Gretel and Hansel: Part One
Behind every brave little German boy there's a clever little German girl. Which is a good thing in this slightly twisted point-and-click retelling of the classic fairytale, since Gretel is clearly the brains of the outfit. You'll need to think outside the box to keep the two tots alive, since danger can be found in the most unexpected places. Don't let the lovely watercolour graphics fool you. This one's not for the kiddies.

I had a wonderful time playing this little game. I can see this game as only the tip of the iceberg for the crew that made this. I agree with the review that is simple, but not to a fault in anyway. Like fine chocolate cake, I am overwhelmed by how luscious it is while at the end I am left wanting more. I urge anyone who has not played around with Gretel and Hansel to give it a whirl. It is short and wickedly sweet, tempered by a delicate artistic hand. You too will be yearning for that second slice.
I also love the graphics on this one. I am stuck, though:
I have all of the pebbles but one, the one in the crow's nest. I have used all of the items but the clock -- and Hansel's drawings. I can't figure out what to do next. Any help?
Also,
I missed out on the bunny death by scaring the bunny off with the slingshot. But I did manage to get killed by the spider, the bees and the crow.
@aktoaster:
Where does the bird sit? What could you do to get it away? The paintings might be useful and if you are that far already, well, it only needs a spark... does something sparkle in that view of the room?
As for myself, I'm stuck at the last one that gets carried away by that nice little squirrel. :/ Also I only have 2/3 acorns.
Ok, I managed to finish, but:
I did not end up getting the pebble (or coin) from under the crow. I somehow ended up with 10 after hitting myself with my own slingshot pebble by bouncing it off the spider web. I never used Hansel's drawings, either. Though I did get another hand for the clock, and fiddled with it. Not sure if that ended the game or not.
Also, re: deaths:
I missed rabbit, fire, cart Gretel, Cart Father and Axe. I assume the fire death had to do with Hansel's drawings and the fireplace. Missed the card deaths due to my general lack of coordination. Not sure where the axe was, though.
Loved it, would love to see more -- something longer!
Nevermind! Looked at the walkthrough.
And for the clock;
It's unnecessary. But...
to find one hand you need to shoot that butterfly at the well. I really don't know for the other hand, I just randomly found it on the cottage floor. xD
Lots of random clicking on the clock later, it popped open at 4:30? At least for me it did.
Definitely the most distributing thing in the game for me. O_o
Can't wait to see what comes next! :D
while i was being stuck, i discovered something quite disturbing
you can kill hansel o_O
by repeatedly shooting at him... he starts looking like a zombie.... and the face gretel makes when he dies is priceless
too bad you "die" that way. technically shouldn't you win because you've solved the original problem? ^_~

It's really saddening how pervasive and acceptable a certain kind of sexist bigotry has become. If this were a game about an adventuresome boy with a stupid, useless sister, there'd be all kinds of foofooraw about patriarchy and negative stereotypes. But when it's the boy who's stupid and useless, it's just a fun game.
You can't watch an hour of television without seeing a "loveably" inept and immature male with a hyper-competent female companion (wife or sister) in either the show or the commercials- probably multiple examples. The reverse is close to non-existent.
I won't play this game or any others which perpetuate this meme.
Hi Gabriel. I hadn't actually considered it from that perspective before. I doubt the creators intended this to be offensive, and it doesn't seem like it's been taken as such by a lot of players. But the point you raise is an interesting one, and while I feel Gretel and Hansel is still a fine and enjoyable game, you're well within your rights not to play it if you feel it supports a stereotype you're not comfortable with. There are a lot of stereotypes out there in the media, and what seems harmless to someone else is cause for concern to another.
Thanks for voicing your opinion and I hope we feature other games you can enjoy in the future. :) (And, of course, feel free to submit any you think should be featured using the form!)
@Gabriel, I'm sorry. But, that is the most ridiculous sentiment I have ever heard. You will really not play this game because Hansel is a blubbering oaf who eats everything? It's funny, it's different. In all of the traditional stories Gretel is meek, and useless. How's that for a stereotype? Please, save your mumbo jumbo. If you couldn't figure out how to get out of the first room, just admit it. This game is a masterpiece and the beginning of a revolution.
