Z-Rox
"Z-Rox" is what happens when a punk music fanatic invents a startlingly pure and original puzzle game concept, but just can't help topping it off with a creamy dollop of vanilla Xtreme-ness. It won't throw you into a mosh pit, but it will test your visualization skills over the course of 100 devilishly simple levels.

Very cool game. I'm up to level 62. I can see exactly what the shape is but I have no idea what to call it. That's the one shame I find in these games is when you must unlock every level in sequence. I've always appreciated it when there are, say, three new levels unlocked at a time letting you skip a couple if necessary.

happy z-roxing
have fun :)
I don't think the title is quite nonsense. I think it's an intentional pun. Back before we had scanners, what sort of machine worked in exactly this way, scanning across a 2D image from one side to the other? And what was the most popular brand name for them?
(And meanwhile, grar, 78 doesn't look like anything... well, it looks like a bunch of things, but nothing I could put a name to...)
Wow! some were really hard, and even after I looked at the spoiler, I still couldn't see some of them. The moon still has me baffled. Sometimes if I just stare blankly, I can actually see the image as if it were whole. I only had to look at the spoilers after level 58. Seriously, how do you get parking out of that?
This has got to be the most awesome game I've come across.
I'm on level 64 so far, it's dead easy - if you can trick your mind into interpreting it like there's something moving behind the a screen (like the intro shows).
It's almost surreal to watch how your brain puts it together automagically.
Really loving it - and I'm so recommending it to everybody I know.
scroll:
Sorry if I'm being too vague. Let me clear this up. I know what the title means. I've heard of Xerox. I think it's clever.
But replacing the "Xe" with a "Z" is still a silly thing to do, in my eyes. It's a little like naming your clothing brand "Kr3w" or naming your movie "Vampiyaz"; it takes a normal word and twists it into the shape of your own sub-culture. And because of Arsenault's background, I think that's what he did.
It's not a pun, because "Z-Rox" isn't anything on it's own. It's just Xtreme-izing the word "Xerox". Which, to me, seems like nonsense.
Great stuff.
Seems to use a fair number of
mathematical symbols
which if you aren't used to looking at, I could see being very frustrating.
Once I got past being able to type out what it is (that wasn't particularly clear to me, I thought it meant the symbols could be more than one letter, not the answer is a word), I sped through this pretty quick. It was fun though, a few had me thinking and trying to picture them growing above the black line.
Yeah Taybo, I would like it to be a little slower. Especially for the later ones, a speed dial would be really nice. And Psychotronic, I understand what you mean about turning everything into youth-speak, but on the other hand, it's not like he could name it Xerox(TM). This is sort of a neat way of getting the name he wants for the program, but at the same time making sure the lawyers never come knocking (I know, who's really going to sue over a cute little game, but these days you just can't tell).
I love how this game forces you to trick your brain in order to see the shape behind, neat little idea. However, I've run into an unexpected problem with Level 45: I know what the shape is, but I can't find the the thing on my keyboard. I know there's a key combination to get it on this laptop, I just can't remember what it is. This game has taught me that while being good at recognising shapes through a slit is quite cool, it can't help you with life's more practical difficulties.
Ugh...I'm stuck all the way over on level 56. It's obvious what it is: it's four zig zagging lines. But..what does that *mean*? It must symbolize something I'm not aware of. Hmmm..
Mr. Guest - the start of the game should have shown you an explanitory turtorial. But basically, you're trying to identify objects as they pass through a one-pixel-tall slit in the game screen. Hence, if the game shows you a short segment that moves from right to left, you're actually looking at a diagonal line. The segment is the line's width, and the motion comes from the line moving exactly upward. Like the way a scanner sees the world. Or a Xerox machine. Thus the title of the game :p
It took me a while to get that the title is a play on the word xerox. Anyways a fun game but, I'm stuck around level 25. I was never very good at games like this, numbers and logic are more my thing. The other thing that annoys me is the game window size. I mean there are more ads than game on the page.
Nice idea, and really original, but I've found the game a little bit exhausting. This is not a brain-burner but more like a test of vision and symbol recognition..
I passed the first 30 levels but watching what is basically a single line hurt my eyes just a bit too much. I think I prefer my brain getting a workout, not my eyes.
all i wanna know is what these have to do with the temporal lobe... i would think the prefrontal cortex and occipital lobe would mostly be involved - prefrontal for abstract spatial/visual reasoning, and occipital for visual processing... maybe i'm just missing something, but i think temporal is basically for auditory processing...
Fantastic game. Having a pen and paper handy really helps. I got my sisters to help me interpret the pictures i drew eight times, but apart from that it was all good. Note that some levels accept multiple answers, which i thought was a great feature
eg:
lvl. 52
'tear' or 'drop' both work (maybe 'tear drop' too)
and lvl. 62
both 'moon' or 'crescent' work (and maybe 'crescent moon')

I was on level 97 and my first guess was "taijitu," but that was wrong so I thought ok maybe the person who made the game didn't know the name of the symbol so I tried "taoism." Also wrong. I gave up on that idea and tried other things until I gave up and checked the walkthrough, and it was "yinyang." I can see where it's coming from, but yin and yang are the two taoist ideals represented by the symbol, which is called the taijitu. It frustrates me that neither taijitu nor taoism was accepted there.
