JayDeep Chalk 2If you have played the first Deep Chalk, reviewed it back in April, then you experienced not a game but an interactive piece of art with an objective: to discover its secrets and escape. Designer Zack Livestone has been heavily moved by the works of Mateusz Skutnik enough to be inspired to create his own interactive journey of discovery. The result was an abstract surreal world of sound and image, brought together to create a sense of wonder. And a sequel was promised.

Enter Deep Chalk: Second Phase the continuation of the journey of the crystal, the player character in Zack's black and white world. The objective is the same: discover the secrets hiding beneath the surface and escape. While you're there, enjoy the quest; be inspired.

Cheers to Mixedmetaphor and Dsrtrosy for sending this one in. =)

Walkthrough Guide

(Please allow page to fully load for spoiler tags to be functional.)

It wasn't that hard, but here's a walkthrough anyways.

Deep Chalk Walkthrough:

Title Screen:

  1. Click on the lever!

Stage 1:

  1. Mouse over all the little circles so they bloom into flowers - there are 20 in total

  2. Click on the crystal & move it to the door

Stage 2:

  1. There's a little box on the far right side of the top ledge. Click on it to reveal a second ledge

  2. Click on the box on the second ledge

  3. Click on the crystal & move it down towards the wire thing

  4. Use your mouse to slice through the string that's dangling the key so the key falls down

  5. Click on the key to reveal this accordion thing from the top

  6. Click on the bottom button of the accordion and use your pointer to chase the 2 balls of light simultaneously so they end up around the crystal. Make sure they don't stay idle for too long or else they'll disappear!

Stage 3:

  1. See the random flashing stars near the top of the screen? Move your mouse over them from right to left to reveal some numbers

  2. Find the 4 gears. If you need help, they're hidden:

    • On the left side of the rocky edge.

    • Behind the 2nd reed of the left plant

    • In the clear area above the hook

    • Behind the 1st reed of the right plant

  3. Press the square button that is now connected to the gears to pull up a diamond that is divided into 4 parts

  4. Click on the parts of the diamond in the order specified by the drawing in the right corner. After you get it once, the order will change, and you'll have to enter the new code

  5. The code will appear in the dark area to the right of the gears. In case you missed the audio clip, the code is:

    • 1969

  6. Now go enter the code into the numbers at the top. Remember that the 2nd & 4th digits are upside down!

  7. Click on the square black button on the thing with the antenna on the left of the code.

  8. Click on the diamond with an antenna button in the middle of the screen to lower a platform from the sky.

  9. Move the crystal to the platform

Stage 4:

  1. See the remote control thing in the bottom left corner? Use it to move the multi-purpose platform around. The order is:

    • 1,3,4,2,4,5,1

  2. Spin the 4 rotating planks 3 times each to power up the satellite dish.

  3. Move your crystal down towards the bridge

  4. Click on the button attached to the satellite dish to lower the bridge and your crystal will move on.

Stage 5:

  1. There are 3 light boxes, and each of them are attached to a circular thing with a switch. Flip all 3 switches so they shine onto your crystal

  2. Click on the black square button in front of the crystal to start redirecting the light

  3. A shining spot will appear to the right of the button. Direct the beam of light towards that spot.

Hurray! You win!

I didn't really like the first one - the text was unreadable, everything was so tiny and the gameplay boiled down to a pixel hunt.

The second part is a bit better then the first and the surreality of the whole thing is refreshing, but I still must complain - the black and white colour scheme combined with tiny "hot spots" make a pretty unsatisfying gaming experience to anyone who doesn't have 20/20 vision. Underneath it all there is a really lovely, artistic game.. too bad the author is so stuck on "the tinier the better" principle.

Reply

I love this little series, it is very interesting to move the mouse over things just to see what happens. My only problem with it as a 'game' is that sometimes the hotspots just don't react, and so you don't think you are doing the right thing until suddenly it works...

Whoever the protagonist of this game is must be very clumsy. First spilling glasses of water, now breaking vases...

Reply

I thought the first one was more intuitive. In both of them I did a lot of things by accident, which is a problem when you have mouse-overs in point and click games. Sometimes I had no idea what I did, or how to repeat it.

Does anybody know if there is a use for the:

robot head

in scene 3?

LaLaDoo June 4, 2008 7:41 AM

I just played the first one again and the author seems to have some sort of obsession with

1969

Reply

I just don't like if a point and clicker doesn't use logic. I know it's just me, still...

