How Grimguard Tactics Elevates The Tactical RPG on Mobile

Mobile is just about the perfect platform for turn-based RPGs, where battles tend to take place in contained, small screen-friendly environments and sessions can be as short or as long as you like.

That's probably why there are so many of them.

It takes something special for a turn-based RPG to stand out on mobile, and we think Grimguard Tactics pulls it off with aplomb. Before we get around to explaining why, here are the basics.

Gameplay-wise, Grimguard Tactics sees you recruiting, levelling up, and Ascending a cast of Heros and sending them into battle in a variety of different modes, including boss fights, dungeon raids, and PvP.

These Heroes come in several different Classes, Alignments, and Types.

The Classes on offer are Mercenary, Blademaster, Barbarian, Enchantress, Sorcerer, Paladin, Gunslinger, Priestess, Arbiter, Brigand, Tinkerer, Shieldmaiden, Guard, Warrior, Fighter, Archer, Gunner, Spearman, Healer, Hag, and Witch. Each class even has 3 subclasses that can be unlocked and improved.

Types, meanwhile, include Support, Assault, Tank, and Melee, and the available Alignments are Might, Order, and Chaos.

That already makes for a dizzying number of combinations, and there's even more tactical depth to explore in terms of hidden synergistic effects, upgrades, Ascension, gear upgrades, and so on.

The combat in Grimguard Tactics is turn-based, and takes place in gridlike environments that constrain units to two axes of movement. This gives battles a degree of predictability and allows you to plot several moves ahead, like a chess grandmaster.

Outside combat, Grimguard Tactics also features a town-building element that involves venturing out into the map, raiding other encampments, collecting resources, and fortifying your Holdfast--a hamlet containing the last vestiges of humanity.

Grimguards Tactics is great on mobile for all the reasons turn-based RPGs often are. Its combat takes place on small, contained battlefields, and it's designed to let you settle in for a long session or bust out a few battles as your schedule allows.

Plus, it lets you engage at different levels of intensity. You can play manually, with full control over every tactical twist and turn, or you can activate autoplay and let the game's AI take over for a while.

Basically, it ticks every gameplay box--but it's the lore that really gets us excited about Grimguard Tactics.

It's normal for developers to come up with a fantasy backstory to set their turn-based action against, but Grimguard Tactics developer Outerdawn has gone to extreme lengths to give this game a rich world, compelling backstory, and engaging characters.

We can't possibly cover everything there is to cover, but the following should give you an idea of just how special this game is.

Like a lot of the best fantasy fiction, Grimguard Tactics is set long after its world's Golden Age, which was brought to an abrupt end following a brutal murder, a god's descent into madness, and a betrayal that cut down the last remaining heroes.

Ever since, the citizens of Terenos--the game's fantasy realm--have been slowly rebuilding their civilization, all the while battling a dark force that whispers to them in their dreams and makes them greedy, selfish, and suspicious of others.

Plus, they're dealing with the Primorva, a species of monster that embodies humanity's basest instincts and threatens the corruption of everybody.

It's compelling stuff, and months of creative energy have clearly been poured into Grimguard Tactic's places and characters too.

Terenos is made up of several regions, all with their own topographies and cultures, and the character list includes rebellious Woodfae, a disillusioned Mercenary, a semi-insane Sorcerer, and a swarthy Gunslinger, among many others.

While Grimguard Tactics has all the slick, versatile gameplay of a hit turn-based mobile RPG, it's in the lore that it really leaves its genre stablemates in the dust.

You can play it for free right now on the App Store and the Google Play Store.
