Depths of Betrayal

DoraWhat's that? You built a super-powered sentient mechanical monstrosity with no weak points? I just don't know what went wrong. In Artogon Games' hidden-object adventure Depths of Betrayal, you receive a letter from your old friend and professional bad-idea-maker Professor Morgan, who wants your help in his experiments to create "perfect artificial intelligence". You arrive at the train station just in time to see the very train you were supposed to board crash rather spectacularly, and an enormous metal construct carrying off an unconscious man. Things get even grimmer when you discover a familiar photograph with a number of faces crossed out left at the scene. Will you be able to stop the beast before it's too late? Is your friend still alive? And really, when has building unstoppable mechanical giants with wills of their own ever been a good idea?!

Depths of BetrayalDepths of Betrayal is at its core hidden-object game, but approaches the gameplay in a markedly different fashion from most other titles. Each area will have a number of places that, when clicked, will pop up with a radial menu of items you'll need to find nearby. Objects in the menu with a red outline are items that need to be "created" somehow, such as by combining a stamp with an envelope or Garfield with lasagna. Track down each object, plunk them in the menu, and bask in the glow of accomplishing a simple task with a random assortment of completely unrelated items! The cursor changes to show interactive areas, things to look at, and people to talk to as you move it around. A good chunk of the puzzles you'll encounter will show up as sneakily locked box mechanisms in your inventory, marked by a decorative border; just click on them to get a close-up view to tinker.

Analysis: With big animated cutscenes, quality voice acting, and a heavy emphasis on its steampunk-ish plot, Depths of Betrayal is a remarkably cinematic game. It's a refreshing change from games that make you feel like you're just clicking through a series of static images... which, well, you are, basically, but they could still put a little effort into trying to get you engrossed. While the first area you'll encounter is relatively bland, the further you go the more the game opens up with some absolutely stunning and dynamic environments. It really is one of those games that grabs you more as you play, sprinkling bits of secrets and plot developments around just when you think you know exactly what's going on to make you go hmmmmm. You'll traipse all over a suspicious city, a suspicious jail, even a suspicious castle owned by a suspicious alchemist... suspiciously! It's all a surprising amount of fun, and feels like the sort of thing that would have been great as a movie starring Robert Downey Jr, Willem Dafoe, and... Jack Black as the mechanical giant. Look, shut up alright, Jack Black is awesome.

Depths of BetrayalThe lack of more traditional hidden-object hunting makes this one feel strange at first, but what it actually means is the game feels, as a whole, less restrictive even though it's just as linear as any other title. Of course, at the same time it can be intensely frustrating to be staring at an object you should be able to just pick up, but can't until you've gathered a bunch of arbitrary, unrelated things. It's still weird to use a cookie, a pumpkin, and a bunch of nails to be granted access to looking in a basket, but it beats staring at a stagnant messy scene with a list for a long time. Because of this, Depths of Betrayal actually winds up feeling like an adventure game, though it does take a while to get rolling.On the downside, none of the actual gameplay feels particularly unique. The puzzles will likely be pretty familiar to you, and while the carefully structured play and helpful hint/skip buttons mean you won't ever get stuck, there also isn't much of a challenge to speak of. However, It's a fantastic choice for people who want to go on a big, adventurous mystery with a geriatric protagonist who spends all day thinking up complicated, humorous ways to express his shock in the most elaborate manner possible.

At around four hours or so, it isn't the longest game on the market, and the gameplay, while refreshingly different from other hidden-object games, might also be a bit too different for die-hard fans of the original item list scavenger hunt style. But if you give it a chance to flex its mechanical muscles, Depth of Betrayal is a surprisingly engrossing story-based adventure that's well worth checking out. Give the demo a try and see if you prefer to wait for the Standard Edition, which isn't yet available at the time of this writing, but just remember; the last thing a world needs is another hyper-intelligent super robot running around. Seriously, I think Sarah McLachlan just did another commercial about them shot to sad guitar music. Stop building them.

Depths of Betrayal: Collector's Edition

Basic Gameplay

  • Your inventory list is at the bottom of your screen.

  • The hint button is at the bottom right of the screen.

  • To the bottom left of your screen is your journal with helpful clues if you get stuck.

  • The strategy guide is in the top left corner of your screen.

  • The menu button is in the top right corner of your screen.

  • Hidden object scenes include an entire room and not one specific spot on the screen.

