MikeMorbid 2: The CureHappy October! I can't be sure what October means to you, but in my part of the world, October means dressing up as monsters and pop culture icons, committing petty vandalism, and horror-themed casual games. It's nice to be able to don the mantle of horror during Halloween, because in most countries that celebrate it, we know that the masquerade will end and we can go back to our safe, ordinary lives. But what if the supernatural horror we associate with Halloween manifested during a truly horrific time, like, say, the Black Plague? That was the premise of Morbid, a point-and-click horror title from Pastel Games that we reviewed last year. Now comes the sequel, Morbid 2: The Cure, just in time for everyone's favorite spooky holiday.

Point-and-click fans should know how the game works: Click on scenery to navigate, items to collect, and people to converse. Combine items with people, scenery, or other items to solve puzzles and advance the story. For Morbid 1, we complained that the worst part of the game was the navigation, for it was never clear where you needed to click to move. While Morbid 2 is a little better in this regard, there are still paths that are too obscure to be easily found. Navigation remains the most frustrating part of the series.

Despite this one problem, there is a lot that Morbid 2 does well. The puzzles, when they are not obscured by navigation issues, are mostly intuitive and, except for one very silly puzzle involving a spider web, logical. While the story is intriguing, the end of the game might upset some. Depending on how you look at it, it's either a knife in the gut, or one heck of a cliffhanger.

Play both games in the Morbid series:

The best part of the series remains the atmosphere. The black-and-white art and subtle ambient sounds are creepy and evocative. There are no jump scares or shocking gore, just a mood of well-crafted, eerie desolation. If you can get over the wonky navigation, Morbid 2 is a fine bit of quick, atmospheric spookiness, just in time for Halloween.

Hmmm.. Welp, I'm stuck.

I have the two parchments that you start with, the axe, the drum, the witch's list of items, the drumstick, the mandrake, the crab apple, and the strong spider web..

Now I am not quite sure what to do..

Reply
KamenZero October 12, 2010 1:30 PM

Aha, I've found what to do next.

You can beat on the drum to drive away the demon spider thingy

Reply

Where did you find the

mandrake?

I have looked far and wide :/

(mostly wide)

Reply

You can find the Mandrake by

Placing the dog by the hanging post with the skeleton and the crow

Reply

Slippy:

Hint 1

You need to buy the dog, so look for a coin.

Hint 2

Look on ledges for the coin. Once you have the dog, look for a spot to dig.

Reply

I have not been able to find the

mandrake (other than the picture of one on the column in the church)

but I have found

the unicorn horn

Reply

Okay finished, finally.

Finding the

mandrake:

There's a place in the game that seems to have something, but you can't get to it without a little help...

Reply

In order to find the mandrake:

You need to use the dog on some bones

Now, someone wanna tell me

where to find the drum?

Reply

I have the

coin

where does one

buy a dog?

The

drum is kinda hard to find. Along one of the roads, you can just see some feet on the left side of the screen. Click on them to find a dead man with a drum. But you also need the drumstick...

which is hanging in the witches house

Reply

Drum is

in the witch's house

Reply

where do you find the unicorn horn?

Beat it, but I think I got the "bad ending". Really anticlimactic, just a screen telling me about my fate.

Reply
vederblich October 12, 2010 3:12 PM

Yes, navigation is still tricky (even if it's way better than the prequel). You just have to watch for the hand everywhere, and click click click. When you think you've found all the hotspots, there's probably two more.
Puzzle solving was extremely easy on this one. Too easy! Got through this, no hints, in quite a short time (and I usually need a hundred hints).

And SonicLover, I think there only is one ending. The bad one. Muahaha!

Reply

I have the drum and drumstick, but how do you use them together? Clicking one then the other seems to do nothing.

Reply

Never mind, power of posting. For those who are curious,

click the drumstick, then click on the drum repeatedly to hit the drum

Reply
mezzanote October 12, 2010 3:41 PM

For those like me who struggled to find that coin...

in the monastary, through the first locked door, up the ladder, and click on the window.

Reply

Actually, there's a bad ending and a worse ending.

