Samorost 2 is finally here, the sequel to the game that proved to me that amazing and immersive, interactive experiences can be achieved in any browser with Flash. The original Samorost is undeniably one of the greatest casual games ever to have graced the Web, and was one of the primary sources of inspiration for the casual games focus of this blog. And now, there are two (2) brand new chapters to play in the Samorost universe.
In the first chapter, the main character from the original game—the one you helped save his planet from collision with another—loses his puppy when a couple of aliens trespass on his little planet and dognap his pet. Your mission is to rescue the puppy from its captors. The second chapter is a pay-for-play download ($6.90 USD) that continues at the point of the first chapter's cliffhanger ending. What you receive is a zip archive of the entire Samorost 2 game, including both chapters, for a seamless interactive experience.
By virtue of a "2" in its title, there exist expectations for meeting or exceeding the graphics and gameplay standards set by first game in the series, and I am pleased to report that the game does not disappoint on either count. Samorost 2 contains 11 all-new levels comprised of over 15 richly detailed alien environments. The artwork, which again is both gorgeous and surreal, contains many interactive elements that bring each scene to life before your eyes. Amanita Design achieves the same delicate balance between photo-realistic bitmap images and Flash vector graphics that gave the first game its illustrious charm.
As with the first, each level in Samorost 2 contains puzzles that must be solved to advance the main character through the adventure. A puzzle usually consists of clicking on an object to activate, a creature to perform an action, or a location to move to. Some puzzles require multiple actions to be performed; some in a particular sequence, and others with precise timing. And while none of the puzzles are very difficult, there are a couple that will require thought and reasoning to work out what must be done. As with the original, there are no gameplay dead-ends: all puzzles remain solvable no matter what you do first, and is a quality in which both Samorost games exhibit excellence in design.
Where Samorost 2 surpasses its well-established predecessor is in its size and its soundtrack. There are more animated environments to marvel at, more puzzles to solve, and more interactive elements to click in this second game of the series than ever before. Though even larger than its size, Amanita Design has pulled all stops at providing the very best music and sound effects they could find to complement the remarkable visual experiences in the game. Two talented artists, both named Tomas Dvorak, collaborated to provide all of the audio in Samorost 2, and they have produced some of the finest music and sound effects I've ever heard in a Flash game. Tomas Dvorak (nickname: floex) composed the music, and Tomas Dvorak (nickname: pif) created the sound effects as he did for the original Samorost. Together their efforts have given each environment its own characteristic soundtrack that succeeds in capturing the personality of its visuals. The music is so good, I found myself reloading the different levels of the game for background music to enjoy as I was writing this review.
On the downside, the initial release of the game has been marred by extremely long load times due to the popularity of the game and the resulting high volume of traffic hitting the servers on which the game is hosted. To compound the problem, a couple of bugs also surfaced that caused many people to experience difficulty getting levels to load properly. Amanita Design has been quick to respond to the bugs by issuing repaired versions of the game to everyone who purchased the full version.
All things considered, this second game of the Samorost series lives well up to the lofty expectations set by the first. It is every bit a sequel that includes all of the best qualities that made the first game remarkable, and then adds more environments, more puzzles, and more sound and music. The result is a game that continues the reputation set by the first as being one of the finest immersive interactive experiences available on the Web today. It is altogether a truly exceptional work of interactive art.
If you're looking to get your money's worth out of the second chapter alone, then you probably will be disappointed as it is a bit shorter than the first chapter. On the other hand, those who consider both chapters of Samorost 2 as a whole will be pleased with what they receive for the few dollars it costs. And while you can play the first chapter alone for free, Samorost 2 is a well orchestrated cadence composed of two chapters that should be experienced seamlessly together as one, and missed by no one. Click.

