DoraThe Next FloorTower defense is another antediluvian of the casual gameplay genres. It's surprisingly hard to bring something other than new window dressing to such a simple concept, since overdoing it leads to Frankenstein's monster; uncooperative, clumsy, trapped inside flaming windmills. The Next Floor, from John Cooney (Rabbit Wants Cake, I Love Traffic), neatly avoids the lurching horror by keeping the concept nice and simple and the action fast and furious.

The Next Floor puts you in the shadowy shoes of.... someone who is in an elevator... somewhere, and desperately defending it against... something that wants to... do... stuff to it? Look, if you want something deep and meaningful, you're in the wrong bloodstained, bullet-ridden corridor. The rest of us are content enough with knowing that the elevators are ours and something else wants them.

Actually, here you're defending the elevator shaft, since the various elevators you can purchase all have their own hit points. When enemies reach you, they'll begin attacking whatever is in front of them. If it's an elevator, and the hit points reach zero, the elevator will fall. Make sure you're not in one when this happens! If it's the elevator shaft, the mammoth life bar at the top of the screen will slowly deplete until nothing remains and you lose the game, forcing a restart.

The interesting mechanic here is the ability to purchase new elevators and switch between them by clicking on one and dragging it over another so they swap position. Since you can arm your elevators however you like with various upgrades, you can fill one with rocket launchers, the other with machine guns, and swap them around as needed. You can also join the fray yourself, by moving left or right with the [A] and [D] keys, and holding down the left mouse button to fire.

Analysis: The game only has one difficulty setting, which isn't actually challenging until late in the game. Even if you're swarmed during a level and barely manage to squeak out a victory with a fraction of health left, the damage to all elevators and the elevator shaft itself is completely repaired between levels. Unfortunately, if you do lose, you have to start the entire game over again.

At only fifteen levels, The Next Floor is fairly short, but it's this tight little package that makes the whole thing such breezy fun to play. Once the cash starts rolling in, you'll find you have more than enough to customize your weaponry to take on even the increasingly dense swarms. The action starts to get particularly heavy in the last half-dozen levels, where multiple types of creeps will appear on the same floor. Large enemies can shield smaller ones from harm, which can make things more than a little hairy when they've all swarmed up to your feet at once.

Funnily enough, the one thing I really felt the game missed out on was using actual elevator music in a game that takes place within elevators. I was really hoping for some bouncy little muzak rendition of "The Girl From Ipanema" played on a synthesizer to make the game feel more cheeky than gritty. As it stands, The Next Floor is a fast-paced, exuberant little title that will easy eat up a coffee break or two without breaking a sweat.

Walkthrough Guide

(Please allow page to fully load for spoiler tags to be functional.)

When I played the game, I thought it was pretty good, so I decided to make a walkthrough. Please note that I can't guarantee that you'll live, part of it depends on where you move your character.

Walkthrough:

Day 1

Stay and fire.
Buy a Turret Gun.

Day 2

Stay and fire.
Buy a second Turret Gun.

Day 3

Walk onto the second floor corridor and drag the elevator down. Hold and fire.
Buy an Elevator and buy a Turret Gun for the second elevator. Upgrade it. Buy a second one for Elevator 2 and upgrade one of the Turret Guns on elevator 1.

Day 4

Stay in the Elevator and switch when the enemies on the other floor begin to get closer to the shaft. Keep switching if needed.
Buy another Elevator and purchase a Machine Gun for Elevator 3.

Day 5

Stay in the Elevator with the lone machine gun (as it is the weakest) and keep switching Elevators when necessary. (From now on, the strategy of switching Elevators is a given, to save me some typing :P)
Purchase a Laser Cannon and another Turret Gun in Elevator 3.

Day 6

Move to either Elevator 1 or 2. Elevator 3 should be powerful enough to be left alone.
Buy a 4th Elevator and purchase 2 Machine Guns for it. Upgrade the Level 1 Turret Gun in Elevator 1.

Day 7

Stay on the 2nd floor from the bottom, and switch the Elevators so that Elevator 3 is in the same hall you are in. There are some tough enemies here, so you'll need the firepower.
Purchase a Laser Cannon for Elevator 1. Upgrade the Level 2 Turret Gun in Elevator 2. Upgrade both Machine Guns and buy a Power Blast Cannon in Elevator 4.

Day 8

Watch the top 2 floors. Keep switching Elevators 3 and 4 between them to help you out.
Purchase a 5th Elevator. Buy a Rocket Launcher and a Turret Gun for it. Then upgrade the Machine Gun in Elevator 3 and upgrade the Level 1 Turret Gun in Elevator 2.

