JayVision MuseumArguably some of the best Flash point-and-click, room escape games have come from the Gotmail team of Japan. And within the past 2 weeks they have released 3 new games, but only one of them has an English translation so far. We like to wait for an English version before we feature a review since there is usually some narrative that goes along with this type of game if done well. And the Gotmail team does them exceptionally well.

Enter the Vision Museum. You have been invited by your favorite celebrity to visit the VIP-only trophy room of famous performers at a local museum. You enter and, like most room escape games, you can't get out. Using your point-and-click finger and puzzle-solving prowess, collect items to solve puzzles in this gorgeous graphic adventure.

The game is actually an advergame for Vision Factory, a Japanese management company that promotes Japanese artists and pop stars, such as Amuro Namie and, the boy band, Lead. In fact, the game features a music video by Lead as one of several cut scenes in the game (Thanks Joye!), so if you're on dial-up, or have an aversion to advergames, you may want to pass this one by.

We'll be back with more Gotmail reviews just as soon as the English versions become available.

Reply

Now im lost as usual ..

i have gotten to where the floor fully collapses and there is the little red dot and it says what can i hold up to this --- i took the cell phone back .. im assuming i need the bar code thingy back but i cannot get it anymore .. im just dumb when it comes to these games

Oh my God, this game is so crazy! People who are stuck at that red dot under the floor should read this NY Times article: http://www.nytimes.com/2007/04/01/business/01code.html?_r=1&oref=slogin

Hmm, now I'm stuck at the same place as Jesse and slovw3..

For those of you who are stuck once the floor drops .. this part is weird but

open journal to where you see that white box .. click cell phone .. then click white box .. it downloads a code to your cell phone .. then hold phone up to that sensor to get a mechanical hand

Next

attach phone to projector once up stairs .. watch video .. notice date .. go over to big machine .. put pda in machine .. enter date as password

Keep in mind, passwords appear to be case sensitive

This is a commercially sponsored game for Vision Factory, a Japanese company (I think a management company). It might be associated with avex trax. I recognize the artists, they are all with that company(that's Amuro Namie's face on the right hand side ad, she just released her new single FUNKY TOWN).

Next to finish ...

go down the ladder now that the floor has dropped again .. get your hand back that you used before .. open floor with screwdriver again .. click lever .. use hand to take top part of lever off and push the green button .. notice it opens another shelf .. go over to it you need a password .. you must go into the website that it shows (the journal is the link) .. keep note of the song titles and try them as passwords .. one of them will work .. open door .. see a key use hand to get key .. go back up stairs to the door on the left .. looks like the pda fits .. put it in there but you need another password .. examine the bottle cap you just got .. notice it has a hook or something .. use screw driver to pry it open .. examine the new thing .. there is your password .. enter password .. hit enter .. use key and watch a video which im going to assume is the creators saying good job for making it out

Conclusion .. very very good game .. nothing too difficult the cut scences are very nice too .. one of the few games ive managed to complete without reading spoilers myself =)

The password "on the web" is hard to find,

it follows these characters: キーワード

Reply

spun00 --- That news article about the cell phone is great .. The reason most of us didnt understand that would be its not really used here yet but somewhat popular for the people in asia obviously why then included it in the game

Reply

The one on the web isnt hard to find .. the top portion of the page has a few song clips playing with english titles

Jesse - how about putting everything together into one walkthrough comment, and I'll put it up into the new Walkthrough feature we just rolled out. The new walkthrough section appears above the comment section on every page (if a walkthrough is known to exist on the page).

A link to it will appear on every page in the left-hand sidebar for easy access.

I think thats about it Jay .. btw is irc still working or do you plan on being on aim later ?

Reply

Thanks, Jesse! =)

I've formatted your walkthrough a bit and added it to the walkthrough section above.

Yes, IRC is working and you can find me in there every day. I may be idling and off doing something else, but I generally check in there periodically throughout the day. It works better for me than AIM, since those instant messages tend to distract me more than IRC does (read: I get more work done!). =)

About the ending:

The people in the video are not the creators. They are the four members of the Japanese boy band Lead and they are congratulating you. (Interestingly unlike most boy bands, Lead formed themselves, originally they were street dancers.)

