Quaint Room

Weekday Escape

JessQuaint Room, created by Japanese developer Mofuya in 2005, is not the most ambitious of escape games. Released barely a year after Crimson Room, the great grand-daddy of the genre, the game hearkens back to a less complicated time. But ah, let us not forget the joys of simplicity! Though briefer and less intricately-plotted than many modern escape games, Quaint Room is nonetheless a quality piece of work, a yummy amuse-bouche that leaves the player wanting more.

QuaintRoomThe scenario is simple. You awaken, disoriented, in a tiny, charming (one might even say...quaint?) room, a cubbyhole furnished with little more than a cupboard and low table. You were visiting your uncle...but wait, you don't have an uncle! What on earth is going on? What's worse, you're locked in this strange place. You can't remember how you got there, but one thing is clear: you gotta get out.

Quaint Room is among the shortest of the room escapes that I've fully reviewed, and certainly one of the easiest, containing only a couple of relatively simple puzzles. Despite this, however, the game is impressively polished and well-made. The graphics, while far from photorealistic, are aesthetically pleasing in a tidy sort of way, and the interface is completely smooth and user-friendly. The game also makes good use of sound, an oft-neglected component of the escape gaming experience; the lack of music and occasional jarring, electrical buzz adds a note of discord to the otherwise peaceful ambience. However, many will be happy to note that unlike in Mofuya's other games, it is impossible to die or find yourself in an inextricable situation while playing Quaint Room.

So, take a break. Relax, step back a few years and enjoy this lovely example of classic Japanese escape gaming goodness. It's the middle of the week, you deserve it!

Walkthrough Guide

This one's pretty easy, but here's a walkthrough if you're having trouble:
Walkthrough

  1. Pick up the matches and pipe off the table in front of you, and the white stick out from the bin. The paper is a hint for a later part of the game.

  2. Look at the pipe you picked up by clicking it, then about item. Click on the open end, and you'll get a crumbled black ball.

  3. Examine the black mush, and click on it to fold it out to a black... shape.

  4. Look under the table for another white stick (2) and under the pink mat for another (3).

  5. Turn left twice, you should end up facing a 'picture'.

  6. Click the bottom right corner of the 'picture' to reveal it's not a picture at all. What a tweest! Take the candle.

  7. Turn left again to face the shelving. Click the left side of the cabinet to open it, take the stick (4). Close it again, and open the other side. Take the wallscroll.

  8. Look in the pot for another stick (5), and get another from the top shelf next to the plate (6).

  9. Turn left again, take the stick from the back corner (7), and final one from under the white... thing?

  10. Use the wallscroll on the white patch on the wall to hang it up, and click the middle to zoom in. Use the black shape on the space between the faint lines to place it on the scroll.

  11. Move back out, and examine the candle. Light it with your matches. Life the white thingumy again, and put the candle under it, then put the white boxamajigger over the top.

  12. Now, wait till the lights flicker again, and a diagram will be displayed on the black box. Memorise this quickly. It changes every time.

  13. Finally, tur left twice again (or right, you know, whatever you fancy)n to face the door. Click on the puzzle in the center, and put the white sticks in the places shown by the black square's diagram. You probably won't use them all. When it's done right, you'll hear a sound.

  14. Zoom out, and open the door. Congratulations!

Easiest...escape...ever. If anybody needs a walkthrough, you should be ashamed.

I know this game is simple compared to the usual Wednesday escape rooms, but that allowed me to complete it for a change without needing help!

Yeah, easy, but it's very annoying how a speech bubble opens pretty much each time you click, and you have to click again to make it disappear, which makes for a clunky game experience, and made me want to shout at the protagonist "WILL YOU JUST SHUT UP?"

Aside from that, it's OK.

Yeah, this one was really easy, probably one I'd recommend for beginners. Here is my contribution for anyone who may be stuck:

The lights are blinking on and off in the room for a reason, sit and watch the black square for a minute or two (if you don't know what I mean, keep hunting, it is really quite easy).

Thor

Thor: That didn't help.

It didn't look any different before, during, or after the flicker. (Neither the one I created, nor the one that's there from the start.)

Peter and Thor:

It would have been better to describe which black box you meant. If you take the scroll, put it on the wall, unravel the black ball, and place it on the scroll, zoom back, put lighted candle under the odd shape, and watch the wall (yes, very extensive) it will flash a shape.

Is there some sort of time limit on this game? I had 9 sticks, and left the game for a while, when I came back I now only have 5. So I'm thinking I can't even complete it at this point. Bug or just some time limit nobody mentioned? The world may never know.

My first game completed wihout the help of a wakthrough !!!
One good occasion to thank all the walkthrough editors for their help on the previous games.
Keep it on...
And a warm hello from Paris...

Thank you Zylth. I WAS staring at the wrong black square.

Simple, but still nice. I liked it. But I had to turn off the sound on my computer to get rid of that annoying buzzing.

Sigh...happy room escape pheromone buzz!

Altogether not a bad room escape, with only one really obnoxious "I get the idea now let me go on with the game" pixel-hunt.

If you already understand what you want to do with the candle, it helps to know that

you can only move the glass cover by clicking the lower-right corner.

Um, never thought I'd complain about a game being too easy but... it's too easy. Waited all week for my fix and I get this? It was over in a few minutes. Oh well. Next week, I suppose.

Why review this and not Swan's Room? Swan's Room had a lot more depth to it, and getting an LDF mention doesn't disqualify a game from getting a full review. I should know; I've written a few "re-reviews" myself.

Annoying. You have to pixel-hunt to figure out

how to get the candle

and the buzzing sound effect and constant speech bubbles were a real pain. Plus, there was a bug or something (maybe just me) where I had to click an object in inventory two or three times to get it to light up.

I like quality room-escape games as much as the next guy, but this isn't one.

Buzzing?!?!

This was a really easy one, yes. It took me a while to...

...figure out how to get the candle from behind the glass that I didn't know was in the way...

...but other than that it was really easy.

A good game for beginners, I think.

haha. i remember this one. always fun to revisit the past. thanks jess!

First time I've ever completed an escape game without having to consult a walkthrough. 5 mushrooms just for making me feel smart.

Wow, Quaint Room was easy! Usually I never get out without help... Thank you for recommending the site, I just had a great time paying Swan's Room. Just as "old" (amazed how fast 4 years pass by..), but what great puzzles!

Allow me to join the throng of people shouting about how easy this was. I needed absolutely no help whatsoever and I solved it pretty quickly.

I think Diamond Baby is another room escape game from a few years back that worths reviewing. There is a complete story, and game play is much more difficult

Hey everyone.
Nice game but very easy.

Didn't like the pixel hunt to open the door, but otherwise good.

The speech bubbles really got in my way. I kept thinking the things I tried didn't work, but really it was just I had to make an extra click.
Maddening.

I didn't do everything in the walkthrough and still got out. Very easy game

Got the 9 white sticks and started putting them in the holes in the black box.
When I heard a "click", I zoomed out and tried to open the door and it opened.

Very short and easy, plus the buzzing noise sounds like a pixelated digital fart

I made it through the same as David. I barely did anything and made it out.

You know...this game would be ridiculously easy if I had been able to figure out how to examine stuff without checking a walkthrough to verify that there is some way to examine it all. FYI: It's that little square button in the lower right hand side (that I thought was a japanese advertisement).

fun game =D but i still wonder what the stick things are actually made of?