This is a very beautiful game, but please consider that it is very useful to use words properly when you write a walkthrough. For example, a stump is not a stomp, and searching acorns behind a small or a large stomp makes absolutely no sense to people like me who have learnt English language at school and even university. First, there is not that much people who speak English through the world, and then, if you start writing slang or whatever, only a couple of Londoners will understand you.
If once, mind you, the sun never sat over the British empire, there is no reason for people of the rest of the world, to sunburn their tongue's skin at their historic and ancient ennemy's sun. If again we make the effort to learn a bit of this language, please make an effort, try to write correctly, like I try myself.
As a matter of fact, after looking in a dictionnary in order to verify if I wasn't missing a meaning of the word "stomp", which is a kind of step, I read the walkthrough and found the word "stump", which is the lower part of a tree after it's been cut down. This is to say, nothing in common.
Something else : most of the time, the captcha is considered like not matching, though you type it correctly. May be it's because of Firefox ?
Whatever, thank you for this very good game !
Oh my. You do NOT want to see what happens when you manage to open the door in your room. You don't.
What, you do? Fine then. Here comes the guide to opening the door from Gretel's view.
Alright, mum and dad want us dead? Well, mum? Oh great, i'll have to go through a whole fricking ceremony again to get me and mr. stupid out of this affair. RAGE! Let's cool it on that clock over there. Where's that slingshot... aha! Bang, bang bang! Gotcha!... might as well pick it up. Now, i need some idea to get out of here... any ideas, Hansel? Hansel? Helloooooo?...
ALRIGHT, STUPID! EAT THESE FLIES! BANGBANGBANGBANGBANGBANG!
Ooooops.....oh wait, now he's alive again. And.... what's that? A clock hand? Hey, yeah, there aren't any hands on the clock. Let's wrench it on, and voila! Now where do i find that small hand? Gotta get this rocking horse outta the way... mr. stupid is good for something still.
Okay, let's go see. Maybe... hey, wait a moment! That butterfly is holding something! Chase!
Alright, you got to the well, but you ain't getting no further! *bam* Ooh... the small hand! Fix it on... i'll bring this back.
Mr. stupid, i got a toy for you. Wait, what're you doing? Why would you in earth put the large hand at 6? What're you doing with the small one? One...two...three...*DING* Hey, a key! Thanks, mr. stupid! Maybe i can open the door with this... let's see what i can find. Clink-clunk...
*CRASH*
What was that?
*CRASH*
An axe? A hole?
*CRASH*
Oh great, not her, please not her...
*CRAAAAAAAAAAAASH!*
Oops... erm, hello, mummy... had any fun in the bedroom? Erm... what's that axe for? Ooh, oh no, oh no, oh NAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARGH!
I couldn't get the 'axe' ending, I'm not sure if there's a bug. I tried a few times, but
every time I knocked down the clock and picked it up, there was no hand. I know it was there once, when I didn't know what to do with it, but I haven't been able to get the second-hand since. no trouble getting the hour-hand from the butterfly.
Is it a bug or am I forgetting something?
If you don't know how to get the stone under the bird,
you must go back inside and you see the chimney, right? Take Hansel's drawings and go up close to the chimney. It will have the thought bubble of a fire. Drag the drawings into the chimney and then slingshot the shiny spot on the pole thingy. It will create sparks to light the fire.
I loved that this game was a take on a classic tale, the appropriate pleasant music, the beautiful watercolor renderings, and that it twists you into almost beginning to enjoy causing and watching your characters' imaginative deaths. Well, that's it for the good part. Kudos to the author on an excellent concept, but the execution leaves much to be desired. In general, I found this game extremely ponderous and irritating to play.
