PsychotronicMiracle WitchWe'll try to have a more thorough review up soon, but we wanted to tell you right away about a cool new action game from Nigoro, the authors of Death Village and Rose & Camellia. This is Miracle Witch, the story of cute little witch Polfe and her quest to defeat the evil king Yeah Walusa, which is the best name for an evil king ever. A stunning and ambitious game from this always entertaining Japanese developer.

It plays a little like Merlin's Revenge, or perhaps a really fast-paced, mouse-controlled Legend of Zelda. There's a huge island to explore, rife with secrets and hostile monsters. Certain objects, when found, can open up caves and other parts of the island, leading to even more powerful treasures, and so on.

Control Polfe by just moving the mouse on-screen wherever you'd like her to go, and let forth a stream of deadly magic power by holding the mouse button. Try not to blunder right into the monsters—that's a good way to die quickly. Instead, approach them cautiously and start shooting well before they get within head-cracking range. Also, it's probably best to just avoid the sea serpents entirely, at least at first. You'll see what I mean.

There is another control scheme as well, which lets you move only when you click the mouse button. Your spells are then activated by double-clicking. Less frantic that way, but more clicking required. Switch to this control method by pressing the [space] bar.

Switch between your attack magic spells (once you've found them) by clicking on them from the display at the bottom of the screen. Do the same for more benign items like keys and magic stones. This can be counter-intuitive, since your hero also moves whenever you try to point at anything, but just whip the pointer right down to the menu, and Polfe will stop in her tracks and wait. Other icons in the lower right control the visual quality, sound, and volume. The little purple orb restarts the game.

Fair warning: this game is hard, and it will punish you mercilessly at the slightest mis-step. Here are a few basic tips for survival:

- Save all the time. Any time you find a treasure, just save the game right away. It's the icon in the lower-right that says "SAVE". You'll want to make a practice of clicking on that. It is your new best friend. If you don't save, and some nasty thing kills you, which will happen lots, you'll go right back to the title screen with all the progress you've made missing utterly from your life.

- Heal. Any time you are outside, you can heal your wounds by standing still for a few seconds. This doesn't work in caves or buildings, and it can't save you if something kills you in one hit, but it's extremely helpful at all other times.

- Destroy everything. Many secret chests and locations are revealed (indicated by a musical tone) if you blow up the right bad guy or piece of the environment. If you hear a metallic tinging sound when you attack something, it means you'll probably need to come back later with a different weapon and blast it to pieces. Also, enemies will randomly drop gems that power up your magical strength, so it pays to make slaughter a part of your regular routine.

This is a pretty involved game, and it can be difficult to find where to go next sometimes, so help each other in the comments (using spoiler tags, of course). Have fun!

Walkthrough

First 3 spells

First you want to grab the boots which is north of the starting position along the west wall. After that head east across the bridge and find a double gray circle on the ground. The fire spell is here. Next go back to the beginning and find a tree along a wall and burn it. Go into the cave and kill the guards for a key. Take the key north of the starting position to the tower and go inside. Work your way up, kill the stone head on the ground on 3rd floor to get ice book. Make sure to kill the first and 4th tower mobs to get items.

The Cave

Go to the location north of the double gray circles and start killing mobs randomly 3 things can happen. 1) Killing blue knights will drop the stone wall blocking the bridge. 2) Kobolds will spawn a treasure increasing fire power 3)Mobs by sea shore will give another treasure. Also if you walk into the grave a water giant will spawn. Seems immune to all spells.
After doing these things, head across the bridge and grab the treasure to the south. Enter the cave and head west. You will find a miniature zone with only a grave, kill the grave with ice. Go back west and head immediately north through the devils and grab the treasure for the lightning spell. Now head as north as you can go and you will find a grave along the northmost wall surrounded by 3 devils. Grave is killable, but can't find its purpose.

The Ocean

Head back to the water giant and use lightning on it. He appears to be immune, but his hp is just ridiculously high that it doesn't show it being hurt at first. Be persistent. Once giant dies the water level will drop. Now head back to the starting area, head toward the bridge but instead of walking across head north. There is a slight ramp into the dirt "used to be lake" with a ice treasure. Pick it up and the head to the obvious cliff drop in the double gray circle zone. Once down head west and go inside the cave. Head north and pick up the hp item.
Continued once I get further...

