Sprout is a creative and original adventure puzzle game created by Jeff Nusz, of New Zealand, for our second Casual Gameplay Design Competition. From the moment you lay eyes on it you know it's something special. The unique artwork for a Flash game has a paper-cut appearance that lends a storybook atmosphere to the game. This environment perfectly suits the role you play as a young seedling trying to find its way home. Sprout has everything we love to see in a Flash game: originality, a simple design, and a beautiful presentation.
Sprout begins with a small green seed-pod stranded on a tiny island. This seedling has the peculiar ability to learn to grow into different plants. For example, stuck on the island with no way to cross the water, the palm trees teach you how to grow into a coconut. With a click of the mouse you transform, and then just sit back and watch the story unfold.
Different situations calls for different transformations, and you cannot always be sure what effect growing into one form can have. Becoming a coconut might help you move forward. It could also cause you to roll back to where you began. This sense of innocent exploration is one of the most charming aspects of Sprout. Making mistakes and testing the environment are integral parts of the experience.
Analysis: When I first saw Sprout I knew I was in for a treat. During the word-less introduction I could almost hear the seedling asking the palm trees where to find its home. As many game designers have pointed out, the main ingredient in a successful game is human emotion. If you can tap that your players are hooked. Sprout nets your emotions from the very beginning and never lets go. You want this young seed-pod to succeed and you'll do anything you can to make that happen. You internalize the story and bring the seedling to life; Sprout simply lets you play out the story you're already invested in. That gives the game a very magical feeling, and Jeff chose the perfect art style and setting to bring it alive.
Congratulations, Jeff, on an excellent entry into our competition. Sprout shows a lot of thought and creativity on your part and deserves all the praise we can possibly give it!
Sprout was a welcome surprise from start to finish. Beautiful artwork is well complemented by a detailed soundtrack to create lush environments for your little sprout's journey. The gameplay itself is like nothing I've ever played before, and the puzzles are tricky without being frustrating. You have a very few simple options to choose from at any given point in the game, yet the solution to each puzzle sometimes vexed me through several attempts. A well-deserved win!
This one was really neat! I especially like games where you have to select the right tool for each job, and I feel Sprout does this in a superb way. The art is fantastic—charming and cute—and the noises complemented them well. I love how the ambient sounds fade from one to the next as you scroll along the landscape. This is also probably the most kid-friendly game of the contest. Not too challenging, but it’s clearly not the type of game that would benefit from overly difficult puzzles. My only complaint is that it ended!
I, too, was delighted from the moment the game first loaded. How could one not be? The quaint colored pencil drawings and cinematic intro evoke feelings of being transported to a far away island. The transition to widescreen at the conclusion of the intro is an excellent touch that effectively pulls you right into the story, surrounding you in its magic. But my particular delight went deeper than the superficial; for when I was first presented with the choice between two options—the coconut and the dandelion—visions of Grow ver.1 danced through my head. But Sprout is not a Grow clone; Jeff has created a unique experience all his own. The game perfectly embodies the theme of this competition on multiple levels, and for that it is quite deserving of the highest award. It has been a pleasure and an honor having Sprout part of this competition. Well done, Jeff!

Wow
Out of all the games ive played lately that was definitely one of the best. I never knew that such a simple idea would make such a good game.
Top Bannana, and i want more!

Ok, great game and stuff. But to the people who thought that was an apple tree or tomato plant... seriously, when was the last time you saw a bird eat an entire stinking apple? Seriously, wake up your senses or something. It is some kind of berry bush - raspberry or something like that. Birds decimate those things.

Great game!!! Easy but it still takes some thought. It was a brilliant idea.
Posted by: BubbaMan | March 8, 2007 10:01 PM
I win! I win! I never win... That was goregeous and I got through a game for once! Yea, me! It was a great end to my crappy day. I felt like I was visiting a far away land, like I could see myself there and the cool thing is, if you win, I'll be able to share it with my twenty month old later on in his life! Thank you! (curtsy)

The plant is a pomegranate. Lovely game, very cool visuals.
P.S. do you have pomegranates over in America?

how to cross the river?
Posted by: spencer | March 9, 2007 1:56 PM
So cool!!! I want a sequel with more plants, longer board, and maybe more than one seed so that they can interact?
Oh and Andrew...I can't believe nobody thought of pomegranates!! Yes we have them in the USA, but I don't think they grow here!! ...which explains why nobody knows what that bush looks like ;)

Beautiful to look at, addictive to play and leaves you feeling like you've been of great benefit to an ecosystem... What more could we ask of a Grow game? Lovely.

