Escape from Santa's Room
Christmas day is almost over now. The presents have been opened, dinner has been eaten, football has been watched, trash has been taken out, and naps have been taken. Now for the downside of the holiday, what to do next? There's nothing on TV, so that's out. You could go see a movie, but it will be crowded and noisy with all of the other folks (and their kids) who had the same idea. So what can you do to keep the spirit of the day alive for a little while longer? Why, play a new Christmas-themed escape the room game, of course! Welcome to Escape from Santa's Room by Tesshi-e, a late in the day escape for folks looking for something to do after the festivities.
The setup is another Tesshi-e classic: you're waiting in a bar for your friend (that looks like the bar from Escape from the Small Bar, doesn't it?) when you fall asleep. In your dreams Santa appears (as he often does) and lets you know that he needs you to save Christmas. Out of curiosity, why does Christmas constantly need saving, anyway? You'd think from these games and numerous TV specials that Christmas is constantly one heartbeat away from never happening. Considering its effect on the retail market and how vital it is to the economy, I really can't see that happening, can you?
Escape from Santa's Room is pretty standard Tesshi-e fare. Nice three dimensional space? Check. Puzzles involving moving pictures and dolls? Check. Rather familiar music? Check. Lack of a changing cursor? Check. Happy coin alternate escape? Check already! Seriously brutal math puzzle that will have you pulling your hair out? Okay, that one is fairly uncommon in the Tesshi-e oeuvre. Fortunately the excellent English translations are still around to guide you on your way.
The recycling of so many familiar puzzles (especially the picture puzzle) makes this sort of "Tesshi-e: The Greatest Hits". Yet, despite the familiarity and the feeling that this was a rush job to make the holiday (the game itself only hit on Christmas Eve), there's lots to enjoy about Escape from Santa's Room. Familiar puzzles or no, Tesshi-e always provides an amusing and intriguing escape experience, with puzzles that flow from one to another with logical procession, making for an organized yet not too easy escape.
So sit back, relax, and enjoy Escape from Santa's Room. And while it may not be Tesshi-e's best, it sure hits all the right notes for room escaping fun, and may help a little with the post-Christmas blues that tend to settle in around 7 pm or so, depending on when dinner was served. Cheer up, and join the escape!

Exploration (Ground Floor)
You begin facing a wall with a door, and a loft overhead.
Click on the door for a close up. Yep, it's locked.
Back up to the long view, then click on the picture to the right of the door that has three wreaths on it.
In close up you will see that there are three buttons underneath the wreaths.
Back up, then click on the tall cabinet on the right side of the wall for a close up.
Click on the top (glass doored) cabinets to open them.
On the top shelf is a coffee set which you can't do anything with.
On the bottom shelf are three boxes. If you click on the box on the far right it will move to the right and you will see part of a clue and some arrows.
Click on the middle box to move it to the right and you will see the rest of the clue and more arrows.
The clue is "birds" with arrows pointing (from left to right): upper left, lower right, lower right, upper right, lower left, upper right.
Click on the left box to move it to the right and you've found a green star. Take it.
Back up once.
If you examine the drawers on the bottom of the cabinet you will see that the left drawer needs a three digit code, the right drawer needs a key, and the bottom cabinet doors need a screwdriver.
Back up and turn right.
You are now looking at the room at an angle. In front of the cabinet you can see some sort of white machine on a table in front of the windows. Click on it for a close up.
The object is a humidifier, but pushing the button doesn't do anything. If you click to the left of the humidifier while in close up you'll see that it is missing an electrical cord.
Back up twice to the corner view then turn right.
You are now facing a wall with a long low cabinet below two windows. The front of the cabinet is made up of five panels, each with a different colored Christmas tree.
Click on the cabinet for a close up.
On the cabinet, from left to right, is an orange tree, a pink tree, a yellow tree, a green tree, and a blue tree.
On top of the cabinet is a small device, click on it for a close up.
This device needs a five letter code, and it obviously needs something put on it as well.
Back up twice to the long view of the wall.
On the left, hanging from a rafter, is a plant. Click on the plant for a close up.
