Plenty of video games take their inspiration from cartoons, it makes perfect sense for them to.
Different people enjoy different artworking styles, but if you already have the characters drawn out for you, or a perfect example of what the cartoon world could look like, then why mess with perfection? If you enjoy the cartoon style of illustration and are looking for a video game that matches up with this, then you might enjoy one of our pick of the best cartoon-themed video games.
DuckTales
If you grew up in the 90's then chances are you'll remember Huey, Dewey, and Louie the loveable but mischievous ducks that were constantly getting into trouble. The cartoon was first televised in 1987 and it was so popular that in 2017 they gave it another go. It was remastered and televised again to great success. What brought this about might surprise you though, it was the remastering of the original NES game that came first. The NES DuckTales game was originally released in 1989 and its remaster came out in 2013. It's more or less a direct copy, with the same brilliant theme tune, but with the graphics polished to the level you'd expect from a 21st century game. It's seriously worth adding to your collection and with prices from as little as $4 on Steam, you almost can't afford not to.
Invaders From the Planet Moolah
Our next choice takes a cartoon animation style and applies it to a totally new cast of characters. Invaders From The Planet Moolah is one of the games from the biggest free online slots library at Vegas Slots Online. This makes it a great choice for beginners because you can play with no deposit, meaning you don't have to wager your own money to see if you enjoy the game. This title takes place on planet Earth but features some otherworldly characters. You'll be coming up against cow aliens from the planet Moolah who have invaded local farms and want to take the cows back with them. Look out for the flying saucer symbols, we've heard they can be lucrative.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
The Ninja Turtles have plenty of diehard fans that would buy any merchandise, but this game is so good it will appeal to everyone.
There have been so many games based on the pizza munching reptiles that it's getting hard to keep count, but the most recent release, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredders Revenge is hard to beat. When you're up against such stiff competition you've got to pull out all of the stops to stand out and whilst there will always be TMNT fans who will gladly part with cash for any bit of Turtle memorabilia, Dotemu, the creators of the game, didn't rely on this. They've created an homage to the very best parts of the cartoon series, bringing in aspects of the original arcade game. If you enjoy cartoon games that nerd out on cartoon history then you'll absolutely love this one.
Roboquest
Our final choice is a game that we've actually featured in our game reviews section before, Roboquest. This game is a brilliant first person shooter game that moves so quickly it genuinely feels like you can't keep up at times. If you rank your hand-eye coordination pretty highly and enjoy the darkly cartoon graphics of Borderlands then you'll love this release. There are loads of options for customization and the range of weapons that you can choose from is staggering. We're particular fans of the flare gun for maximum cartoon effect. It's also worth giving a shoutout to the brilliant original soundtrack. It really moves with the action and adds even more to this robot/cartoon mash-up.
Pix The Cat
This game is a brilliant choice for those who love arcade style games that seem to carry on endlessly. In Pix the Cat you play as the titular character, a cute feline who needs to make his way through increasingly difficult levels. Pix is so set on doing all of this because he's been hatching out ducklings and needs to set them free. Whilst it all sounds very whimsical, the gameplay is anything but. The game starts out gently to let you get used to the controls, but before long becomes increasingly frantic the further through the levels you get. This will really appeal to the old-style arcade gamers who love a challenge and perhaps have a soft spot for cute kittens.
