After strange events force you into a couple weeks' absence from New Heart High School in Toyko, you decide it is time to head back to school and try to get life back in order. But when you haven't gone so far as just outside of your house and your best friend Melanie since middle school seems to be shyly hiding a dark secret from you, you start to wonder if something has gone horribly astray. It doesn't help matters when a shape with glaring red eyes suddenly appears in the gloomy dark sky behind her, then vanishes just as quickly. At first you dismiss it as an artefact of your sleep-deprived consciousness, but upon a second encounter you begin to wonder if it might be a harbinger of things to come.
Phantom Reverse is merely the first chapter in a series of games by author JackAstral, and if his previous work is anything to judge by, it will be no less exciting. The game is controlled exclusively using the mouse, clicking to advance dialogue and select options when prompted. A couple of minor qualms I had with the game included the lack of real interaction/influence on the part of the story. Choices are superficial, but this is true of many visual novel type games. The characters in the images also appear flat in many cases, and there's something more than paranormal about every character staring out at the viewer rather than each other. In any case, Phantom Reverse is certainly a thrilling introduction to a series as vividly illustrated by its words as its pictures, and we can't wait to see more.