There's obviously something on top of the rafter, but you can't reach it.
Back up and turn right.
You are now facing a fireplace and a chest to the left of the fireplace.
The chest is locked and you don't have a key yet.
Click on the mantle of the fireplace for a close up.
There are several things of interest on the mantle. There's a miniature rocking chair and four pictures standing on the mantle.
Three of the pictures are pretty but unimportant. One of the pictures (third from the left) is a picture of the three wreaths on the door wall. Click on that picture to pick it up.
Once the picture is in close up, click on it again to turn it around.
On the back of the picture is a 3 x 6 grid with certain sections blacked out, and an arrow pointing downwards.
On the grid, in each row from top to bottom, the blacked out squares are 3, 1, 2, 2, 1, and 1.
Put down the picture and back up. Turn right.
Now you can see a large Christmas tree. There is a painting to the right of the tree, and to the left of the tree (about halfway up) there is some white lettering on one of the bricks.
Click on the base of the tree for a close up.
Looks like you need a four digit code. Back up.
Click on the white lettering on the brick to the left for a close up.
There are four numbers here, 8456, and an arrow pointing to the right and downwards.
Back up and click on the painting to the right of the tree for a close up.
Looks like you need to find a lever. Back up.
Turn right and you are back facing the door again. Time to solve some puzzles!
The Christmas Tree Puzzle
If you are facing the door, turn left.
Click on the base of the tree for a close up.
Enter the four digit code you found on the wall to the left of the tree.
8456.
When you enter the proper code a panel will open, revealing a screwdriver and XXX.
Take the screwdriver and back up.
The Lower Cabinet
Turn right to face the door.
Click on the large cabinet in the right corner for a close up.
Click on the lower cabinet doors for a close up.
Use the screwdriver on the panel on the left door.
This reveals a three digit code using Roman Numerals.
Use the hint you found at the Christmas Tree Base.
Enter X X X.
Once you enter the three digit code click on the doors to open them.
Take the pot that is in the cabinet.
Once the pot is in close up, you will notice an object inside. Take the object (electrical cord).
Back up twice.
The Humidifier (part 1)
Click on the humidifier for a close up.
Click to the left of the humidifier to see the electrical socket.
Use the electrical cord on the humidifier and back up once.
Click on the top left panel of the humidifier to open it. Inside is a key (spade key), take it.
Back up twice.
The Right Drawer
Click on the large cabinet in the right corner for a close up.
Click on the right drawer in the bottom section for a close up.
Use the spade key on the drawer to open it and take the Santa doll.
Back up twice.
The Christmas Tree Cabinet
Turn right until you are facing the wall with the low cabinet decorated by colorful Christmas trees.
Click on the cabinet for a close up, then click on the device on top of the cabinet for a close up.
Place the Santa doll in the device.
Now you need to come up with the five letter code.
The code is pretty obvious. Look at the doll, does it suggest a five letter word?
The code is Santa.
Once you enter the code, back up once.
The whole front of the cabinet opened, revealing a ladder. Take the ladder.
Back up.
Exploration (The Loft)
Turn left twice to face the door.
Place the ladder to the right, in front of the large cabinet (click on the loft to place).
Click on the ladder to go up to the loft.
There's lots to see up here.
On the right is a small red freezer. In front of the freezer is a paper, take it (newspaper).
Click on the freezer for a close up.
Looks like you need a four digit code to open it.
Click on the left of the freezer to see the side.
This is an important clue, Hint 1. 1st = 0, answer = 8th, 5th = 120, and 9th = 9840.
Back up twice.
To the left of the freezer is a bed. On the floor tucked into the side of the bed is a stick, take it.
Above the bed is a picture. Click on the picture for a close up.
Looks like a picture of birds. Back up.
To the left of the bed is a chest, click on the chest for a close up.
Looks like we need another four digit code. This chest has a large green heart, with a smaller green heart above and to the right of it. That looks familiar somehow...
Back up.
Removing the Loft Picture
Click on the picture for a close up.
The picture is of birds.
Where have you seen a clue that says birds?
Remember the clue in the upper cabinet, hidden by the boxes?