Comments (may contain spoilers)
oh rats... i just finished the 1st chapter and i'm craving for more! i want to buy the full game but i'm still too young to buy things online...
it's a very nice game... it was easy and cute! ^_^
chapter 2... T_T
Barman - with Windows, it's anybody's guess what's wrong, but I'd start with making sure your OS has all of the Windows Updates applied, including the latest Service Pack. If that doesn't help, then I would try downloading the game again in case it was corrupted somehow during download.
I imagine if you just purchased the game a couple of hours ago, then you got the repaired version fixing the problem discovered yesterday.
Emailed tech support and they sent me a new linky, thats sorted it... now... first level of chapter 2... I've escaped the clutches of the evil lamp post but haveb't the foggiest what to do now...
The new download did fix the problem with the sausage and the fat blue guy. I am glad they took care of that.
For the first level of chapter 2

second part of first level of chapter 2

Leesha Joy (and others) Level 3 walkthrough:
This one is a bit tough

1.Click on the door to the lighthouse
2.Open the cabinet
3.Click on the coffee, it will add to the tea kettle
4.Then click on the handle to add water to the tea kettle
5.Take the tea kettle and place it on the fire at the top of the lighthouse until it starts to boil
6.Pull the string to ring the bell, the old man will lean his head back.
7.Quickly take the tea kettle, then click on the old mans mouth to pour it in there. He will then wake up and you can put the kettle back in the cabinet.
8.Now click back outside by the bell rope.
9.Click on the white "balloon" sticking out of the top of the device at the bottom of the screen. You will take the ballon.
10.Click again near the path at the top of the hill to the left. This will take you to another screen.
11.Click on the chimney to the top left of the next screen. You will place the ballon on the chimney.
12.Take the tallest stick that is just to the right of where you stand on the ground.
13.Take the stick and tickle the nose of the walrus looking creature at the top of the hill. He will sneeze and knock down the pitch fork.
14.Click on the pitch fork to add food to the trough. One walrus looking creature will come down to eat.
15.When the walrus is eating, position the pipe above the walrus by using the knobs to the lower left to move it in or out.
16.When the walrus is done, he will fart out a bubble. You need to catch this in the pipe end.
17.With the bubble in the pipe end, click on the plunger at the top of the hill to the left to suck it into the balloon. You must do this quickly before the bubble pops.
18.Repeat steps 14-17 three times to fill the balloon completely.
19.When you are done, click on the balloon, and then click on yourself. You will head back to the other screen again.
20.Take the balloon and attach it back to the machine where you took it from to begin with.
21.Click on the plunger on the left side of the machine. This will empty the balloon into the maching. Do not click on the bellows yet, otherwise you will have to do the filling thing all over again.
21.Go onto the boat by clicking on the right side (to the right of the mast)
22.Now this part takes a little timing. Click on yourself, you will jump and move the boat down. When the boat is at its lowest position, click on the bellows to extend the hose and fill the boat. You will know if you did this right if the taxi light on the ship comes on.
23.Ring the bell again, the old man comes on and flys you home. Yeah, you are done.
For those having problems with the downloaded chapter 2, open the supplied .exe file only and use the load level feature to get to your 2nd chapter. It doesnt seem to work by just opening the swf's. Programmer must have some variable declarations in the first intro that breaks the dog-parachute issue.
Played through the 1st half and have bought the 2nd half now. I love it! Samorost rocks! I had issues with the game too and contacted them. They sent the new version without the bugs in it. Yippee!!!
this is really anoying at the end!
Is the 2nd chapter really worth $9.95? I'm a cheap student and an cautious consumer!
Jej, i finally got to the game with internet explorer, but not with the mozilla. The game was as beautiful as first one.:) But i'm just a student, so i don't buy the 2nd chapter..buhuu.:)
Oh, come on!
I think it broke!

I've only been able to click on the dog house. once the aliens return to their planet, the games does not load anything beyond their landing. This is so frustrating.
I was curious, has anyone got to the MAJAK level yet? I am unable to fugure out the bellows and the boat.

FYI Chapter 1 The code words for each level installation caught my attention. I found a Czech translation site and discovered that the
first level code POKLOP means trap door, and the last BUDOAR, which sounds like boudoir, actually does trans to boudoir. Both apropos. If anyone knows the translations of 2, 3, and 4, I'd love to know.
Love this beautiful game.
I finished it!