  • In a scene you must find all objects before you receive the key object.

  • A wheel will appear when you first pick up an object in a scene and you will have to place each item in their appropriate circle until you obtain the key object

  • There will be some items in your inventory that you must combine before being able to use.

  • There are two difficulty levels:

    1. Casual-The hint button and skip option both recharge quickly.

    2. Advanced-The hint button and skip option recharge much slower and other hints found through the game are less frequent.

  • From the start menu you have the option to turn off both the music and the sound.

  • Also from the start menu you can change to have a custom cursor, look at the credits, and change between widescreen and full screen.

  • Extra Play becomes available upon completion of the game.

  • The cursor will change when you hover over specific spots.

  • Gears will appear if you hover over an area where an item needs to be used.

  • The cursor will change into an eyeball when you can investigate a spot more closely.

  • The cursor will become a grabbing hand if you can pick something up.

  • Items that are italicized are either in your inventory or will be added to your inventory.

  • Items that are written in bold are to be added to an object ring.

Chapter One

Entering the Train Depot

  • After the opening scene plays, click on the letter in your hand to start the game.

  • Pick up the tennis racket.

  • Pick up the gasoline can that's on the floor to the right of the barrels.

  • Investigate the podium to the right of the staircase.

  • Pick up the switch that's on the right corner of the machine.

  • Investigate the closed ticket window.

  • Pick up the index plate card between the metal sheet.

  • Add the index plate card to the 6 on the metal canister.

  • Pick up the now completed index plate card.

  • Grab the headlight from the cart on the bottom left of the screen with all the signs in it.

  • Upon completion, the door will open and a train accident will occur!

  • Pick up the black bag.

  • Pick up the valve that's atop the metal canisters.

  • Pick up the metal can.

  • Grab the metal flower that's under the metal canisters.

  • Pick up the spindle from underneath the bench on the right.

  • Investigate the clock and grab the 5.

  • Head inside the train depot.

Getting Into the Passenger Car

  • Pick up the photo dropped by the robot.

  • Grab the swan.

  • Pick up the bucket.

  • Investigate the ripped metal on the train under the Two sign.

  • Pick up the feather.

  • Investigate the torn rooftop of the train.

  • Pick up the metal piece.

  • Grab the wrench.

  • Grab the fan blade.

  • Pick up the ribbon.

  • Click on the 5 in your inventory and add it to the empty plaque on the train.

  • Pick up the plaque.

  • Investigate the newly revealed luggage hatch.

  • Pick up the switch.

  • Pick up the part of a sign.

Getting the Golden Key

  • Pick up the teddy bear, comb, and wheel stick.

  • Grab the letter on table.

  • Click on the far left seat cushion to lift it up and investigate it.

  • Grab the pipe.

  • Pick up the chest.

  • Go back twice to the first platform, then head left towards the post office.

  • Pick up the watering can

  • Pick up the train sign above the destroyed vending machine.

  • Pick up the stovetop piece.

  • Grab the pedestrian sign.

  • Pick up the film reel.

  • You receive a handle.

  • Place the pipe along the piping to the speaker box where you grabbed the bee.

  • Pull the handle.

  • Investigate the trash can.

  • Pick up the switch.

  • Click on the chest from your inventory.

    1. Rotate the switch on the far left first until it's in the proper spot.

    2. Rotate the switch on the far right second until it's in the proper spot.

Getting the Ladder

  • Enter the engine room at the top right of the screen.

  • Pick up the mug.

  • Grab the canteen pack.

  • Attach the part of a sign to the sign.

  • Pick up the sign.

  • Grab the pipe piece.

  • You obtain the T-key.

  • Investigate the TV screen and pick up the bow-tie.

  • Go back twice to the first platform of the train station.

  • Attach the bow-tie to the shirt.

Getting the Cane

  • Put the handle on the grate.

  • Pick up the punch card and the valve.

  • Go right.

  • Use the ladder underneath the speakers and pick them up.

  • Investigate the open fountain and pick up the valve.

  • Go into the passenger car.

  • Use the golden key to unlock the light.

  • Grab the torn photo.

  • Click on the T-key and click on the locked drawer.

  • Pick up the coins.

  • Return to the outside of the train station.

  • Invesitgate the nut vending machine.

  • Press the button to obtain nuts.

  • Investigate the open grate and grab the watch cover.

