Laserworx

LaserworxArtbegotti[An Upfront Warning: This will not be a problem for everyone, but the auto-save in Laserworx did not work consistently for some JIG staff, so closing the game and coming back to it meant they had to start over again. Try refreshing the browser page after a couple of levels to make sure your game is being saved.]

Laserworx is an enlightening puzzler by Liszkay (Treasure in the Dark) where your goal is to light up all the lasercells on a grid. One hundred beaming levels await you, hoping to trip you up with a plethora of tricks and twists.

Scattered about the floor are several laserspots, which can often be moved around by dragging them with the mouse. Between certain pairs of laserspots, you'll find, naturally, laserbeams. These laserbeams always form a straight line connection between laserspots, even when placed on the grid in different rows or columns. (In other words, diagonals are very much allowed.) When a laserbeam passes through a lasercell, even by the tiniest corner, the lasercell will switch on (or off). Light up all the lasercells, and you'll be on your way to the next level.

But (literally) blocking your way are the dreaded laserwalls, which— Sorry, they're just plain walls, I guess not everything has the word "laser" tacked onto it. Blocking your way are walls, which render any laserbeam that passes through them useless. Also, you have to deal with your own laserspots, which can only move across unoccupied floor tiles, and that's even assuming you're allowed to move them. You'll eventually have to juggle moving around almost every element of the game, including the lasercells, the walls, and even the floor tiles.

Each level has an unlimited amount of time to work with. Instead, your score for a level is determined by how few "moves" you make in order to get to a solution. Each time you drag any object one square, a "move" is deducted. There is no way to undo moves (except by restarting a level), so be sure to plan ahead for a high score.

Analysis: One of the many positive notes about Laserworx is that across its 100 levels, the idea of moving things around to connect objects in lines doesn't tire quickly. In fact, the levels are set up to give you a variety of challenges in order. One level, you might be moving the laserspots, the next might have you moving the lasercells and the walls, the following level might have you moving laserspots that control the movement of other laserspots. All the while, you've got to pay attention to which lasercells are already lit and don't need a laserbeam passing through them.

This game's interface is nicely set up, with switches and sliders that make you feel like you're at the control panel of some higher establishment for intergalactic laser manipulation (hereafter referred to as SHE-FILM).

As a final tip, keep in mind that you have the ability to move objects across the board into a lot of configurations, but even though the level might be symmetric in nature, your solution does not need to be. One of the hardest habits to break your mind free from is the urge to make the left side look the same as the right, or have the whole thing be diametrically symmetrical (looks the same when turned 180 degrees, like most crossword puzzles). Often times, the easiest solutions look like a box of red toothpicks dropped on the floor. If you can let go of any perfectionist tendancies you might have, you'll learn to appreciate a line for the fact that it's a line, no matter how slanted.

Play Laserworx.

Perhaps the saving issue is browser-related? I played a few levels in Google Chrome, closed down all instances of Chrome, then re-opened, and my game was saved, so it seems to keep games fine in Chrome.

Great game! Only a few levels in, and a seemingly-easy puzzle has me stumped. This will obviously get ugly. :-D

My only gripe: When you end a level, there are several seconds of score-tallying followed by a loud radio-static buzz. The radio-static noise is louder than any other component of the game, and is consistently irritating. I wish I could keep the sound effects but nix that.

Actually, I'm having a real problem with puzzle 22. I'm not spoilering this, since I think it's a bug, not a problem-solving problem:

The lasers are all fixed, and some of the blocks to be lit are fixed, while others are movable. My movable blocks can light up, but none of the non-movable blocks light up, even when they're obviously within the parameters of lightable--that is, they're clearly intersected by a working, non-blocked laser. In fact, all eight non-movable blocks start like this, and should be lit, but aren't.

Am I missing a gameplay element, or is this a bug?

Scottique:

This is in fact a gameplay element.

Keep in mind that some lasercells are on to begin with, and are switched "off" when there's a laser going through them.

Try moving a wall in the way of that beam and see what happens. :)

So I have to go through this all in one go? Darn.

I never had a problem with the auto-save. I think it's a rare issue. It just might be worth reloading the game after a couple of levels to see if your progress is being saved.

Fun puzzle game, but I will say the scoring system is dumb. The number of moves you take has little to do with how well you figure out the puzzle, and more to do with how patient you are at painstakingly dragging around the lasers. I would much rather it let me place the laser anywhere, without having to go around walls and such, since the piece never really kept up with my mouse.

Ah, I see, some levels have islands... interesting.

