Hatoful Boyfriend

DoraHatoful Boyfriend, a visual novel adventure by PigeoNation Inc where you play a human girl attending a school for birds, is one of those games that, in my heart of hearts, is so weird and devious and hilarious I suspect was made just for me. At the start of the game, you've been a student at a prestigious academy for gifted birds for about a year... despite not actually being a bird yourself. (But that's a long story.) Will you succeed at your studies? Reunite two estranged love birds? Find romance of your own in time for Legumentines?... or maybe you'll find out the truth? That's just the tip of one very weird iceberg. With a huge amount of replay value, creativity to burn, and some of the most shocking plot lines you could ever hope to encounter, Hatoful Boyfriend is a fascinating and surprising text adventure well worth checking out.

Hatoful BoyfriendAfter your first day of introductions, you'll be able to finally make some choices about how you spend your time. Different activities influence your statistics in different ways, which in turn has an effect on how the different characters treat you and whether you can advance down certain plot paths. Since the core of the game revolves around the different characters and stories, most of your big decisions will come down to who you spend time with and how you treat them as opposed to boring ol' stat management. Don't worry; the game has five pages of save slots, accessible to save or load at any time, so you can go back to an earlier choice whenever you like at the click of a button. You can also click the little arrow button in the upper right corner to speed through text to any choices if you're replaying. The option menus are, unfortunately, untranslated as of this writing, but if you find the text hard to read, right-click to open the menu, choose the first option (P), and you can select your font of choice from the dropdown menu at the top, and then bold it by ticking the box beside it. Make sure you click "Ok" to save.

Hatoful Boyfriend actually comes in two flavours; free and "complete". The difference between the two comes down to an extra character, five more endings, some minor additions like a gallery. Trust me; you want to see the last plot only available with the full purchase.

Hatoful BoyfriendAnalysis: Whenever you're trying to describe Hatoful Boyfriend to someone, you wind up saying things like, "Yes, really," and "No, really". It sounds like it should be a bizarre joke, and a lot of people who wind up checking it out do so out of curiosity and without much expectations beyond getting a disbelieving laugh or two. While it's true that a lot of the game's appeal initially comes from how odd the premise is, players who give it a chance will find that it's far more than just a kooky premise. The English translation is nearly flawless, with the exception of the rare typo, and the plots intertwine in surprising ways. The cast of characters is enormously varied, mostly very likable in a variety of ways, and pursuing any of them will result in some very elaborate storylines that aren't just all about romance. Some of them are about... uh... well... I can't say.

It's difficult to talk about the game directly without spoiling things, but just be aware going into it that I did rate the game Orange for a reason. The delayed payoff and the abruptness of some of the endings combined with the oddball concept may not appeal to every fan of the visual novel genre. Stick with it, however, and you'll find Hatoful Boyfriend is easily one of the most clever titles you could hope to encounter. Besides, narcoleptic bird teachers, pudding-obsessed bird jocks, biker birds, bird urban legends... what more could you possibly want in a top-notch title? Some people may find the concept too hard to get past, which is a shame since Hatoful Boyfriend is easily one of the most original games to come down the pipe in a long time.

Hatoful BoyfriendVisually the game is... well, it's pictures of birds. If you select the option at the start of the game, you'll be given an Anime-style portrait of each character once as they're introduced, but otherwise, yeah... birds. It should be weird, and maybe it is a little at first, but the more you play, the more you realise how well it works. Each character's particular bird reflects their personality quite well in appearance, and after a time you just... accept it. You're a human in a school for birds. You live in a cave. You can't start your day without red meat, and you have finely-tuned hunter-gatherer instincts. It's just how things are. It's a weird trick how, even with the birdie photos staring back at you, you can actually start to forget you are dealing with birds. Right up until the feathers start flying and the beans show up, anyway. (Legumentines is a great idea. My husband is only getting beans from now on.)

Hatoful Boyfriend has a lot of replay value. There's a tremendous amount of content you just won't see in a single playthrough, especially because some paths and options won't unlock until you've finished the game a few times. You can spend hours going through it all, and if you're at all interested in uncovering the whole mystery, you probably should. Check out the free version if you like visual novels and have a strong suspension of disbelief, and if you like it, give some thought to picking up the full game. At just over five bucks, I will tell you right now that Hatoful Boyfriend is possibly the craziest and most entertaining game purchase I have ever made. Highly recommended, for everybirdie!

I seriously love this game~ Its so original and fun! Shuu's ending kind of scared me ;w;

The initial blurb doesn't make it seem interesting but it actually is. :)

It's weirdly hilarious from the start "imagine the wonderful voices"; "everybirdie" and "nobirdie's here". The Dance of the Sugarplum Fairies playing when you're in the doctor's "den of evil". The first chapter is a slug to get through but it's pretty interesting after that.

