The Happy Escape 6

GrinnypIt's a lovely day so you decide to go to the Miyagi teahouse where they have fabulous coffee and cake. Unfortunately you suddenly feel sleepy and next thing you know you wake up in a different place, having been kidnapped by some old guy for money. Is this the opening sequence of Criminal Minds or the setup for the latest Tesshi-e room escape? Who can tell the difference anymore? But yes, Tesshi-e is back with a holiday-themed treat, The Happy Escape 6. If the scenery looks a bit familiar, it's because we've been here before. As with all of the other happy escape games the objective is not only to get out of Santa's shack, but to find ten happy coins scattered about within the various puzzles in the cabin.

The Happy Escape 6 Although the scenery is looking terribly familiar by this time, Tesshi-e has created new clues and new puzzles for this lovely present to you, the room escape fan. Great design, fabulous controls, trippy music, everything you could want from Tesshi-e is here. The only downside is that it's on the short side, and could have been fleshed out a bit more, fun as it is. Let's not complain, though, since Tesshi-e has chosen to give us a fabulous Christmas present (three, actually, at the end of the game). Celebrate the holiday season with another winner from Tesshi-e. And maybe have a little chat with Santa, anyone who is getting this forgetful maybe needs to think a bit about retirement.

The Happy Escape 6 Walkthrough

General Information

  • There is only one way to get out, but there are three presents waiting for you at the end. You can only choose one.

  • There are color-based puzzles and clues, but there is a mechanic in the game that tells you the color if you click on an object (if it is necessary).

  • Remember to examine everything you pick up, items may be hiding other items.

  • Items also may have more than one use.

  • Don't forget to choose the language before you begin.

  • Good luck!

Exploration

  • You begin facing the double doors that go out. To the left of the doors is a red post box that needs a key.

  • To the right of the doors is a low table that has a machine on top of it involving six Mr. Birdy figurines. The table has six buttons that control the colors of the Mr. Birdy figurines.

  • Above the Mr. Birdy table is a picture, the wobbly picture puzzle. Note the letters H C S D in the picture.

  • To the right of the Mr. Birdy table is a Christmas tree. Note the star on the base of the tree.

  • Turn right.

  • You are now facing a wall with a single window. Below the window is a console table, click on it for a close up.

  • On top of the table are two things, a machine and a Mr. Hippo.

  • The machine appears to be a humidifier. If you click on it and open the reservoir it has no water.

  • The Mr. Hippo appears to be holding something in his mouth. He has three buttons.

  • Inside the console table are three boxes, all moved to the left.

  • Click on the right box to move it to the right. Click on the middle box to move it to the right. Note that something is revealed. Click on it (Happy Coin #1). Back up.

  • To the right of the window, center of the wall, is a small wooden alcove. Click on it for a close up.

  • Inside the alcove is a plant, click on it to pick it up. Take the revealed object (Happy Coin #2). Back up.

  • Just to the right of the wooden alcove is a large urn. If you click on it you can see that it is filled with water, and that you can't see the bottom.

  • To the right of the urn is a long framed item. Click on it for a close up.

  • The frame has three wreaths in it, labeled snow, star, and socks. There is a three digit code beneath the wreaths.

  • Back up and turn right.

  • You are now facing a fireplace. To the left of the fireplace is a cabinet for firewood. To the right of the fireplace is a bed.

  • Click on the firewood cabinet for a close up.

  • To the left of the firewood cabinet is a set of fire tools, click on them to get a fireplace shovel.

  • The doors of the firewood cabinet are locked and there is a three-button lock.

  • On top of the cabinet is some sort of mechanism, click on it for a close up.

  • This device has a Mr. Birdy coffee mug and a four digit code lock. Back up twice.

  • Click on the fire for a close up. Nice, a toasty warm fire. Back up.

  • Click on the mantle of the fireplace for a close up.

  • There are several things of interest here. There are two candelabras, each with three candles.