Ok, I have got 4 spells, a key and a purple orb, stuck, don't know what to do.

Where did you get the four spells from? I have 2 spells, purple orb

and I'm trying to get the rod that's in the building, but I don't know how to move the rocks

I have got only 2 spells and no items. I don't know where can i go.
And I am not strong enough to destroy the giant.

Reply

This game suffers from a lack of good game design. Mouse only controll is fine of you do it right, which this game does not. And either finding what to do is insanely hard after a certna point or the programmer just didn't put it into the game. Overall a lousy game that could and should have been much, much better.

Jaywalkar how did you get 4 spells? I got stuck after getting the Flame Tome.

There is a tree you can burn down near the first screen on a rock wall. Use your fire spell.
At the moment I have tried everything, killing everything I can and firing away at every tree, rock, headstone. I am totally stumped.

Alex: What rod are you talking about, do you mean the chest under the tree roots?

Coolbrain: Giant?? Do you mean the guy with the long spear??

jaywalkar: no. if you destroy the graveyard in the near from the rocks, then a blue giant appears in the sea and cast rocks.

OK, found the water giant. Can't seem to hurt him. I am wandering if you need to try and do something with his rocks...

Wait, forget that last comment, I just pummeled him with lightning and killed him, now there is no more water surrounding the island.

Reply

Pummel him with lightning? He's immune. How did you do it?

Reply

jaywalkar, how did you kill the giant? He's immune to lightning, unless you have something I don't.

Reply

Tip on the giant...

At first I had trouble killing him also, so I ran around getting my crystal power maxed out. I'm not convinced this made a difference, because what ended up happening was I attacked him for a while with what looked like no effect (except for the fact that once I had lightning I no longer heard the metallic sound when I attacked). Finally, after staying at full HP for a long time his meter began to drop really rapidly and I killed him very quickly after that. I used fire so I don't think the element matters.

Reply

I just kept dodging his rocks and the I hit him with lightning. First time I tried lightning it did nothing, but for some reason it started to work after a while. Not sure why. Maybe you have to hit him with everything in a certain order, if so I can't remember the order.

Reply

I've got all 4 spells, the tower key and the purple orb. I've got all the equipment too. Am I missing something for killing the giant?

Reply
jaywalkar May 12, 2009 9:14 AM

So I get all 3 orbs and put them in place, nothing happens. This game can be a bit frustrating ay.

Reply

This *looks* like my kind of a game. I played Zelda to death and Merlin's revenge were great (at least 1 and 2 were).

This one.. I dunno. I can't say I'm a fan of the control scheme and the combat system is horribly repetitive. There's no room for finesse, you are either running (clumsily) or acting as a stationary cannon. And since the combat isn't exactly fun (at least in the beginning stages), respawning enemies are a nuisance. Finally, I don't like how most of the time killing enemies gives you absolutely no reward. You kill a difficult baddie who should be far above your abilities and you get.. nothing. Huh.

But I'm willing to give it a chance. Btw, too bad the save button is so obligatory, I would have preferred the checkpoint system.

Reply

Do you need 3 orbs for killing the giant?

Reply

Blah blah blah! So it's hard to figure out what to do and the control scheme takes a little getting used to. It's still a cool game. I'm looking forward to Miracle Witch 2! (Definitely give us WASD movement on that one though guys, ok?)

Oh and btw, SPACE seems to freeze the witch, so perhaps this might be useful when you want to fiddle with the items/spells and don't want the witch to follow the cursor.

Now I'm stuck with all orbs lit and nowhere to go :(

Killing the giant...

I had trouble, then got real close and shot his face with lightning. Note you may need some of the powerup items which increase your shot distance

Now have 3 orbs lit and nowhere to go :(

Control scheme is an interesting idea, but awful. Optional WASD+M and number/weapon binding would make the game far more playable, as maneuvering and switching spells is a royal pain midcombat.

On top of the awful controls, all enemies respawn as soon as their spawn point is just a bit further than off screen, then they are free to roam. This is seriously irritating considering how many times you are required to destroy a certain enemy to unlock something. Or when you are forced to retreat, kill the enemy and come back to find another one already waiting for you.

