The summer of surreal surprises continues with this Flash adventure game from Slovakia. Haluz is a game of the point-and-click variety that contains several scenes and a variety of simple puzzles that must be solved to advance.
What do you do when a very large bird makes off with your rooftop satellite dish? Well, use the resources around you to your best advantage and get it back.
Analysis: Haluz is a beautiful game within its class and the closest I've seen come to the stunning imagery seen in Samorost, which is without a doubt the inspiration behind this game. Although similar in appearance, the puzzles here pale in comparison and are sometimes awkward and confusing as to what must be done. For example, the very first and last scenes took me quite a bit of time before I figured out what to do. Still, if you love games like this you will likely enjoy Haluz, too. Click.
(I'm guessing the name of the game comes from the little guy that waves "hello" at you in each scene?)
Cheers to Patrick, Graeme, and Tom for suggesting this one today. =)

A nice game. Not the best, but it's good for passing the time. Some of the sections were hard, especially the last one and the one by the lake. Anyway, I think that the backgrounds are real pictures. ^_^

Gah! Completely stuck at the very first screen. The only things I seem to be able to do are:
Drag the cheese, but it won't go anywhere
Get the mouse to stick his nose out, but he does nothing
Hover over or click the flowers, which makes them smaller, but does nothing else.
Help please!

Thanks, Tonypa, I've corrected it. I was going by a list of Internet suffixes that I looked up, some of which didn't even have the .eu suffix. The first one I found had it listed as "Europe."

Thank you, Jay, of course Slovakia is part of Europe, just that Europe is large and involves many countries. So, saying the game comes from Europe is not wrong, but saying it comes from Slovakia is more precise.
The eu suffix is new one, added this year I think. In theory every person or company from any country in the European Union can register it. Just reminding that not all european countries are part of European Union. It might also happen that not all countries in the European Union are european (Turkey, Russia).

The name is actually in Slovak language and it is a pun. Haluz means both a branch of a tree and is a slang word for hallucination. It has nothing to do with pioneer, I am afraid as stated by someone before me.
Posted by: makrousek | August 6, 2006 6:16 AM
I'm having trouble placing the ruler, it won't go on the spoon. I have the razors and the satellite on though.

Posted by: FERGZ | August 7, 2006 10:04 AM
Okay, on the screen with fire and feather, I've done everything needed to get elephant man to climb onto the horned snail. There he sits, waving at me...and the only hotspots I can find are the farter and the hide-a-bird, neither of which appears to do anything useful. Mr. Elephant looks like he's ready to ride, but how do I get him going??

Great-looking game, but quite unpolished.
By far the messiest thing is dragging those big objects around. I hated when Samorost 2 implemented this instead of the simple click-at-the-right-place-at-the-right-time mechanics, but at least there it kinda worked. In this game it looks clumsy and amateurish. Puzzles are either too easy or pure guesswork.
I am looking forward for the next effort of the designers, since it seems there is some talent behind all this. All in all, the game is a dud, but a dud with promise of future goodness.
P.S. I would get rid of the farting bird. Really.

Re Hebrew in Slovakia

but it's from slovakia so... i think it's only coincidence.
Are you saying you think *no one* in Slovakia knows hebrew - perhaps ALL Jews were killed during the WWII Nazi occupation?
This could be a bilingual pun

Is that a lobster? I thought it is a wild flower eating the butterflies up..Don't think too much, build an airplane and go back home for a tv show! (it did took me quite some time to build it cause it's not as easy like you think as simple dragging, you must know where to put the objects first)

Posted by: george | July 27, 2007 3:15 PM
Finished the puzzle, but only with liberal use of the "tab" key (not to mention lots of help from JIG-people in making the spoon-glider).
My take on it:
Haluz is a visually rich game, reminiscent of Samorost, but that's where the comparison ends. While, as in "Samorost", you "can't do anything wrong," it's still largely a matter of trial-and-error. The point-and-click interface is combined with an element of "drag the pieces to the right spots." Unfortunately, these spots are hard to find, and there's no definitive sound or graphic that confirms a move is "right." It's that uncertainty that makes it frustrating. Gorgeous graphics can only count for so much.
It's no accident that this has a strong Samorost-like feel. According to another website , the author's goal was a sort of mini-tribute:
“My name is Tomas, I am 27 and I live in Slovakia. I wrote this game just for fun and in my free-time, it took me about 7 months:)
The reason why I made this game was that after playing Samorost I was so inspired that I had to make something similar:):)
I have a lot of photos from nature and this was the way how to use them in a funy way…
For all people that would like to know what Haluz means: it is a tree-branch in Slovak language, but it also means something weird, dream-like and funny (from the word “halucination”).”
So consider it an homage, and a nice way to show some beautiful photography. In that, I'd say he did a darned good job. :o)

Fun game! Does anyone know what the music is on the part where there's the trumpet snail and the farting bird? Sound familiar... But I can't put my finger on it... And it's driving me mad.

can someone please make a full walk through pls? im stuck.
Posted by: candice | August 23, 2007 2:22 AM
Dear Jay and JIG Community:
I would like to reply to Candice's request and create a step-by-step walkthough for Haluz. I think I know how to use the "spoiler" tags now, and I've played it through a couple of times (with your help). It would be good practice for me, and I'd like to offer JIG at least a few walkthroughs. He's/you've given me a lot.
Please give me a day to recover. Yesterday I lost a very close friend to cancer. I'm a bit of a mess.
Is there anything I need to know before I write this out? Do I send it anywhere in particular, or just post it here? Any other really obvious info that I'm totally missing?
Thanks in advance any help and advice.
- Merri

That RULER, dagnabbit!! It won't go anywhere! Isn't it supposed to be like, aligned with the spoon handle or something close?
It's maddening. The little screw also, won't go anywhere. A few pointed hints wouldn't hurt, if anyone's got 'em. =\ Pleeeeeeease.

September 28, 2007 1:40 AM
1. Click the door on the right. Drag the cheese in the small upper black hole. The snake will eat the mouse and you will be able to go right.
2. Once hanged in a tree with your parachute, run your mouse over the bird to fall down. Click the small lever to your left and hang the noose on your ship. Click the elevator next to the tree and climb to the top of the tree. Click the spinning thing and a strange alien appears. Wait a few seconds until he goes to the bathroom and then click again the spinning thing. After you felt down, drag the spinning thing to the rear of the ship. Click the engine of the elevator and drag it on the front part of the ship.
3. Click the snail with a tuba to get eaten. Switch the red and green cables and then click the little character. Click the tape player and then click the switch on the right. Grab the piece of tape that pops out and attach it to the center of the right circle. Grab the feather in the basket and drag it to the top of the nail. Drag the nail on the head of the snake and then click the switch of the tape recorder. Once back outside, drag the feather in the fire. Click the right flower and then click on the tuba snail. Drag the fishing pole towards the character and then drag the light bulb to the end of the fishing pole.
4. Click the right bottom hole and then click the top right one. Click the spoon from the nest. Drag the two razor blades on the left part of the handle of the spoon. Drag the dish antenna in the spoon. Drag the ruler right just left to the dish antenna. Drag the nail/screw on the ruler to attach it. You made a sort of airplane. Click the little character to use it and go back home. Congrats!