  • There is a wooden box, the lid of which is screwed down.

  • There is a Santa figurine. The lock on the figurine has three dials, each dial with a Santa head and a pointy green thing coming out of the chin.

  • Back up twice, then click on the bed for a close up.

  • Note the picture of seven stockings on the bed frame. Click beneath the bed.

  • If there's something there, it's too dark to see. Back up twice and turn right.

  • You are now facing a wall with two windows. The right window has four snowflakes in the panes.

  • There is a small table between the two windows, click on it for a close up.

  • On top of the table is a case. There is a glass part of the case on top which holds a yummy looking cake and a happy coin.

  • Below the cake is a small wooden cabinet with four drawers. Note that each drawer has a card suit on it, hearts, clubs, spades, and diamonds.

  • The heart and diamond doors will not open. The spade door appears to be missing a knob.

  • If you click and hold the club door you will see another Mr. Hippo. This one has a pattern on it, it might be important.

  • Back up and turn right. You are now facing the door out again.

  • Time to solve some puzzles!

The Fire and the Coffee Mug

  • Turn right (or left) twice to face the fireplace.

  • Click on the fire for a close up.

  • Use the spade on the fire to move it. It reveals a happy coin and a four digit code, 8715.

  • The happy coin is too hot to pick up, take it with the spade.

  • Back up and click on the firewood cabinet for a close up.

  • Click on that device on top of the cabinet for a close up, and use the code you just got from the fire on it.

  • Take the mug. While it is still in close up, click on the bottom of the mug to turn it over. Take the happy coin (Happy Coin #3).

  • You can look inside the mug, it is empty.

  • Back up twice.

The Humidifier and the Wreaths

  • Turn left to face the wall with one window.

  • Click on the wreaths for a close up.

  • The words under the wreaths, snow, star, and socks, represent shapes that we've seen in the room.

  • There were four snowflakes, one star, and seven socks seen in various places.

  • But 417 doesn't work as a code!

  • Let's go back to this later. Back up.

  • Pull up the spade from your inventory. If you try to take the happy coin, you will find out that it is too hot.

  • Maybe we can cool it down?

  • Remember, that big urn is full of water. Click on the urn for a close up.

  • Use the spade on the urn and...ooops, we've lost the happy coin.

  • Hmmm, maybe we can use the water in the humidifier. Use the mug on the water to fill it and back up.

  • Click on the humidifier twice for a close up, then open the reservoir.

  • Use the mug on the reservoir, close the lid, and back up once.

  • Click on the button on the front of the humidifier and voila! The steam reveals some symbols on the window.

  • Star snowflake stocking + snowflake stocking star, I bet that's a clue for the wreaths!

  • Back up and click on the wreaths for a close up.

    • There are 4 snowflakes, 1 star, and 7 stockings (socks) to be found in the room.

    • Plug those numbers into the symbol math you just found on the window and you get 147 + 471, which equals 618.

    • 618 must be the code for the three digit code beneath the wreaths.

  • Enter the code beneath the wreaths and the box will pop open. Click inside to get a flashlight.

  • While the flashlight is in close up, click on the front to turn it on.

  • Close down the flashlight and click and hold on the open box, inside is a clue.

  • The clue appears to be three asterisk shapes with some green dots on them.

  • It's a clue, but for what?

Santa

  • Back up and turn right.

  • Click on the mantel for a close up, then click on the Santa figurine for a close up.

  • Look at the knobs with the Santa heads. Notice that they have eight directions, and those little green dots on the bottom of the dials.

  • Maybe the clue we just saw is for this?

  • Turn the dials to match the clue, that means turning the first dial until the green dot is to the right (six clicks). Turn the second dial until the green dot is to the left (two clicks). The third dot is already at the bottom.

  • The box should open, revealing a happy coin (Happy Coin #4). Take it and back up twice.

The Flashlight

  • Let's see what the flashlight can do for us.

  • If you haven't already, turn on the flashlight by pulling it up from your inventory and clicking on the front.