I really like these games, but I have to say that this one seems like one long commercial for teenage pop bands that I've never heard of (and not just because they are Japanese...I wouldn't have heard of them if they were on the MTV top 5 most played videos, either.) I have a built-in aversion to commercial-themed games, and this one seems more crass than most. Not to mention that there is no way to fast-forward through the videos. I was just playing One-Off today and thinking that one of the cool things about Gotmail's games were their replay-ability, but once is enough for me on this one.

Reply

My favorite part of the game is how you have to wait for the game to load, and then you have to wait for an unskippable but useless video to load, and then you have to wait for a cutscene to load. I'm assuming I will also have to wait for the ending to load as well. It's just like a real museum!

Now, I am on dial-up so I knew I was in for some loading. But what is the reasoning, from a programming standpoint, for all the mid-game loading? Why not load the first part of the game, and then load the rest as the player plays through what's already loaded? Is it a bandwidth issue? Is it a limitation of Flash?

Reply

You sound bitter, Neddo.

No, it's not a limitation of Flash, content can be loaded while you're playing the game. The programmers chose an implementation whereby cut scenes are loaded if and when you come to them, which could potentially save them bandwidth if a player never makes it to the cut scenes.

Remember, the game is free, but bandwidth is not.

Reply

Yeah, I guess that makes sense... still, it would be nice for the programmers to code an entirely new, low-fi version of the game for the few people oblivious enough to try and play games over a dial-up connection these days.

Reply

There is way too much marketing embedded in this "game".

Reply

I cant get the bottle cap off. Am I doing something wrong??

sue - use the red arm/hand thingy

Reply
Michael April 5, 2007 9:45 PM

Oh man, the video at the end is the best ending to any game ever. I don't know what they are saying, but they made me feel all special.

Reply

ok um... when i used the screwdriver and went where ever you go after that and it didnt do anything for awhile then i went to look at the spoilers for help then i hear a thumping noise and i looked at the game and there were a gigant pair of fists punching the floor. So does that happen automaticly or what?

Reply

i dont know if its the game or my computer but this game is really slow

Reply

This game is a great technical feat. But despite all the eye-candy, it was more of a hurdle through ads rather than an enjoyable game.

Now, I don't have anything against advergames per se. When I read the review, I expected commercial content - but I also expected the game to be fun, which it was not. I found it to be an aimless, plotless hurdle from one sponsored cutscene to another. :/

Fun in advergames? Yes, like the Honda Grrr game featuring the rabbit with the giant hammer. Games where developers made an effort to include fun factor and replay value, besides commercial content.

Reply

I think that's just a limitation of this type of game, SiamJai. There's really only so much you can expect from any escape-the-room game: Click to find a hidden item, use that item somewhere to find another item, repeat.

That said, I agree with you. This game wasn't fun, and I didn't feel any incentive to even finish it.

Reply
BigFatBob April 6, 2007 9:00 AM

GoMail has to be the greatest graphics I've seen on a shared, free online game site. Their puzzles also are much more logical and easier to resolve then some of the nonsense and complete lack of corelation that some others pass off as point and click. They are also bug free, a huge plus.
The only negative I can say is that the are beginning to repeat the same puzzles and sequences in all their games and it's makes them easier and less unique the more they release.

Reply

For those who have reached the end and don't know what they're saying:

They're quite shocked and they keep going "sugoi" which roughly translates to "wow/great". So yeah, they keep praising you while they clap their hands.

Reply

Haha, I loved the end! This game was really fun and I really loved listening to all the music! <3

Where is the scanner that I use the cell phone on after I've downloaded the video?! I've tried searching all over, but I know I'm missing it somewhere! Thanks.

Reply
TFMurphy April 6, 2007 3:16 PM

It doesn't appear to be *quite* bug free this time, I'm afraid (though I could've possibly missed something, but I doubt it).

If you remove the bottlecap and open it up further with the screwdriver, the screwdriver is automatically discarded. If you then leave the box panel *without* pressing the green button, you are unable to get back into the panel without the screwdriver, and thus cannot open a necessary section.
Needless to say, getting trapped this late into the game is fairly annoying.

