PatrickRustyardRustyard is the latest wacky puzzler from Nitrome, creators of too many games to mention, including Ice Breaker, The Glassworks, and this game's closest cousin, Onekey. Rustyard has you indirectly leading a junkyard robot with a striking resemblance to Wall-E. You cannot control the movements of the machine, but you can manipulate the environment with its buttons and switches and trolley tracks. Get the robot to the generator and charge up! Bzzzap!

The robot walks left to right automatically, reversing when it hits a wall. You must take into account the timing of his movements, and use the mouse to click on things and move them. Platforms can move the robot around, boxes can be stacked or used as an horizontal vehicle, conveyors can be switched around horizontally, and wheels can be turned — wheels! Can you get the robot to the generator goal and manage to find the spare fuse on the way?

Analysis: Nitrome is known for clever modes of control, tight pixel art and imaginative themes, particularly those of the steampunk variety. Rustyard delivers, though the exploration of gestural controls can backfire, making timed tasks ergonomically challenging rather than mentally challenging — I'm looking at you, fan wheel! Still, they never fail to keep it fresh and well crafted, and despite the make-shift appearance of the characters, that's what you're going to get here.

Are you going to let Sanford and Son out-do your salvaging skills?

Play Rustyard

As soon as I saw the help, I thought of Onekey. Patrick's just made me think of Wall-E just now. Currently at Level 10. The fan wheel steals the show here.

Yes. I just started it, but I think it's really good.

Uh, yeah. I see what you mean about the fan wheels. I can only get the one on level 2 to rotate 1/4 of a turn every 30 seconds. How's that supposed to work?

Reply

I'm on level 4 and can't get through the door (the third one) in the middle of the puzzle. I don't see a button, wheel, lever, way to electrify, timing sequence, nuttin'. Any hints?

Reply

what? 1/4 in 30 seconds? O_o you need to do about 2 full rotationsin each second to have it totally work. try to click at it, then move the mouse farther. (I'm at lvl 9 and I have the batteries at 4, 6 and 8. Still didnt stuck.)

Reply

AAAAAH!!! sorry for double post, butthis stupid lvl 10 is a *****! I almost did it, but sometimes it doesnt react when I spin the fan wheel! Has anyone got some hint to spin them better?

i agree with thinker5555, i can't get past those stupid wheels!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Reply

Why have a fuse on level 3 if there's no way to get in there and pick it up??

Reply

The fan wheel seems... odd. I basically gave up on the game on my first attempt when I absolutely failed to move the darn thing more than a few pixel at a time, no matter how much I swirled around the mouse cursor. Then, after reading mattys and thinker5555s comments I opened the game again, and this time, to my surprise, it worked perfectly on the first try. Don't know whether something got changed server-side in the meantime, or what else could cause that glitch.

Reply

Excellent! It's like Onekey, but without being so mind-numbingly slow! I like it.

Reply

Um, I don't understand the anger at the fan wheels. Click and drag, folks.

@AaronzDad: You CAN get to the fuse, you just have to trigger the green switch to open the green door.

I actually managed to get him off the ground for about 5 seconds.....they need to fix those wheels.

Wall-e meets one key....

Reply
ganondorf champion not logged April 2, 2009 3:35 PM

On my second attempt I got the fans to work just fine...

Reply

Um well the only thing i can think that stops the fan from working properly is if you spin the mouse pointer anti-clockwise, it doesn't work at all if your doing that.

Reply
Anonymous April 2, 2009 4:24 PM

Glich: if you push a extender into another in a certain way one of them gets 'derailed'.

Reply

The fan wheels were a snap. I don't see the problem. How do you get the fuse in lvl 3?

Reply

Yeah Adam, I had the same question.

Joe pointed out the dang green button. I looked for a trigger of some sort but didn't look far enough.

Reply

The guy even looks sort of like the guy in onekey. I got to level 15 with all fuses then got bored. Since it's nitrome I'll finish it eventually.