Even then the ridiculous respawns MIGHT have been forgivable if it weren't for the point that you gain no experience from them. No, the only thing you might get is those little red power-up gems. Of course, you have an upper limit on those, AND you lose one every time you get hit. The drop rate of these gems is pretty low too, so if you take damage in battle and lose even one of them it is often better to just reload your last save then slog through another 15 enemies to find another one. Honestly, with the number of enemies with ranged attacks, the limited range of your own attacks and the awkward mouse controls, I'd find myself losing 3 gems for every one that I found.

That's it, I have had enough of this game. I've been shooting the water giant for 20 minutes, and it just won't die.
All in all, this game is poorly designed. Its controls, saving, kill-reward system are all among the worst I've ever seen.

Reply

Figured out the giant.

So, to spawn the Giant, you have to destroy the grave by the water. To damage him, you have to destroy a second grave.

Get the Lightning Tome, then head into the cave west of the Giant and go to graveyard inside, to the North. Destroy the lone, Northernmost grave in with Lightning, and the Water Giant becomes vulnerable.

As stated, it still takes a bit of work to reduce the Giant's health enough to see the damage you're doing, but at least you stop hearing the metallic clang of failure once you get rid of that second grave.

Reply
Brian Ackermann May 12, 2009 12:26 PM

Ha!

I found out how to remove the roots on that one box.

Exit the building, and go around behind it. There's a hidden door in the center of the back of the building, just head south, enter the room, kill the knight, and 'fire' the tree and the root.

Now you can head back around front, and get the 'Staff' out of the chest...

I now have all the items except for the 'Castle Key'

sandsnake May 12, 2009 12:26 PM

To kill the giant AND clarification on the walkthrough -

The grave along the northern wall in the cave is what makes the giant vulnerable. I tried everything and found the grave from the walkthrough - killed it, went back, and down he goes.

Ok to defeat the Water Giant

you need to first destroy the top grave in the graveyard in the cave to the left of it. That makes it change colour and killable

Reply
Brian Ackermann May 12, 2009 1:30 PM

I'm in exactly the same boat at Bobby.

I speculate that the stones have something to do with the Dragon...but I can't figure out what for the life of me.

Maybe if I had full magic...but the only way I can get crystals now is to kill Golems, and I am losing them just as fast as I get them (if not faster)

Any other ideas?

I can't find out what to do with the rocks? I feel completely clueless here.

Reply

Where is the third gem? I have the blue and the purple one, and looked everywhere

Reply

I was in a cave and standing still did heal me, maybe you didn't wait quite long enough or you have to have certain items. you heal faster outside.
Items I had at the time:

I had a new cloak, pants, shoes and gloves. Three large flames and four smaller ones. Plus I had found one life potion.

I can't find the entrance to the area where the king is.

If I go in any cave or building I can see the area, but I can't find any sort of entrance. I searched every room and went around the entire area that is now dry and found no entrance on any of the walls, though it could probably be easily missed.

Anyone found it?
Tips:

Kill everything in an area twice. You may have missed an enemy that was not there before. It also helps if you walk to at least most of the edges so that in confined spaces that one enemy will appear. such as in the blue doored tower there was an extra roper on the first floor that was not there the first time I entered, I must not have walked everywhere. Also in the cave on the hill by the water giant there was an extra roper by the three devils in the far left that was only visible after going above the area where the devils were.

The tree

At first I couldn't find it, but that wasn't the problem. You have to burn it for a couple seconds before it reacts and goes away revealing a cave entrance. So this tree is right against the rock wall.

Blue doored tower

For me I have to kill the guards twice to get to the second treasure, not sure why. Kill all enemies on the top level (red knight and wizards) to get the purple orb.

Two entranced building

You have to kill the wizard to get the new scepter. this requires getting the spell from the blue doored tower on the left side of the play area.