Day 9

Watch floors 2 and 4. They contain those high-health guys you saw before.
Buy a Laser Cannon for Elevator 5 and upgrade it. Buy a Machine Gun for Elevator 2 and upgrade it.

Day 10

Floor 4 will have a new type of enemy, one that's even more resiliant to firepower.
Buy an additional elevator and purchase a Machine Gun and Turret Gun. Upgrade the Machine Gun.

Day 11

Stay one your toes, this will get harder. Otherwise, nothing too special, but you'll need to switch often in this one.
Upgrade as many Laser Cannons as you can, then upgrade your Power Blast Cannon and as many Rocket Launchers as you can. The precise ones don't really matter. Upgrade the Turret Guns in any of the remaining Elevators.

Day 12

In this one, focus on the smaller enemies. Use the Laser Cannons to sweep them all out. This level is much harder, I almost had an Elevator destroyed. After all the smaller enemies are gone, focus on the large ones.
Buy an additional Elevator. Purchase a Laser Cannon for it as well as 2 Rocket Launchers. Upgrade one of the Rocket Launchers.

Day 13

Slightly harder than Day 12, but again, nothing special.
Upgrade both Rocket Launchers in Elevator 7 until they both reach level 3 and the Laser Cannon. Upgrade the Laser Cannon and both Turret Guns in Elevator 1. Upgrade the Machine Gun and the level 2 Turret Gun in Elevator 2. Upgrade the Power Blast Cannon in Elevator 4. Upgrade the Machine Gun in Elevator 3. Upgrade the Turret Gun 3 times in Elevator 3. Upgrade the Turret Gun in Elevator 5 twice. Upgrade the Turret Gun in Elevator 6 twice.

Day 14

Pretty tough. Depending on how you play, it might be a close call.
Upgrade the Laser Cannon in Elevator 1. Upgrade both Machine Guns 3 times in Elevator 4. Upgrade the Laser Cannon in Elevator 5. Upgrade all weapons in Elevator 2 until level 5. Upgrade the Turret Gun and Machine Gun in Elevator 3. Upgrade the Turret Gun in Elevator 6. This is the last level, and we're gonna need to go all out!

Day 15

The toughest level yet. You'll need to keep balancing the Elevators out, between each other. The first floor should be a problem at all, however, the one floor without any of the toughest enemies should be paid close attention so they don't get too close to the shaft. It's not too hard, none of my Elevators suffered any damage.

Congratulations, you just beat The Next Floor!

I felt as if purchasing new elevators drained all your money for the round, so your stuck helping that elevator which has little or no fire power.

Reply

Nice twist on the genre, simple, stylish graphics, but far too easy, I beat it on the first try.

Reply

jmtb02 has got to be my favorite flash game developer. Every game he makes is simply fun and unique more often than not, and this game is no exception.

Reply

This was a fine experience up until the game fed me so many creeps that it started to lag.

On one level in particular it become so bad that I was unable to switch a stronger elevator with a weaker one in time to save my entire shaft from destruction. Not fun.

I get the feeling he loops through every single creep every frame, and I wish this wasn't the case. I can't help but wonder if it would have been more efficient to attach the creeps to one of three parent movieclips (according to type) and move that. That way the only creeps you'd need to loop through would be those in the very front.

I don't know though, this is all purely hypothetical. It's just disappointing to see an otherwise good game ruined at its end because my computer just couldn't handle it.

jmtb02 has done it again...!...but I can't go past level 3...

I seem to have hit a bug. I lost all my elevators, but was able to protect the shaft and finish the day. Now I'm on the purchase screen but the option to buy an elevator fails and I can't start the next day.

Pretty fun up to that point, though.

Reply

Pretty easy, I thought. Only used machine gun, rocket launcher and laser. Nothing ever made it far enough to damage an elevator much less damage the shaft.

Reply

nice game...bug report...on most of the last levels i found my character not able to run toward the elevator...i was stuck on the right side of the screen.

Reply

Tried lots of different things, couldn't get beyond lv 3.

Timed cut scenes tried my patience, you should be able to dismiss them by clicking...

Reply

Interestingly, I only had problems with the first few levels - I failed 2, 3, and 4 all at at least once - tried going for machine guns too soon, when turrets would do the trick.

Generally speaking, the player character (as far as I can tell) levels up a bit during the game, becoming about as powerful as a level 5 turret or so later on. You can pretty much always buy whatever you want and use the remaining money to buy the new elevator, whatever you can afford, and then simply stuff yourself in it to avoid losing. Or, every 10 seconds, rotate the weak elevator with a stronger one.

In the intermediate levels, the pressure cannon (that knocks -all- the creeps back) is fairly effective when coupled with a decent level turret and a machine gun. Rockets are amusing but by the time you can buy them, the laser is much more efficient.

