In Old School RuneScape, Farming is a rewarding skill that can earn you a good amount of gold with consistent herb runs.

Unlike other skills, Farming can be trained passively, as crops will grow even when you log out. In this article, we'll discuss the main types of farming patches, farming tools, and farming runs -- and everything else you need to get started with Farming. Get excited, and read on!

Required Items
You'll need a few of these things before you can start farming. The first is a Rake, Watering Can, Spade, Seed dibber - these farming tools are used to plant crops, though you can pay nearby farmers to take care of trees and allotments.

The second are Seeds or saplings, so crops that you plant which gain experience when they mature.

Third and finally you'll need good old compost. Fill the farming patch with this before planting crops; better compost usually produces more yield.

Farming Methods
We'll cover two farming methods here - tree runs for faster experience and herb runs for consistent profit.

Tree Runs

Tree runs are the main method of training farming, as this method will give you experience. However, be warned that it can cost a lot of gold at higher levels. For this method, you'll want to buy the highest-tiered tree saplings available (or the most affordable), and plant it on the appropriate farming patch.

There are several types of trees and patches -- trees, fruit trees, and special trees. Near the patches, you'll find a gardener assigned to it, and you can pay them to guarantee that the trees will become fully-grown. Listed below are the locations of the tree patches, and the fastest way of traveling to the patches.

Tree Patches
-West of Lumbridge Castle: Lumbridge teleport
-Varrock Palace: Varrock teleport, Grand Exchange Spirit Tree, and Ring of wealth
-Falador Park: Falador teleport and Ring of wealth
-Taverley: Teleport to house if house is located in Taverley, Games necklace, and Falador teleport
-Tree Gnome Stronghold: Tree Gnome Stronghold Spirit Tree and Grand seed pod
-Farming Guild: Planted Spirit tree in Farming Guild and Skills necklace

Fruit Tree Patches
-Tree Gnome Stronghold: Tree Gnome Stronghold Spirit Tree and Grand seed pod
-Catherby: Catherby teleport and Camelot teleport
-Outside Tree Gnome maze: Tree Gnome Village Spirit Tree (follow Elkoy to guide you outside near the patch) and Fairy ring code c-i-q
-Brimhaven: Teleport to house if house is located in Brimhaven and Planted Spirit tree in Brimhaven
-Lletya: Teleport crystal
-Farming Guild: Planted Spirit tree in Farming Guild and Skills necklace

Special Tree Patches
-Hardwood: Use the Digsite pendant to teleport to the Digsite, then travel to Fossil Island. The island has 3 hardwood patches. The Locus Oasis has a hardwood patch which you can get to by using Fairy ring code a-j-p too.
-Calquat: This patch is located in Tai Bwo Wannai, which you can teleport to by going to Brimhaven then walking towards the patch.
-Crystal: Located in Prifddinas, you can teleport here by using a Teleport crystal.
-Celastrus: This is located inside the Farming Guild, and the fastest way would be a Skills necklace teleport.
-Redwood: This is also located inside the Farming Guild, and you can go here with any method listed above.

Herb runs
Herb runs are a profitable but slow way to farm. These runs can offset some of the costs of doing tree runs though, making them a good option if you don't have time to actively play OSRS.

Another option of making money without actively playing is by buying OSRS gold via a site like PlayerAuctions. Unlike trees and allotments, you can't pay farmers to take care of your planted herbs. You need to use compost to reduce the risk of the herb dying and increase its yield, so always use ultracompost on expensive herbs. In cases that your crop is diseased, you can use a plant cure to restore it back to a healthy state.

Herb Patches
-South of Falador: Explorer's ring teleport, Falador teleport, and Amulet of glory to Draynor Village
-West of Port Phasmatys: Ectophial
-Catherby: Catherby teleport and Camelot teleport
-Ardougne: Ardougne teleport, Ardougne cloak teleport, and Fairy ring code b-l-r
-Hosidius: Spirit tree and Skills necklace teleport to Woodcutting Guild
-Troll Stronghold rooftop: Trollheim teleport (then take shortcut to rooftop nearby requiring 73 Agility) and Stony basalt teleport
-Harmony Island: Ectophial to Port Phasmatys (then charter a boat to Mos Le'Harmless to get to Harmony Island) and Trouble

-Brewing minigame teleport, then run southwest
-Weiss: Icy basalt teleport
-Farming Guild: Planted Spirit tree in Farming Guild and Skills necklace
-Civitas illa Fortis: Quetzal whistle teleport to Hunter Guild (then head north) and Fairy ring code a-j-p, then head northwest
So there you go! We hope you find these tips useful, and do let us know how you get on. If you need help with other skills, you may avail the use of an OSRS power leveling service like this one on PlayerAuctions - or read more of our guides, coming soon.
