Atmosphir

JohnBAfter an extensive beta period where the game moved from a download to a browser-based Unity experience, the 3D platform adventure game Atmosphir is open and ready for everyone! Fueled by user-created content, Atmosphir allows anyone to craft custom levels using a simple, thorough, and surprisingly fun editor.

AtmosphirThe goal of Atmosphir? Run around and have fun! Each level has its own set of objectives, story (if it has a story at all), enemies, landscape features, and so on. Maybe all you need to do is run to the other side of a platform before time runs out. Maybe you need to find a certain item, defeat some enemies, or reach the checkpoint flag. Maybe you'll take part in an epic journey that spans several chapters. The objectives are entirely up to the level designer, all you have to do is hop in and have a good time.

Items, enemies and equipment add a "game" feeling to Atmosphir, and if used correctly, they can make exploration all the more entertaining. Some common items include speed and jump boosters which increase your movement speed and jump height respectively or health items to keep you alive and kickin'. You'll also find more intriguing power-ups like the comet that allows you to fly for a short period of time. Combat is also a part of the experience, so be prepared to take some swings at enemies from time to time.

Creating your own content is just as much a part of Atmosphir as playing the game is. Using a simple point and click interface, you can place, move, color and shape your stage using everything you would normally see in the game. Raise and lower your build level to craft vertical stages, hollow out caves to create secret passageways, set level goals, music, time limits, power-ups, and so on. It's your canvas, and the more you play around with level design, the better your creations will become and the more the community will appreciate your work.

And there's multiplayer! Many levels feature either cooperative or competitive multiplayer modes, allowing you to hop in and play with random Atmosphir folks or some of your friends. You can either join existing sessions or create your own, the choice is yours.

AtmosphirAnalysis: The strength of Atmosphir is in its community, and even throughout the game's beta phases users weren't afraid to flex their imaginations. At the time of writing there are over 50,000 custom levels created by the players, ranging from simple one-trick stages to serious adventures to just-for-fun stages. There's no shortage of cool stuff to find, and you can filter levels by rating and difficulty to find something suitable for your mood.

Behind the scenes, Atmosphir is run on Atmos, an in-game currency used for purchasing clothes, weapons, masks, hairstyles, facial features, and other items to customize your avatar. Most of these are purely cosmetic, but several will alter your character's attack power/speed or allow you to defend yourself. Spending money is entirely optional for the game, and even if you never drop an atmo you still have access to all the levels, the editor, and character customization tools the game has to offer.

Update: Unfortunately, Atmosphir is no longer available to play.

The down side? There really isn't one. Aside from the occasional stink bomb of a level (the map designer's fault, not Atmosphir's), you'll find very few problems with the game. The occasional camera hiccup or a minor hit detection snafu are the only things you'll run into while playing, and that says a lot for a game that lets anyone create levels. Some days the servers are slower than others, creating awkward lag when you switch menu screens or try to change levels. Otherwise, your only limitation is your imagination.

Atmosphir is doing great things for community driven games and 3D browser-based platformers. It's come a long way since its initial inception, adding lots of nice features and upgrading itself with each iteration. With a strong player community and a creative, active development team, the experience is getting nothing but better as time passes!

Update: This game is no longer available. Previously tagged as: 3d, browser, community, creativity, free, game, leveleditor, mac, multiplayer, platform, rating-g, unity, windows

Finally! I was wondering when this would be reviewed!

@Avius
As an avid user of Atmosphir, I can tell you that it would take an absolutely terrible computer to not be able to run this. You should at least try it.

Long time player of this game and I have to say, if you've never heard of it, I suggest you sign up ASAP! This is an amazing game, and I have fun with it whether I'm designing, playing or even just interacting with the community via the forums or chat room.

The level designer is deceptively powerful. At first I thought it was all blocks, but you can rotate in an axis to any degree, scale to 50% to 200% (2000% on some blocks!), in combination to the huge amounts of floors, blocks, props and other items, the only limit really is your imagination! I've seen some things made by people that have seriously blown my mind.

The best part about this game is the fact that the developers are in constant contact with the community. This is one game where if you suggest an idea, there's a good chance it'll be read by someone who can implement it. The constant communication between the people who make the game and the players themselves really makes it feel like you're being heard, and that you're shaping a game that could well become the next biggest thing on the net.