Runs out of fuel, end of chapter 1.
Have to buy for chapter 2 :(
POKLOP
SOPOUCH
KOMPOTARNA
BUDOAR
PLANINA
LESIK
MAJAK

Susan: Eraser above has a chapter 3 spoiler with what you need, but a less spoilery version:

While not great on the $/hour ratio, I'm still glad I bought the 2nd bit, just to support the guy. $9.90 for an hour's worth of game isn't great, but if you count all 3 samorost bits and call it an artwork, it's very good value :)
heh okay any1 stuck on the web level with the bugs and bushbaby...

i loved the last game but due to the amount of traffic on the samorost site i have not been able to get on to it, is there any links to the actual game or any possible downloads.
James - yes, for a mere $9.90 you can download both chapters for a seamless Samorost 2 experience. Well worth the few bucks it costs, IMHO.
(Afterall, it's Samorost for gosh sakes!)
Direct link to purchase the Windows version: Samorost (Windows)
Direct link to purchase the Macintosh version: Samorost (Mac)
How do you put the cork in hole in the pipe ? I cant get out of the house next to the hammering slug to plug it up!
Mork - cork help:

Jay I totally agree ...great game...i havent paid for anything and i'm not sure I will but i'm sure it is great
It's a great game . . . too bad I can't buy the second chapter . . .
I don't know if it's just me or what, but whenever I try to play, I have trouble getting the first level to load. Its like the screen goes black after I click 'play'. Then if I actually do play the first level, once they get to the new planet the second level will not load; black screen again. Anyone else experience this? :(
Yes, that's the result of a great number of people all over the world trying to play the free game at the same time off the same servers.
Purchasing the game avoids all that by downloading the entire game to your computer to play whenever you wish, and with no delay. Game play flows quickly and smoothly between levels.
Samorost has long been my favorite game... in fact, I think I was searching for a link to it or games like it when I first arrived here. I'm so thrilled to see #2 out, and more than happy to pay to get past that cliffhanger.
In fact, since my son Roland has his 5th birthday this weekend, enjoyed playing chapter one with me so much, that we're giving him the sequel for a gift. :)
Thanks for passing it along, Jay, and for keeping us entertained in between the original and Samorost 2 :)
Wow.
I mean, wow.
That's a sweet game; it's better than the first for so many reasons! First of all, the puzzles actually are solved by logic rather than simply finding the order to click such as was the case in some parts of Samorost 1.
Anyone know how to get the 'pipe filling' for the smoking man after running out of fuel?
Pipe filling:

As Susan Simon asked--translations of the passwords
1 P***** trap door
2 S****** vent, flue
3 K********* stew?
4 B***** budoir
5 P****** plain
6 L**** grove
7 M**** lighthouse
And Jay, about the pipe, where is the little hole? I swear I've clicked everywhere on and around that stump.
Pipe filling:

If this does not work for you, try reloading the level again. It never fails for me with the Mac version.
Thanks, Tocharianne, for the translations! Seemed like the words might have been clues, and I guess in retrospect they were.
Need some help with the blue guy and sausage. I can free my guy, but he gets taken again. Not sure how to free dog.
I am an idiot. Forget my last post.
Glomer - don't be so hard on yourself. That one stumped me for a bit as well. =)
What a wonderful game! Thank you to everyone who left spoilers, appreciate your effort: saved me hours of headbanging (it's more logical than the first one, but not that logical). I kind of wish I'd bought it straight off, rather than playing it to the cliffhanger, but I bought it anyway and don't feel robbed.
/me sits back and plays it again while waiting for #3...
Somebody needs to invest some money to let this guy design a larger game. He clearly has the vision and design chops to pull it off.
I played through the free version of this, and thought it was short, so I think the extra chapter probably wouldn't be worth the money. But I'd happily pay 20 or 30 to play a much longer version of this.
I love the game!!!!It is so cool, but I am stuck on the part with the 3 little wheels and the 1 big one.I can't figure out what to do!Somebody who is past this part, please post a message on the board explaining what I need to do!!!!! Thanks so much!!
-Joanna
Joanna - hint for Room with the 3 little wheels and the one large one:

Hey guys, it's it I. HAHAH. Jay, this game is awesome I love the music and graphics for this, overall the gameplay was the best. The fiddling witht he puzzles, MAN!... I thank you for sharing it with you... I will get the Full Version, when I have the money and try to make a walkthrough for that :)
As you know, I am here as for the walkthrough, hope to see you all on the otherside.
Introduction

