GrimmrookGriswold the GoblinGreen skin? Check. Big old batwing ears? Check. Gross boils and growths sprouting all over? Double and triple check. Uncontrollable flatulence? A very unfortunate check. It's strange that something or someone so undeniably gross could also end up being so endearing, but that's Griswold the Goblin, and after featuring the first part of his epic serial adventure, we simply couldn't help ourselves. We had to go back to the beginning to see where this little guy came from.

In Griswold the Goblin (no subtitle, thank you very much), we are introduced to the odious yet adorable little green guy in his first flash adventure. And oh what a great time to drop in on Griswold's life, for miserable and downtrodden though he may be, his luck's about to change when the rock he trips over turns out to be a very pretty rock. A pretty, shiny, multi-faceted, red rock that fills the eponymous Goblin's very heart and soul with song and joy! And then his luck is quickly changed right back to the bad kind when his new found treasure is stolen from him that very night.

Griswold the GoblinNow we must engage on a wild romp to retrieve Griswold's shiny red rock before some nefarious ne'er-do-well employs it in his dastardly machinations. For those who have already plunged headfirst into Chapter 1 of Islands of Fire, you will find instantly recognizable the game's sardonic humor and cartoonish charm. Also, there is the abundance of clever puzzles that still remain for the most part largely logical and thus solvable without too much help.

Of course, there are some rough spots, many of which were thankfully addressed in the later installment. The control scheme is a bit clumsy; Griswold is navigated using arrow keys which can be a little frustrating at times. And call me lazy but do you really have to open up your inventory every time you pick up an item? The absolute worst, though, is the final mini game at the very end that had me mere seconds from tossing the computer monitor straight out the window followed quickly by a rage induced tree stump demolition spree that I'm sure the neighbors wouldn't look too fondly upon.

But these minor quibbles aside, the first Griswold the Goblin remains a light-hearted and charming adventure, one that will leave you with little doubt as to why a sequel had to be made.

There seem to be a problem with making potions.

The salt water doesn't enter the potion bottle! And when I try to put things in in the bottle, such as a hair, nothing works.

Soooooo the save feature doesn't work on this game. At all. I thought I was being good and saving as I went, and apparently you either can't save over your old files, or it only records one area for the save (one of my later files puts me back in the same spot as another one...)

Reply

Oh geez, actually it did save some of it. I still could have sworn I saved later than where it put me though. Sorry for being a nuisance

One thing that bothered me about the navigation, and if you aren't using the walkthrough but it seems like you're missing some crucial items you might want to read this:

Almost everywhere, you can only get from one place to another on the path; but there's one exception

You can go to the right from the closed library

Also I found using the

book

very awkward:

You have to get the book to show up in the big window on the right in the inventory screen, then click on it with the hand icon to read it.

Fortunately the authors smoothed that kind of problem out a little in the sequel. Anyway, given Kyle's caveats, very nice game.

I know I'd enjoy it if I could get past the instruction pages! I understand I have to try the things the instructions are explaining to me, but on the page about the inventory, I CANNOT click GO even after opening the inventory box and clicking on boxes with the eye. Little frustrated, since I must be missing something obvious.

Reply

Ack, never mind, for some reason the 4th time it worked.

Reply

I can't even get the game started. The second helpful information screen about the inventory menu and mouse icons won't go away no matter how much I click on the GO! button. I can of interact with the objects under the words, but I can't get Griswold to move.

Reply

i can't pick up the key. everytime i try,the guy just says "if you break it you buy it" am i doing something wrong?

Reply

You aren't doing anything wrong, Paul, you just can't get the key yet.

You have to get Gavin (the other goblin) to go away first.

See that sign saying "Have you seen this chicken?" You have. If you can get the chicken and give it to Gavin, something might happen.

Reply

about my last post about the key, sorry about that. i missed the part that said to give the chicken to the goblin. In any rate the swimming mini game is hard. I only found 2 air holes. then i ran out of oxygen. There has to be an easier way. In any case,up until that point,it was easy. oh well :(

Thanks Kyle, I'll keep that in mind.

I can't figure out how to put down the matches.

Anyone find the swimming mini game hard?

Reply

How do you get the worm out?

Reply

Where is the door which you have to bomb with the meteor potion? Is it in the cemetary? Also, if it is, Then you've probably put the wrong directions because I can't go right more than once

I have now finished both games and hope another one is coming very soon, many thanks for these games, but the best part is reading all the comments, these make me laugh, so keep it up guys.

Reply

@ Sheila: Is your cursor still the scale after you get the scales? I get blasted out too but I'd have the scale as my cursor, which I can put safely into my inventory after being blasted out
