Oh god, it was hard. And it makes my head spin. I did look up the hints because, well, I had no idea what to do.
I dont know if the 3D cube is best solution or the mouse control is all good. I felt it was hard to control sometimes.
Plus if you were yourself inside a room, you couldnt see it as a cube. It would make more sense, if someone else would be trapped inside the cube and you would need to help him escape by opening the door from outside.
I did it without any hints. =)
While I agree that sometimes it was hard to control, I believe the control added to the challenge of the tasks—especially for purple. It is true that it was a bit disorienting at times, yet I believe the game would have been too easy if the cube and puzzles were stationary.
And while the game might have worked from the perspective of being outside the cube, I felt the experience of being inside the cube to be quite immersive. In fact, once I discovered the game and started playing, I could not put it down until I solved it.
It's not very often that a game sucks me in and doesn't let go until I've finished it, like this one did.
I find the game addictive too, but its very strange game since your main challenge is "what am I suppose to do?" and once you figure out what to do then the actual "making it happen" is quite easy. Because of that I dont think it has much replay value, unless you somehow manage to forget the "what am I suppose to do" part :)
I like very much the visuals and the overall look and how some puzzles use the 3D cube. Also its one of very few Flash games, that have working 3D environment which itself is quite impressive. Once I turned the quality to low, it worked very fast.
Tony - I agree there is not much replay value with a game designed like this, yet it is very appealing to that part of me that loves to figure things out. Once I figure it out, there's not much left to do but recommend the game to others. =)
Kieran - there was a clue in each puzzle you solved before the one with the orbiting balls. You may have to go back through the game again to observe the solution to the last one.
Andy - Green presented a bit of a challenge for me as well. Although I am still not quite sure what the pattern was that eventually solved it for me, what I did do was look for places that were not green in the same shape as the illuminated symbol over them. Also, there might be some correlation between opposite sides of the room, but I can offer no proof. Sorry, but that's the best I can offer. Keep trying, eventually you will get it. =)
Bob - I find it quite interesting that you were able to solve purple and orange without solving red. Red is very simple. It is based on a very well known and familiar object, frequently found in games. White is based on clues given within each of the puzzles that came before it.
plzzz someone..im in the white room, andi tried all the possible ways for the circles. green is the only big one, red blue and yellow are medium and orange and pink are the small ones, ive tried to put all colors one each..like GRP GRO GBP GBO GYP GYO, ive tried to put one on all 6, then one on each separatly, and it still doesnt go, plzz if anyone knows what to do for the white room plz post it
cole - not 100% sure, but you have to make the whole room green, do this by clicking the little shapes. every time that you click a shape, it maps that shape on the same place of every wall. and if two of your shapes overlap, or are on the same wall, then the shape that ou had put down before dissapears. :)
plz correct me if im wrong or missed something.
Here's how I did the green room.
Two rules:
- each side has to have ONE bright green shape
- the green shapes cannot overlap eachother.
first you click on the symbol that makes the green shapes. A bright green shape appears. Then you look at the other sides. Find a symbol that wil fit with the fist green shape. So that your green shape will not overlap the other green shape. All the symbols for the shapes are placed differently on each seperate wall. So search the walls for the symbol that will not overlap. Continue this until all the walls are green.
Hope this helps.
i know this is pitiful but i used hints for the dark room. but even though i read the hints, i really didnt quite understand but i kind of understood after a few seconds.
but right now i'm stuck on the white room. all i have written down are these patterns of the orbiting dark circles from the other colored rooms. and i tried that but nothing happened so can someone please assist me?
hey peter!...in the red room, you should see that theres only 2 walls that lets you push buttons right? well thats the challenge...but you have to look around the other 4 walls and hover your cursor over them.
the "invisible" circles that appear after you hover them start to give this "pattern". the pattern in this room is like a roll of dice. so that means you have to find out what are the dice patterns on each of the 4 empty walls. once you found them, you have to COMPLETE the dice by adding in the dots on the 2 walls that have buttons on them. i hope this helps peter!