I had 2 level 2 lasers and a level 1 laser in every elevator in the end; one of the things that I would've like to see is a wider range of creeps. John did vary up the types of creep that appear on each floor, which was nice because some creeps had big toughies and others had small masses, but still - all the later creeps, although they have a lot of health, are extremely slow, and thus killable using pretty much any combination of towers.

Given the fact that there is such variation in towers themselves (lasers that do good damage to everyone, rockets that do good damage to the first few, machine guns that fire quickly but have low damage) it would've been nice to see more thought put into the creeps, to make a rock-paper-scissors sort of game where you had to react to bring the right elevator to combat the right type of creep.

Still, a new and interesting type of tower defense; and a good game overall.

Reply

so...frustrating

Got to level 15, but then lagged out when trying to switch elevators, couldn't grab it, and had my stuff ruined by a pile of the weakest monsters. Little man was glitched out on the right side of the screen and couldn't do a thing. Really disappointing, and if it had happened at level six instead of the last level I would have just turned the quality down, but instead I ragequit. Still pretty cool while it lasted.

For anyone having lots of trouble with the initial levels: You can have multiple turrets in one elevator. It's extremely helpful, but I didn't realize it was possible until I reread the comments here several times. Even if you just buy two level one turrets, in some ways that's much more effective than spending more on the machine gun (only for the early levels, of course).

Another bug:

When I paused, and clicked on an elevator, the elevator would no longer be able to shoot or move.

Ruined my game.

Reply

Good game :)

Nice, simple, like the walls slowly getting bloodier. Actually found strategy for shuffling elevators.

[I find myself wondering what just happened]

XD

Reply

Some tips for the game that I found very effective.

1) ALWAYS buy the extra elevator, even if you have to stuff it with the $100 turret gun.
2) Try to fill newly bought elevators with machine guns. Ideally new elevators will have 2 machine guns (perhaps also 1 turret).
3) Once you have enough money, buy the laser, that elevator (coupled with the 2 machine guns or 1 machine gun and 1 turret) should be self sufficient.
4) NEVER upgrade weapons, it's a waste of money until you filled everything.
5) Once you're able to fill all elevators with that combination and have all elevators filled, have a combination of 2 lasers and 1 rocket (not sure if the rocket is more effective, but it sounds nice)

I was able to make it to the final day with 2 lasers and 1 rocket combo. Only the laser was upgraded once.

Good luck!

Reply

The game is good overall, but the controls are a little wonky. I'm not sure why you have to use the mouse to swap elevators, which is hard to do in the heat of play. I'd have preferred to use up/down to move elevators, even if that gave me less control over which went where.

I also ran into a bug where I had NaN.NaN cash, which let me max everything out immediately.

Reply

Here are the first 7 day "walkthroughs". I stopped on Day 8 because I ran into that "$NaN.Nan" infinite money glitch.

Day 1:

Buy 1 turret.

Day 2:

Buy 1 MG for same elevator. Drag that elevator down, it should be able to handle its own floor.

Day 3:

Buy an additional elevator and 2 MGs for it. Stay with the 1turret 1MG elevator and switch floors with it when needed.

Day 4:

Buy an additional elevator and 1turret and 1 MG.

Day 5:

Buy 1 MG for every elevator.

Day 6:

Buy an additional elevator and 2 turrets and 1 laser for it.

Day 7:

Sell a turret in one of the 2MG 1 turret combos and buy a laser. Move the lasered elevators to the top where the big guys come out.

After tens of tries at tower defense mini-games in Free Realms, with only ONE WIN, this elevator game seemed more like watching a flash movie. It was nice to play something so easy for a change. Defeating my nemesis (the medium difficulty Free Realms TD mini-games) was enough tower defense challenge to last me a lifetime.

Reply

Hit the same unlimited money bug. Early on, too. At first, it was fun putting three 5X upgraded lasers on each elevator and watching the game play by itself. But that got old real quick. And I got the glitch every time I tried to play.

Too bad. Looked like fun.

hengehog August 5, 2009 1:28 AM

beat it, it was fun and just the right difficulty. I liked the simplicity of the game, black and white (and gray scale) along with the bright red of the blood

what i found worked the best was one very powerful elevator withe two high level lasers and a rocket launcher and then many other elevators with one laser and two machine guns.

Reply

"Only used machine gun, rocket launcher and laser."

Ok had another go at it to see if I just had faulty memory about how easy it was and this part is a lie. Around lvls 4 up to 6 or maybe 7 I was using the basic turret as well. Still easy though.
Tip:

Aside from the very first time they add a new floor, you pretty much have enough to buy the new elevator plus kit it out just from the income from the level before. What I mean is you don't really need to save up in anticipation of affording the new elevator so spend whatever you got.