The clue said "birds", and had six arrows pointing in different directions.
To remove the painting you have to click on the corners of the painting in the order and direction of the arrows.
Click on the corners in this order: Upper left, lower right, lower right, upper right, lower left, upper right.
If you clicked correctly, the painting will fall down, revealing a pink star. Take the star.
Click on the top of the painting frame for a close up.
It says Hint 2= x3 + 3.
Back up twice to the long view of the loft.
Opening the Red Freezer
Click on the red freezer for a close up.
There are two clues for this code, Hint 1 and Hint 2
Hint 1 tells you that 1st = 0, answer = 8th, 5th = 120, and 9th = 9840.
Hint 2 tells you x3 + 3.
Start from the hint that 1st = 0.
You take the answer from the previous number, and plug it into the equation x3 + 3.
So 2nd would be 0 x 3 + 3 = 3.
Now take the answer from 2nd and plug it in again.
3rd would be 3 x 3 + 3 = 12.
Continuing on you would get the following answers:
1st = 0.
2nd = 3.
3rd = 12.
4th = 39.
5th = 120.
6th = 363.
7th = 1092.
8th = 3279.
9th = 9840.
Hint 1 tells you that 5th and 9th are correct, and that the answer is 8th.
Therefore the code is 3279.
Enter the code and click on the door to open it.
Take the block of ice and back up.
Getting the Yellow Star
Back up from the loft and turn right twice.
Click on the hanging plant for a close up.
Use the stick from your inventory on the small object on the rafter to get the yellow star.
The Wreath Puzzle/The Left Drawer
Turn left twice to face the door.
Click on the wreaths for a close up.
Remember the buttons underneath the wreaths?
Remember the grid on the back of the wreath picture on the mantle?
The rows, from top to bottom, indicate which button to push and in which order.
The order (from left to right) is 3rd, 1st, 2nd, 2nd, 1st, and 1st.
When you push the buttons in the correct order, numbers will appear on the wreaths.
This three digit number is the code for the left drawer on the large cabinet.
Back up and click on the left drawer of the large cabinet for a close up.
Use the code (728) on the drawer to open it.
Take the matches and the club key.
Close the drawer and back up twice.
Lighting the Fire/Blue Star
Turn left twice to face the fireplace.
Click on the locked chest to the left of the fireplace for a close up.
Use the club key to open the chest.
Open the chest and take the firewood.
Back up.
Click on the fireplace for a close up.
Place the firewood in the fireplace.
Place the newspaper on the firewood.
Use the matches on the newspaper to light the fire.
Pull up the pot from your inventory for a close up.
Place the block of ice into the pot, then place the pot on the fire.
Back up and wander around the room for a few turns.
Turn back to the fireplace and click on it for a close up.
Click on the pot to take it.
While the pot is in close up take the blue star.
Close down the close up of the pot, back up, and turn right three times, until you are facing both the humidifier and the red couch.
The Humidifier (part 2)
Click on the humidifier for a close up.
Click on the upper left part of the humidifier to open the top reservoir.
Use the pot of water on the reservoir to fill it.
An object appears in the slot to the right, take it (lever).
Back up once and push the humidifier button (it should be red) to turn it on.
The humidifier will now show a message on the window, Merry Christmas.
Back up.
The Heart Chest
Turn left twice until you are facing the Christmas tree.
Click on the picture to the right of the tree for a close up.
Place the lever in the slot on the left and the lion's eyes will light up.
Back up and turn right twice.
Click on the humidifier for a close up.
Notice that there is now a green heart around the S in Christmas.
Doesn't that S look like a 5?
Back up and turn left.
Click on the ladder to go up to the loft.
Click on the heart chest for a close up.
Now you need the four digit code to open the chest.
Look closely at the heart symbols on the chest.
Does that configuration (a large object and a smaller object above and to the right) look familiar?
If it was a number, it would be a number to the nth power.
The green heart highlighted the S which looks like a 5 on the window.
5 to the 5th power is 3125 (5 x 5 x 5 x 5 x 5).
Enter the code into the chest and take the sack of presents.
The Stars
Back up from the loft until you are facing the door.