Finished in 0.51.38...very nice games from Gotmail. I did the other two you spoke of, White Day and The Scrapper and they are quite well to do without speaking Japanese.
So if you cannot wait for the English version to appear, like me f.e. you can play them right now.
Happy Easter everyone, love from Amsterdam.

Reply

i really enjoyed this game. and i loved the ending. i didnt see it coming.

rough translation: (yeah i know its been done ^^;)
"oh you could do it!"
"whoah awesome!" "coooool"
"awesome! congratulations!"
"you're awesome" (sugoi is basically awesome/cool)
"congratulations"

Reply

Wow. Generally I'm a frequent lurker, but knowing that an escape-the-room game and artists from my preferred genre/language of music are combined? If you hadn't mentioned it, I wouldn't be playing this at midnight out of curiosity. Which is a very good thing. I think. XD

Reply

At the End:

The Guys are from them Japanese band and they congratulate you (in Japanese) for solving the puzzle saying multiple times the word 'sugoi!'which in japanese means 'cool!' or 'great!'

Reply

At the end:

I believe that's the band Lead saying stuff like "congratulations" and "cool, yo!" :) So basically, they're just saying good job for beating the game.

Click on the link in the book that takes you to the vision website. Scroll to the bottom. On the left it says (in Japanese) 'keyword'. Next to it is the keyword, which in my case was 'Drive Alive'. Then use the new 'hand' to get the key for the door - up the ladder - insert PDA into the door, get the code from the bottle cap, enter the code, then unlock the door. Happy gaming!

Its a point and Click room escape (i think). i think its been produced to commemorate 50 years of a coffee blend. I think its quite short, but the Graphics are AMAZING!! (well they just arent graphics, more photos and movies.) they also have two other games in the Jobpico/Shochu Bar series, WHITE DAY and THE SCRAPPER...you can play them without knowing japanese, but they arent up on the /eng site, so you'll have to goto gotmail direct...but it would appear that Gotmail are turning more to the commercially funded games....such a shame. Sorry its so long, but thought i would share what i found.

A lot of people seem to have not liked this game very much, but it was actually my favorite GotMail game. Normally I don't like GotMail games because I find the game play really awkward. The rooms are hard to navigate, there's a lot of pixel hunting, and the puzzles frequently make no physical sense. This game had none of those flaws. The game play was fairly solid. I especially appreciated that there was a theme to the puzzles. Once I figured out one of them, I had some idea how to approach the others. True, the scenario was kind of boring and nonsensical, but I play these games for the puzzles, not the scenarios. Overall, I thought this was a solid game and a fun time.

Love the graphics and most of the problems. Hate commercials though which drags this game down a lot.
I had no problems with downloads as some did.

Awesome graphics, but it's really frustrating to spend so much time on a game (I'm a little slow), only to have to quit. My 'keyword' did not work. Grrrrrr !!!!! (I didn't care for the commercial aspect of the game either).

The 2 words to enter for the first password is Vision Factory. You should be able to move on with the game. None of the other words I use worked

Good Luck.

Whatever the final password is, for the PDA, it is no longer "Funky Town" in any form.

Next time a review clearly states it's an advergame, I'll listen.

Nothing but a 39 minute and 56 second commercial for me. Boo, hiss.

Well, I beat this, along with the majority of the Gotmail games (The White Day remains the one I can't complete)

Help! I am unable to get the proper password for the panel after the floor is lowered.

Drive Alive does not work, nor does WILD/Dr. (which is the video that plays when you pull the site up, I think) or Crazy for You, or Funky Town.

(I have tried variations of the above with no luck either.) Is the game glitching? =(

I should add, that I meant the second time the room is lowered is the point where I got stuck. I read over the walkthrough as well, and I am stuck at number 30.

I am not sure my clarification went through or not. It is the second time the room is lowered that I am stuck at. Item 30 on the walkthrough. I see now in another spoilered comment someone has given me something else to try. Will report back if that works.

Vision Factory isn't it either.

Argh! No luck yet. I'll check back from time to time and post if I figure it out. Walking away from it for now.

For the password issues:

Vision Factory works, but I suggest you back out of the password screen & go back in.

Funky Town works, but only if it is all lowercase.
