Liquid Colors

JayLiquid ColorsLiquid Colors is another creative and original puzzle game entry to our recent game design competition. It was created by DDams of France.

The objective in Liquid Colors is to turn the target square (in the lower right corner) to the target color: purple (pink or fuchsia depending on your own perspective of color). To do so, use the mouse to either add or remove wall segments by clicking anywhere on the play field. Removing a wall segment that separates two colors will mix the two resulting in a new color, the formula for which can be found in the chart in lower portion of the game window. By adding wall segments, you can create new blocks to hold desired colors for later use.

Choose between three (3) different puzzles: normal, hard, and very hard. Here's a hint to get you started: you won't have to add any wall segments to solve the normal puzzle.

Analysis: Liquid Colors is a brilliant idea for a puzzle game and one that works exceptionally well in Flash. The idea is unique and has a great deal of potential to be taken further than the 3 levels provided in this version. The implementation of the game engine appears to be of solid design, and the graphics are appealing if just a little plain. I would have preferred to see randomly generated puzzles, though that certainly wasn't a requirement for the competition. Another downside to the game, besides having gameplay dependent on color perception, is having to familiarize oneself with the color formulas before any serious puzzle solving can begin. These are smallish complaints, however. Overall, an excellent game with huge potential. I look forward to seeing where DDams takes this very creative idea.

JohnBJohn: A great puzzle idea with one of the most descriptive names ever to grace a flash game. It reminds me of Color Box that we featured several months ago, but much more dynamic. Liquid Colors gives you full control over mixing colors, allowing you to easily "quarantine" certain blocks for later mixing or build paths to mix colors that are far apart. It's fun to find the easiest solution, but I've gotten a thrill out of trying to find the most complex solution as well. Any game that lets you play around that much is worth some time. Cheers to DDams for a great game!

Walkthrough

Normal

  • remove the wall at the front of the blue on the left hand side so it can occupy the white space.

  • Remove a section of the wall on the red in the upper left corner so it can mix with the blue and make purple.

  • Remove a section at the top of the green so it mixes with the purple and forms blue. Then remove the bottom so it takes over the white space.

  • Remove the wall of the red, mixing it with the blue to form purple.

  • Mix the orange with the purple to make red.

  • Mix the last blue with the red to make purple.

  • Finally remove a wall of the white so the purple can go there.

Harder

  • Remove a section of the wall separating the green and purple, making blue.

  • Replace the wall that you just removed.

  • remove a section of the red so it takes over the white space.

  • remove the two walls between the red and blue to make purple (make sure you still have another section of blue to use later).

Hardest

  • The first step will be easier to explain with a picture. Just add in the three walls like in that.

  • remove the wall separating the orange and green in the bottom right to make yellow.

  • mix the other orange and green together making yellow again.

  • remove the wall separating the two yellows you just made.

  • Remove the wall on top of the yellow so it can mix with the white.

  • remove the wall separating the two yellows at the top.

  • Remove the wall separating the red from the yellow to make orange

  • Remove the wall of the green square so it can mix with the orange and make yellow.

  • Mix the red at the bottom with the yellow to make orange.

  • Mix the square of purple with the orange to make red.

  • Mix the remaining green and purple to make blue.

  • Mix the blue with the red to make purple.

  • Finally remove a wall of the white so the purple can go there.

I hope that all made sense =)

Hey Jay, i love your website, ever since i found it i have been on it everyday.
This game is fun, i like trying to find the solution on the different puzzles.

This was very interesting game with idea I never saw before. Some things that bothered me were the fact that colors in the mixing help section look different from colors on the stage. And that the mixing 2 colors does not produce same result as in real life, I mean mixing green and purple does not create blue.

Colorblind. Game is no fun. Although it can't be helped with this type of game, designers, PLEASE pay attention to what you require the user to do and how color-deficit vision might affect that. A good side-by-side option is to make things color AND shape based, so a user can rely on seeing the shape of an item if they can't see the color.

Thanks!

And I don't really like the pixel-style animation.

I liked this, really! I just put little squares of color all over the place for later use, because if you have all the colors, it's easy to mix your way to whatever you want.

Congratulations, you completed the hard puzzle after adding 3 and removing 5 barriers. Yay

Interesting game.. I think the best thing about this site is the variety. Any mood I'm in, there's a game for it. Pretty awesome.. Oh, and..

Green and purple don't make blue, but they do have blue in common as a primary color. If you mix two secondary colors, they turn into the primary color which they have in common. Probably to keep the number of colors needed to a minimum.

Hey, have you thought of calling your game 'Mondrian,' after the painted Piet Mondrian? Here's an image of one of his paintings:

what do you click to play it?

nice game...I played all the puzzles! The grey colour is very irritating!

hehe

if you are really quick at the start you can put in boxes before the coulors are there so i managed to trap the grey in a much smaller area beween the purple and green in top right and orange in the bottom right

I have two words for you: "Level Editor."

Best. Candidate. For. Custom. Levels. Ever.

@ l0ser
Did you know that everyone is colorblind? It's true! Violet is poorly seen by "normal" people, and ultraviolet, a perfectly good color seen by bees and birds, isn't sensed at all. So really, we're all missing something.

I think it's fascinating, what different eyes make of the same world. I think that with genetic engineering, we'll at last be able to explore things like that.

In the meantime, let's invent a pair of glasses that shows anyone how l0ser sees.
