New from the snowy peaks of Mt. Nitrome (the same team that crafted In the Dog House, Toxic II, Mutiny, and others) comes Frost Bite 2, a direct follow-up to last year's Frost Bite platforming game. Work your way up the snowy mountain peaks using a grappling hook that can latch onto almost anything. Stomp or harpoon enemies to clear them out of your way and move boxes to reach high spots. A few new tricks can be found up Frost Bite 2's fuzzy parka sleeve, just enough to make it feel like a brand new adventure.
Frost Bite 2 keeps to the frozen path carved by the original game, so most of the visuals and gameplay elements will remain the same. Use the [arrow] or [WASD] keys to move around the screen and the mouse to aim and fire the grappling hook. You can use the hook to grab and swing from most ledges, platforms, and a handful of other objects. It also doubles as a harpoon for spearing dangerous foes and can be used to tug certain items around the stage. I hear it even shines shoes and makes a mean fruit smoothie, but Frost Bite 2 doesn't explore that part of the hook's resume...
Before each level begins a wonderfully succinct goal flashes before your eyes: CLIMB! You wouldn't want to disobey a single word imperative, would you? So, start going up, grappling and swinging from platforms, hopping across small gaps, and avoiding or dispatching enemies that get in your way. Frozen power-ups in the form of ice cream can be collected for bonus points, health and extra lives, and you can grab them either by touching them or sending the hook in their direction. Keep an eye out for letters hovering around, too, as collecting and spelling B-O-N-U-S in each level will earn you a... well... a bonus!
Analysis: It's hard to argue with a game like Frost Bite 2, especially when it follows the already successful Frost Bite. As usual, Nitrome has managed to keep a sequel on the tracks of the original without producing something stale and lifeless. Instead, Frost Bite 2 is just as fun and unique as a sequel should be, with enough extras to re-invent the frost-bitten wheel.
The gameplay limitations of Frost Bite 2, while necessary to make the game challenging (and rewarding), sometimes made me want a power-up that let me go crazy. For example, you can't fire the grappling hook downwards, which makes a lot of sense in terms of design, but I really, really wanted to do it! Plus, the rope's length feels very short, which, again, is required so you can have obstacles to overcome. But every once in a while I wanted to grab a power-up that let me go postal, firing the grappling hook in all directions and stabbing every platform within view. Just sayin'.
But really, Frost Bite 2 is just plain fun, and it certainly accomplishes its goal of being an amusing (and cute) diversion. If Super Mario Bros. met Bionic Commando atop a snowy mountain, this would be the result.
This game totally rocks. i didnt like the first though.
did you know that the snowmen look like magneboy and square meal?!
Swinging blades? Moving spike traps? Complicated switch mechanisms? Someone really doesn't want us to climb these mountains. Maybe they're trying to protect the local wildlife.
I can't wait!
Whee!!!
Wildlife must be jumped on the head!
arghles i cant get past lvl 5. and when i tried posting before there was no capcha
This is like Toxic, in that the original game was very good, but it had a sequel which was REALLY good. And this is the sequel.
The new, more 'robust' game engine gives this less of a jerky feel, and so keeps it up to the smooth standard of recent games. Toxic 2 also had a better movement.
However, the eskimo often moves TOO fast, and so makes jumping a little more unpredictable (especially with the wind blowing).
It reuses most aspects of the original, like the basic lollies, monsters, machinery, the layout of the levels, the lives etc.
It is a great addition to their list, and satisfies both sides: those who loved the old game and want it to be similar; and those who did not like some things about the original and want this sequel to be sufficiently differnet.
There is something in it for everyone :)
this game is great. it is what i have come to expect from nitrome and more there is all you could want in an online video game in here:killing, platforming, unlockables(bonuses),bosses, a difficulty curve, and so on. it even kills all the things you have killed before you died for you. its like dieing only makes you fall to the lat checkpoint/entrance. my only complaints are that you can only have 4 lives, the difficulty is insane towards the end and it is a little slow paced. otherwise great game9/10.
I love the Yoshi-tongued birds, by the way. :-P
i love this new Frost Bite (2)! i also love the addition of a bonus 'level' rather than just a bonus, which if i remember correctly, there was no bonus level in the first Frost Bite; only bonus points. i think it rocks. after this, i'm still a very strong Nitrome fan. :]
I think the game is quite good, and much improved from the original, but I wholeheartedly agree that it could have been much much better again with the addition of powerups. Any powerups. A longer line (perhaps upgradable by points) the ability to grab and swing, rather than grapple upwards, the ability to shoot downwards, even by a few degrees. Anything that made you feel that by the last level you were more impressive than you were at the first level.
A new sequel already? They just came out with Toxic 2! Now they have Frost Bite 2... good job, Nitrome. I got to the sixth level so far. Tomorrow I'm going to try and beat the game.
Repairmanman, if you are having trouble with the boss:
Try jumping on its head. It gets hard once the pegs start moving.
Very good and entertaining game. However, I'm finding the little guy moves extremely slow... contrary to what Dav mentioned in his post -unless he was being ironic, but that doesn't seem to be that case-. Maybe it is just me? (I'm on FF 3.0.5)
Anyway, apart from that, 4/5 (would have been 5 if it had upgrades ;) ).
Anyone else noticing that Nitrome's using more block moving in their games? First puzzle games now moving boxes games.
I don't get why people are raving about this game, the controls are just terrible. He takes forever to respond to your commands, you can't control the jumps, the sliding is done very poorly and unrealistically, and they apparently use a random generator for all surface slickness because I have no idea what is going to happen every time I try walking on a surface. I wanted to like this game, but it decided it didn't want my love.
