Orpheus' Revenge

I have not had time lately to scour the Web for games worthy of discussion here. Presently I am 'nose to the grindstone' at work studying for a practical exam in XSLT tomorrow, and working on a multi-user Flash adventure game. Look for another update again soon.

Orpheus' RevengeFiled under the 'downloadable' category, someone recently asked if Orpheus' Revenge was available anywhere online to download. Well, it just so happens that it is. Dan Volpe, code-master and one of our original Orpheus' Revenge team members, has put up a Web page for the game complete with a zip-file containing an executable of the game (Windows, DirectX 9.0b+).

Orpheus' Revenge is a 2D side-scrolling platform shooter game. It was developed at RIT as part of the Games Programming course concentration taught by Andy Phelps during the 10-week winter quarter, 2003-2004. The team responsible for the game consisted of: Dan Volpe, Nate Rode, Alex Cutting, Patrick Bellanca, and yours truly. Click.

While you are there, check out Dan's resume and other details. I hear he's looking for a job, and he is one of the best software engineers I have met while at RIT.

grtz, Max.

hey jay you should go get the eagle eye game off of teagames.com so i can play it your site is one of the only ones not blocked at my school that has decent games. get it its fun

Jimbo - been there, done that. Enjoy. Click.

Thanks, Max. =)

Darn, Orpheus' Revenge crashed out on my machine after the initial scene with the sword and title. I'm running on WinXP with DirectX 9.0c, not sure why it gets upset. Drat!

We developed the game using DirectX 9.0b, so there *may* be an issue with that. I'll look into it and get back to you about it.

Same thing happened to me after the opening sequence too. Email me or post with suggestions. thanks

Jay, great site. Will visit it more. Good luck with your XSLT exam!

Another voice chiming in to say I had the same problem too.

After speaking with Dan about it, it's possible the executable was not a release build, and therefore required the SDK to be installed to run. Dan has since recompiled the code and uploaded a new zip file. The new build also uses software vertex processing rather than hardware vertex processing in hopes of avoiding conflicts with some video cards.

So, if you tried to run the game and had problems, sorry for that, and yet thank you kindly for giving it a go. Try fetching the new build (at the same link published) and see if that does the trick for you. =)

uhoh, ignore my last comment, I got it working after re-installing latest MS DirectX. I can now play it :)

Good to hear from you, Tonypa! =)

This application has failed to start becouse the d3dx9_25.dll was not found....blah blah blah

Im running Direct X 9.0c (4.09.0000.0904)

not sure if Im the only one...but thought I would share this one..

the online windows updated dx9 does not have that file....found this DX9 download that has what the game needs....share it with others who have the same problem

Thanks, Shayne. =)

when i open battlefield 2 demo it says that the file "d3dx9_25" was not found. i reinstalled the game like 5 times and i still can't get it to work

Matt - I don't know what Battlefield 2 demo is. Reinstalling the game is not going to provide you with a DirectX 9 file, you will need to reinstall DirectX to get that one.

Unfortunately, I cannot find the website that hosts Orpheus' Revenge. Also, Dan Volpe's website seems to be down. Would there be any way for me to get a copy of the game? The source as well?
I'm a student and am trying to learn how to write a game that looks half-way decent... I have a feeling that the code needed to create Orpheus' Revenge's graphics is way too complex for me, but I'd like to see it anyway just to learn.

Thanks a ton!