  • Investigate the ticket window and use the punch card: You receive a ticket.

  • Go forward once, then left to the Post Office.

  • Investigate the picture frame and place the torn photo on it.

  • Investigate the purse and pick up the scissors.

  • Go right twice, then forward into the passenger car.

  • Use the scissors to cut the rope.

  • Put the watch cover on the watch.

  • You receive a cane.

Reaching the Next Chapter

  • Leave the passenger car.

  • Investigate the baseball mitt on the floor.

  • Use the cane to get the baseball.

  • Place the baseball in the object ring, and you will receive a lure.

  • The lure and the rope will combine to make a lure with rope.

  • Go down once and to the left to the Post Office.

  • Investigate the broken window to the far right and use the lure with rope to pick up the silver key.

  • Go back once and to the right to the platform, then use the silver key on the locked box.

  • You receive a holder.

  • Go into the passanger car.

  • Place the holder on the empty holder spot of the second seat.

  • Click the seat to lift it up, then investigate.

  • You will obtain a third valve.

  • Return once more to the engine room.

  • Place the three valves in the missing spots, then turn each appropriately.

  1. Turn the first valve once.

  2. Turn the second valve once.

  3. Turn the third valve twice.

Chapter Two

Getting the Stickers

  • Investigate the notice board and pick up the paintbrush, then read the notices.

  • Investigate the bench and pick up the rose.

  • Grab the burlap sack.

  • Grab the puzzle box.

Getting the Wings

  • Place the shade on the lamp.

  • Pick up the salamander.

  • Investigate the open post box and grab the puzzle piece.

  • Place the dog's head on the dog body.

  • Pick up the dog body, then investigate the newly opened window.

Getting into the Living Room

  • Go to the right into the courtyard of the cobbler's square.

  • Investigate the glass jar and use the tweezers to pull out the cookie.

  • Investigate the basket and place the cookie piece back on the broken cookie.

  • Pick up the fixed cookie.

  • Investigate the open chest and pick up the hammer.

  • Go back once to the alley, then forward to the back gate.

  • Investigate the smaller doorway and use the key to unlock it.

  • Go forward into the storage room.

  • Investigate the valves underneath the lights on the left, right, and middle and click on them to turn on the lights.

  • Grab the pinecone.

  • Pick up the horseshoe.

  • Pick up the paddle.

  • Grab the oil can.

  • Pull the nail out with the hammer and receive the nail.

  • Pick up the bag.

  • Grab the torch.

  • Place the wings on the statue, then pick it up.

  • Investigate the now-open nail box and pick up the nails.

  • The nails will combine with the handle to become a handle with nails.

  • Go back once and place the handle with nails on the main door.

  • Use your hammer to pound in the nails.

  • Enter the living room.

Getting the Epaulette

  • Grab the harp.

  • Pick up the fan.

  • Pick up the level.

  • Grab the toy horse.

  • Grab the mannequin.

  • Investigate the machine to the right that has a spinning top and collect the puzzle piece.

  • Investigate the top of the chest and pick up the mask.

  • Investigate the now-open drawer and grab the papers and the sails.

  • Open the puzzle box in your inventory and place both puzzle pieces inside it, then solve the puzzle.

  • Go back three times, then go left to the gates.

  • Place the sails on the boat, then pick up the sailboat.

  • Go back once, then go right into the alley.

Getting to the Next Chapter

  • Leave the alleyway and head to the storage room.

  • Place the epaulettes on the jacket, then pick it up.

  • You obtain the lion's head.

  • Go back once and head into the living room.

  • Place the lion's head on the shield.

  • Investigate the now-open drawer and pick up the darts.

  • Use the pole hook on the ceiling door to the top right.

  • Go upstairs.

  • Pick up the metronome.

  • Pick up the traffic cone.

  • Pick up the wooden object.

  • Grab the teddy bear.

  • Click on the dagger.

  • Place the darts on the dart board and pick it up.

  • Place the die next to the other one, then pick up the dice.

Chapter Three

Getting to the Hallway

  • Investigate the pot above the sink and pick up the feather.

  • Investigate the sink and pick up the spoon.

  • Pick up the skull.

  • Grab the toy soldier.

  • Pick up the card.

  • You receive a plate.

Getting to the Rooftop

  • Close the door of the jail cell.

  • Investigate the cupboard and pick up the balloon, then the barrel.