Are with sleeping dragon

Enemies

They can push you off the screen but you cannot push them off the screen

Wizards & sorcerers

you can't kill them until you get the blue spell from the tower that takes the key

Red knights

Can kill them with your first spell

Blue knights

Fire or your first spell

Water giant

In the cave next tot he monster the second cross makes a noise, that seems to be the signal that you can now harm him. You must have a minimum power 5 large flames plus one small one (it might not be possible to go higher until later), then you can hit the water giant. I used the lightning, though others may work. At that point in the game I could only get jewels from the rocks he threw at me.

Hyper
They appear once you kill the Water giant.

Like Ropers, but faster. They run once you hit them, often at you. first 4 spells work

Golem

They run at you, fire and move if you have to before you can't. If you shoot them from behind they slowly turn around.

Have lit all three lights on the double ring, and can't advance either. Suspect the game is bugged...

Reply

Third gem

In the third cave

The cave is where there is no longer water. Take the ramp and go all the way to the left and up a bit. Once you kill all the monsters once you get the last gem.

Reply

Ditto with everybody else. Got all three stones, lit up the three places, and now completely stuck.

Schmorgluck May 12, 2009 2:45 PM

The only change in the environment that I found after the three stones were lit is

the cave entrance who used to be hidden behind a tree disappeared.

I don't know if this is of some use.

Reply

Haydn, do you mean the stone heads in the far right temple, that block access to the chest under the tree? I think you just kill everyone in the room to get rid of them.

This is ridiculous, either the game is broken or the author's want us to find some obscure doorway. Too bad, the game was pretty fun up to this point.

Reply

I think you might have just missed it. That cave entrance is still there after I lit the stones. Sure you're looking in the right place?

Well, I managed to get FULL magic power, and even managed to get back to the stone circles with it. But that doesn't seem to have opened up any doors for me..so I walked over to the dragon, and s/he is still asleep. I don't know what else to try.

I've spent a considerable time looking for secret doors in that underwater cave...didn't find anything...there's a place where it looks like 'almost' a door way to another room...and I was trying to get the golem to smash into the wall there...but never managed it successfully.

Might be worth a try.

In both cases, there is an enemy you need to kill. In the tree-bound chest room, it's the

It may be a big place, but there's one part of the outside map (other than the Dragon's mesa) you haven't fully *seen*. Literally.

If you were to make a full map of the entire island from screenshots, what areas would still be blank?

Also, as you may suspect, a spell is going to be necessary to open a path.

===

Oh, and I'll note that the game has a Ranking system. Not sure of the requirements, but a second playthrough with everything collected (6 Equipment, 4 Medicine) and a Clear Time of 16 min 25 sec still gave the rather low rank of D. I'm guessing to get the best, you'll have to ignore all equipment and life upgrades, which is probably going to hurt.

I have found an area I can't get to but I don't know if it will help me get to the dragon.

In the northeast corner of the map there is a small patch of land offshore that I can't reach. I have no idea if there is some secret to getting there and I am completely stumped on how to get any further. I am stuck at 4 spellbooks, a wand, my clothes, one key, three stones in the circle and whatever was in the chests in the underwater cave.

freezing the water in between with ice, as dumb as that sounds.. but nothing. I've also tried running along the entire outside border of the island, anywhere the water doesn't touch the edge of the screen... nothin'.

Reply
Brian Ackermann May 12, 2009 4:46 PM

elemeno...

Not so dumb...I've just spent the last 15 minutes or so doing the same...not just with ice (though that's most logical)...but with all 4 spell types I have so far.

And, I've been shooting with my 'first' spell, off the screen on all those places to the north, where we just can't seem to go...hoping that I'll hear the telltale 'ping' of an item that needs something stronger to bust it.

nuffin!

I'd call it a tricky puzzle, but after this long, its just going to come down to dumb luck to find it.

I will say that some moments have been frustrating mind you. I'm hoping to wrap this up soon though I've spent an hour on it already.

For dragon:

I used the lightning spell (anything but fire) but the useful thing to know is that if you fire a spell at *his* "fire" once it's on the ground, it will sometimes yield gems.

Oh, and be prepared to dodge a LOT. I only got 3-4 hits in between his bursts.

Reply

TheMaverickk,

I had figured out that fire part myself, I'm still working on the use of the new spell which obviously fit nicely in that missing spot.

What is this 5th spell and where do I get it? I beat the game with every other item already...but never came across a 5th spell.

