't press finish or you won't unlock the level. You can either get them all to the house, or get at least one to the house and let the rest die. They have to all die or win! I hope this clears up the confusion!

That's not a very good reward for finishing the game: a flickering LOADING screen. Oh, and a little cheat for the caterpillar thingies:
Also, did anybody else have a bug in level 25 where it didn't show you the "Got 1 home" notification, and then later when all of the brains had gotten home or gotten killed, it didn't automatically end? The finish flag did its job, and I went back and retried level 25, and it didn't have that problem the second time, it ended automatically. Then of course, it still had the problem with not progressing on to another level or the win screen.
PS. Thank you Jay for fixing the comment submission system, it is much smoother now!

Level 18:
Okay, a couple of things. First a refinement on a bug. If the last fry on a level dies, the level does not auto-end, you have to click the flag. If the last fry on the level gets home, then the level does auto-end. So if you're on a level where most of the fry need to die, you can get an auto-end by working out the timing so that all of the deaths happen before the last fry gets home.

Hey, this is a pretty good game. I've beaten about half of the game, and I found a glitch. I completed Level 13, but it skipped onto 15 (fourteen is still in ???). Anyone else find this?

To complete Level 25:
Right-click on the bottom set of frys. Click Zoom In. Drag the frys through the floor and drop them on the roof of the treehouse. Do the same with the top set of frys. Not the usual way of doing it, but I did it like that.
Can somebody tell me how to turn the little frys to the end? I've been trying for 2 days. Please? And please in a very simple way because i'm an Italian girl.

About Level 25:
Right-click the gameplay when Level 25 is displayed. Press Zoom In. Drag your men through the floor to the end. Do this the bottom set first, then the top set.

How do you complete level 18? I can hit all of the switches except the one that activates the last door to the house, and i know that i have to get sporty guy down there, but he keeps jumping over the openings and i can't just drop him in because it's in a cave. Please help!

how do you destroy the paranahs on level 10???
To defeat the piranha plants, you have to let the skeleton walk into them (he won't die). While the plant is closed, make the warrior attack it. It is now dead. BTW, i beat the game, but at the last level, i press the "finish game" button, and nothing happens.
i completed it i felt it was disappointing. other games really pull me in, i went to get a drink 5 times! whilst playing it. i got bored a few times and fell asleep in lvl 16 but pet control 2 is an idea maybe they should work on that! leave a comment asking for help if you want thorough guidance i would be more than happy to help.