Reply

Oh and as for level 3

The first robot you encounter and need to put a coin in can go up some make-shift stairs from the blocks later on in the level and hit a green switch by the coin dispenser.

Reply

Looks good but they have this stupid popup style add on the right of the game that pops left over THE TOP OF THE GAME.

Can't tell you how many times as I was trying to scroll the game window I popped into the ad and that sucks.

Mike (guest) April 2, 2009 5:34 PM

Count me in among those for whom the fan wheel just won't turn. I went back and tried a second time (after others said it worked on their second go), but still only a fraction of a turn every few seconds... Wonder what gives? (The wheel to open the gate spun just fine.)

Reply
Dr. Worm April 2, 2009 5:40 PM

I haven't played it quite yet, but from the way it looks it reminds me a bit of Machinarium. Hmm.

OK, now the fuse on level 6 has me stumped.

Any ideas? I can't get that arm down that narrow shaft to pick up the robot and there doesn't seem to be any other way in...

Reply

@AaronzDad

When the arm goes all the way across to the other side without being told to go down, it'll come back again, then forward, and back continuously. Since it pauses at either end, after one 'lap' you get make it pick you up.

Reply
Torakoun April 2, 2009 6:51 PM

I am quite firmly stuck on 24. I can't press the buttons fast enough. Any suggestions?

Reply
Billy_Kane April 2, 2009 7:24 PM

Does anyone know how to get the fuse in 18? I tried using the box but you can't move it upward while the robot is on top of it.

Reply

If I were a proficient texter and was able to turn this wheel fast, maybe I could get past level 2. But, good one, developers... make it so hard for the average person to get through the second level, that they won't play your stupid game. I've tried this section at least 35 times. I got him up once, but not up the second fan. And now my hand is cramping. Wow! What a great game. It's like Wall-E, if Wall-E were lying in a dump.

aNDY the aNON April 2, 2009 7:58 PM

Okay for all with problems:

The Fan-Wheel-Things

click and hold on the wheel, and then drag your mouse in a circle around the wheel really, REALLY fast

For that ANNOYING claw-part of lvl. 6
-READ WHOLE THING FIRST-

First

you have to pull up on that small slider platform really fast when the robot has just stepped on it. DONT PULL IT ALL THE WAY UP YET! stop the block when it is halfway up the block to its left. it makes sense when you see it. should be like this:

X-
XX
-X

- is empty space, X is block. I know it doesn't really help that much. this should trap the bot, giving you time to get ready for the next part

Next you have to

PAY ATTENTION TO TIMING. push the right button for the claw-thing, then pull the sliding platform up the rest of the way, then really fast go to the down button for the claw thing and click it right before the bot is underneath

That should pull the bot up to the next part of the level.

The tricky fuse in lvl. 6
And I quote Dom...

"When the arm goes all the way across to the other side without being told to go down, it'll come back again, then forward, and back continuously. Since it pauses at either end, after one 'lap' you get make it pick you up."

One problem, though. After you get the fuse,

HOW DO YOU GET BACK OUT OF THERE?

--I hope Dom doesn't mind I'm copying him - Kudos to you Dom ^U^

Reply

Two things I feel are important.

1. This robot looks about as little like Wall-E as a small rusty robot can possibly look.

2. His face is a plug! And he starts generators by plugging his face into them! How great is that? Discuss.

Billy_Kane April 2, 2009 8:38 PM

Nvm, power of posting

@Torakoun:

Have both the Red and Yellow on the same screen. Press the Red button until he goes through. Then press the Yellow put. Hold down the button and scroll to the right at the same time, to get the Green button on the screen. Release the button when he gets through. Press the Green button to let him get through.

Thanks for the help with level 6!

I never thought to try

just letting the arm run back and forth then click when it pauses at the start position again

to get the robot back out again...

You can throw the crates back up the chute there and catch 'em up top. It takes timing and lots of tries but once you get the hang of it you won't be too annoyed. Hold the crate by the bottom edge, line it up along the wall below the glass section there, then flick it up
It's best to have the arm moving back and forth while you're trying this so it's out of your way

all you need

are three crates to build steps - be careful when you drop them that you put 'em along the left wall and you don't drop 'em on the robot - he can't jump then.