I loved playing this game, and I even enjoyed replaying it just to show my husband how neat it was. We both really liked the fact that it's somewhat educational too, in that it shows you how plants use wind, water, and animals to move around and grow. Just a great little game

Thank you all for your comments! As the little sprout would say; *boing* *boing*! Making this game was a ton of fun, and I'm glad so many people enjoyed playing it.
Huge thanks to Jay for creating this site, and bringing together such a great community of people. The links and reviews that jay and co. provide on a daily basis are really quite amazing. With so much stuff out there, this site's consistent quality and thoroughness is fantastic.
This contest was a great experience. I've always had lots of opinions about what makes games fun or not-so-fun, and this contest was the kick in the pants to finally "put up or shut up." The community on jayisgames is so open-minded, honest, and constructive that I knew if I put in the energy to do my best, it would be kindly received. So thank you all for being my inspiration, and giving me the confidence to do something a bit different.
I don't have any plans for a "Sprout II" just yet, but I'm sure one day the little green guy will tire of the crowded forest and dream of new exotic destinations. There's a whole world of adventures waiting out there!
Posted by: Jeff | March 11, 2007 8:23 PM
Amazing game, but bug:
Posted by: jboy | March 11, 2007 8:26 PM
The crowded forest to exotic destinations... it feels like as if one of those seeds want to go backwards in the storyline...
Quite addicting to see how the seedling and its plants interact with the environment, and it does have that imaginative flair thanks to the drawing styles. Good game to pass the time :).

Congratulations Jeff =D
I'm glad that so many people (including the jury) knew better than me and valued this game as the best. After reading the people's comments I must say that I was blind for number of things that made 'Happy Seed' to distinguish from other games. Now that I consider this game, I noticed that there are a lot of unique problem solving and learning.
P.S. I just noticed that I can scroll the view horizontally if I hold the mouse near the edge. That is nice :)

Okay, clumsy me :(
I meant of course to say 'Sprout'. I scrolled up the page to check what was the name of the Jeff's game and as it happen there was 'Happy Seed' on Replay section.
Well, that would have been a good name for Jeff's game too if only it were not used already. That seed just must be happy :)

Bug: When I turned into a berry bush near the sheep, before I climbed over the hill, I wouldn't turn back. My guy just sat there with his fruit and I couldn't do anything.

What a fun and beautiful little game.
Absolutely my favorite from this batch of great entries.
Thanks Jeff for making a game that teased my brain without making me feel dumb :)
Posted by: Ducatist | March 17, 2007 12:58 AM
Hi
Really great game, like the sounds, graphics and puzzles. I like the fact you have to be persistent and that you can go quite happily down the wrong path!
I found it really helped scrolling ahead to look at the terrain and then stopping and thinking about what I needed to do.
Posted by: Becky | March 17, 2007 11:57 AM
what a beautiful game, I absolutly loved it! so cute! and I made it through the whole game by my self! jizez! hope more comes! love the idea of the little seed that doesn't know what it wants to be! adorable, and so cute ending when (read spoiler for rest)
by the way, what you people have been calling tomato plant, apple tree, berry bush, whatever is actually a pomegranate, it has big seeds inside mixed with the red fruit inside, tastes actually very good!
Posted by: postdog | April 1, 2007 5:42 PM
What plant am i meant to be when i get to the desert? If i am a palm, the seed just stays there, if i am a flower, the seed blows back to the sheep and if i am a apple tree it burns, so what am i meant to do??? its a funny game but it frustrating when you have to backwards.
Please help me

Here is the complete walkthrough (Sorry Jay I forgot my typKey account info)
Learn how to become a fruit bush.
He'll go back to the top of the hill.
He'll carry you back home when he gets called in to his pen.
If you turn into a fruit tree to make your way into the desert you will get fried. But you get stuck and have to float back, anyways.
The bird flies down and eats you and 'drops' you off on the top of the cliff.
Choose fruit tree. The bird on the left steals you away and puts you back at the top of the cliff.
Choose vine to fling him away.
Then choose coconut to float back over.
Posted by: Link | April 13, 2007 11:49 AM
they are pomegranates not tomatoes.

this is a spoiler i guess.... just didn't know why the spoiler thingy wouldn't paste onto here
well anyways. i'm not sure if anyone else stated this yet but theres an easier way then taking a hour taking smacks at the dam, you can just turn into an apple tree outside the farmers house and then when he's done "plantin" you, you can turn into a coconut and roll into the desert~

Very, very fun. XD It was adorable (I want a sprout!), and pretty graphically, and fun, and it wasn't annoyingly hard, but it wasn't too easy, either. And it definitely made me smile the entire time. ^_^
Very cool. <3

Dude this game was amazing. Games that hook you from the initial. I kept going, come on I want to learn to be more things but you kept just enough of a tease before turning into another thing.
You show great potential for creativity and logic and I hope you'll set it up so you can pump out another game.
Posted by: Anonymous | November 22, 2007 6:27 AM
Is it just me, or did any body else think,"Ha! Serves that bird (the fat one) right for stealing food from the skinny bird," when it got shot into the distance?
Also, someone mentioned they wanted to know what the moral of the story was. Although I don't think it was meant to be over analyzed, the moral might be finding a place to belong.
Nice game!

Wow I really, really suck at point and click games, which this is most reminiscent of, but this I got through without a problem, which was nice, it wasn't annoyingly easy, which was nice, and I burned some time, which was also nice. Probably the most satisfying game I've played in a long time.

That was a most wonderful game!
I do not think that the story had a "moral", but I do think that it is just showing the journey a seed can make, and how many varities can be made (the little group at the end!).
I reckon sequels are definitly in order... or a longer version!

Loved the colored-pencil style graphics and the soothing sound effects (no annoying background music, yay!).
I don't get why everyone keeps saying it's a pomegranate, though, when it's clearly a blueberry bush. I'm grown both, and birds will not eat all the fruits off a pomegranate, but they'll strip a blueberry bush in minutes.