The best approach is to write down on a sheet of paper 6 squares that represent each of the 4 sides, the ceiling, and the floor of the room. Then mark in those squares the solution to the last puzzle as obtained from each of the 6 colors. It makes the solution to white quite trivial. I hope that helps. =)
Okay, I need huge help w/ the freaking red room. The green room I don't have yet but I think it's just that I need more patients. I know what to do there. I'm going to give a big hint on the white room and I'm not even there yet. Sorry If this is too big of a hint Jay!! Okay. look in each room of optical illusion for a dot that is roaming around. That is all. Hmmm, that sounds kind of misleading, but O WELL. Anyway, anyone who wants to offer another hint on the red room, PLEASE DO.
Thank you much
White hint: In each of the colors that you complete, at the very end with the swirling pattern, look closely at every wall. On one of the walls will be a symbol like you will see with White. What that symbol is telling you is the wall on which to place an orbiting sphere of the color you just completed. It even shows you which ring to place it on.
Tips! MAKE A CUBE OUT OF PAPER TO DOCUMENT!
Red - Think gambling.
Blue - Start on the middle of the floor. (takes forever)
Yellow - Try double-clicking!
Purple - Document everything
Orange - Document everything
Green - Simple guess and check. Doesn't help to document.
White - Look at the swirly pattern in each of the finished levels. Not every ring on every wall will have a color
I"m a bit stuck on green..but hoping to hack my way through with no hints.
Seems folks are stuck on the same thing I was stuck on at first. The swirly bits (like the one at the end of the blue maze) aren't another puzzle really. That just means you finished a room. Click the triangle button in one of the corners and go back to the main room.
(Dummy-Me spent about 30 minutes trying to click my way out of the swirly-place before I figured out I was SUPPOSED to end up back in the Dark Room
check out this solution
I've written a walkthrough. Don't use it unless you're completely and utterly stuck because it doesn't give hints, just cheats. Here's the link.
Mail me or comment on my walkthrough if you find mistakes.
I finished red, yellow, green, orange, and purple with no problem. However the blue room is killing me.
I was able to go from the middle of the floor to the middle of the ceiling (all different ways, I even found the shortest path). BUT, NOTHING HAPPENED!
Anyone could give me a hint on how to solve blue room? Do I have to go thru all the squares (and without going to the same square twice?) HELP!!
Thanks,
Odyssey
This game rocks! Okay, I admit I used some help and spent at least two hours on the orange room before reading someone's walkthrough. People, don't be lazy, draw it if you're stuck! Anyways, here's as many hints I can give you without actually giving a walkthrough. (Or, maybe it already is one.)
Red room:
Get a dice. Hover your mouse over each side that does not have buttons two see the number of spinning circles. For the two walls that have buttons, fill in the correct areas on the dice. (If its a six, for example, click all buttons, if its a four, click the four corners, etc.)
Yellow room:
Double click and try to light all walls yellow. Tricky, but pay attention to the corners of ceiling and floor. That's all the advice I have.
Blue room:
Start in the middle of the floor and make your way through the maze, touching each of the walls, and the destination is the middle of the ceiling.
Orange room:
DRAW A DIAGRAM. Show how walls correspond to the triangle bull's eye. It's a matching game here, but it takes forever. Why? Because every time you screw up, you start over. =(
Green room:
Each shape clicked will be mapped out on that wall in bright green and on all the other walls in a duller green. The object: make the whole room green! You can't overlap shapes or have two bright green squares on the same wall. This is sort of fun, if you ask me.
Pink/Purple room:
Again, DRAW A DIAGRAM and make life easier for yourself. The object is to move your mouse over all of the satellites without touching the spiders. Touch one, and start over. There are twelve of each.
White room:
After you complete each room, a spinning pattern will appear. Search for the hidden clue on one of the walls, which will tell you which orbit, color, and wall to place the orbits in the white room. (Sorry if that sounds confusing.)
Wonderful game, jay! Thanks!
the red room is the easiest for some... hardest for others. All of the rooms could be solved just as easily if you are from an alien planet... except this one. I think it isn't as good as the others because of this.
DO IT WITHOUT HINTS! It is much better this way.
I am #5000 on the Hall of Fame. Yay!
EVERYONE READ THIS!!!!!
jay your wicked cool...this game is awesome...
people!! first, stop before you comment just read through a couple comments and you will see the question your about to post about a million times.
second dont be a wimp and use a walkthrough just spend a little time on each puzzle.
and third enjoy this game cuz its so amzingly awesome
-peace out, J.J.