Seriously JayIsGames users? This excellent and relatively unique puzzle game gets 3 out 5 stars, and every game that's a rehash of the tired old escape-the-room and tower defense genres gets 5 stars?

I swear I don't know you people anymore.

Anyway, anyone figure level 35 yet? I'm stumped.

ninti - It seems to me there are people who rank games based on the screenshot and whether that makes them want to play the game.

"Hmm, this game looks like crap, I'm not even going to play it... 1/5."

I'm stuck on level 9. The movable walls are really limited and I can't seem to be able to fully move them out of the way.

Nevermind. Got it.

Being at level 59 i have to admit that an 'undo' button would be quite helpful sometimes...

hinti: level 35 is not that difficult it seems at first sight. there are 4 non moveable cells and several only vertically moveable cells at the two edges. if still stuck:

Help with level 17 please? I have "lit" the outer ones but can't move the four inner ones? (not sure of the black squares with arrows on that won't move have any relevance?). Thanks

nevermind worked it out. thanks.

on level 17 you have to block the beams with something you can move (try the black blocks) ;)

Is level 20 even possible?

Here's my take: (spoilered to save space):

Because of the way the lasers are linked, two of the lasers will always pass through the center of the grid. Since neither of the endpoints can fall ON a gridline (only between them), there will always be a laser beam travelling through the squares near the center of the grid. However, these squares turn OFF when a laser passes through them. As far as I can tell, there is no way to avoid the situation, so the puzzle cannot be solved.

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

Nevermind, I didn't realize the level wasn't quite symmetrical ;)

If you move one of the laser spots and the connected ones can't move, then they don't. You can use this to "push" the configuration around.

Hmmm, level 43 is proving to be difficult.

level 68 almost killed me... literally...

How do you do level 18?

Anyone got any hints for level 73?

yeah level 73 has been smarter than me for several hours now. it's like i ALMOST have it, but there are still 2 or 3 unlit blocks.

ricainrico/Guest: Yeah, level 73 is quite tricky.

try to create a distorted star of david

bob: How? With patience. ;)

oseeasi: can you tell if the blocks at least are arranged symmetrically? screenshot? this is driving me crazy

ricainrino: i suffered a lot to redo the correct solution, but there is a screenshot under the second spoiler tag :)
BUT, if you still want to try with only hints, then check the first one :)

yes, you can place the lasercells and blocks simmetrically (you will see on the screenshot that i was lazy to finish it that way)

and the screenshot:

level 96 is impossible for me
here i am with two unlit cells...

anyone got a clue how to solve it? i would really appreciate it!

and i solved it... unbelievable...
screenshot is taken (if anyone...)

cannot

move those black ones

on 17!!! grrrrr.

okay, got 17, now have all lit but one on 22... I thought I was doing so well!

ejolie: how can you have one unlit cell on a totally symmetrical level? :)

finished :)

Okay, I must be stupld, but... lvl 5?

Bethany: you have 6 lasercells in two groups, you can form 2 rotated V shapes, > and its inverse out of them

Picture walkthrough for all levels, enjoy :)

Hello, I am on level 75 and I have been on it for hours. I can't figure this one out. I have looked at the spoiler but still can't seem to figure it out. Does anyone know how to arrange the movable grey squares to get the laser pod things adjacent to the two squares? I'd be grateful for any tips. Thanks

I feel pretty stupid.I just spent about two hours trying to turn off all the lit blocks on level 5. wonderful. the best part is that i got through the levels beforehand, so I must have known to light the unlit ones.

75 is giving me fits as well

Kelly, JPT: Somehow I could recall the solution for lvl 75 :)

First, you have to switch the two cells at the left OR the two at the right. Don't switch both sides!

Let's see the switch at the left.
- Move the downmost horizontally moveable panel to the right of the cell in bottom line (c1) and move c1 onto it
- Now move the leftmost vertically moveable panel downwards (3 steps) and the second horizontally moveable to the left (1 step)
- Then you have to get a vertically moveable out of the way of the horizontally moveable panel in the 5th line from the bottom. Place the horizontally moveable ones to the left so you can move the upper cell (c2) next to the other.
- Now move the horizontally moveable above c2 to the right (1 step) and put the vertically moveable to its previous place (you have a 2x2 square with two cells at the bottom, right?). Switch them :) The laserbeams now shouldn't cross each other

Moving c1 to the top:
- Go up with c1 to the original place of c2, then onto the closest upper right unmoveable panel. Then to the one which is at the right close to the bottom. Then down again, to the right. And then up. It's the trickiest - and the hardest to tell. But if you manage to reach the unmoveable in the 2nd line (column 5) you are almost there :) Good luck!