  • Turn left to face the wall with one window.

  • Click on the urn with the water for a close up.

  • Hey, we can see in there now! The happy coin is definitely in there, along with another object. Shame we can't reach either of them.

  • Was there anywhere else in the room that the flashlight might be useful?

  • Back up, then turn right to face the fireplace.

  • Click on the bed for a close up, then click underneath the bed.

  • Yay, we can see underneath now! Take the screwdriver and back up twice.

The Candles and Mr. Birdy

  • Click on the mantel for a close up.

  • Click on the wooden box for a close up.

  • Use the screwdriver to open the box.

  • Open the box and take the happy coin (Happy Coin #5).

  • Click on the bottom of the box to remove it and you will find matches, take them.

  • Back up once and use the matches on the candles.

  • Note that the candle flames are different colors. The colors are pretty faded, so if you have trouble seeing them just click on the flame, the game will tell you what color it is.

  • Note that the candles are arranged in the same way as the Mr. Birdy figures in that puzzle by the door.

  • Back up and turn left (or right) twice to face the door.

  • Click on the Mr. Birdy table for a close up.

  • Using the buttons, turn the Mr. Birdy figurines the same colors as the candles (left to right: red, yellow, green, green, blue, red).

  • If you have trouble seeing the colors, click on a button, then click on the Mr. Birdy. The game will tell you what color it has changed.

  • When you enter the code correctly, a small door will pop open, revealing a happy coin. Take the happy coin (Happy Coin #6).

  • Note that in that small space is a lock that needs a key.

  • Back up.

Mr. Hippo

  • You know, we have the clue for the Mr. Hippo.

  • Remember, there are two Mr. Hippo figures in the room, the one beneath the window, and the one in the cabinet with the card suit doors.

  • The one behind the club door, which you can see if you click and hold the door, has some markings on it.

  • The markings either hook to the left, to the right, or are straight up and down.

    • Remember, Mr. Hippo has three buttons.

    • The markings on the Mr. Hippo in the cabinet either have a left hook, a right hook, or are straight up and down.

    • These represent left, right, or middle.

    • Looking at the markings the code is left, middle, right, right, middle, right.

  • Turn right to face the wall with one window.

  • Click on the table with the humidifier for a close up.

  • Click on Mr. Hippo for a close up.

  • Enter the code you discovered on the other Mr. Hippo.

  • Mr. Hippo's mouth will open and you can take the object (knob).

  • Back up twice.

The Card Suit Cabinet and the Wobbly Picture Puzzle

  • Remember that cabinet underneath the cake? One of the doors is missing a knob.

  • Turn right (or left) twice to face the wall with the two windows.

  • Click on the table for a close up.

  • Place the knob on the spade door.

  • Hmmm, I can't open the spade door, maybe I need the key? There's a keyhole above.

  • But wait, I can open the clubs door! Although, when I try to open it again, it won't open.

  • But now the spade door will open. If you click and hold, you can see inside, otherwise the door closes quick.

  • Now I can't open the spade door, what's going on?

    • If you experiment a little, you will find that you can only open the doors in a specific sequence of six, and that the doors won't stay open.

    • The sequence is clubs, spades, hearts, spades, hearts, and diamonds. Notice that in the diamonds cubby is a key that you can't get.

    • Also notice that after you open the last in the sequence (diamonds), the cake display case will open. However, if you start the sequence again, it closes.

  • Open the doors in the sequence you discovered, and stop after the last one (don't try to open another door). Notice that the cake display case is open.

  • Click on the display case for a close up and take the happy coin (Happy Coin #7).

  • Back up twice.

  • We obviously can't get that key out of the diamonds door yet, but maybe that sequence is important somewhere else?

  • Turn right to face the door. Click on the wobbly picture puzzle above the Mr. Birdy table.

  • Look closely at the picture. Those letters mean something...