Here is some help for the red room:
It's like a huge dice.
There are two walls that you can click on, but the other four you must rollover the dots with your mouse. When rolled over, the dots on each side will reveal themselves. Not all dots will appear, since it's a dice.
These are UBER SPOILERS!! Not hints- instructions.
Count the number of dots on the sides opposite those with clickable dots. Each opposite pair of sides adds up to seven, on any given dice that is not fake/cheating dice. So you only need to count the spots on the sides opposite the clickable sides.
I've solved every puzzle but orange. Can anyone give me some tips? I know that:
-You have to illuminate all the lights/designs
-They come in pairs
-You have to illuminate the pairs. Once you light one design, you have to illuminate its matching partner before you can illuminate another pattern.
-Is there a specific order to the pairs (ie: You have to light pair B after pair A and before pair C)?
-Is there a good method to solve this? What I'm doing now is sketching designs on a large cube I have covered with paper, and matching them up. It's taking forever. Is there a better way to do it?
Thanks for the help! C^:
The Dark Room Walkthrough
DISCLAIMER: What you are about to read are the cheats to the game "The Dark Room" if you do not want me to spoil the game for you, do not continue reading this.
RED
It's a big die (singular of dice). If you run your mouse over the blank walls, the dots will light up. The number of dots on opposite walls adds up to 7. Of the two walls that you need to click on, the left one needs 4 dots (the four corners), and the right one needs 5 dots (the four corners plus the center).
YELLOW
You need to light up every square. An easy way to do this is to first click on each circle on the ceiling once, then click on each circle on the floor once. At this point, all of the squares on the side walls will be lit up. For each remaining square that is not lit up yet, click on it twice (not a double-click, that's too fast).
BLUE
It's a maze, starting from the center tile on the floor, and ending at the center tile on the ceiling. Draw it on a piece of paper. You'll need to pass over each wall on your way to the end. pretty simple. DON't hit the walls, only go through the tiles that have OPENINGS in them. OPENINGS ONLY where there is a path LIKE A REAL MAZE. Took me 3 minutes. Real simple.
ORANGE
It's a matching game. You'll need to match all 6 pairs without messing up to pass. Make a drawing. It helps.
1st pair - where the bulls eye is in top right - the one on the right AND turn 90 degrees to left and it's the one on the bottom
2nd pair - where the bulls eye is on top right - it's the on on the bottom AND on the ceiling it's the one directly above it
3rd pair - where the bullseye is on top left - it's the one on the bottom AND turn 90 degrees to right and its the one on the top
4th pair - at the bottom where it is directly lined up to the bullseye AND on the ceiling its the second one
5th pair - on the bottom it's the last one AND where the bullseye is at top left turn 90 degrees right and pick the bottom one
6th pair - DUH! the remaining two
PURPLE
You need to move your mouse over all of the satellites without moving it over any of the spiders. Again, a drawing really helps. There are 12 satellites (and 12 spiders).
THE SPIDER LOCATIONS:
-
the bullseye is on top right - 2 Spiders on bottom
-
on the floor - 2 spiders are diagonal from each other but they are not lined up to the bullseye
-
the bullseye is on top left - 3 spiders, the only sattelite is on the bottom left
-
celing - 2 spiders diagonal from each other, there the ones not lined up with the bulls eye
-
90 degrees left from when bullseye on top right - 2 spiders both of them on the right side (top and bottom)
-
90 degrees right when bullseye on top left - 1 spider its on the top right corner
GREEN
You need to light up the entire cube by clicking on the trapezoids. First, orient your view such that you're looking at the side wall where the bulls-eye is in the top right corner. On that wall, click on the trapezoid in the center. Rotate 90 degrees to the left. On this wall, click on the trapezoid in the bottom left corner. Rotate 90 degrees to the left again. On this wall, click on the trapezoid in the top right corner. Rotate 90 degrees to the left again. On this wall, click on the trapezoid in the top left corner. From this point, go to the ceiling and click on the only trapezoid, after that go to the floor and click the last remaining trapezoid. There you go.