  • Investigate the cabinet on the wall and use the key to open it up.

  • Take the puzzle and the gear.

  • Go back once to return to the second jail cell.

  • Investigate the pipe by the bunk and place the gear in its spot.

  • Lift up the bunk, then investigate the chair to pick up the scoop.

  • Investigate the bottom of the bunk to see the symbols there.

  • Investigate the wall to the top left to grab the wire, then pick up the exposed barrel.

  • Leave the room and go to the guard room once more.

  • Investigate the cabinet and place the cutter on the stick to make a pizza cutter, then pick it up.

  • Investigate the window on the door and use the wire to lift the latch.

  • Go into the elevator room.

Getting the Tumbler

  • Pick up the flashlight.

  • Pick up the broom.

  • Investigate the first door to the right of the elevator.

  • The password is 7-1-4-8.

  • A second puzzle will appear. You must light up every box.

  • Once done, grab the barrel.

  • Investigate the door to the far right of the puzzle cabinet.

  • Use the screwdriver on the screen to open it up.

  • Use the scoop and pick up the coal.

  • Place the hook on the pulley and pick it up.

  • Grab the oil can.

  • Pick up the flower.

  • Investigate the now-open cabinet and pick up the headlamp.

  • Open the puzzle box and place all four barrels inside it to start the puzzle.

  • You can move the barrels left, right, or spin them when they're in the red circle.

Getting into the Secret Room

  • Place the spin handle in the crank at the top of the bed.

  • Click on the box nearest the star in your inventory, then place the star on it.

  • Grab the bird head, then place it on the bed frame that has nothing on it.

  • Click on the bird heads to turn them.

  1. Turn the back left bird head so it's facing right.

  2. Turn the back right bird head so it's facing left.

  3. Turn the front left bird head so that it's facing backwards toward the wall with the painting on it.

  4. Turn the front right bird head so that it's facing forward.

  1. Swap the blue and red tiles.

  • Open the drawer with the boxing glove and add your boxing glove. Pick up the boxing gloves.

  • You receive tongs.

  • Go back up the city elevator to the hangar entrance.

  • Place the ladder on the shed and grab the skull.

  • You receive the card.

Taking the Airship

  • Go up and into the lounge. Open the bottom part of the cabinet and add the card to the cards, then pick them up.

  • Investigate the open hatch and pick up the vermilion.

  • Go back to the alley, then head left until you're in the furnace.

  • Click on the furnace, then click the right lever to open it.

  • Place the crucible inside, followed by the vermilion.

  • Use the right handle once more to close the lid, then use the left handle to start the fire.

  • Open the door one last time and use the tongs to pull out the hot mercury.

  • Leave the furnace and go to the back gate.

  • Investigate the barrel and place the hot mercury in the water, and you will receive cold mercury.

  • Go up to the secret room and investigate the thermometer.

  • Place the flask in the thermometer, then add the cold mercury to the thermometer; you will obtain a disc.

  • Go back downstairs to the living room and investigate the machine that has the spinning disc.

  • Place the discs on the machine to get a code.

  • Leave and go up to the hangar.

  • Investigate the screen with the map on it and enter the code.

Getting the Can Opener

  • Pick up the hanger.

  • Pick up the ball and chain.

  • Pick up the broom.

  • Pick up the giraffe.

  • Pick up the parchment on the bottom shelf of the cabinet.

  • Investigate the desk and pick up the valve.

  • Investigate the bottom of the cabinet and pick up the rolled up scroll and the globe.

  • Investigate the middle drawers of the cabinet and pick up the parchment and the solution.

  • Pick up the machine.

  • You receive weights.

Reaching the Other Side of the Castle

  • Go to the chemical hall and open the box in your inventory.

  • Place the figurine on the scale, then add the weights to the scale as well.

  • You want the weights to add up to eighteen, so use any variation to total up to that amount.

  • Investigate the cabinet and change the dial to eighteen.

  • Pick up the valve.

  • Go back and head down the elevator to the vault.

  • Investigate the cabinet with the pipes and place the valves in the correct places.

  • Go back to the outside of the castle.

  • Investigate the door and use the punch card, then pick up the torn page.

  • Go to the chemical hall and investigate the book on the desk, then put the torn page inside.

  • Once it opens, move the metal contraption four times for each circle and make each one match the proper circles. To make sure it stays press the button under the circle and do it in the correct sequence.

