La PieceLa Pièce is a point-and-click Flash game that is unusually common, strangely familiar, and yet offers a unique experience than other 'escape the room' type games.

The objective is simple: find the exit. However, the journey is the reward in this game.

The game was created by Jean-François Dumas, a recent multimedia communications graduate from the University of Quebec in Montreal, Canada. His previous education in sound design is quite evident in this piece with its haunting soundtrack that accentuates the somewhat disconcerting imagery. The result is extraordinary and provocative, even if a bit frustrating or unnerving.

Control is with the mouse; and while there are times when clicking is necessary, there is far more mousing-over to be done to make things happen in this game. Imagine how you might scratch with a pencil the image of a coin beneath la piece of paper to make an image appear.

With thanks to Derek for sending me the link to the game, and to Lush for helping me through it. =)

Walkthrough Guide

(Please allow page to fully load for spoiler tags to be functional.)

I won. This game was terrible.

Description without giving away puzzles:

There was absolutely no reason for all that noise and super terrible effects. If they had kept the graphics normal, it would have have been a great game. There is no way anybody could get the password without checking out an external source. The password is in the format "name:password" which it never mentions at all.
They need to get rid of all that annoying fuzz and sounds. It is completely pointless to the game, and does nothing but screw it up.

WALKTHROUGH

1. Assume the window is the north. The remaining 3 walls will correspong accordingly.
2. Open and close window to switch from light to dark.
3. As you proceed through the game, there will be noises, and the screen will slowly start to go fuzzy and blurry. Try to pay this no mind because it has nothing to do with the game.
4. Start in light. Go to east wall, and wave cursor around until the dresser appears with the wood on top. Grab the wood.
5. Switch to dark. Go to the same east wall, and wave cursor around until the TV appears. Drag the wood onto the TV screen to smash it. The key will appear, and move to the bottom of the screen.
WARNING: The key might look like it is in your inventory which is also at the bottom of the screen. It is not. Make sure you take the key because it is not in your inventory. Otherwise, you will have to start the whole entire thing again.
6. Switch to light. Go to the same east wall. Drag the key onto the dresser. Open the top. There is a power cable. Grab the power cable.
7. Switch to dark. Go to the west wall. Drag the cursor around until the stereo appears on top of a file cabinet. Drag the power cord onto the stereo. Click the stereo to open it. A disk will appear. Grab the disk.
8. Under the stereo is a file cabinet. Click to open. Grab the file. Click to open. Grab the sheet. This is the username and password.
9. Go to the north wall. Drag the cursor around until the computer appears. Open the computer. Drag the disk into the computer.
10. Click on the computer to get the password screen. Enter the user name and password in the following format:
username:password
(Be sure to use lowercase). Press the space bar. It will grant or deny access.
The usernale and password is:
karl84:221821
11. Switch to light. Go to south wall. Open door, and exit.
12. Do not forget to submit a complaint about how utterly poinless and annoying the noise, fuzz, and blur is. The game would be way better without it.

Damn, this game is annoying...
Is the image supposed to scrumble like that?

Reply

Yes, I imagine that's just what the author intended. If you find the aspirin you can reduce the effects for a short time.

Reply

Wow, this is annoying. I have started and opened the window, then turned and seen the cupboard appear. I turn again, and the whole of one of the walls has the red marker, meaning you can do something, but nothing happens. I've turned again, I can't remember how many times, and gotten the stick thing from on top of the cupboard. Then turned and tried using it on everything in there, but nothing happens. When I turn back around, the cupboard is all flickery and things, and the breathing noises were too much for me, so I just had to turn it off.
I need some help on what to do next, I can't hang about and try to find out myself, because you ned the volume up to hear things, but the breathing disturbs me, I can't continue with it.

Reply

I did the same as Jessica, but I found the Karl piece of paper from the the filing cabinet opposite the window, the stereo above the filing cabinet and something under the window (when dark). I think I'm right in assuming that the room is different when it's light and dark.

Reply

I got the key from TV, but then I closed the inventory and now it disappeared. Is there any way to continue without it? Or is it a bug like getting multiple files of Karl?

Reply

after you've gotten the key from the tv... go back to the stereo and get the cd... put it in the laptop and it'll ask you for the login and password... the format is "name(space)password"... but when i tried to type in the space... it gives me an access denied.

Reply

I agree with Jessica. The breathing makes me want to die. I had to close it.

Reply

Omie, you have to type it karl24:the numbers. Lower case karl and add the colon in there with no spaces. A lot of people have had problems with that.

Reply

This game is really creative in it's own way, though at times the side effects get kind of annoying and stuff goes missing from your inventory, once the road is finish. It is worth it :)

Reply

Not a bad game. It took me a couple of tries because I kept getting freaked out by the shaking image and heavy breathing. The end was a little disappointing as well. I was expecting a little more there. Oh well. Short, sweet, and very good for procrastination purposes.

Reply

Wow! That game was scary. The music reminds me of the movie The Ring. Thank goodness I got out before Samara came crawling out of the TV. LOL!

