Weekday Escape

DoraIt's a whole new day, and a whole new Weekday Escape, thanks to the tireless efforts of talented escape game developers who I have by no means been keeping locked up in my basement and sustained on a thin nutritious gruel as they produce such wonderful games for free. (Don't look at me like that. I said I haven't. What are you, some sort of cop?) This week! CHOKO-CHAI's trio of curious cats is about to make entire generations of nerds insane with jealousy thanks to one very special acceptance letter. Primera knows you've been eyeing their violins and that is totally not okay dude what the heck. And Amajeto takes a few influences from a popular developer to serve up an escape that calls upon the skills of a thousand grannies.

3 Cats and the School of Witchcraft3 Cats and the School of Witchcraft - YER A KITTEN, HARRY. Three kittens, to be exact, and in this cuddly escape by CHOKO-CHAI, they've gotten a letter by owl telling them to attend the next semester of magic school. What follows is both excessively nerdy and adorable, as their first task is to figure out how to escape from their classroom when the door has vanished. Don't forget that you can use the cats to help by clicking on their icon in certain places!

ViolinViolin - The only violin I know how to play is the tiny sarcastic one between my fingertips, so I may never get out of this nefarious trap by Primera. You, though? There's still hope for you. If you can get around the fact that nearly every cabinet, drawer, and other surface in this room has some sort of coded lock on it, you may be able to puzzle yourself an escape, and then, I don't know, presumably go on the lam as some sort of mad violin thief. Do kids still go on the lam today? I'm hip!

Jigsaw Puzzle Escape 1Jigsaw Puzzle Escape 1 - There's something very TomaTea-sy about the design of this escape by Amajeto, but since when is that a bad thing? I'm inclined to think this time we're locked in my grandmother's living room, giving the abundance of random knickknacks, purple pillows, and prominent jigsaw puzzle, but I think most of us are probably going to be more fixated on the shock of finding a remote control in an escape game that already has the batteries in it.

We love escape games, and our readers love talking about them and sharing hints! How about you? Let us know what you think, ask for clues, or help out other players in the comments below.

3 Cats and the School of Witchcraft Walkthrough:

Don't panic! We can do it! Hip Hip Hurrah!

Items:

Blue Bookmark

Go to the right of the room and climb up the
stairs. The blue bookmark will be laying on
top

Red Bookmark

Open the orange book on the shelf and
flip to the last page. A red bookmark will be inside.

Purple Bookmark

Use the blue bookmark on the mirror at the side of
the room and a purple bookmark will magically appear.

Ring Handle

At the left side of the fireplace you
can zoom in and there will be two ring handles
waiting there for you to take.

Green Bookmark

It is inside the color-coded locked
box behind the far right cabinet.

Magic Powder

It's located inside the far left cabinet.
Once that's open you can grab it.

Key

Once you have traveled to nyangon
you will notice a suspicious looking poster.
Click on it and then click on your cats to
have them claw it off the wall. It will reveal
a key from behing the poster.

Bonus: Click your gray cat again
for an adorable "I did it!"

Chokochai Ball

Check the other side of the wall in
nyangon and the cats will say there is something
not likely about it. Call out your cats and click
on the wall to have one of them kick it. Awesome!
Take the ball that is revealed behind the wall.

Pliers

Lift up the poster that had the key
on it to reveal a pair of pliers underneath.
Sneaky.

Owl Food

Located inside the cabinet with the hat.

Can Opener

Located at the bottom of the Owl's perch.

Broom

Once you have used the Chokochai Ball
to get to the second floor, there will be a broom
stationed on the left side held in place by a big
staple. Use the pliers to pry them off and pick up
the broom.

2nd Key

See how to use your Broom below.

Jelly Beans

See how to use your wand below.

3rd Key

Open the box of Jelly Beans and it will be
inside. Use it to exit the room once the door is revealed.

Philosopher's Stone

See Using unlocking the Center Cabinet below.

Hat

Combine the dots on the exit door once it's revealed to open the glass case the hat is stuck in. It's pretty simple, but here's the solution:

5-side on a die

Locks:

Far Right Cabinet

You will need the ring handles to open
the cabinet as they are missing. Attach them, and
then open the cabinet to find a locked box.

Locked Box

You may have seen numbers inside the colored
books on the shelf. Just correlate those to the numbers
here to unlock the box. To make it clear, the code is:

3864

Far Left Cabinet

You may recall seeing the word "overlay" in tiny
letters written inside the orange book. That's a hint for
what you need to do to open this cabinet. Once you have all
the bookmarks (you should have four) overlay them to reveal
the passcode. Enter the code from the bookmark and insert it
into the slot with the colors to open the cabinet.

Wand Cabinet

To open this cabinet, you will need the key
from the ceiling in nyangon. It is un-retrievable until
that point.

Center Cabinet

See unlocking the Center Cabinet below.

Puzzles:

The Fire

Once you have the Magic Powder you
can use it on the fire in the fireplace to
turn it green. Click on it and it will ask
you where you want to go. Type "nyangon" all
lowercase. If you type it with a capital it
won't work.

Using the Chokochai Ball

Once you have it, go back inside the
school and click the buttons on the statue in the
order received from the owl it's placed on to unlock it.
Once it's unlocked, click the red poster image that matches
it's shape with the ball selected from the ground floor. It
will allow you to gain access to the second floor of
the room you are in.

Key that is too high up to reach

Once you have the broom, go back to nyangon
where your cats are looking up at the ceiling. There
is a faint sparkling thing at the very top. Give the
broom to your smallest cat and he will go up there to
retrieve the key. What a good kitty.