About the mandrake root...there is logic to where you find it....mandrake root lore in spoilers below:

It was a common folklore in some countries that mandrake would only grow where the semen of a hanged man had dripped on to the ground; this would appear to be the reason for the methods employed by the alchemists who "projected human seed into animal earth". In Germany, the plant is known as the Alraune: the novel (later adapted as a film) Alraune by Hanns Heinz Ewers is based on a soulless woman conceived from a hanged man's semen, the title referring to this myth of the Mandrake's origins.

I got an ending that was several screens long, although it was still pretty bleak.

Hints:
using the drum:

Drag and drop the drumstick onto the drum in your inventory bar. To it a bunch of time to scare off the spider.

Unicorn horn:

Behind the pillar the spider was guarding is a pit of dead things. The creature (kinda looked like a rhino to me) is the 'unicorn'. Take It's horn.

Last scene:

The axe wont hurt the vampire. You have to capture him. Use the 'strong spider web', which can be obtained by using the axe on the large web at the end of the 'village' road (the village is where you can buy the dog)

Reply

Kamenzero,
After beating on the drum, then what? Nothing I have

(2 parchments, list, drum + stick, spiderweb, crabapple, mandrake, axe) works on the boar/dead hunters.

Nothing clickable either...

Reply

I'm getting all the hard clues right and struggling with the easy ones. Helps to know your myths, tales, and esoterica.

Reply

where do you find the unicorn horn?

Reply

feeling a trifle silly - i can't find the

witch...i HAVE got a mandrake root, spider web and an axe however, just can't find the witch

what am i missing? please help a lost traveller...

Dear Pastel Games,
I am a huge fan of your work - you are true masters of this genre, the art work is beautiful, the atmospheres are perfect. I love the challenges I face with your games.

But please, please, just once, maybe could you guys make something with a little sunshine? You know, use your mastery and artistry to create something...you know...(oh man, dare I say it?) fun.

Why so serious all the time?

Sincerely yours,

Mebaroo

Much better navigation than the previous game, though many areas were a swine to find. Especially

the Unicorn horn area

Any news on a second ending??

Reply

@mebaroo
Halloween is coming up. I agree with your plea, but tis the season to give them a pass.

Reply

Sigh - double post...

Second ending is more obvious that you might expect.

You have some remaining items, what could you use 'em on??

Hope we don't end up waiting a year for the continuation!

What's with the tiny smurf figure in the book?

Found a bug that makes the game impossible to complete. If you give the witch items as you get them (meaning not all at once) she'll accept them, but giving her the final item doesn't net you a potion, merely a 'bring me the final item' dialogue. I gave her the apple and mandrake root, then went and got the horn, and am now unable to complete the game. Oh well.

Reply

Wow, I was suprised to say the least that Pastel and Mateusz created a sequel to the excellently morbid "Morbid" lol. I finished the game it is quite shocking in the twist ending. Plus for those you don't know, you have to have a certain item before entering the final room if you want to get the "somewhat" good ending even if it has an escpecially morbid twist to it. Can' wait for the 3rd one!

Reply

Fun game, even though navigation was awful. I'm just glad there are so many posts describing where items are - even when I thought I'd explored everywhere, I hadn't. And I'd read Mike's warning that this would be the case!

That bit with the spider web was CHEAP. >:[ I had to completely do the game over again just for that! A stinkin' spider web?!

Reply

i found an ending were you tie that vampire with the spider web and you burn the church and then it says everything is lost, to be continued...

So what if you take the

cure to the fisherman

as he requests? Is that possible? Does it mean you are able to

get across and escape?

A little bit of unicorn lore:

It's thought that the legend of the unicorn originated from sightings of rhinoceroses.

Anyone who's used the drum but still can't find the unicorn horn might want to check that spoiler out.

Reply

@Kate

I've tried to

Give him the elixir but he won't take it. I guess there is no "good" ending :(

Question: So the rhinoceros may be the source of legends of unicorns. And the mandrake's location makes sense considering mythology. Anything special about the crab apple though, or why the spider is scared away by a drum? What legends involve that?

Reply

When is the 3rd part coming?

Reply

i think there's no a happy ending.. seriously. since

you'll need to enter the dormitory and explore the dead. then the vampire came. you'll need to talk to him in order to leave the room, but when you did, it says everything was destroyed and you came too late. :(

anybody can find the cure in the monastery?

Reply

looks like if

one begin collecting items for the witch BEFORE talking to the Monk, he becomes untalkable

and the game becomes impassable in this case.. am I right?
