PsychotronicWarfare 1917Warfare 1917 is a rather excellent World War I strategy title from Con Artist at Armor Games that we overlooked a couple of months ago. Although I suspect that this game's popularity is mostly due to the thrill of watching little army men get tossed around by mortar shells, the author is respectful of his source material, providing a well-balanced and historically rooted collection of ground units and fire support options. The gung-ho cries of your troops make it hard to watch them fall in battle, and if you waste too many lives, you run the risk of losing the battle to low morale.

You can choose to play a full campaign as either the British or the Germans. Win each skirmish by reaching the opposite side of the battlefield with your troops, or alternately by reducing the enemy morale to the point of surrender. What makes Warfare 1917 interesting is the use of trenches as strategic choke points. Since your operating space is essentially a one-dimensional horizontal line, you must be conscious of each of your units' strength and firing range, both in and out of the dirt.

A system of experience points and a wide range of upgrades make the campaign worth replaying, and if you ever just want a quick battle, there is a customizable one-shot skirmish mode. Early versions of Warfare 1917 had some balance issues, especially once the virtually invincible tanks entered the fray, but version 1.2 has things hammered out pretty well. It's a real gem of a wargame that works on more levels than just pew pew pew KABOOM. Though certainly it provides that as well.

i played this not long ago, and found it too linear. Much of the gameplay is too oriented on luck, so instead of being fun, the game teaches a lesson:

I ended up clicking everything when it was ready, just sending out what I hoped would work whenever I could. I won all the battles, but not very efficiently. So, I think I learned how WWI was actually waged: sending tons of men to their death until victory is secure.

Good game if not too short. I felt like it could have used a handful more level before the end scene.

I haven't played the newer version, but from what I recall, tank levels were pretty exciting, and there was a risk of losing them if you didn't adequately protect them. My main issue with the game before was that minefields were pretty fierce, and strikes that shouldn't have been effective on trenches wipe out my entire forces while not doing a thing whenever I used them at the opposing team. Did they fix that?

...confusing...

On the last (?) level with a ton of trenches and the anti-tank ability, I get to the last trench with the enemy down to nothing, and then suddenly lose due to low morale.

OK, it was the second to last level, and I had more success not rushing as hard and ended up winning by morale instead of land.

Great game, well set out. I think it would have been a little better with a more obvious rock-paper-scissors dynamic, and if the tanks werent so tough without mortars but easy to pick up and put down again.

The secret to victory on later levels:

Use the gas bomb at the edge of the screen to kill off his reinforcements. Then be ready to rush when the gas clears.

arrgh, I'm stuck on German lvl 5 (I think). It's the one with two trenches on your end. They have too much firepower!

No wonder the German campaign is marked as hard.

I was on the German side, and to beat the last level:

I used only tanks at the beginning, and firepower as soon as it recharged. Like the anti-tank on tanks and smoke bomb at the edge of their side. At the last moment, I summoned the first unit to take over their land but it turned out I depleted all their morale anyway.

I enjoyed this game. I thought the various buttons you use during the game could've used a rollover explaining what they do. Had to figure out what a locked trench was for and that if you call up one team you have to wait even longer to call up the better teams. Graphics were good though I would've liked a bigger screen cause men kinda dissapeared when they crouched down. Also would've liked to know before I saw it that tanks can roll over trenchs and that my men were not equipped with gas masks.

Walkthrough:

Upgrade all soldier/tank skills. Ignore all right-side upgrades. Send tank first and protect it with anti-tank. Gas their first trench.
Send one (that's enough, otherwise a direct artillery hit into trench will cost you two squads) machine gunner to protect your forward trench. Send next tank. Wait until enemy morale is gone.

Before you get tanks, upgrade stormtroops and gunners. First send one gunner an then collect 2-3 groups of stormtroops to rush after defending the trench.
Should get you throught all levels with minot to none casualties.

Well.....what point would there be to have a tank that can't progress?....besides being an enormous thorn in your side as you tried to make any attempt to advance. And that'd just be plain tough to beat.

Anyway, a lot of that is learned through experience, but I can see how a few tips could have gone a long way towards streamlining the learning process.

I absolutely love this game, and I find it to be neither too hard nor luck based, or at least no more luck based than one might expect on a battlefield with land mines and artillery. This game is as brutal and as faithful to the source material as the flash format and the average home computer will currently allow a game based on the Western Front of WWI to be. More than anything, it requires patience and learning when to entrench and when to advance.

I'm also continually impressed by the amount of subtlety in the details of the game. In other hands this might have been an enjoyable enough diversion, albeit a mediocre one, but Con Artist has made this game live and breathe. Well done.

I too enjoyed the compounding variables and randomness of the game. Lots of subtle lessons to be learnt.
Though it was too short by a long shot. It would have been nice to add another campaign or two. And there were many upgrades that weren't realistically accessible.

This was a great game. I don't know if anybody read the headlines on the 'British/Germans Win!' newspaper when you beat the final level. There is a little bit of political commentary there. The headlines are about 'shell-shocked' veterans not receiving care, the war driving up prices, and the public not being sure if the decision to go to war was justified. hmm...

Quite a fun game but with a couple of issues; my soldiers occasionally get stuck in places and in one case simply ran over the enemy trench, which made the level pretty easy but cost me a bunch of experience points.

Also I found snipers and machine gunners of limited use later on; as the Allies you don't have any trenches to defend and by the time you've kicked the Germans out of theirs you've basically won.

I really enjoyed this game a few months ago when I first played it.

However... it's really short. It doesnt replay well (once you figure out how to beat it, it's over).

judicious use of gas at the right times is awesome. If you can hit the enemy without loosing any of your troops, then it does massive damage to his troops and his moral. Dropping it way behind his lines will keep him from reinforcing his position. Just don't mess up and drop it on your own folks (or where your guys are going) because they don't like that one bit.

Love the artwork, the concept, the realism... I hope they are working on a follow on, because I would love to play more.

Excellent game with--I hope--a great future ahead of it. I have to say I never found much of a use for some of the units (officers and snipers)or upgrades. I'd like to see more levels and more national armies (e.g. French, Russians) with asymmetric abilities and units (eg the French might have higher firepower, Russians faster reinforcements but weaker units etc) Two-player would be awesome.

No need for detailled walkthrough, this game is easy to beat:

Just build as much assault teams / sturmtruppen as possible, whenever they are ready. Their grenades pretty much suffice against tanks. Research all infantry-related advancements. Use gas and artillery when ready (obviously).

Won the two campaigns in a row, German one is actually easier this way.

imzadi: Why would your units have gas masks if you're able to use gas to kill the opponent?

I really enjoyed this game, although a little short, complicated if you tried to think strategically instead of in numbers.

Great game but there are some problems. You can't control your units and some even move without any orders give, and when they do you can't stop them. Instead you should be able to control your units to halt and go foward and perhaps retreat to a location in the battlefield. It would also help if you could build several type of units at once so that your not waiting.