Without use of the walkthrough, figuring out many parts of the game was impossible for me. It is not logical; i.e., even when you supposedly know exactly what to do, you often must be in some unknown exact position to complete something - there is no point to such hurdles. To me, that's unnecessary and boring rather than vaguely fun or interesting to figure out. In general, rather than pixel hunting the correct location to engage in an activity / to use an item, move around an area until you see a thought bubble appear which indicates that you're in the right spot to do something and the bubble will give you a hint as to what item to use (except I think for the stick). Then drag the item over the girl to use rather than directly to the point where you want it to be used. But regardless of the hints in the thought bubbles, if you're in the immediate area surrounding an item, I think you should be able to use the inventory item rather than be forced to engage in boring hunting for one specific spot for an inventory item to become functional. I would also have the inventory items available directly from the game page at the side or top so an item could be tried more quickly (rather than open, click, drag to girl, it whips back, close, move girl a bit or similar, open, etc.), and perhaps then rather than hints in thought bubbles, you could make an item throb when the girl was in the appropriate area.
For those desperate to finish this (these are not hints, but detailed instructions, so don't read if you want to figure the topic out on your own):
FLOWERS ON WELL / BUCKET spoiler:
It seemed impossible to get all the flowers to turn from black to white until I put the girl to the right of the well and hit each of the flowers located at the far left of the well - this will also turn those in the same line of fire (closer to the girl) white. Once all flowers are white at the same time, the vines will fall from the well, so you can then take your time moving the girl to the rear of the well and dragging the bucket to her - she will take it and use it to retrieve the stone.
Elusive ACORN behind stump at well spoiler:
As an earlier poster noted, there certainly does seem to be nothing behind the large stump near the well. To get the acorn, rather than walking close behind the stump as would be the logical assumption, walk behind the stump further away from its base - so only the girl's head is hidden by the stump.
Knock BEEHIVE down spoiler:
Multiple attempts to use the stick to poke the hive to get it to fall failed; it was incredibly irritating. A thought bubble appears when the girl is directly under the hive, but that wasn't helpful. Locate the girl to the right of the hive at the lower intersection of the two tree roots; assuming those roots look like a "V" on its side with the pointy end to the left, she should be just under the lower leg of the "V" where it meets the upper leg. Only then will she take the darn branch and poke the hive.
Get STONE in BEEHIVE spoiler:
It's only interesting getting killed by the bees once - trying to figure out where to stand and how close to get to use the mushroom without getting killed over and over again was boring. Stand in the center of the first (lowest) of the three steps leading to the front door until you see a thought bubble, then select the mushroom, and kill the bees. It was a very imaginative method of killing the bees!
Get STONE in house wall spoiler:
I hit the wood down to see the stone behind it in the wall, only to be flummoxed as to how to get the darn stone DOWN so the girl could pick it up. Walkthroughs indicate the stone was supposed to drop down immediately, but that didn't happen at least in my play. The stick was useless. Solution after much mind-numbing use of the slingshot: shooting the dark area of the hole to the direct right of the stone will result in it falling down.
Catch SQUIRREL spoiler:
I tried shooting the darn squirrel from many vantage points to make it come down to get the acorns placed under the cage to no avail; it just ran away. If I read instructions advising merely to "shoot the squirrel to make it come down to the acorns" one more time I thought I would burst into tears of frustration... Then I found the walkthough below, to which I've added a bit:
1. Go to red button on house, click button or thought bubble that appears.
2. Open inventory, drag crank to red button, click crank to make cage go up again. (Wow, isn't it illogical that if the cage is already up we have to make it go down and up again before being able to continue?)
3. If you didn't put acorns in the circle under the cage already, do so. (Since I already put acorns under the cage earlier, I tried to shoot the squirrel again right after cranking the cage back up, but the squirrel just disappeared again for a while. The key if you already placed the acorns under the cage is to start walking toward the circle again - after you've lowered and raised the cage for no reason - as if you were going to put the acorns down in the circle a second time - the squirrel will appear when you're just to the left of the front corner of the house, and if you hit it then it will drop to the acorns.)
4. Go back to the red button. After you see the thought bubble again, click the red button with your mouse to lower the cage, and the caught squirrel drops the stone. I actually wasn't able to click the button, I had to step back and use the slingshot, go figure!
Get stone behind SPIDER spoiler:
Stick doll in honey after you kill the bees as instructed by the thought bubble, go to right of black circle under spider until see thought bubble, give doll to spider, retrieve stone behind spider.