Reply
TheMaverickk May 12, 2009 6:11 PM

@ Ganondox

Everytime you die you start back at that warp gravestone.

There's a brief moment where you are standing still and already healing, save after a second or two of healing, then die or reset your game and then when you restart each time you can refill your health gauge.

Just a little tip.

Reply

I tried burning that spot before, but I guess I didn't try it for long enough; I tried burning and icing the entire border. Getting stuck on that one part really ruined this game for me- some kind of indication that the fire was having an effect would have been nice. Other than that, the controls left something to be desired, and keyboard shortcuts for spell changes were sorely needed, especially in the castle.

TheMaverickk May 12, 2009 6:18 PM

@ Hamm

There are SPOILERS below... not sure how to do the spoiler tab thing so warning people.

Oh and the 5th spell is in the top right quadrant of the overworld.

It's in the dried out land and you need to make a path to it. I'm not sure if there are any other conditions that need to be met to make the chest appear since it was there when I found it.

You must have had a hard time in the last section, you need it I believe to defeat Gold Knights if I'm not mistaken.

The 5th spell is like a barrier spell it protects you and then launches out. Some may find it slow, I found some good uses for it.

Reply

Yeah, there wasn't a chest there when I did it.

The gold knights can be killed with ice, very slowly. The final area was tough, but the boss was easy.

Reply
TheMaverickk May 12, 2009 6:34 PM

@ Hamm

You found the little island though in the top right quadrant though?

Was it just empty?

If it was it means there's obviously something that needs to be done for it to appear. I sadly can't say exactly what I did, probably from killing some enemies or something. I would think though it was something I did right before or right after killing the water giant.

Reply

It was empty the first time I went there, but not empty when I just went back there again. Don't know why it was empty the first time, but at least I have it now.

Nigoro can make very good games, but this one could be better. Nevertheless, I am enjoying it with the help of you guys. I'm at the boss, I can't find a 5th spell anywhere. The boss is hard for me :{

Suggest using lightning for the final boss. It can hit multiple targets so its good against his homing attacks, and it seems to do quite a bit of damage to him.

Reply
qoalabear May 12, 2009 6:57 PM

I'm also unable to find the 5th spell.

I see a peninsula leading north on the NorthEast corner of the world.

I've made it to and beaten the dragon via the grave on the NorthWest island-thing. I've gone inside and made it as far as the tri-colored door. I couldn't find a way to open it.

Tip:

You are limited to one "shot" at a time, except for fire (I think you can have a few shots in the air at a time with fire).

With the basic spell and with ice, you can take advantage of this by getting close and holding the mouse button down: the shots hit your target as soon as you fire them, leading to a constant rapid-fire stream. Gold knights go down in less than a second of continuous fire with fully charged magic power.

I'm not sure if fire can be sped up by getting even closer, but it doesn't seem to need it against most enemies. Fire can bring down golems before they finish their charge animation (where they bring their hands up prior to running).

Lightning unfortunately passes through enemies and there's even a lag if you shoot straight into a wall. Possibly because you can't rapid-fire it, lightning has less push-back than the other spells. The increased damage is supposed to compensate for this.

From what theMaverick says, the 5th spell probably can't be accelerated too much, but wouldn't need it.

Reply

"It didn't figure out how to heal until AFTER I got to dracos mesa. Now I'm stuck with one hit point."

You know you can heal just be staying still, right?

Reply

I just finished the game, but I also cannot find the 5th spell.

I went to the NE corner of the map, and saw what looked like a path with a wider island going north, but it would not scroll me to a new part of the map when I walked to the edge up there, and there was nothing else (treasure chest, etc.) on the ground.

Complete in 19 minutes, all six items, all four spells... rank D.

What the heck does it take to get an A?

Reply

This game reminds me of Final Dwarf, only with the combat half of Zelda/Metroid games rather than the puzzly half. Separating controls so the mouse won't have to do all the work would be great, since I kept instinctively pushing the 1 and 2 keys to try to switch spells.

The only part of the game I'd complain about is the part where everyone gets stuck for a while, as it happened with me.

Setting fire to the tree in front of the wall, where every other tree in the game was fireproof? I couldn't even see that tree for a while, and thought nothing of it until I scrounged through the comments.