Depths of Betrayal: Collector's Edition

Basic Gameplay

  • Your inventory list is at the bottom of your screen.

  • The hint button is at the bottom right of the screen.

  • To the bottom left of your screen is your journal with helpful clues if you get stuck.

  • The strategy guide is in the top left corner of your screen.

  • The menu button is in the top right corner of your screen.

  • Hidden object scenes include an entire room and not one specific spot on the screen.

  • In a scene you must find all objects before you receive the key object.

  • A wheel will appear when you first pick up an object in a scene and you will have to place each item in their appropriate circle until you obtain the key object

  • There will be some items in your inventory that you must combine before being able to use.

  • There are two difficulty levels:

    1. Casual-The hint button and skip option both recharge quickly.

    2. Advanced-The hint button and skip option recharge much slower and other hints found through the game are less frequent.

  • From the start menu you have the option to turn off both the music and the sound.

  • Also from the start menu you can change to have a custom cursor, look at the credits, and change between widescreen and full screen.

  • Extra Play becomes available upon completion of the game.

  • The cursor will change when you hover over specific spots.

  • Gears will appear if you hover over an area where an item needs to be used.

  • The cursor will change into an eyeball when you can investigate a spot more closely.

  • The cursor will become a grabbing hand if you can pick something up.

  • Items that are italicized are either in your inventory or will be added to your inventory.

  • Items that are written in bold are to be added to an object ring.

Chapter One

Entering the Train Depot

  • After the opening scene plays, click on the letter in your hand to start the game.

  • Pick up the tennis racket.

  • Pick up the gasoline can that's on the floor to the right of the barrels.

  • Investigate the podium to the right of the staircase.

  • Pick up the switch that's on the right corner of the machine.

  • Investigate the closed ticket window.

  • Pick up the index plate card between the metal sheet.

  • Add the index plate card to the 6 on the metal canister.

  • Pick up the now completed index plate card.

  • Grab the headlight from the cart on the bottom left of the screen with all the signs in it.

  • Upon completion, the door will open and a train accident will occur!

  • Pick up the black bag.

  • Investigate the broken window to the far right and use the lure with rope to pick up the silver key.

  • Go back once and to the right to the platform, then use the silver key on the locked box.

  • You receive a holder.

  • Go into the passanger car.

  • Place the holder on the empty holder spot of the second seat.

  • Click the seat to lift it up, then investigate.

  • You will obtain a third valve.

  • Return once more to the engine room.

  • Place the three valves in the missing spots, then turn each appropriately.

Getting the Tumbler

  • Pick up the flashlight.

  • Pick up the broom.

  • Investigate the first door to the right of the elevator.

  • The password is 7-1-4-8.

  • A second puzzle will appear. You must light up every box.

  • Place the spin handle in the crank at the top of the bed.

  • Pick up the hexagon and the star.

  • Click on the box nearest the star in your inventory, then place the star on it.

  • Grab the bird head, then place it on the bed frame that has nothing on it.

  • Click on the bird heads to turn them.

  1. Turn the back left bird head so it's facing right.

  2. Turn the back right bird head so it's facing left.

  3. Turn the front left bird head so that it's facing backwards toward the wall with the painting on it.

  4. Turn the front right bird head so that it's facing forward.

  • Investigate the top part of the cabinet and pick up the cross.

  • Investigate the broken bucket and attach the pipes to the pan pipe and pick it up.

  • Go to the secret room.

  • Open the drawer with the boxing glove and add your boxing glove. Pick up the boxing gloves.

  • You receive tongs.

  • Go back up the city elevator to the hangar entrance.

  • Place the ladder on the shed and grab the skull.

  • You receive the card.

Taking the Airship

  • Go up and into the lounge. Open the bottom part of the cabinet and add the card to the cards, then pick them up.

  • Investigate the open hatch and pick up the vermilion.

  • Go back to the alley, then head left until you're in the furnace.

  • Click on the furnace, then click the right lever to open it.

  • Place the crucible inside, followed by the vermilion.

  • Use the right handle once more to close the lid, then use the left handle to start the fire.

  • Open the door one last time and use the tongs to pull out the hot mercury.

  • Leave the furnace and go to the back gate.

  • Investigate the barrel and place the hot mercury in the water, and you will receive cold mercury.

  • Go up to the secret room and investigate the thermometer.