Pull up the sack of presents from your inventory and click on it to turn it around.
Take the orange star and turn left to face the Christmas tree.
Click on the lion painting for a close up.
Click on the lever to pull it down and it will reveal five slots for the stars.
Now you just need to figure out the order to put the stars in the slots.
Remember the low cabinet with the colored Christmas trees?
In the cabinet, the trees were colored (from left to right) orange, pink, yellow, green, and blue.
You need to place the stars in the same order.
For the colorblind: The stars in your inventory are in this order, top row, orange, green, and pink.
The stars in your inventory in the bottom row are (from left to right) blue and yellow.
When you place the stars correctly the lion's mouth will open, revealing a key (heart key).
Take the key and back up.
Regular End
Turn right to face the door.
Click on the door for a close up.
Use the heart key to unlock the door.
Click on the unlocked door to leave. Enjoy the lovely feast Santa has provided for you and your friend.
Happy Coin End
Use the heart key to unlock the door, but don't click on it to go through.
Back up and turn right twice to the cabinet with the Christmas trees.
Click on the cabinet for a close up, then click on the Santa doll to take it.
Back up once and turn right to the fireplace.
Click on the mantle for a close up.
Place the Santa doll in the rocking chair.
The picture hanging on the chimney will drop, revealing the happy coin.
Take the happy coin, back up, and turn right twice to face the door.
This time Santa will give you a necklace with a jeweled key which will open the door to happiness.
Happy Coin will bring happiness to you!
Merry Christmas!

WALKTHROUGH
We're in Santa's house? Wow! Obviously Santa likes escape games as much as we do, since he's built his house around one!
Ok, let's look around, and see if we can solve it.
The door is locked, obviously.
There's a set of three wreaths on the first wall, how pretty!
There's a button below each one, but they don't seem to do anything... maybe there's a code? We'll come back later.
There's a wooden cabinet next to the wreaths.
The top of the cabinet is unlocked.
Hmm, looks like we can't interact with the coffee set, but these boxes look interesting...
If you move the boxes, there's a code on the back wall, and a green star you can pick up.
The code is "birds", with arrows pointing up/left, down/right, down/right, up/right, down/left, up/right.
There are two drawers.
The drawer on the left needs a 3-digit code.
The drawer on the right needs a key.
There's also a set of doors.
We can't get in here either; there's a screwed-on panel stopping us from unlocking them.
There's also some kind of white box?
Oh, it's a humidifier. It doesn't seem to be working though, the button doesn't do anything.
Click to the left of the humidifier, and we see why - it's not plugged in!
Ok, let's look somewhere else. Turn left.
Ooh, look at that lion. Very well made. Is it supposed to do something though?
Oh, I see. There's a slot for a handle. Ok, we'll come back here if we find one.
That's a big tree!
What's on the pot?
Ah, another code. 4 digits this time.
Is there something written on the wall?
Ah yes, a 4-digit number: 8456, and an arrow pointing to the tree.
Shall we try this with the tree's pot?
Aha! A screwdriver, and the word "XXX".
Ok, that's everything we can do here, let's keep going.
A fireplace, of course. It gets cold at the North Pole!
Nothing in the fireplace, let's check on top.
There's a few candles, photos, drawings, and a tiny rocking chair.
One of those photos is familiar...
It's the wreaths on the other side of the room! Why would Santa have a photo like that?
Flip the photo over. It's a clue!
Going down, as the arrow indicates, the pattern is right, left, middle, middle, left, left.
Looks like we can't do anything else here.
There's also a locked box here. We don't have a key though... let's keep going.
Oh, that's a colourful table, isn't it!
Orange, pink, yellow, green and blue trees.
That seems important, make note of it.
And what's this on top?
It looks like there's a panel to input a code...
It's not working though. Looks like it needs something on top.
There's a hanging plant in the corner. I'm surprised it's surviving at the North Pole!
What's that on the beam?
Can't reach. Oh well, maybe we'll find something later.
You would think you could click on the couch, but you can't. Moving on.
Ok, that's about all we can see for now, time to get to work.
Let's check out those wreaths again.