It has a sort of Haplandish quality to it: you start out with next to no idea of what to do, and the point is figuring it out. I liked reading the intro, though, and the music's catchy. A remake or an improved sequel would definitely get rave reviews and less whining from people who accidentally run into enemies or can't change spells fast enough.

Reply

First building roots and stone heads to get to chest

You must enter the building from the other side and shoot at the wall. You can only get to it once you have the lightning spell, much later. You have to kill the wizard in the first room you were in.

Golden knight

Use ice or your first spell

Warlock

Use your lighting spell

King entrance
Once you find the dragon you can't go back

Upper Northwest(top left) side of the island where there is no longer water, up and left from the are where the sleeping dragon tower is. Use your firs spell. There is an "island" (piece of land) behind the water where you can't get to. On the bottom side of this area is a flat spot, slightly to the left of the middle is where you should fire.
Once you beat the dragon and get to the gate you must beat a wizard near the door area in the hall, once I did that mind you I had to do it twice before I heard the noise then the door was open able.

King
Relatively easy, finding him was not, lol.

Use the lightning. You have to strike a few times with full power before you can hit kill him. Watch out for the row of flames. Try not to shoot too many times in a row unless he just shot the fire. Shoot the red seeker orbs to get gems to power up.

Reply

Once you get the 5th spell (thanks again for the help on that Mav) the final area is a bit easier. The fifth spell is a shield of sorts. If you hold the mouse button, two, and then four, orbs will rotate around you. These damage anything the touch. Letting go of the button will fire them in the direction your mouse is pointing. 3 orb touches kills a gold knight, even with 5 magic power. The final boss can easily be downed with the 5th spell by simply standing in front of him and shooting off all 4 orbs as soon as they're ready. He'll die long before you run out of health.

I didn't see anyone else post this, surprisingly. To open the door in the last dungeon:

You must destroy the stone head in the lower-left part of the dungeon

Reply

Yeah, I don't know how to get the fifth power either, BTW.

Reply
teckaway May 13, 2009 5:16 AM

For those with trouble with the fifth spell:

Go to the top right corner and you should see a nice vertical straight piece of shoreline about 5units long. Stand right in the centre and shoot perpendicular to the right.

I have some theories regarding the presence of the chest. I shot at a tombstone in one of the caves earlier and there was no apparent effect. Maybe its linked?

Tip for the final boss
You can safely heal during the battle

by going in one of the bottom of the room. Flames nor orbs can touch you. Like this, you con recover and go back to fight

Alternate (cheap) King strategy

If you have the hat and the staff, run up to exactly point blank range and continually blast him with ice. Whenever you get knocked away, run back and resume. Much quicker than using lightning.

Reply

Alright, for those wanting a screen shot of the location for the final spell, here you go:
http://img23.imageshack.us/img23/1160/finalspell.png

That is at the very top right corner, of the top right quadrant of the overworld map. Stand at the edge of the water, facing right, and use the fire spell to open that path. I also was charging the final spell at the time, so you can see what it looks like.

Reply
Joachim May 13, 2009 4:01 PM

And it took that screenshot for me to realize that until this very moment.. at least on this game.. I -know- I was reading the word right.. but my mind only saw left! Though it took a moment or two of the fire spell to open up the passage. Thanks!

Finally finished. All in all, a great game, and reminds me of Ginormo Sowrd. :P

SpeedRunner May 14, 2009 7:05 AM

Okay I've finished it and collected everything at least once. Now I'm doing a speed run and I've run into some trouble.

I've gotten every item in the game except for one hp upgrade and the clothes, which sucks since you can only heal indoors if you have that item. I would've gotten it but I forgot where the location was.

So now I'm in the final room before the king trying to open the last door/gate with the 3 circles. I've got half hp and I've tried killing a bunch of things over and over and I still can't work out how to open it. Last time it opened easily after killing a few warlocks but obviously theres more to it.

Anyone worked it out? Killing some warlocks gets rid of the blue circle, then killing some more stuff gets rid of the yellow one, but the red circle still remains. I thought maybe killing the warlocks with each element would do it but nope.