Such a fun game! It does take a while to get to a point where you can make choices, but I was really glad to see you can fast forward through that part when you replay. I've only played through twice, but I'm looking forward to finding more endings.

Also, there are birds dressed in maids outfits. So that's pretty great. :)

God, I love this game. It's so hilarious and weird. I tried to get my friend to play it but she started whining. Guess she just can't handle the aura of greatness emanating from her computer screen.

Wow, this game has got to be the best birthday present I've ever gotten (excluding my bike when I was seven). It's so cracky and trope-ish I can't help but grin like a fool. I just wish the drop down menus and options were translated since I find it a little difficult to read the chosen font and want to change it.

I can't get it to work. Instead of text I get lines of squares. This happens in both the demo and full version (English). Help anyone?

My word of advice to people who haven't finished every ending yet:

Finish ALL the shorter routes before partaking on the long one (check your gallery for hints). You WILL need it.

(Consider me out of the draw. I already had my most wonderful week, I want to leave the chance to play the greatest VN of the year to someone who hasn't purchased the full version yet!)

Tech support of what I heard from other posters on another forum. Hope it'll make things work.

If you can't launch the game or something:

Install Quicktime or Quicktime Alternative

If you can't see text:

Install East Asian Languages packs. To do this in Windows, go to Control Panel->Region and Language Settings.

Translated Japanese menu. I didn't make these, but the thread it was from is extremely spoilerrific, so I reuploaded them as a pack you can download and refer to. Hope the translator doesn't mind...

Hmm I can't seem to figure out how to get Endings 3, 6, 9, and any photos after 12. Any hints? (I also couldn't resist and purchased the full game so I'm out of the draw as well.)

Loved it so much I started a tumblr :P

This game is amazing and cracktastic and I love it. If I don't win one of the full games I'm definitely going to buy it. I tend to be pretty picky about visual novels but this is just too great. The beginning is a little slow but even that is entertaining. Also? OMG PIGEONS.

Following the demo link for Windows, what link do I click to get to it? I can't seem to figure it out.

I loved the game. Some of the endings were a little darker than expected, but it was still good. I had trouble keeping up with everybirdie's name during the conversations, but I loved how each one's personalty developed...well, maby not everybirdie. I'm looking forward to the full game!

I've never played a Visual Novel before, so I decided to give this a whirl. It's just ridiculous enough that I don't feel guilty.

I went with San because he amused me.

His ending was a little abrupt, and I'm disappointed that I didn't get to see what happens next.

The scenarios were hilarious, and I like how the bizarre situations just keep happening. The short length of the game (30 minutes for one play through) was just the right length.

I had no idea what I should have been doing with the stats, or if they even matter.

What's this gallery people are talking about? Is that only in the full version?

This was actually pretty enjoyable. I'll definitely be playing again to see the other endings.

Just started the demo... everyone's comments make it sound very interesting depite the characters being so unusual. XD

*giggles at the bird puns*

Are there "bad" versions of the endings? Some of these are a little sudden, and I wonder if maybe I needed to have higher stats to secure a real victory.

I love Nageki and San. San is pure lulz. XDD

I've been able to go through some endings and one or two surprised me, because there's no indication as to how it would develop when you're in other paths. It's as interesting as I thought though... sometimes you don't know the outcome until it hits.

Really wanted to give this a shot, but the process is getting more and more complicated. I have no idea where my XP CD is.

Shame. People were saying good things about it. Maybe at some point, they'll just make a straight DL-able English version.

Why do you need your XP CD DAM? If you're talking about the language pack, you can download it for free. I don't remember the exact site, but it wasn't too difficult for me to find with just a general search.

I admit, I didn't have the highest expectations when I tried out the demo, but the game turned out to be a a nice surprise. It manages to be both fun and dramatic - I definitely wasn't expecting to be moved to tears by the endings I got!

I'll definitely get the full version if I don't win.

Can someone help me find the East Asian Language Pack? I can't find my XP CD, and I can't find a download. Thought I found something on the Microsoft site, but it's not working; apparently it was for Office, and it didn't do anything.

Downloaded the demo and the English patch, but it seems I need this fix. Thank you to everyone who's given advice in the comments. Hey, I'm getting closer!

DAM,

Are you getting the squares text issue, or are you able to see the text and they're in Japanese characters?

If it is the squares text, I had the exact same problem and solved it easily by changing my System Local to Japanese. If you're not sure how to do that, follow these steps: (spoilered for length)

Open your Start menu. Go to the Control Panel. Select "Clock, Language, and Region". From there open the "Region and Language" options, then go to the Administrative tab. Click the button "Change System Locale" then select "Japanese(Japan)" from the drop-down list. Hit OK to switch the current language for non-Unicode programs from English to Japanese.