My end game was lvl 3 laser, lvl 3 machine gun, & lvl 1 or 2 rocket launcher on each level.

Reply

It has a bug on level 3: elevator falls down, without losing all life before.

Reply

At first I thought the game was too difficult when I couldn't get past the first level with 2 floors... but once I got a "correct" strategy, the game practically played itself:

- I found that early on 3 Lv1 Turrets is not only cheaper than a Lv2 Turret, but much more effective also.

- I didn't upgrade evenly within each elevator; I upgraded only one of the guns, all the way up to level 5. I did, however, upgrade the elevators evenly whenever I could.

- Once I got a Lv5 Turret in each elevator, I would sell one of the other ones and buy Lasers in their places. I think I only wound up upgrading them to Lv3 each though...

- Then, when I had the extra money, I sold the last Lv1 Turrets and replaced them with Rockets.

- Whenever I could, I bought the additional elevator and got the guns up to the same strength as the other ones.

I'm finding it interesting that tons of different strategies work even though many are almost complete opposites of each other.

NeoTiger August 5, 2009 6:22 AM

The game seems to be designed around having specialized elevators to be dragged to the floors where they are most effective. However, the game is equally won with a minimum of strategy:

The combo "1 laser and 2 machine guns in each elevator" takes care of everything because it's self-balancing. If the machine guns' firepower starts lacking behind in swarm spawn rate, the lasers will become more effective, softening up the swarm on a floor for the machine guns to get a grip of the situation again. I beat the final level on my first try with that setup (all machine guns upgraded to 4 and lasers to 2 in each elevator) and without having had to swap any elevators or use my own gun.

Reply

I thought this was too easy, On the last level the badies barely got on the screen before they died. Also no need to use my guy so I just sat and watched for two minutes with no interaction. The first four levels gave me the most trouble. but after that it was a cruise.

Reply

Way too easy. And it's a shame, there's a lot of potential here...

Some changes would be good... dynamic weapon upgrades, purchases and deletions would make the game less of a movie and more of a... well, game. As it stands, the man is superfluous after the first couple of levels and so you just end up sitting there watching the level end. Sure, you could help, but you don't need to as the turrets are highly effective on their own.

Upgrades to the man's weapon, shot frequency and movements would solve this problem... why not also add a purchase option to turn those doorways into stairways which would allow the man to pass from floor to floor without having to use an elevator... and allow him to outfit himself with a bigger weapon and maybe even an additional weapon. Go all out and allow him to switch weapons with the number keys and toss grenades and mines.

The scoring could be made more dynamic by offering bonuses for quick kills and kills by the man (this would promote his involvement more) and scaling the scoring according to how close the monsters are to the elevator shaft..

Eliminating the days format and just sending wave after wave (along with the dynamic weapons editing above) would make the game more frenetic than it is, and

it would also allow you to take advantage of that $100K+ you can't spend on level 15

... wasted potential right there.

This reminds me of another game awhile back, where you had corridors and you could hang different weaponry from the ceiling. There were different techniques involved to defeating enemies, but it had a similar grity and dark style, can't remember what it's name was though.

Reply

Great idea, and an expansion of the tower defense genre. I'm going to have to spend some time playing this.

Reply

One glitch I just realized that I don't see mentioned above, is once my money got to a certain point (I think above $20,000) it just reset again and I ended up with only $6,000.

Played it twice before (hitting the other above mentioned glitches) and this was the first time I saw that one.

Dora,

I mean the interludes w/instructions between waves.

You have to wait for them to finish, I found when replaying it was frustrating waiting for them. I would have preferred to click on them to advance instead of being forced to wait.

Nice job, jmbtb02. You've created another game in another genre that is another great game.

I have 3 lasers on each elevator and I am beating the game with 0 effort. It's pretty fun though for some reason.

great walkthrough, at one point it says upgrade all rockets when i only have one, then i don't have enough money the next levels to buy anything but still win.

Very nice game n.n
only thing i dunno if you guys already know is

You can shoot much more quickly if you rapidly click, even though it says to simply hold the left click

Loved the bgm aswell, who made it and where could i get it?

Reply

Way to difficult if you mess your tactic up and way too easy with the following tactic:

Fill every elevator with Level 1 Turret guns until you can afford rocket launchers (after Level 5). Put one rocket launcher in every elevator, then two, then lasers.

No upgrades needed ever, but it can't hurt.

This way you won't have to fire a single shot yourself after Level 3.

Reply

Amazing game, the only thing I would have done differently is to add a survival mode, to see how much cash and how weapon upgrades you can get!

How to beat the game

on ldayevel 7 buy a turret, upgrade it to level 5 and sell it
you will actually make more money than you invested, repeat until you have lesser cannons level 5 on all elevators