  • Place the flask in the thermometer, then add the cold mercury to the thermometer; you will obtain a disc.

  • Go back downstairs to the living room and investigate the machine that has the spinning disc.

  • Place the discs on the machine to get a code.

  • Leave and go up to the hangar.

  • Investigate the screen with the map on it and enter the code.

  • The code is E 06

  • You receive a punch card.

  • Investigate the dirigible and use the punch card on the ticket machine.

Getting the Can Opener

  • Pick up the hanger.

  • Pick up the ball and chain.

  • Pick up the trumpet.

  • Investigate the front door, pick up the reel, and read the note.

  • Grab the waterskin.

  • Investigate the cardboard box and pick up the stencil.

  • Use your can opener on the paint can, then pick it up.

  • You receive the empty tank.

Getting the Knife

  • Place the valve and empty tank on the metal canister.

  • Click on the valve to rotate it and receive a full tank.

  • Go back once to the castle entrance, then go forward to the elevator.

  • Place the full tank to the right of the other tank on the wall.

  • Click on the red button and take the elevator down.

  • Pick up the broom.

  • Pick up the giraffe.

  • Pick up the parchment on the bottom shelf of the cabinet.

  • Investigate the desk and pick up the valve.

  • Investigate the bottom of the cabinet and pick up the rolled up scroll and the globe.

  • Investigate the middle drawers of the cabinet and pick up the parchment and the solution.

  • Pick up the machine.

  • You receive weights.

  • Go back up the elevator.

  • Put the solution in the basket.

  • You receive a knife.

Reaching the Other Side of the Castle

  • Go to the chemical hall and open the box in your inventory.

  • Place the figurine on the scale, then add the weights to the scale as well.

  • You want the weights to add up to eighteen, so use any variation to total up to that amount.

  • Investigate the cabinet and change the dial to eighteen.

  • Pick up the valve.

  • Go back and head down the elevator to the vault.

  • Investigate the cabinet with the pipes and place the valves in the correct places.

  • Investigate the now-open vault and pick up the golem kill switch and the punch card.

  • Go back to the outside of the castle.

  • Investigate the door and use the punch card, then pick up the torn page.

  • Go to the chemical hall and investigate the book on the desk, then put the torn page inside.

  • Go outside once and investigate the door to the right, then use the knife to cut the rope.

  • Once it opens, move the metal contraption four times for each circle and make each one match the proper circles. To make sure it stays press the button under the circle and do it in the correct sequence.

Getting the Second Punch Card

  • Pick up the pocket knife.

  • Investigate the pail and pick up the bottle.

  • Speak with the cobbler to receive the punch card.

  • Go back once and move forward towards the fountain.

  • Pick up the fan.

  • Grab the skull.

  • Pick up the gloves.

  • Grab the brooch.

  • Pick up the compass.

  • Investigate the grate and pick up the punch card.

  • Grab the urn.

  • Pick up the mirror holder.

  • Investigate the fireplace and pick up the note.

  • Investigate the drawing desk and pick up the note.

  • Grab the hourglass.

  • Go down to the town square, then through the left gate to the citadel entrance.

  • Investigate the door and place the tubes on it.

  1. From the top tube sockets: Place the purple tube in the first one.

  2. Place the blue in the second.

  3. Place the green in the third and fifth.

  4. Put the yellow in the fourth.

  5. Put the red in the sixth.

  • Investigate the open window and place the wax on the envelope, use the seal on it, and pick up the enevelope.

  • You receive the soap and pick up the barrel.

Getting into the Sewer

  • Go to the study, investigate the desk, place the beetle on the frame, then pick it up.

  • Open the music box and place all the barrels inside.

  • Open the wooden door and pick up the metal box, then pull the lever.

  • Use the screwdriver on each screw.

  • Place the full jar in the vent.

  • Investigate the robot and use the screwdriver on the hook to obtain it.

  • Go to the cell and investigate the grate.

  • Use the hook to pick up the punch card.

  • Go back to the ventilation room and use the punch card on the lock.

  • Go forward into the tower study.

Getting into the Observatory

  • Pick up the dagger.

  • Investigate the lamp in the middle of the table and pick up the tile.

Unfortunately I can't even go beyond Getting the Golden Key as I am not able to pick up the button. Very frustrating as I do not understand why that would be the case. I have restarted the game and stop at the same early stage section.