Reply

im stuck on the code for the computer i really dont understand this bit can anyone help?

Reply

Beth - try entering the code you got from the file cabinet using a colon : between the two sets of numbers. Oh, and use all lowercase, too.

example: karl84:221821

Press space for access granted. =)

Reply

Strange... I can't find the key on the TV that you guys are talking about... I have the stick, the file, and that's it.

Reply

I can't find the key either. Is there something you have to do first? Where on the TV does it appear?

Reply

You must use the stick on the TV.

Get in front of the TV
Open your inventory
Click on the stick
Drag the stick to the TV
Key appears - CLICK ON IT or lose it forever and be forced to restart. =/

Reply

That's it?! You open the door and that's all? I was expecting some more to it. It was promising when i started it.
Really interesting.

Reply

I can't even find the stick! The feel of this game reminds me of the Silent Hill game series though - disturbing and unsettling. I like it, even if I can't seem to figure it out.

Reply

You hear a whisper from the corner, "I remember this game. I spent so long trying to get the pills, but I was always too slow." You get the funny feeling that this game has traumatized Namir's gaming esteem for life. Perhaps she should visit the Asylum only this time not as the doctor.

man, this game was annoying. :( quit after finding the stick and the file.....couldn't take the breathing noises and flickering images anymore.

Reply

I cant pick up the danm stick!

Reply

Where is the key?? On the TV? I can't find it.

Reply

Agh. I bet this would have been a cool game. The breathing I didn't mind, but the trippy stoner flashing imagey things just made it WAY to annoying.

Reply

All i can say is : what the-?

No normal human being would breath like that, for that long. and whats up with the shaking images and darkness, then light, then things appearing out of nowhere! it's like the main character is either crazy or on drugs. This game freaked me out. I can't figure out what to do!

Reply

How do you get those meds. the shaking is startin to really get to me..

Reply

So, i think there's a bug with when i play. Whenever i take out the key, the cupboard appears and 'eats' the key, so i can't use it anymore. Whats goin on?

Reply

Yes, Taj, there are a few quirks with it. I think you found the same one that got me the first time I played. Note my comment above:

"Key appears - CLICK ON IT or lose it forever and be forced to restart. =/"

Reply

What do I do? I had the paper with something on it, a stick, and a key. What do I do? What should I do and why? Here's a guide of what I got so far.

Stick:

When bright, look for a shelf. Look on top of it to find a stick.

Paper:

When dark, look for a drawer. Open it for it.

Key:

Use stick to break TV in dark. You may lose it though.

Reply

wow... that was weird...

Reply

I beat La Piece! It was hard! Here's part 2 of the guide.

Cord:

Use the key to open the drawer where the stick was.

CD:

Use the cord on the radio in the dark, on top of the filing cabinet with the paper.

To beat the game:

Go to the laptop under the shutters, when dark. Insert the CD. Type in the laptop all what is on the paper. Before you start the second row, use a : to gain access. After the laptop says "Access granted", make it light, and turn around to see a door!

Reply

I wanted to beat this blasted game just to get away from the sounds... Unfortunately, no closure... Those sounds are going to haunt me for days...

Reply

Hmmm... I didn't get an ending...

Reply

is the ending just that one thing? the flash of light? is that all?

Reply

I enjoyed this one! It's great to see an escape-the-room that's a little different. Much like the RRRRthats5Rs.com crew, this game presents us with a challenge outside what we would normally consider "gameplay". A great pick, Jay!

BTW: What a rush, it *felt* like it took longer to finish than it actually did!

Re: The Ending

After the game is beaten, the right-click menu changes from the standard "play/pause" stuff to "movie not loaded", which almost indicates that a new video is loading. Still haven't seen any kind of ending, though.

this is actually the worst game i have played, got way to many glitches in the inventory 0/10 for me!!

Reply

I love it when a game is so disturbing that it doesn't even have to jump at you to scare you to death. I beat it a long time ago, but it's still fun reading the comments to see the freaked-out reactions of some of the players.

it's hard to play! especially with those blurry images! I wonder if I can still find out any clues in that kind of situation, it seems to be too late and I will have to start all over again...

What I heard on one of the gaming sites is that this game is an unfinished project made by that Dumas follow for a Macromedia Flash class that he in school. It is doubtful that this game will ever be completed since it was released quite a ways back. BTW, I did finish this game like a year or two ago, the only reason why I kept on this game is due to the sheer strangeness of it all.

Reply

I just played the game, though it wasn't the first time I've played one of the sort. I also found out the hard way that there are a lot of bugs when you play it in IE. FireFox seems to work best for me.

Reply

I tried playing this game when it came out, and couldn't deal with the breathing. It wasn't creepy in a horror/paranormal/trippy way... it was creepy in a "EW, stop standing so close!" way. It showed up on my left-hand-column series of game icons, so I thought I'd try it again... I think I got even less far this time than I got last time. Gameplay would be improved by having the option to adjust volumes on sound effects versus ambient noise/music (which is to say, that breathing!) independently.

