PsychotronicZ-RoxToday we have an extraordinary new puzzle game from Marco Arsenault, who is probably best known in the Flash world for the popular music sequencing toy Punk-o-Matic (language warning on that link). Z-Rox won't throw you into a mosh pit, but it will test your visualization skills over the course of 100 devilishly simple levels. Each one will show you something 2-dimensional—a letter, a number, a shape, a symbol—and your job is simply to name it. But you only get to see a 1-dimensional slice of the picture at a time, as though it were being scanned from top to bottom by a horizontal laser. You must form a complete mental image, based on your view through that 2-pixel-tall moving window. Some answers are a single keyboard character, while others require you to type out a full word.

The first 50 levels basically keep the training wheels on. You might hit a few bumps, but you can probably get past them using the time honored techniques of Walking Away From the Game for a While, and/or Shaking Your Hands Like There's Bugs On Them. It's the second 50 levels (the "extreme" levels, sigh) that will really test your sanity. You may need a pencil and paper, and possibly some Excedrin (or X-Hedr-N, as they say on the extreme streets of Extreme Town). Nevertheless, I encourage you to clear as many levels as you can before asking for help, because the sense of accomplishment for solving this one on your own is tremendous.

Analysis: Yes, yes, the title is silly. "Z-Rox" is what happens when a punk music fanatic invents a startlingly pure and original puzzle game concept, but just can't help topping it off with a creamy dollop of vanilla Xtreme-ness. But as the ducks say when they're feeling indifferent: "Queh." Very little could diminish the greatness of this game. Z-Rox grabs hold of the forgotten corners of your temporal cortex and wrings them out like used nappies. It's about as punk as a frontal lobotomy, but to be fair, frontal lobotomies are not entirely un-punk.

Z-Rox gives you good value, with several unlockable modes of play and an impeccable user interface. The unskippable and lengthy tutorial at the beginning is a little annoying, but you only have to watch it once in your life. Although it's a relatively short loop, the music by Josh Hunsaker does a good job assisting both your focus and your calm.

The big discovery for me is how beautiful letters can be when described in motion this way. Their slopes, their curves—it's like watching a kind of digital calligraphy. You can almost feel the letters being physically sculpted in your mind. It's an unusual sensation. Like I always say, really unique and well-executed games can give you something no other medium can.

Okay, okay, maybe Z-Rox is kind of extreme after all. If you need me, I'll be on my deck. And by "deck", I mean "skateboard". And by "skateboard", I mean "couch".

Play Z-Rox

Cheers to Cheryl, Michelle, and Vito for sending this one in! =)

Very cool game. I'm up to level 62. I can see exactly what the shape is but I have no idea what to call it. That's the one shame I find in these games is when you must unlock every level in sequence. I've always appreciated it when there are, say, three new levels unlocked at a time letting you skip a couple if necessary.

Reply

31 is the first level I've seriously been stuck on.

I can see it, I just can't describe it.

31 was tricky:

It's a common geometric shape.

Another common geometric shape. Just keep counting up the sides.

I don't think the title is quite nonsense. I think it's an intentional pun. Back before we had scanners, what sort of machine worked in exactly this way, scanning across a 2D image from one side to the other? And what was the most popular brand name for them?

(And meanwhile, grar, 78 doesn't look like anything... well, it looks like a bunch of things, but nothing I could put a name to...)

Reply

Well spotted Jota, the title actually makes perfect sense now.

Reply

Made it to 52 without help. Pretty challenging! Totally stumped now, though :P

Reply

Wow! some were really hard, and even after I looked at the spoiler, I still couldn't see some of them. The moon still has me baffled. Sometimes if I just stare blankly, I can actually see the image as if it were whole. I only had to look at the spoilers after level 58. Seriously, how do you get parking out of that?

Reply

Have you not heard of the Xerox machine?

Contrary to popular beliefs, they are still being used today. In many offices and print/copy shops around the world.

Nonsense, indeed.

Reply

Made it to about 55 when I started having trouble. Some of them are way too abstract.

But I got parking, believe it or not.

Reply

It's much easier (and cheatier) if you zoom in your screen a little (like, if you are on a mac). The Letters and shapes can be seen rather clearly as this game is made with a real letter moving across a mask (or a "slit" in the middle)

Reply

the hardest ones for me were the geometric shapes :)

Reply
Stål-Långben September 22, 2008 12:01 PM

I can honestly say that this is one of the worst games I've ever played (at least reviewd here at JIG). I made it to level 30-something but I didn't enjoy it at all.

But maybe that's just my opinion.

Reply

This has got to be the most awesome game I've come across.

I'm on level 64 so far, it's dead easy - if you can trick your mind into interpreting it like there's something moving behind the a screen (like the intro shows).

It's almost surreal to watch how your brain puts it together automagically.

Really loving it - and I'm so recommending it to everybody I know.

Reply

Great stuff.

Seems to use a fair number of

mathematical symbols

which if you aren't used to looking at, I could see being very frustrating.

Once I got past being able to type out what it is (that wasn't particularly clear to me, I thought it meant the symbols could be more than one letter, not the answer is a word), I sped through this pretty quick. It was fun though, a few had me thinking and trying to picture them growing above the black line.

Reply

I bet there's actually a sport called Extreme Xeroxing.