Just to let you guys know, this is on other Samorost post also.... YEA!!!
hi.
please help me.
how I can go more after have problem with fuel.
I was released from a parachute, but I do not know what to do further.
S1 is my favorite casual game of all times. Does anyone find S2 just as clever but slightly less charming or visually appealing as S1? Is it due to less of the rich photography being used here?
I've been a great fan of Samorost from the very beginning and I must say I'm very satisfied with Samorost 2..BUT

Also, for the cheapo guy, I don't think you will get the money's worth gamewise. I think about 65% of the game is Chapter 1, and it took me about half an hour to finish the additional levels in Chapter 2.
But if you think in the terms how great Samorost 1 was and that the guy gave Chapter 1 of Samorost 2 for free (when he could've charged for all of it) AND that by buying Chapter 2 you will help the guy make more quality games like this in the future, than I don't think it's too much money.
I've just finished the whole game, the gameplay on solving the puzzles are really well thought. Man, did I have to do a lot of click and thanks to eraser for the ending walkthrough, had to cheat a little bit :)... If you don't mind, I'll make a little walkthrough when I feel the time is right. Eraser, may I use part of your walkthrough? HAHAHA
tee hee, that was really a lot better than the first one. the only part i had to cheat at was the wheel - i couldn't figure out the combo, and when i thought they were all correct, it turns out one of them was just a wee bit off. either way, lots of fun! i'm thinking of buying it. =)
I just received this message from ONE of the Tomas Dvoraks who worked on the audio (yes there were two, not one as I had mentioned in the review...)
> Hi Jay!
i read your review of samorost2 today and i am glad it was positive. i would like to notice you that it is not only one Tomas Dvorak responsible for all of the audio(as you state in your review)...BUT there have been two different persons with exactly the same name working on Samorost2. One Tomas Dvorak (nick: floex) made music. Second one (nick: pif = me :) worked on sound effects (also in Samorost1).
keep up good work :)
bye
Tomas Dvorak aka pif
--------------
So, I have updated the review to correct the omission. Apologies to both floex and pif! =)
Im stuck underground just after youve squeezed through a little tunnel theres a big wheel thing that turns but nothing happens and there are three small wheel things above it i assume there is a combo but Im just not gettin it! Please can someone help me!!!
ok guys, i just landed on the other planet after the aliens have taken my dog.

Uh Wendi? Have you tried looking at ANY of the spoilers up there?
AS for me I'm still waiting for it to load.....I have dial-up.....:P
Okey, ive finished the whole game. I must say that the last lvl on chapter 2 was pretty hard to figure out...:-)
My son (8 yrs. old) loves the game, and was excited to continue, even using his own money to buy chapter 2.
After completing the puzzles (in about an hour), he was disappointed to learn that there was no more than a few screens for $9.90.
I understand the need to support the game creators, but this is NOT the way to build trust! I would have been annoyed at paying only $5 for what we received, and MY allowance is considerably more than $3/week!
You might want to write to the game creators at Amanita Design about your complaint, they may be more sympathetic than I. After all, as I mentioned:
"If you're looking to get your money's worth out of the second chapter alone, then you probably will be disappointed as it is a bit shorter than the first chapter."
...or didn't you read my review?
I was not annoyed at paying $9.90 for the game, heck, I even bought the T-shirt for more than twice that amount.
...and I am a struggling college student who does NOT make considerably more than $3/week.
aww..........i want to play the second half but we have to pay.....
passed all the GAMe!
I'm in the third phase of the game (chapter 2 of Samorost 2, the pay version), and have found the guy sitting on the stump. He has told me he wants his pipe. I cannot for the life of me figure out what to do! Help!
Never mind. Figured it out.
i got to lvl 4 with the blue guy. but i backed out to see if the secret code worked and i couldn't get back in, can someone tell me the exact code plz.
am stuck on lvl 2 where the pipe broke, can you guys tell me what to do ?
whoaaa i was just listening to A tribe called quest- scenario and the backround music really reminded me of the samorsoft music.....really wierd
Full Version of Samorost2 is now only for $ 6.90. there is also Soundtrack available for $ 8.90 (192kbps MP3s, 40min, 12 tracks)
I don't want to seem mean, but I hardly think it's "politically correct" to acknowledge fifty percent of the population.
Aside from that though, thanks for bringing this to my attention Jay, I think this has to be one of my very favorite flash games, second only to curing the mentally ill stuffed toys. Both amazingly fun!
I just bought and downloaded S2 for Mac; I use OSX. I have tried running it on Safari, Firefox and IE, and keep having the same problem:

Helice - I also purchased the version for Mac on OS X and I do not have the same issue. I'd make sure you have the latest Flash Player installed (version 8) and that you're using the right version when you launch the game.
hiya i've bought the game and wanted to know where abouts do you write the cheats??
I'm curious about the face of the smoking man. He's the same guy who was puffing on a hookah in Samorost 1, and it looks like a photo of a real person. One of the creators, perhaps? Or one of their friends?
How/Where can I get the whole thing? Chapter 1&2?
I have just been completed the Purchased version of SAMOROST 2... It is superb; Graphics are delicate and charming to say the least... And at only £4.79 UK Pounds... I think that it is worth every penny...
I, like others who visit Jay's blog, (big hug Jay xx) love games... particularly freebies... but i do think that once i a while, it is nice to show your appreciation of the designers... and what better way than by putting one's money where one's mouth is...
And to you Jay... You light up my life :) xx
Walkthrough for part 2

Level 1

Level 2

*coming soon* Level 3.
i love this game but when i start it doesn't have a place for entering level passwords
My boss has just clocked on that i purchased this game.... whoops! I used his credit card and he's not too happy...!!!!!!!
Whoops!
Hi, everybody! I have discovered Samorost today ( even bought the full part 2 version and finished it ! ). I was wondering if any of you could recommend some other similar games on the web ( free of course ). I have tried The Crimson and Viridian Rooms but definitely would like to try others. Look forward to hear your suggestions. Thanks
Osetinka: Try Tork. Not quite as good, but still entertaining.
I will eventually buy the full version. That first chapter was quite possibly the most beautiful piece of game design I've ever seen. Had to get the spoiler for the

WARNING: after the old man at the light house, you can get to the next sceen (up the hill) without the thing you need, and there doesn't seem to be anyway to get back. i just restarted the level and made sure to collect the article i needed (it's white).
I have been enjoying this game. I bought the full version back when it was $6.60. I think even if it was ten it would have been worth it!I couldn't solve it . I got to the Majak level, but I kept trying, and having a good time doing it.It didn't seem I would ever solve it. I peeked at some one's spoiler hint.

Thank you all of you. Especially Jay.
I liked the graphics and the music; however, the actual gameplay was a little too easy. Not that it's bad, but if you're looking for a bit more of a challenge you should check out the Hapland series which has the same kind of feel but a little more difficult.
I only played Chapter I, but I feel that the difficulty would never change even if I kept going. The problem is that although some of the items may be difficult to find and operate, you still could never be "wrong." By "wrong" I mean you could never hit a dead end. If you just kept going and used your head a little then you could make it. Other games require an order to it, or actual puzzles that could take you quite a while to figure out. The gameplay is just too linear.

Ok, I have got up to the old guy near the ship on S2 chapter 2 level 3 or something... thanks to you guys :)
but now, I am having trouble.
I have done this on L3:

Ahh well... If I find a way I will post!!!
-- someone with a simpler mind can decode what i have down if they can't figure my steps out :P
Hello everybody,
I have played samorost 1 and now I am playing samorost 2. I passed the first chapter or level whatever then I learned that the rest is for a price.
I am a GNU/GPL supporter, I am also a supporter of arts and so...
This game is undoubtledly a wonderful piece of artwork and also a clever adventure game.
People buys art pieces for a price but they usually do not pay to see them. Any kind of art including music is a public entity.
I am a scientist and the public will benefit from my work even if want to or not, what I am doing is creating things, creating solutions, creating knowledge for free. Why this kind of creation should not be free also.
I completely understand the amount of work the designers of the game has put in, But after I learned about the 8 year old boy (posted here) being sad about not playing any further I myself got sad too.
Imagine yourself as a child. Children can easily get fascinated by games like this, they do not just like the game they love it, they find themselves within the atmosphere of the game. If it is cut in half their sorrow will be no less than the sorrow of a child whose toy or candy is grasped from his/her hands. It does not matter what the price of the game is; eve if it is only one cent or a thousand dollars this will happen.
I am not angry over the designers of the game nor am I judging their pricing right or wrong. If this game was not a beautiful one I would say what the heck, some ordinary people has coded a game and selling it, it is normal, but this game is a beauty indeed, it is a creation so why sell it?
Thank you all.
Well, what makes me a trifle sad is when someone makes a wonderful game like this and people say "Why should we support them? After all, they would create anyway!"
If an 8 year old is sad because something people put endless hours of sweat and love into costs as much as a McDonald's Happy Meal, I fault the parents for not instilling respect for creativity. Artists need to eat too, and if they can support themselves with their work, they have more time to create.
I spent my $6.90. I want to see more things like this on the web.
Still have trouble with the

YAY! I finished :) Hurrah for Amanita designs.
But I probably would not have gotten past the last level if I hadn't read the spoiler about

and

The last level is a bit tricky, and requires timing of events. I don't see a walkthrough above, so here is mine.

Hope all that helps! I want Samorost Three!
This game was really cool. I liked how the graphics are kinda realistic.

is there a samorost 3 in the pipeline anyone know?
or has one been made already?
One note on the final step. When the full balloon is attached to the pump, you must first pull the nozzle to get the gas into the pump. THEN, when you go and jump on the ship to lower it, pump the bellows and release the nozzle again to get the gas from the pump to the ship. Once I realized that I replayed in five minutes.
Help! How do you get the hammer when the snail is drinking? All the character does is stand with his back to me and stare.
Erp, got it. I want the second chapter! But my dad thinks the game is weird.
Seeing as how I am not sure what else Amanita Design has released since this, I am buying the full version in the hopes that it will encourage them to make moooooore! This is one of the smoothest, most beautiful, and best sounding things you can get for 7 dollars and I would buy more if they made it.
where is the keyhole?
Is there a downloadable demo for Samorost 2. I don't want to get it finding that it doesn't work.
[Edit: The 'demo' for Samorost 2 is played in a browser window, and you can play it by clicking one of the images above. Your browser takes care of downloading it automatically. There is no downloadable demo to play offline that I am aware of. You can, of course, pay the $6.95 and download the full version, a fair purchase price for this award-winning game. Highly recommended. -Jay]
I'm at the Lesik level of Ch2, you know, with the guy sitting on a stump in a forest? I've clicked him and he said something about a pipe, but then besides clicking the bells hanging from his hat and giving them to the bird, I can't figure out what to do. Help?
Something went wrong.... After buying the game a while ago and playing it for the twentifth time, the game froze and it said there was an error with the flash pluggin. When I tried opening the game again, it didn't work. There was just a blank screen.
Crazy game
Ok, i just recently found out about this game. And read these interesting posts. If any1 still reads it, one of you wanted translation of all level names, but u dont have right one answer for third (KOMPOTARINA), well, i am from Balkans, and there is something that we call KOMPOT (COMPOT), thats something similar as Jam, marmelade... but its made of whole fruit, and u dont eat it with spoon or on bread (duh!), but just like fruit. It has sweety taste, sweeter than regular fruit. Something like marinaded fruit.
Now you got it, third level is place where they make Kompot. THE END.
The balloon is fully inflated but it won't release. Help!!!! ~Cindy
I play many casual games as a pastime. This one was different than any others I have played and it was beautiful as well.
As far as paying for "art" how do we expect art to be created. Michaelangelo had sponsors who paid him a lot more than the price of a game to create art that survives to this day. I realize that the game creators may not be Michaelangelo, but they still create art in their way. Whoever says that art should be free needs to look back at history.
For Kevin:
Re-download your flash player, that should fix your problem.
Ahh! I got to the part with the fat blue guy, he ate the white dude, spit him out, then this green thing came and sucked him up. I also got to the sausage, skull, and flying hat part, but my gu is still up there! I don't know what to do!!