Someones has to help, I think I've got the game clocked under 10 mins and I'm trying to get a good rank. Better than the typical D.

I got 5 spells. 3 gems placed in grey circle, and a grey key. Obviously misses a golden key. But I am stuck, what to do now??! A dragon is sleeping on the top of a plateau, and I have spotted the king in a room when roaming the underwater cave. Some one mentions firing from a flat spot in northwest to get to the dragon, but nothing happens no matter where I cast spells? Please help me before I go bald!

Reply

Please help: There is no peninsula in my game (yet). My northeast corner looks like this:

What do I have to do to get the peninsula? I placed the orbs and defeated the monsters over and over again. But still no peninsula. Also I haven't found a path to the dragon. I must have missed something vital - could someone please tell me what it was I missed? Thanks in advance!

Forgive me if this has already been mentioned or if it is common knowledge, but I didn't see it in any of the comments.

Speed Boots

I just started the game, but if you go up one screen from the very first screen on the thin path all the way to the left, you find what appear to be a red pointy toed boot. It increase your speed by quite a bit and give increases your fire power by 1.
Be careful! I was just starting to get use to the controls when I happened across it, and suddenly I'm running top speed into the enemies.

Reply

So I am lost. I have been looking for how to get to the

dragon

for sometime now and cant figure it out. Where do I have to go? What do I need to do? I havent figured it out from the hints yet.

Ending Walkthrough

The Fifth Spell

Very top right side of the map is a little section of dried sea bed. Evaporate the water on the right hand side to access the chest with the final spell book inside. http://img23.imageshack.us/img23/1160/finalspell.png

Reaching the Dragon

There's a teleporting grave in the top left corner of the map. It's blocked by a strip of water. Evaporate the water using the fire spell in the bottom center of the unreachable strip of land. After you touch the grave here, you can't go back.

Slaying the Dragon

If you've got the cane, the ice spell will kill him in seconds.

Brick Wall

Bottom left corner statue, kill with lightning.

The Last Gate

Unlock each orb by killing a few corresponding enemies. Red Orb. Kill Golden Knight. Blue Orb. Kill Warlocks. Yellow Orb. Kill Golems.

Killing the King

As with the Dragon, ice spell in the face for 3 or 4 seconds.

Reply

Thanks, Nother. I finally made it. :-)

Why do people say you can't go back once you reach the dragon?

After I defeated the dragon, I just touched the gravestone at the top of the mesa and was teleported back to the gravestone in the dried-up sea.

No matter how many baddies I kill in the dungeon, I can't get the red gem on the door to go out. Any suggestions?

Reply

Carolyn,
Same here.

According to Nother's post,

Unlock each orb by killing a few corresponding enemies. Red Orb. Kill Golden Knight. Blue Orb. Kill Warlocks. Yellow Orb. Kill Golems.

However, I have...

killed just Golden Knights and Warlocks (I avoided the Golem) and have only the Red Gem left. This leads me to believe that the "Golden Knight" clears the "Yellow" gem, and the "Warlock" clears the "Blue" gem. Now, there is one "Red Knight" on this stage in the upper right corner. I believe you might need to kill him a specific number of times to get the "Red" gem to disappear.

Carolyn May 15, 2009 1:56 PM

Well, for anyone who is having trouble at the dragon/has low heath at it, I learned the thing's pattern, which is:

He'll always start off by shooting X number of homing flames at you, followed by a corresponding attack.
Three homing flames means

he's going to shoot a high-damage string of flames at you; amazingly, this is the most opportune time to heal. Simply run to the edge of the plateu and stand still.

For four homing flames:

He's going to shoot a flame spread at you. all ya gots ta do is dodge out of the way when you hear the first flame go off; preferably at the edge of the plateau. He leaves himself open after this attack, so hit him with ice if you can

Finally, for 6 (or whatever it is higher than 4):

Run, he's homing you. He leaves himself open slightly before this attack, so if you have high enough HP you can blast him to bits right then. Otherwise, run. If you'd prefer some magic power, however, blast the flames when He finishes firing them.

Yup... it's how I beat him at 1/8 hp.

Reply

I'm missing the orange stone... just wondering where in the world I missed that, since other people seem to have missed stones I got and gotten it instead....