    • The letters are the first letters of the card suits, hearts, clubs, spades, and diamonds. Notice that the letters are in the same position as the suits on the cabinet with hearts in the upper left, clubs upper right, spades lower left and diamonds lower right.

    • Try clicking on the corners of the picture in the same sequence you used to open the doors: upper right, lower left, upper left, lower left, upper left, lower right.

  • If you enter the sequence correctly, the picture will move up. In the alcove behind it are a happy coin (Happy Coin #8) and a spade shaped key. Take both and back up.

  • Turn left to face the wall with both windows. Click on the table for a close up.

  • Use the spade key on the keyhole above the doors and it unlocks them all (and the cake case).

  • Open the diamond door and take the triangle key. Back up.

Getting Out

  • Turn right to face the door. You can try the triangle key on the post box, but it doesn't work. Where else did we need a key?

  • Click on the Mr. Birdy table for a close up. Open that little door on the right side of the table where we found the happy coin. Yes, it needs a key.

  • Use the triangle key on that lock and another secret compartment will open up. Take the revealed item (tongs) and back up.

  • Now we can finally get that happy coin from the urn!

  • Turn right to face the wall with one window. Click on the urn for a close up.

  • Use the tongs to get the happy coin (Happy Coin #9) and the other object (ball).

  • Note that the ball has a key inside. While the ball is in close up, click on it to open it and get the circle key.

  • Back up and turn left.

  • Click on the post box for a close up. Use the circle key to open the post box.

  • Take the object from inside (card). Notice that the card has a happy coin! (Happy Coin #10)

  • Take the happy coin and click on the card to turn it around. Note that you will have to pull the card up from your inventory again, and you will have to click and hold to see the back of the card.

  • There are a series of Mr. Birdies on the card, some facing right, some facing left, and some facing the middle.

  • Yes, another left, right, middle clue.

  • The only one of these left is the firewood cabinet, it has a three button puzzle.

  • Back up and turn left (or right) twice to face the fireplace.

  • Click on the cabinet twice for a close up.

    • The sequence on the card indicates right, left, left, middle, left, middle.

  • Click the buttons on the cabinet in the order indicated by the card.

  • Once you enter the sequence, click on the doors to open them. Inside you will find Santa's sack, take it.

  • While the sack is in close up you should notice the heart shaped key taped to it, take the key.

  • Back up twice and turn left (or right) twice to face the door.

  • Click on the door for a close up, then use the heart key to escape.

  • Merry Christmas! You now have a choice of Christmas presents.

  • The left box is a purple Mr. Birdy figurine and a Mr. Birdy happy coin.

  • The middle box is a Mr. Hippo figurine and a Santa happy coin.

  • The right box is a jeweled circle key pendant.

Who is the SantaCllaus?

Another excellent game by Tesshi-e. Thank Santa Claus for another year of 11 Tesshi-e games; especially in a year that I considered below normal for escape game designers. I hope 2014 proves to be more challenging.

I wonder if a last minute entry will make it to the top of 2013 Best Escape Games.

Previous Christmas Tesshi-e games:

2011 The Happy Escape

2010 Escape From Santa's Room

2009 Escape of Santa Claus 3

Woo hooo a Tesshi-e - it's beginning to feel a lot like christmas

Hmmm, that's odd...

I didn't get the Happy coin when I used the tongs on the urn

Gabe have you

dropped (use shovel with urn) the coin in there before from the hot shovel?

Reply

Out of Santa's shack with Santa's sack. Someone went nuts with the glitter flask in there.

Reply

@Aroz: Couldn't agree more. Tesshi-e just keeps 'em coming in an otherwise rather disappointing 2013 for us ETR buffs (I'm not being ungrateful here, just a bit spoiled). Hopefully, we will see some serious launches from our favourite creators in the year to come.

Reply

@sadagar: I read that NEUTRAL (vision, linkage etc) is making another room escape, I really can't wait for this.
It's sure to make my 2014

Wouldn't drugging and kidnapping me put Santa on his own Naughty List?