Now that I've played it more, The game's mountain scenery was a lot better in the original. The pictures showed you how the backgrounds would look in the level. But here, it may say a snowy ledge is the bottom!
Mt. Nitrome? Reminds me of Mt. Itoi... =D
This game is way better than the original! But I can't get past Mt. Nevereverest! It's soo hard! Oh and also, the big ice crystals have the yeti from snowdrift in them! He looks cold!
Disturbingly cute.
Does anyone know what song the very first part of the background music is from? It's naggingly familiar..
sorry Xylozex but i already beat the game before the reveiw came out. i only beat the game because at about level seven i lost two lives at once giving me infinite lives
When playing it, I ran into a glitch that gave me unlimited lives. Without that glitch, Mt. Nevereverest would have sent me straight to the asylum.
Hi!! how do you trigger the switches??
You trigger switches by firing the grapple at them.
ninti, I'm afraid your problems don't seem to be affecting me, except during the odd moment of lag. Jumps are completely controllable, response is instant, and the sliding's not that bad. Quite besides that, the floor type so far (I'm on the fifth level; it may be unpredictable later) shows exactly what's going to happen when you stand on it.
If I have a criticism, it's that levels are a little too long, and the controls can be a little slippery.
sonic lover i too ran into that glitch
I just beat and found the first part of Mt. Neverest actually harder then the final boss.
To defeat the final boss try to leave a clump of three of the enemies circling him and then use the hook to jump on his head. As he moves them faster do the same but watch your aim and the new ground enemies he will send at you.
LOVE the game, my absolute favorite nitrome game. Very good graphics. The little explorer guy is cute and the headline when you die for the fourth time is good. :)
Cheat:
On level 9 there are birds with long tongues. get yourself left with 1 live and 1 part of the health bar and jump on the north east part of a west facing bird. you won't die. you will never run out of lives. you can feel free to try things again and again and again...
This is so cool. I'm on level 6. It gets really hard when you have to get past all of the rotating spiked balls in the beginning
I usually enjoy Nitrome's games and this one was fun...for a while. At one point, around level 9, it became so incredibly hard. I spent like an hour trying to get one level done. So for the first time ever, I actually cheated on a Nitrome game with a memory hacker and gave myself infinite lives. I am usually very tolerant with Nitrome's increasing difficulty in levels but this was just ridiculous. Even with cheating, I still kept dying over and over again. And level 10 with the grappling hook on those 4 patches was nearly impossible. I don't how someone could do it WITHOUT cheating. I really hope they don't this again in the future because I don't want to have to resort to cheating due to overwhelming frustration.
I cheated too... but by exploiting their programming errors and not using a cheat engine.
What is the first and second boss called?p.s The first boss is awesome!
I need help on level 9! please help and gamerkd17 or John how do you get the unlimited lives?
GETTING THE INVINCIBLE GLITCH:
Step 1: Get to level 8
Step 2: Get to the first flag
Step 3: Get killed three times
Step 4: Get killed by the sheep things
You should have the glitch now, but it may take a few trys.
Step 5: Enjoy..... :]
LLAMAS!
Hi, can anyone please teach me how to get the invincible glitch by programming? I tried exploiting the game errors on level 8 and 9, but they didn't work. I need this unlimited lives thing to complete level 10.
Thanks!!!
Oh, repairmanman, so that's how you get infinite lives. It happened to me on level 10, but I quit. Now I wish I hadn't.
I was able, after a while and a lot of persistance, to complete the game WITHOUT the invincible glitch. You seriously don't need it. it is nice, however, to exploit the glitch later inorder to rack up your score. I don't think I would've been satisfied with beating the game by cheating.
The bosses were easy and level 10 was a breeze once I got past the annoying stage with all the ice cubes.
I FINALLY beat this (without cheating). The ice level took me forever as well as the last one before the final boss.
Great feeling of achievement once done though. Great game.
Does anyone know where the 'O' from BONUS is on level 9?? I can't see it anywhere.
There is a mistake in level 7. There are 2 U's for the bonus to collect.
how many levels are there? im on level 8
Does anyone have advice for how to get through level 5-2? I'm struggling at the part where the moving spiky balls are alternating up and down like a sound re-mixer. I try to get through, but keep dying at that part. thanks either way!
Hi! You know, there are frozen vikings from icebreaker in these levels.
On 5-2, just get under the 1st spike ball, and when the next goes up enough, get under it. Keep doing that until you get near enough to the box to shoot it.
Please help!I'm on level 8 (stage 1), and I can't figure out how to get past the part where you have to get up using all those buttons.I'm at the first flag. Suggestions?
I beat the whole thing without cheating. For level 10, with all the ice-cubes, you just need to time it all right. It's a matter of jumping at the right moment and breaking the right pieces of ice.
Got from mountain 1 to mountain 8 before losing. Anyway my score was something in the 41 thousand area.
by the way, I'm stuck on the first part of level 10! those ice cubes are SO frustrating! I've only ever passed that zone ONCE, and that was with one life left. nitrome should have thought level 10 through more. It's too hard.
Thats funny at the end I always thought it was a boy.
I found a cool glitch in level 6. I call it Missing floor glitch. In the 2nd area of the level, on the left side of the exit of this area, is a slope. Go down on it, climb up it and youll float on midair. Its the reverse of the floating bush on parasite level 15, after destroying some of the logs.
Yeah and in level 6, area 3, after the frozen viking crystal theres a
frozen Jack Frost Crystal
.
Oh the Irony. You guys are really observant.
I found a glitch in the stomping monsters area, if you defeat one while icecycles are falling, they will stop in midair.
Instead of having an "invincible" glitch, I seem to have a "killable glitch". If I'm killed by the sheep things before the first flag on Level 8, it just takes one blow to kill me after that.