When you're finished playing, you can follow the same steps to return the language back to English.

This game is. Um.

I liked it. The stories are cute and short; maybe a little too short, but that's fine. The ridiculous characters--particularly Otosan and the protagonist--were great.

Reply

I'm officially hooked. *_* I read Angie Gallant's Let's Play on it and... and...

the bonus ending is really more of a survival horror story, but it made me sadface so much and omg how does a pigeon game have so much emotion packed into it?!?!

I'm definitely going to buy if I don't win. This game deserves like a gazillion dollars. A GAZILLION. It's almost on par with Fate/Stay Night storywise, that's how good it is! AND IT'S ONLY FIVE DOLLARS.

Played through once, and ended up with the aristocrat bird. Played through again, and...

It appears the doctor has "Se7en"-ed me.

Double-you tee eff.

Also, thanks again for everyone's help. Ended up biting the bullet and looking for my XP CD, and found it right away. Never happens!

Trinn, I didn't see your response until afterwards. I bet that would've worked, and I would've been up and running in like 30 seconds. Hindsight, eh? Thanks anyway though.

Bahahaha. This is too amazing. So much WTF-ery in these endings. My favorite is

puddingland!

I haven't finished

the bonus story

yet, though.

Reply

Well, downloading is too complicated, so I guess I can't play. Can someone tell me how to download this?

Better written than most normal dating games. This game made me laugh and made me weep...mostly the latter. I haven't been this emotionally affected in ages. There are a couple of minor typos, but overall the English translation is top-notch too.

Highly recommended.

Reply

This is one of my favourite games ever. It is amazing and I can already feel a massive fanbase growing... Highly recommend the full version!

Reply

I got the English patch and the demo game, but when I try to run the application a text box I can't understand appears and it closes the game. I don't know what I'm missing.

You need to install Quicktime. I'm not sure if all versions work.

I installed the english menu pack, but it doesn't seem to work in the game?

I also opened it but all I see are symbols.

I missed the party on this one the first time around, but it's back in the news due to a new "HD" Steam version that Mediatonic released last week: http://store.steampowered.com/app/310080/

My fellow Mac users in particular might want to check out the new version, since the original version is incompatible with OS X versions above 10.6, which of course is over three years out of date.

I've already run across a few spoilers, but I'm still looking forward to finally seeing what all the fuss was about...

As an update to the walkthrough: seems the Steam version has a new ending (which you'll need to reach along with all 12 original endings plus the "BBL" bonus story to unlock the extended epilogue). To get there,

follow the route in the walkthrough for Ending No. 12, but at the final decision point, bring up Azami's martial arts skills instead of her scooter.

In the BBL path:

I just finished playing the Steam version today. It seems like you're able to save at points besides the maintenance room and the end of chapters. ^_^

Also, I never saw any highlighted words. *shrug* It didn't seem to affect anything though.

...So I didn't actually get around to playing through this VN until earlier this year. Here's the Steam review I posted:

"This game is even better than the premise makes it out to be.

I have spent the past few days playing through each of the many routes of Hatoful Boyfriend from start to finish. I had heard there was quite a bit of hidden depth to this game... But I was not expecting as much of it as there was. Of the various routes in the game, some were more emotional than others, and some were downright silly. By chance, I started off with what seemed to be among the most emotional of them all, so several of the other routes were a little disappointing by comparison. There were references to Pokemon and Gurren Lagann and other popular culture littered throughout the visual novel, which was entertaining for a time, but they're not so overused as to come off as trying too hard to be funny. Honestly, for the most part, you should just treat 90% of those routes as a basic introduction to the characters.

Then I started the final route. It starts out almost the same... And then takes a huge left turn. It is basically a totally different game, and pretty much my primary reason for recommending the game. It answers all the questions brought up and never answered in the other routes (and some you might not even have thought of). It's *very* emotional at times, and just generally intense. So if you play a few routes and aren't too impressed, hang in there. It is worth it.

It's almost certainly worth $10, and you should definitely get it if it's on sale. The soundtrack is comprised of a bunch of short, looping songs, but the writing/translation is surprisingly good (barring a few occasional mistakes like missing words), and the story turned out to be really compelling. You'll laugh, you might cry, you'll definitely say "holy ♥♥♥♥" a few times.

Buy it. You will not regret it."

Dr Lawrence is one of those rare, priceless men in the world of marriage and relationship advice who respects women and men equally and therefore sets himself apart as a respected voice to both genders. His work consistently portrays the warmth and compassion of a man who is truly doing what he was born to do. And given the thousands of of people worldwide who his work has been so meaningful to--ourselves included--that earns him our highest recommendation. We're proud to work with him any chance we can get, and can't wait to do so again soon." Our marriage is better now with his spell his email address is [email protected]
