JohnBYou like old games, right? Games that were made before everyone had a computer in their home. Or games that were made last week and just look like they came out of the decade that brought us Prince, Trapper Keepers, and rolled-down socks. Simplicity knows no age, of course, and that's just what these games strive for in one way or another.

annieandroid.gifAnnie Android (Windows, 4.5MB, free) - A short 2D adventure in the style of classic LucasArts and Sierra games. Living in a world full of emotionless robots, Annie wants nothing more than to ask the handsome Mailbot out on a date. Unfortunately she has been assigned to be another bot's partner. That just won't do! Annie sets out to win his heart and defeat RoboHQ, you know, while she's out and about. Created by Ben Chandler, the entire game is drawn using a six-color palette as a self-imposed artistic limitation.

youprobablywontmakeit.gifYou Probably Won't Make It (Windows, 3.6MB, free) - From the expert in games that are both punishing and a punishment within themselves, Jesse Venbrux (Karoshi: Suicide Salaryman), comes a single-screen platform game that will make you yell in agony. Tap the [up] arrow key to jump, tap it again to double jump. Make it to the exit and don't touch the spikes. If you fail, a bloody mess is smeared across the screen and you have to do it all over again, this time staring at a path left by your previous attempt. Good luck.

assassinblue.gifAssassin Blue (Windows, 9.4MB, free) - A combat-centric platformer game where you play an assassin crawling, jumping and climbing through a castle dispatching ninjas with cool sword moves. Tap the attack button just before your enemy attacks and you'll slice right through them in a very bloody (and dramatic) way. Break an enemy's guard with a special attack, then perform your hitman moves while he's stunned. Download a music pack with better-quality sounds from the link above, or just stick with the fairly catchy MIDI tunes the small download comes with.

pingpong.gifPing Pong! (Windows, 2.3MB, free) - It's ping pong! It was made by cactus! Don't let the simple visuals fool you, there's actually a game to master at the core. There are several different types of hits you can perform, all using [z] and one of the [arrow] keys. How you serve and return shots is all part of the strategy. The computer opponent is nice, but it's even better to sit down with a friend for some multiplayer ping pong!

houseglobe.gifHouse Globe (Mac/Win, 15MB, free) - Crafted by Oxeye Studio (Harvest: Massive Encounter), House Globe is a "demake" of Relic's classic real time strategy game, Homeworld. Your mothership is the large craft near the center of the screen. Harvest resources by sending ships out ot nearby asteroid fields and use them to research more powerful technologies and defend yourself from alien attackers. The source game is one of the first successful 3D RTS games, so naturally House Globe is 2D!

I just played Annie Android from start to end, no assistance. Good stuff. There was one part I got stuck on:

Birdbot wants something. Don't assume too much regarding what it is.

I'm very stuck on level 14 of YPWMI. (I loved the readme file, though.)

I got stuck in Annie Android in the non-puzzle, literal sense. I walked into the window with the weather tower and now I can't leave it. I can do anything within this screen except talk to the Guardbot (if I hover the mouse over him, "talk to Guardbot" shows up, but clicking does nothing).

Unfortunately I saved when I got to this screen, not knowing that I'd glitched, so I'm going to have to start over. :(

I just did a quick playthrough and had the same thing happen again... luckily I had saved BEFORE I went onto the screen... anyone know what might be causing this glitch? Am I going there too early, or doing something?

I've now managed to get onto the screen, and immediately leave, but as soon as I do something (talk to Deathbot, or whatever) the glitch kicks in and I can't leave.

Help? I want to find out what happens!

It's not a glitch (at least I think). Had the same problem, but you can leave the screen by walking down the road (that black square leading up to the door).

I can't figure out how to beat the assasinbots....

Got to level 18 on YPWMI, and we all figure that it's the last level, since nobody has been able to do it yet...hence the name of the game!

Cactus is a genius.

Can anyone tell me how to get past the assasinbots on Annie Android?

to Ray,

i got to that too

but the android kept telling me it wanted to press some button, but how to get close to it?

It isn't just the readme file that's got an interesting little easter egg in it. Open the .sav file with a text editor and you'll find each one starts with... Well... I won't spoil it.

Ok, so I can leave the screen now, but I'm still having the bug (or whatever) where I cannot talk to Guardbot, or use any items on him. It doesn't even give me a "this won't work" type of message, like it does when you try to do another kind of action that is fruitless.

And I did leave before by clicking at the EDGE of the screen, so... don't know what that was about.

@Joye:

You know, I get the same thing, and It happens to the tree you plant in your front yard too...

The only real difference is that if you try to enter the door, the sentrybot stops you.

That being said, help... I have the hammer, waterfruit, key and support device. Where do I go now?

Nevermind... Power of the post, I guess...

@ mkelican

Try breaking some windows with that hammer of yours, I'm sure one of them will break.

P.S.

Polly want a cracker?

Is there a way to increase the size of Annie Android? It gives me an error if I try full screen, but the window is far too small and I can't read any of the text on it. :-/

Blah, things so far about Annie Android that you might want to know:

For some reason, the bird will trade the virus for the module you get from smashing the container on the left end.

If you can't get close enough to the assassinbot to press the button, try going up, and then approaching it from the back. This will stop the one on the left, but only temporarily stop the one on the right.

In order to proceed, you have to use the remote to disable the robot on the right after you've hit the button on him. Look at his serial number before pressing the disable button and using the remote, since he can reactivate relatively quickly when you're not operating the remote.

Still can't get past the guard. I'm thinking it might have to do with deflating his majestic balloon arms, but I haven't figured out the means of doing so yet.

Weirdguy:

Maybe you missed one item while retrieving the cracker?

Pick up a shard of glass on the ground.

weirdguy: have anything *sharp* in your inventory?

Pick up a glass shard from where you broke the glass with the CHAOS HAMMER 7000! and use that to your advantage

I love games with simplistic visuals. They skip all the fluff and get right to the gameplay. My favorite game series ever (the Chzo Mythos series) was composed of gigantic pixels, yet it had one of the most intriguing stories I've ever seen in a game. It was made with AGS just like Annie Android was... and that game works surprisingly well with so few colors. You Probably Wont Make it seems plain sadistic so I don't even think I'll try it... IWBTG still haunts me. Ping Pong is actually rather good but it's pretty darn hard! So far so good with this weekend download.

I'm playing Annie Android, have the hammer, the square-thing and waterfruit.
I tried to break all the windows I saw, but nothing happened. Also, I can't talk to Guardbot. :(
Help?

Got to level 18 of YPWMI and it looks like I have to learn how to walk on the ceiling. How mean.

Yeah I'm stuck on level 18 also. Trying to find out how to flip gravity or something to make it by :P

I finally figured out how to do level 18,

you need to stand on the edge right next to the spike

That was a punishing level to say the least.

Joye, that is a very strange problem you're having, I'm very sorry about it :(. I haven't heard of anyone else who has had this trouble and I'm really not sure what could be causing it!

Phoenix, have you tried playing with the 2x, 3x and 4x filters in the winsetup? It should allow you to increase the window size :).

Thanks for the mention, by the way ^_____^

@Ben Chandler:
How did I miss that option? ^__^

Nice game. Short and sweet.