Using the wand

Go to the second floor of the room again,
except this time on the right where there is a painting.
Use your wand on it and it will slide over to reveal an
item behind it. Additionally, you can use your wand on
the glass ball above the fireplace to reveal the unlocking
code for the center cabinet.

I love 3 cats escapes, and the Harry Potter references were cute. But minus points for...

There is a password that you need which just isn't in the English translation. When you click the picture of the woman and she says something, but there's nothing in the text section? She's supposed to tell you the word

nyangon

Enjoying Jigsaw Puzzle Escape. Only have one more drawer to open, but I'm not finding any letter-based clues at all.

For the letter based clue have a closer look at the

Sometimes a location gives more than one item:

Click the middle picture again until it slides down instead of just tilts. The clue is behind the picture.

Anyone figure out how to get the second ending from the cats?

I have the hat but when I walk out the door with it I still get the normal end.

BTW, thanks to Daibhid for that hint. Unsolvable otherwise.

Oh god yes yes yes Weekday Escape! This is what I come here for! (Along with other hidden indie gems, but I digress) This is perfect to pass the time while I wait for others to get ready to leave this morning.

baileydonk October 14, 2015 11:30 AM

Thanks, guys - I swear I clicked on those a million times, but after a hint from you, my click suddenly did something new.

Reply

My problem in Jigsaw is the color drawer. I've only seen the one color-based clue but it is just not working in any interpretation I can think of.

Reply

Oh, duh. Subtle. Never mind. :P

Reply

What a cute little selection of escape games! The 3 Cats game was adorable as always, but definitely wouldn't have been able to solve it without Diabhid C's clue. I still haven't got the second ending, I think there's something buggy going on there. Otherwise it was pretty fun! Violin was short and sweet, and the Jigsaw puzzle was nice and clean!

Chris, I had the EXACT same problem as you... searching high and low for a colour clue, then realised it was in my face the entire time... doh!

Reply
RamblinRob October 14, 2015 1:19 PM replied to Daibhid C

It IS in the English translation. If you walk up the steps and click on the painting it will tell you to talk to the

green fire

and go to

Nyangon

It's just that it has to be all lowercase so it's slightly confusing.

Reply

That was not there this morning, I promise you.

Reply
Coffeeteamix October 14, 2015 3:32 PM

Has anyone found anything other than "normal end" yet for 3 cats?

Reply
Coffeeteamix October 14, 2015 3:53 PM replied to Coffeeteamix

Actually, I skimmed the Japanese BBS on their website using my limited Japanese knowledge and Google Translate and I think the Japanese users haven't found it either...

Reply

I can't get anywhere with these darn cats.

I have four bookmarks and a can opener

but can't make anything else work

overlay where?

Reply
Orient_Tiger October 15, 2015 7:17 AM

Double that. I already overlayed acreenshots, but it still needs to register that I know it somehow.

Reply
Orient_Tiger October 15, 2015 7:19 AM

Oops. Nevermind.

Why is order of stacking them important?

Reply

It probably shouldn't be, but hey.

postmortes October 15, 2015 1:27 PM replied to Chris Ingersoll

Looks like there's been an update to the game: the clue for the fire is now present, the mirror doesn't show all the pictures of your desires any more, the painting on the upper balcony has some text to help you work out what to do, and you get a different ending for leaving with the hat.

In 3Cats, I had a bit of trouble with the Golden Snitch (winged ball):

When trying to put it in the Snitch-shaped hole in the wall, you can't be zoomed in on the hole. While the Snitch is highlighted in your inventory, click the red box in the wide view of the balcony.

Reply

On the panel where you put the code in there is a hint as to the stacking order

Dora, if you locked escape game designers in your basement, they'd find a code on a gum wrapper, use it to unlock the secret compartment in your flower pot, make a key out of a screwdriver, and leave. ;)

Nothing bothers me more than seeing music written incorrectly. Violin was a cute little escape, but the upside down eighth note written with the flag going the wrong way irritates me to no end!!!!

I have one more drawer to open in jigsaw. It's the middle drawer by the tv. I don't know what four colors to use. I feel like I've tried everything!

Reply
Patreon Donator Reka October 19, 2015 7:23 PM replied to RamblinRob

I totally agree, RamblinRob. An escape game should never let you find a crowbar if it isn't prepared for you to use said crowbar to try to pry open anything and everything you encounter. It's fine if the game gives you a reason why it won't let you use the crowbar on, say, the door (e.g. "the deadbolt is too strong" or "you shouldn't damage the door unless you want to pay for it" or whatever other excuse it can come up with), but it shouldn't only let you use the crowbar on the one wooden box the game designer intended it for. (Even worse is when the crowbar mysteriously disappears after you've used it on the wooden crate. Crowbars aren't single-use devices, folks.)

Reply

I'm puzzled, teacher_creature. The middle drawer/shelf needs

a four-letter clue, not a sequence of colors. Did you mean the top drawer/shelf?

There's a hint for that one above.

Try examining things in your inventory.

Specifically, look at the TV remote.

If you really did mean the middle drawer, and what you're missing is a four-letter clue:

Have you looked behind the 3 pictures? All three will move downwards at some point. If the middle one is still at its original height, you haven't wiggled it enough.

Both parts of the clue are needed, i.e. "IPCC" + flame.

Use the paper on a lit candle to reveal the invisible ink.

In 3 Cats, I get that I need to overlay

the bookmarks

but I can't figure out the controls to physically do so. What do I need to click, drag, or whatever, how? Thanks!

Lysana:

Examine one bookmark ("About" when selected), then use the other bookmark on it (click on the zoomed-in bookmark with the other bookmark selected). If it doesn't work, try different bookmarks, or the same two bookmarks in the other order.

This is standard procedure for combining items in your inventory in this genre of game.