I'm only up to level seven but I'm liking this game so far

Reply

Level 2 absolutely ruins the game for me. It seem as if I can never maintain it spinning for long enough to propel the robot high enough to reach the next part of the stage. I'm using the Mac Mighty Mouse, if that makes a difference.

Reply

I find the fan wheels seem to spin a little better when I move the cursor in a larger circle rather than immediately around the wheel itself.

I make a circle about four or six inches in diameter (ten or so cm's) which appears to be most effective.

Yeah, they're a pain.

Reply

I beat level two, but only when I moved my mousepad to an optimal position and tried for a good ten minutes. -___-
I appreciate Nitrome's difficulty, but that seems to be just a pain to me.

Reply

I feel like I'm being punished for using a trackpad, and yes I know I should have a mouse, but when I'm breaking a sweat trying to spin a wheel the gaming seems a little less than casual.

Reply

I need some help on LEVEL 6. I can get the claw to snatch the robot up, but then it just let's go. :\

And help on how to drop it [the robot] into the spot where the fuse is?

Reply

WHEELS TRY:
Like ganondorf said, on second relaunch/reload the wheels works better.

Reply

I beat it!!! I loved one key and I loved this game just as much. I hope Nitrome makes more games like this one!

JNinjaz April 3, 2009 3:02 PM

Wow... this is a first for me. I'm actually ahead of the jig comments in a nitrome game :0

Im on level 23, and nothing seems to be a problem for me. Everything is completely managable, although i do wish some of the wheels were levers instead, but you would loose some of the challenge of getting some of the fuses.

The instructions are classic nitrome though, because it stops putting the little hints in by level 10 and then adds a ton of new elements, or it demonstrates and element and doesnt come back to it for most of the game.

I think one of the worst parts is the "mouse over the edge of the screen to scroll" feature. When i need my mouse to do other things, i dont have time to scroll with it. There are parts of the game where i need to quickly move from one extreem edge of the screen to the other, and i cant do anything with the mouse while its scrolling. Nitrome reallys needs to add another option of using the arrow keys or wasd to controll the scrolling.

Overall, I find it pretty simple when you figure out what the different bots and other elements are all about. 5/5

Reply
JNinjaz April 3, 2009 3:36 PM

Sorry for the double post, but i just finished the game.

the ending is very anticlimatic, it just says you win, your score, and then shows the robot with his girlfirend

which made me laugh because she is just like him, but white and her face is a socket XP

Reply

JNinjaz: You can control the scrolling with WASD or the arrow keys.

Reply

Well, I've now passed all the levels with every single battery. This game is A LOT like Onekey, except you control the elements one at a time instead of all at once. Not too hard, except maybe the second to last level.

Reply
JNinjaz April 3, 2009 4:33 PM

WHAT!?!?! i was not informed of this! I feel soo stupid now...

you still cannot disable mouse scrolling though.

Reply

I didnt get the fuses, but I finished. The hardest level for me was level 10. because my mouse is not the best...

Reply
annomnymous April 4, 2009 7:40 AM

For level 6 battery

Take all 4 boxes out and stack them in 2s next to the bit where the claw can come down.
Get the robot trapped In there and then pull him up with the claw and drop him on the fuse.
Then take boxes and trap him at the side, then you pick him up with the claw and drop him.

I have collected the first 14 fuses and am on level 15. Level 15 is glitched. Some of the conveyor belts don't turn in the other direction when I move the switches.

Reply

Does anything happen when you collect all of the energy capsule things? I have all of them except those from levels 12, 17, and 18. Has anyone gotten them all?

MA

Reply
JNinjaz April 4, 2009 4:52 PM

Some of the conveyor belts in level 15 aren't supposed to move. It is solvable. my recomendation is to

set everything up before you release the bot and then let him go. Make sure you know which belts switch and which do not, find all the obstacles, and map out a path before you go.