Maybe if we tap that code from the fireplace on the buttons...
Aha, another code! 728. Ok.
Next up, let's try the cabinet.
We'll start at the bottom.
Unscrew the panel, and have a look underneath.
A code panel... using Roman numerals?
Ah! The "XXX" from the tree!
Yep, that did it. Grab the pot.
And there's a cord inside the pot. Make sure you get that too.
Ok, we still don't have a key... let's move on to the left drawer.
Three digits, huh?
728
Matches, and the Clover key.
Well, now that we have a key, let's open the other drawer!
Oh, maybe not. This key must go somewhere else...
Like the box next to the fireplace?
It fits! Pick up the firewood.
Ugh, logs are heavy, let's just drop them in the fireplace.
We can't start a fire though; we have matches, but we need some kindling as well.
Now that we have a power cord, let's get the humidifier running!
Click to the left of the humidifier, and plug it in.
Press the button.
Hmm, there's no water in here. But there is something in the bottom...
Ooh, shiny! It's the Spade key.
Is there something in that slot?
We can't reach it. Never mind.
Alright, *now* we can open that drawer.
What? A Santa doll? Doesn't he look jolly?
I wonder where Santa goes?
The little chair on top of the fireplace?
Nope. I guess Santa can't relax while there's still work to do!
What about the code panel on the table?
There we go, a perfect fit.
But what's the code? We haven't found any five letter codes...
Let's try the obvious first.
S-A-N-T-A
B-I-N-G-O! Back out, and grab the ladder.
Ok, we've got a ladder. Where can we use it?
Maybe we can get that thing above the plant?
No, I suppose there isn't enough room to put the ladder up here.
Where else can we put a ladder?
Oh, there's a loft above the door!
Well, let's get up there, shall we?
Ok, new area, let's take a look around. From the left, we have: a chest, a bed, a painting, a newspaper on the floor, and a bar fridge.
Chest first, let's see...
There's a four digit code panel.
And a pair of green hearts.
Bed next.
What's that on the floor?
Half covered by the blanket...
Oh, it's a stick! These always come in handy for reaching things...
Things like that object above the plant?
Yes! Now we have a yellow star to match the green one.
Huh, nothing else interesting about the bed.
Oh, it's a painting of a girl and some birds... That's nice.
Hold on, birds? That sounds familiar...
Yes, the code from the cabinet!
Maybe we should click the corners?
Up/left, down/right, down/right, up/right, down/left, up/right.
A pink star! That's three.
What's that on the frame? Writing?
Hint 2 -> x3+3
Maths? Obviously there's a hint one as well... What for though?
Pick up the newspaper.
Not very interesting though.
Let's check the fridge.
Another four digit code.
Click left.
Ah, there's hint 1! And it's a doozy. We've got some maths ahead, huh?
Ok, so there's a sequence of numbers. The 1st is "0", and we need the 8th.
We're given two more entries in the sequence: the 5th is 120, and the 9th is 9840.
How does the sequence go?
Well, obviously Hint 1 goes with Hint 2, so let's try Hint 2's formula.
In other words, for each new number, multiply the last number by 3, then add 3.
So: 0-3-12-39-120-363-1092-3279-9840
The 5th and 9th entries match, so the answer must be 3279!
Ok, let's try our new number here.
3-2-7-9
Voila! The blue star! Encased in ice. We'll have to get it out somehow...
Brrr, I'm getting cold carrying this ice around. Let's get the fire going.
Use the newspaper from the loft as kindling, and use the matches to start the fire.
Now we can use the heat of the fire to melt the ice!
We can't just put it on the fire though, the melted water would just put it out.
I know, let's put the ice in the pot from the cabinet.
Give it some time to melt...
Ie, turn away and turn back again. Wow, that was fast!
Alright, now we have the blue star, and a potful of water.
The fire dried out the room a bit, it's a little uncomfortable. Let's use this water in the humidifier.
Oh, that object has risen to the top now!
It's a lever. Alright.
Back out, and press the button again to turn on the humidifier.
Aww, that's nice, Merry Christmas to you too, Santa!
So, what's this lever for?