WHITE
You may need some paper for this - Go to all the rooms that should be, by now, solved. On one of the walls there is a dot following a line. The size of the dot will be either Small, Medium, or Big. Write that down. Come up with a system that will help you remember which wall it was on. Also, remember the color of the room. Do this for every room. Go to the white room and click on the size of the line the dot was following and a dot will follow. Click it again to change the color. Make sure it's on the right wall! When the room is solved, exit and go through the door.
hmmm... the white room seems not to work for me. I think i've got everything down right and i've checked it twice but it still dosen't seem to work... any ideas?
[Edit: I would suggest being just a wee bit more descriptive with what you're having trouble with, as you are likely to get very little response to your vague call for help. -Jay]
how annoying...
i hate this game im so mad its impossible.......
[Edit: It's not impossible. But I do understand how you might get frustrated while playing it. Why don't you look through the comments here, as most of the rooms have been discussed with hints, tips, spoilers and perhaps even a walkthrough. -Jay]
A walkthrough (well , kinda)
Blue Room
You start from the bottom floor middle square to the top middle square (Note: it's like a maze, each square has a path leading to another square, keep going until you get it and press the blue button, if not, start again)
Yellow Room
Easy, light up all squares with the buttons (I did this first and it was a snap..)
Red Room
Either get some dice for an example, or try to think like one. Try to move your mouse around the non-button walls, red circles will come out, draw these on a paper. There should only be 6 walls with 1-6 circles on each (Other than the buttoned one)..Ex.The non-button walls are 4,5,3,6. Now try to put the number 1 or 2 on the buttoned walls..Try to find a dice..thats all i can say for this room.
Purple Room
Ahhh, this is easy but annoying room. The room may look like a room of nothing ...BUT!! If you move your mouse over a wall, there should be Satellites and Spiders popping out.
Satellites : get these, if you get 12 or 13 of them, you will compete the room.
Spiders : DONT get these, if you get 1 of these, all the Satellites around the room will DISAPPEAR (Sadly)..
Green Room
Trust me, I dont know how to explain this room...Check the waklthroughs in the comments or the one in the walkthrough section of this page
Orange Room
Sadly, i cant explain this either, the comments above said how the things correspond to the wall (Wtf??)
White Room
This one is hard too, first, go to the red room, on each of the 6 walls, you can see a black circle following a line. Write on a paper on which wall the circle and how big the circle is and what color the room is (As in .. What wall the circle is on, what color the room is and how big the circle is.).
Thats done....I guess
Ha! Beat it. Thx to Tim. I didn't see his spoiler when I wrote my previous comment. That was fun! I don't care that I needed help. Here's the spoil that helped me solve it.
RED - It's a big die (singular of dice). If you run your mouse over the blank walls, the dots will light up. The number of dots on opposite walls adds up to 7. Or you can do it the hard way and just guess till you get it right.

i don't know if it just me, but i really cant work out the blue room. ive looked at the walktrhough you guys have given, but, and this is why i feel stupid, they dont make sense. Opening paths? All the tiles have open paths! its really confusing... but, like i said, thats probably me.
i mean, i can get to the end, using the paths, but it seems im not doing right because it wont go all swirly like it does for the other rooms.
any help will be great...
ta
This game is very fascinating! I really enjoyed it. ^^
I used paper to map out many of the rooms (all except yellow and white), so if you get stuck, that may be helpful.
That being said, I did use the hints for green (just to get an idea, solved using paper cutouts), red (didn't expect it to be so straightforward) and white (didn't stare at the swirly patterns).
So yeah, good luck to anyone looking for help here. =3
Anyone have any idea what happened to the author? The website has long since disappeared; it would be nice to see this game back up on the Web (although I have a copy of the .swf file tucked safely away)
[Edit: Unfortunately, it seems Jonathan May fell off the face of the Earth without a trace a few years ago. I used to communicate with him frequently, but then my emails went unreturned, and then his domains all expired. I fear the worst has happened. He was a brilliant guy, very nice, too. All his games continue to live on here at JIG for posterity. -Jay]
You know what's really amazing? I solved the white room without solving the orange room. I can't get the orange room properly documented, but the others were OK. White was so easy once you knew what to do. "Hints from other levels," as what many have said, do not mean what you might think they mean.
Ohhhh [minor spoiler below]
I was confused as to what everyone was saying with these coloured rooms, and from the hints it seemed that the "progress" I had made led me to the White Room.
To get in to each room...
Use the three buttons to make its colour combination on the corner swirl, then click the swirl.
Yay.