Reply

Yes, MAS, I've gotten them all, and no, they do NOTHING. Kinda like the gems in Onekey.

How can you get that fuse on lv 2?

Reply

I finally just beat the game with all fuses. This one was pretty fun, very inventive. :)

Only problem I have with this - and with the Ice breaker game - is the camera controls. In a full-screen game, using the edges to scroll is fine, but not here - especially not when the music and pause buttons are within that region.

An option to disable the edge scrolling would be much appreciated.

Level ten hurt my arm after spinning them all. I did however get it on my first try, but lost some health (2/3 left) when trying to get the fuse. I didn't lose anymore health after that.

Reply

It's a good game, I WAS enjoying it, but now I'm on level ten and the fan wheels simply WONT WORK. I had the same problem on level 2, but solved it by refreshing the game (thanks to members on here for advice on that). But now not even this works, and I can't do level 10. :(

Anyone any advice? Thanks.

Sorry, power of posting, it's fine now. To solve it, I right-clicked, went into settings, and unchecked the box about hardware acceleration, and this seemed to do the trick. Anyone having this problem may wish to try that.

I'm still stuck on how to collect fuse in level 27. It's very hard to control that auto-door. To anyone who have collected all fuses, would you mind telling me what will happen if you collect them all.

I have a tip for collecting fuses in some levels
[Because I'm not a member, I will post at almost the bottom of my comment not to spoil someone who doesn't.]

For level 2

There is a movable box in Fan and Spike area. So move it [You have to open the wheel gate before] and hold the mouse button to make the way for the robot to grab it.

So any questions about how to get fuse in any level? You can post to ask.

I struggled like mad with the fans on level two. I love nitrome games but it really did my head (and wrist) in!

I'm a mac user and was using safari. For some strange reason I had a brainwive and tried camino (Usually poor with flash as it's often blocky) but it worked a treat!! The fans turned so easily!

Try it, I hope it works for you ;o)

I'm stuck on the fuse on 18 as well. I've finished every other level and fuse. Any hints?

Reply

If Onekey didn't annoy me enough, this certainly did.

I'm at level... 3, if I remember correctly, and I quit. Not gave up, but quit. I don't have this kind of patience. Now, Onekey was still pretty look at it, I suppose, and it was one-of-a-kind back then. So I wanted to prove to myself that I could do it.

And I did.

This, however, is different. It's theme is, although unique and funny, not nearly as 'pretty' or 'happy' as Onekey, and slighty depressing (for my taste). It seems to go much slower than in Onekey, and those weels make me mad, honestly. First I turned the wrong way, then it doesn't register my mouse circles... And ugh!

If it's like Onekey, I suppose 4/5 would do. But because of earlier mentioned annoyances, I rate this a 3/5. Nitrome could've done much better. (Mainly, I just dont like the junkyard thing with the slowly moving figure.)

For the fan wheel problems,

When I tried zooming in on the game like I normally do with nitrome games, the wheels just wouldn't work, so I had to zoom out for it to work.

hope this helps.

I really, really love the animation, background and music. Looks a little like Amanita Design's Machinarium. I'm at level 16. This is way harder than I thought it would be, though. I only try for the fuses if they look easy enough. It's hard enough to just get through each level.

If anyone is still playing, I'm up for some mutual help.

Reply

YAY! I finally completed the game with all the fuses. This was my favorite Nitrome game until Parasite (though Droplets is darn good, too). It's hard, no doubt. And on some levels, the screen-scrolling is problematic enough to be considered a design flaw rather than adding to the challenge.

Nevertheless, its charms redeem its flaws. The varied elements, music, art and puzzle aspects are terrific. Cheers to the creators.

The trick to the Fan wheals is to click and hold, have on hand grip the mousepad down and the other spin the wheel. Anoter Reminder is to not do it too fast becuase you might get tired and let go of it too early. Also

Fan Wheels GTFO after Level 10 i think

But its achually a Very good game. Nitrome needs to make a squel, It made me feal like some AI that runed a Abanden junkyard that made stuff out of bots & things