Reply

jay, you need to be more critical and less forgiving when you review games. really.

Reply

Yes, well, I happened to find this game provovative and strangely compelling, just like I said. I realize it's not for everyone, but everyone that knows me understands this, and also knows that I like to highlight a wide variety of experiences.

If I find I'm being too critical of a game, then perhaps is doesn't belong here at all. This one, admittedly, is a bit close to that edge. Because it's so different that the usual point-and-click fare is why it appeared at all.

Reply

ya.... not a good game at all...i have been going through all the archives and i found this game and it is honestly one of the worst room escape game i have ever played but all that aside i thought it was pretty clever on how you could switch through light and dark but even so that dosn't help the game redeem itself from the substandered gameplay and visual effects.
my rating 3 out of 10.

Great! Now I have a headache! Not so impressed with this one, sorry Jean-François!

Reply

god,I hate it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! x(

Reply

Thanks for the walkthrough, skill, sorry you had to play through a game you hated to get to it.

I think the reason for the weird image thing is that the protagonist has some kind of claustrophobia or medical condition that is aggrivated by the claustrophobia, which is why he can't handle being in the room. As he slowly goes nuts, he starts breathing weird and seeing things. The aspirin helps for a while. He has to get out before he goes nuts.

I understand the concept behind the game, in a way that sort of slightly reminds me of the excellent Kafkamêsto, in that there are no real clues or logic and you have to find everything by chance, but the difference is that this game isn't nearly as big or as detailed, and the main puzzle, the "username:password" format is completely nonsensical and relies on no clues in the game. As art it's not a bad statement, but as a game, the password and the key ruin it for me. Not nearly as good as Kafkamêsto.

This game is so annoying. I hate the breathing sound in the background and how everything appears after staring at a wall for like 5 seconds.

TaladorPhoenix August 12, 2007 1:26 PM

The fuzz did make the game quite annoying. It was also very random. If the fuzz had com on for a while after you did a certain thing, didn't stay on the whole time, and did not make it almost impossible to see(like it just made the screen a bit fuzzy instead of changing the way things looked),it would have been cool.

annoying

Reply

If they had provided a little background info or maybe a help button, it would have made us understand rather than letting us wonder what the heck's going on when the screen goes all fuzzy and crap.

Reply

All right, I've been lurking here, but I have to clink in my two cents. (Not that anyone will read it, the game being so old and all.) I actually liked this game. It was creepy and disorienting, and I enjoyed it. I thought the effects were a well-done representation of panic and the loss of sense of reality. But I couldn't see the ending, which makes me sad.

Reply

Celidah, there is no ending because the guy who made this game for a class project never bothered to make an ending.

I still don't know where the stupid pills are.

Reply

Just bad, if I hear one more second of that background music/grandma dying sounds i'm gonna explode. Maybe interesting from a programmers point of view, but it from a game players perspective....blahhh

Reply

You know, you CAN turn your speakers off to get rid of the awful noises, not much you can do about the blurring though. And WHERE ARE THE ASPRINS?!!!

Reply

I told myself not to play this game because of the bad reviews, and then I did it anyway. WHY OH WHY DIDN'T I LISTEN!? This wasn't difficult at all, and the blurs and heav breathing and all the noise was just ANNOYING. I actually got a bit of a headache from it, and am going to find my Excedrine.

Oh God how annoying! It only looked normal for about 1 minute... thn I had to play with that 'noise' everywhere... really really really unnecessary. I didn't mind the noise because you can't turn off your speakers but there's no way to get rid of the fuzziness!!!!

frustrating? unnerving? you said it, jay.

Wow,finally done it by the guide~
I just can't find the computer at the first time...
and it become fuzz!!
I get crazy because of that...

Thanks for the game & guide!^^
but the noise really annoying...

Reply

I can't pick anything up. I see the stick and something next to it on the dresser and they won't do anything when I click on them.

Reply

It was going great until the screen started getting fuzzy. I had to quit because the file cabinet wouldn't come up after I couldn't see.

Reply

Ugh.. Now I have a headache. The blur was pointless and annoying and a huge pain.

Reply

What I can't understand is why this game came up on the list of games tagged "Horror".
Unless you're afraid of static fuzz, blindingly worsening graphics and asinine soundtrack going on constantly over simple and aggravating puzzles, I don't understand.

This game was HORRIBLE! I needed a walkthrough simply because I couldn't SEE anything to try to solve it! I rebooted twice because I thought my internet connection must have gone bad or something and that caused the graphics deterioration.

Absolutely horrible. No stars. NONE.

Reply

its not scary. quite pointless though. me and my bestfriend complained about the light and dark thing. when we close the window the things there get fuzzy and shaking i think.

Reply

I know this game is old an all, but I just found it. It seems it's tagged horror due to it being a psychological thriller. There is a bottle of pills on the chest of drawers which I guess is some sort of anti-schizophrenia medication. there are three. Use them sparingly to get rid of all the fuzz and blur everyone bitches so much about. I thought the game was quite easy.