After getting the 10th stone I looked forward to setting the clock and returning to the house to ‘enjoy' the Axe Death. But I was immediately taken to the mini-game cart run at the end and couldn't figure out how to return to the rest of the game, so be warned to finish all you want to do before picking up the last stone. The mini-game at the end was very out of place; although I certainly understand the concept it should have had an intro showing the reason for it and instructions. The girl should have been able to kill the evil mom with the slingshot there and while continuing to run - while I hit the dad and the boy multiple times with the slingshot I couldn't get either to trip and fall to be killed by the cart to achieve the Cart Death or Hansel Death either, so I'm sure I missed some other needed element. Note you can let the girl trip and be run over to restart the chase. The last page was dull and a big let down - it should have been more far more celebratory.
Supposedly you can return to play it again in the same session even if you haven't saved the game as long as you haven't closed the page, but by that time I was so exhausted I gave up. What's odd to me is that it's as if the game was designed assuming that walkthroughs will be used to figure out not only what to do but also all the ways to be killed; either that or the icons and descriptions of methods of death that runs only AFTER the credits would have to be viewed and then the game replayed, which doesn't make much sense, particularly where as here some of the methods of death are so obscure. Please add the same death icons and descriptions that appear at the end of the game to the bottom of the active game page so we can keep track of our progress DURING the game. While I'm sure some people can figure this game out without outside hints, I doubt many can.
So much obvious time, effort and creativity went into this it's a real shame that the small amount of additional effort required to have decent instructions, better movement and action (meaning a non-pixel hunting layout as to location to use an object) wasn't applied. For example, it would be nice if it was indicated in any way to return to the house from the well or spider pages by trying to walk off the lower edge of the page.
- Constantly going back and forth between arrows and the mouse was ponderous. For example, walking the character over and over an item to get her to manage to pick it up is not a reflexive option compared with simply clicking the item with the mouse. Also, when trying to get in and out of the house (arrow to move around area until see pointer out, thought bubble with a crawl drawing, then click arrow with mouse button and cut to girl crawling out - argh, why?! When she has exited the house, please delete the continued animated crawling drawing in the bubble, and when she has entered, delete the immediate point out with mouse button - players have the concept by then.) Please improve the game by making it all point and click, as in click to where you want the character to move, and click to pick up an item.
- Movements are too slow. The girl's awkward movements, the cut scenes to and from pages, the cut scene of the death head and subsequent reset to continue playing, and certainly the slingshot use and re-use are all far too slow. Also, regarding the rabbit:
I can't imagine why we'd have to watch the girl kiss the rabbit for 40 or so seconds before another death - what's the possible point of that delay?
- Movements are too limited by the landscape. Limiting her access to the house to using the stairs is unnecessary. For example, after she shoots the stick if she's adjacent to the house, she has to go up and down the stairs to retrieve it from the far lower left corner into her inventory - why not allow her to just walk to it directly? Why can't she jump using the spacebar during the entire game rather than only in the cart game at the end?
I look forward to seeing a second version of this game after it's been tightened up - despite the comments above, it has much to recommend it.
Thank you again for this site, Jay, it's the best on the web in my opinion and just keeps getting better and better with time! What a great service you provide, particularly to those of us who loathe downloading games and look specifically for flash games! :)
To get the elusive acorn behind the big stomp in the well area, position Gretel so her hands are horizontally even with the top edge
of the stomp. Walk back or forth to get her to get the acorn. If she doesn't get it on your first try move her up or down by just one or two clicks, it IS there, keep trying and she will get it....... R2
To get the stone inside the beehive:
Knock the hive down with the branch from above house that you knocked down with the slingshot. Feed Gretel the poison mushroom from the spiders den. She will get very ill. Then she will turn green and belch out a huge cloud of deadly phosgene gas.
This will kill all of the bees.
@Ann Quark
You do realize how many grammatical errors there were in your own comment, right? Where exactly did you go to college? I'd like a word with your English teacher. Though it would probably be best if I spoke to them in person. After seeing the way they taught you, I'm not sure they'd understand a word I type!
I was able to get 10 rocks without having to deal with the spider. Then I couldn't figure out the running thing so I clicked the fast forward and the game was over. There is a flash after you click play of a continue feature but it goes away. I wish you could continue and keep trying. Especially since this game has medal for deaths.