Reply

It's going too fast. I might have a chance if it was a little slower.

Reply
OrigamiMarie September 22, 2008 3:59 PM

Yeah Taybo, I would like it to be a little slower. Especially for the later ones, a speed dial would be really nice. And Psychotronic, I understand what you mean about turning everything into youth-speak, but on the other hand, it's not like he could name it Xerox(TM). This is sort of a neat way of getting the name he wants for the program, but at the same time making sure the lawyers never come knocking (I know, who's really going to sue over a cute little game, but these days you just can't tell).

Reply

This is not a brain teaser - it's a test of vision. Mee to stuck at level 11 and got to that with ease. I know how lvl 11 looks but I don't know any such letter/number/symbol - at least not on my keyboard :)

Reply

Post and ye shall find... this time lvl 11 :)

Reply

Got until level 35 in about 10 minutes and got totally bored :(

The idea is good and original, but I don't think it's enough for a whole game.

Reply

I love how this game forces you to trick your brain in order to see the shape behind, neat little idea. However, I've run into an unexpected problem with Level 45: I know what the shape is, but I can't find the the thing on my keyboard. I know there's a key combination to get it on this laptop, I just can't remember what it is. This game has taught me that while being good at recognising shapes through a slit is quite cool, it can't help you with life's more practical difficulties.

Reply
Vogonviking September 22, 2008 5:01 PM

I just wish it would load so I can try it!!

Reply

Xixen: On level 45 you can type the name of the symbol. It's known by several names, and one of them works.

"number sign" and "sharp" don't work.

Maybe if you pound on your keyboard a bit.

POUND

Reply

BioLarzen - I found myself using my brain more than my eyes. Especially later on when, even if you sketch the picture out, it's not always apparent what the object is right away.

Stål-Långben and gzur... your back-to-back comments made me laugh!

Reply

Maybe I am not seeing the point, but can someone explain this game? I am not seeing any of the answers not even #1.

Reply
zbeeblebrox September 23, 2008 1:34 AM

Ugh...I'm stuck all the way over on level 56. It's obvious what it is: it's four zig zagging lines. But..what does that *mean*? It must symbolize something I'm not aware of. Hmmm..

Mr. Guest - the start of the game should have shown you an explanitory turtorial. But basically, you're trying to identify objects as they pass through a one-pixel-tall slit in the game screen. Hence, if the game shows you a short segment that moves from right to left, you're actually looking at a diagonal line. The segment is the line's width, and the motion comes from the line moving exactly upward. Like the way a scanner sees the world. Or a Xerox machine. Thus the title of the game :p

Reply

It took me a while to get that the title is a play on the word xerox. Anyways a fun game but, I'm stuck around level 25. I was never very good at games like this, numbers and logic are more my thing. The other thing that annoys me is the game window size. I mean there are more ads than game on the page.

I was mad on level 100, because I totally figured it out, but it wasn't accepting it. Turns out, it's the only puzzle that requires spaces in the answer.

Reply

Any help on level 64? I've seen its answer, but still don't understand why...

Reply

Wait, I got it.

It's not DIE as a verb, but as a noun =P

Reply

I really wish that it would show you the pictures after you enter the correct answer. I admittedly completed 70% of the game with the walkthrough, and even after I read what the right answer was, I still couldn't see it sometimes.

Reply

Good game. Although level 24 had me flummoxed for a while because unbeknownst to me...

Trapezoid and Trapezium have opposite meanings here in the UK to what they have in the US. So that shape was a TRAPEZIUM to me.

Reply

Nice idea, and really original, but I've found the game a little bit exhausting. This is not a brain-burner but more like a test of vision and symbol recognition..

I passed the first 30 levels but watching what is basically a single line hurt my eyes just a bit too much. I think I prefer my brain getting a workout, not my eyes.

Reply

I beat the game. I loved it. I only needed to cheat for the spelling of trapezoid. Lol. And I didn't understand the circle with a P in it, so I cheated for those types too. And the scale. I don't know how i got 100 without cheating.

Reply

Ah, I love this one. Currently at 64, going to take a while to figure that out...

Reply
toferlicious September 26, 2008 3:14 AM

all i wanna know is what these have to do with the temporal lobe... i would think the prefrontal cortex and occipital lobe would mostly be involved - prefrontal for abstract spatial/visual reasoning, and occipital for visual processing... maybe i'm just missing something, but i think temporal is basically for auditory processing...

the toughest part i find was try to place a name to the images. like in level64, i saw it as a circle in a box, but had no idea how to call it. nice game in any case.

Fantastic game. Having a pen and paper handy really helps. I got my sisters to help me interpret the pictures i drew eight times, but apart from that it was all good. Note that some levels accept multiple answers, which i thought was a great feature
eg:
lvl. 52

'tear' or 'drop' both work (maybe 'tear drop' too)

and lvl. 62

both 'moon' or 'crescent' work (and maybe 'crescent moon')

I was on level 97 and my first guess was "taijitu," but that was wrong so I thought ok maybe the person who made the game didn't know the name of the symbol so I tried "taoism." Also wrong. I gave up on that idea and tried other things until I gave up and checked the walkthrough, and it was "yinyang." I can see where it's coming from, but yin and yang are the two taoist ideals represented by the symbol, which is called the taijitu. It frustrates me that neither taijitu nor taoism was accepted there.