Hope to see a lot more newcomers to the game! If you ever need help with anything, give me a shout. My username is Yanahma, and I'm part of the Editorial Staff (in charge of giving the 'Level of the Day' award, a highly sought after commendation of exemplary level design).

Registering after this.

Kind of looks similar to that MineCraft game posted on here a while back.

Something really sad has happened here... I created a character and everything, I can click on levels and the Game is Paused screen comes up. When I click play/resume, nothing happens. Does anyone else have this problem? I'm on a Mac.

Cruel world.

A good idea but dreadful controls make it unplayable. Cursor left and right should rotate the camera, not make the player move. Jumping should be possible by left-clicking. Having to keep switching between mouse and keyboard when moving is very slow and very annoying. Precise movements are impossible.

Also it needs a powerful computer and a fast Internet connection.

I agree, the controls are a bit awkward sometimes. I know you can change the keys but... I spent about 5 minutes trying to grab onto a ledge. Maybe that's just me.

Also, I've been waiting ages for this level to load... it seems to be stuck on 49%.

I'm sure I would love to play this game, but after I login, it always redirects me to "Welcome to Atmosphir!" each time I try to load a level, and I already bought my "necessary" extra items with the 150 atmos I started out with. It's almost like they want to scam me into buying more atmos.

Everyone who is having problems:
I would advise you go to the forums (http://www.atmosphir.com/atmosphir/forum) and create a thread in the "Support" section. You will most definitely be able to find help there.

And one last note, please note that the game is still in beta. There are bound to be problems, and with a team of 7 people, some of those problems may take a while to be fixed.

If you haven't tried this game, Do it! An account is very easy to make, and it sends you off on a great tutorial level where you learn the basics of this game's type of platforming.

We're always from looking for new members! That is, unless you're a troll. If so, go away. We already have one, and he can be quite a handful.

Will someone please help? I downloaded Unity and waited for it to load, and when it did, I got a line up of characters. When I move my mouse on them, a blue ring appears. But when I click, nothing. It works for my sister who has the same browser (IE) so why won't it respond? I can click the "login" button, but that's it. Whaaaaa.

This has surprisingly solid 3D for an independent game. They still need to work out the kinks with hit-detection for props - especially the trees, which if you jump onto them sort of make you float over the leaves rather than land - so that the character actions are more solid. One place where it could be especially improved is removing detection entirely, or almost entirely, when jumping up from underneath a prop object. I've noticed this particularly with the giant flowers, which oddly hamper your jumping ability when you're under them...even though they're just flowers. But otherwise I'm impressed.

Obviously, like all 3D platformers, it's imperative that you go into the options and change the controls until you're comfortable with them (it's interesting how many people are just taking it for granted that the control scheme is as it is. I take it most of you guys are console gamers?). After that, getting into it was a snap. Which is great news for such an ambitious game. It's so easy to go big on the fun details and forget to spend enough time on the vital elements. So bravo!

I'll need to play it some more in order to tell how good it truly is, but it's certainly off to a great start.

The game has good platforming despite a bug with climbing ledges, but any combat makes the player freeze.

If a level doesn't work, it's the designers fault. Don't blame atmosphir for having some bad levels. PM the designer instead.

Really well done! well polished in every aspect.

But I couldn't find a single level that was fun to play, and I've been trying for a couple of days now. Maybe the community is too young, I'll remember to chech back on this on the future :]

This is a great community generated game and I've seen some great levels but a few things about the controls and the overall "feel" still bug me. Super Mario this is not.

For those of you having trouble finding any good levels, I'd suggest playing Level of the Days. You can find them in the Cool Levels section of the forums, and all LOTDs are of a very high quality. I should know, I'm a member of the Editorial Staff, like Yanahma.

I'd also suggest the one level I've built in this build of the game, but then I would :P

Also, I'm pretty sure that the Developers are working on making the default control scheme more bearable.

Hello, I'm Kroltan, a user of Atmosphir and a enthusiast developer.
With the help of people from a online forum dedicated to this game, we managed to get the game running once again, currently we have the designer and single-player working, all that's left is remaking the multiplayer modes. Anyways, if you'd like to play this, drop by at OneMoreBlock!

Note: neither I nor anyone in the linked website receive any kind of monetary or otherwise economically valuable feedback from the revival project. We do this as a side project, as a homage to this awesome game.