Oh, the lion!
Yep, that worked! The lion's eyes are glowing!
Hmm, they seem to be shining across the room...
...at the Merry Christmas message!
There's a green heart projected on the "S".
But with that typeface... it looks like...
A "5"? Interesting.
Where else have we seen a green heart?
Oh, upstairs, right. But let's not get ahead of ourselves, let's finish checking out the lion.
Throw... THE LEVER.
Five star-shaped holes. Well, we only have four stars, so let's come back when we have all five.
Ok, back to the loft.
Let's figure out the chest code.
So, we now know that the green heart means "5", so what do two hearts mean?
Oh, it's maths again, isn't it?
For those of you who don't know, a little number above and to the right means "to the power of", which means multiplying over and over again.
In this case, we have 5 to the power of 5, or 5^5. In other words, 5x5x5x5x5.
So, the code must be 3125.
Put that in, and we get Santa's Sack!
Is there something tacked to the back of the sack?
Yes, the orange star! That makes 5!
Downstairs, the lion awaits.
We've got stars in orange, green, pink, blue and yellow.
Where have we seen those colours before?
Oh, the trees on the table.
So, the right order must be orange-pink-yellow-green-blue.
Aha, the Heart key!
Does that mean we can get out now?
Yes!
Unless you want the happy coin first!
Is there anything we've forgotten?
Or anyone?
The Santa doll!
He must be getting tired by now!
Pick him up. If you can't, make sure you've opened the door a little, to activate the Happy Coin sequence.
Let's put him in his rocking chair on the fireplace.
Oh, it's the Happy Coin! You're welcome, Santa!
Let's get these presents to the real Santa!
Click the door to finish the game.

1st = 0
2nd = 0 x 3 + 3 = 3
3rd = 3 x 3 + 3 = 12
4th = 12 x 3 + 3 = 39
5th = 39 x 3 + 3 = 120 (hypothesis verified)
6th = 363
7th = 1092
8th = 3279 (the answer)
9th = 9840 (double check)
Take the icy blue star.
The fireplace and the icecube
First, the fire :
The goal here is to light a fire.
You need the wood from the brown box, the newspaper, and the match from the left drawer.
Put the wood in the fireplace, then the newspaper, and put it on fire.
And then the icecube :
The icecube is from the red fridge.
You also need the pot from the bottom cupboard.
Just put the icecube in the pot (about item) and then the pot on the fire.
After a short walk, you have a blue star and some water.
The humidifier (2)
"There's something there, but [you] can't get it ..."
What should go inside a humidifier ?
Some water ! (from the fireplace)
And it's "some kind of lever".
You also get a "Happy Christmas" on the window.
The wooden lion
"Looks like something'll fit here ..."
And what about a lever ? Or some kind of.
The thing from the humidifier.
The eyes are lit up, so what ?
Look where the laser go.
It makes a green heart on the 'S' on the window.
The heart box
You need a four digits number.
There are two hints :
The 'S' in the heart from the window and the hearts on the box.
These are mathematical hints.
The 'S' ...
... is a '5'.
And the two hearts ...
... shows the power operator.
So the answer is ...
5 power 5 = 5 x 5 x 5 x 5 x 5 = 3125
You now have the presents from Santa.
Getting out
The lion has swallowed the key for the door.
There is something behind the panel under his head.
The lever open it.
You should place the five stard in correct order.
Star locations :
Orange :
On the back of Santa's presents bag.
Green :
Behind the leftmost box in the top cupboard.
Pink :
Behind the painting on the second floor.
Blue :
In the icecube found in the red fridge on the second floor.
Yellow :
Above the relaxing plant, but you need a tool to reach it.
The stick next to Santa's bed.
Order :
The colors of the Christmas trees on the desk.
From left to right : orange, pink, yellow, green, blue.
And the heart key is in the lion's mouth.
Finally
Just open the door with the heart key and leave !
The happy coin !
You can only find it once the door is opened.
It has something to do with the Santa doll.
And the little rocking chair on the chimney.
Sit the doll on it.
The coin is behind the painting on the chimney.
Thank you grinnyp for the hints.