But still, this is an enjoyable one.

Reply
Anonymous June 4, 2008 11:58 AM

great game!! there was plenty of logic in this game... the magic of it was being able to sort through the abstraction to understand the logic and systems hidden below the seemingly unconnected

can't wait for more, one of my favourite point and clicks, I wish they were longer and that each level was more involved!

Reply

Hrr, the second scene... Not for laptops to finish :(

Reply

Could somebody clarify where the numbers are entered in level 3? 'At the top' isn't really narrowing it down for me and I can't find anywhere to either type or to click! Thanks.

Reply

That was beautiful! I resolved not to use hints, and made it through on my own, a first for me :]

Reply

"go enter the code into the numbers at the top" (stage 3 - part 6)

At the top of what ? Where ?

Reply

has anyone had trouble loading either game?

I've reloaded the games 4 times now and they get stuck on the loading screen :(

Reply

Just to drive the point home that you have limited ability in this game, there are tassel-like strings you could pull, but cannot. I'm glad there are other ways through this game that don't involve opening window curtains and starting ceiling fans.

LaLaDoo, the author's true obsession seems to be with Boards of Canada more than that certain number you mentioned. One of their songs is entitled that, which happens to play when a certain trigger is enacted. In fact, if you listen to B.O.C., you will notice all the different snippets of sounds and the soundtrack is all Boards of Canada.

I'm a big fan of the band and this series. I liked this one more than the first, but gameplay is still a little glitchy and slow.

Reply

is anyone else having trouble with the diamond code thing in the third level?

Reply

Have I hit a glitch? I'm on screen three in what would be the last step on the walkthrough, but the button isn't doing anything. I've done everything else in the walkthrough, but all I can do now is

    listen to the "dandelions" clip
    Swing the hook
press the other buttons, except the "code entering" one (though none of them do anything)

Was I missing something, or was I really stuck?

Reply
strakka June 5, 2008 10:04 AM

My bad. Maybe my walkthrough wasn't clear enough. It's kinda hard to describe what to press when everything's black, white, and just... abstract.

bob:

In stage 3, step 1, you reveal a set of 4 numbers in the top left hand corner of the screen.

Arcan:

Which square button are you pressing? To the right of the numbers (where you entered the code), there's a square button on the console with an antenna sticking out of it. Click that button first. Then you click on the diamond shaped button with an antenna sticking out of it in the middle of the screen.

Hope that helped!
The only sketchy things I've found are:

If you're getting problems moving the crystal, you might have to click, then motion in the direction you want it to go.

and:

The super cheating walkthrough:

Right click on the window and click "forward" to advance levels! :D

Reply

I think the reason the creator is obsessed with 1969 is because it might be a birthday to him or a family member.

Reply
Minnaloushe June 5, 2008 5:38 PM

I have the same problem as Arcan. I've done everything, but no platform appears when i press the diamond button :(

Reply

It sure is small. One page. Move my mouse over a few places and little spot light things light up and a bunch of words appear and I click on set of words and go to a Canadian site or click on the word play and the game starts again. Still the music and sound fx are nice.

Reply

Is anyone else having a problem with playing this game in firefox? I can complete what seems to be the Title Page? But when I have set all the levers and the spot lights are shining on the diamond and the 4th spot light has made the leaves and words "bloom" on the page... that's it. It won't advance to the next page. I have not tried this in any other browser.

Reply

strakka, what on earth are the

"4 rotating planks"

on stage 4? Could you maybe describe their location, or what else they might look like?

Also, I'm not sure if the sequence you give for the immediately preceding step is the same for everyone -- sometimes the thing didn't move when I clicked buttons in the order you gave, and when I clicked some buttons out of order, it moved anyway.

Reply

Addendum to last comment -- I found them (wholly by accident, LOL). To others who might be confused, I thought that they looked more like

little TV screens

. Also,

to spin them you can't click them -- you have to kind of swipe the mouse over them.

Also, I realized that "what on earth" might sound a little harsh. I didn't mean it that way, sorry if it came out poorly.

Reply

Can you get "stuck" in this game? I'm on the screen with the lamps, the one after the flowers, and I tried to pull the cord on the left, and it broke! I don't know what to do, I turned on some lights, and moved the diamond to the bottom, and now I got nothing!

Reply

It is official...
I cannot play this game while using Firefox. It seems to do fine in IE. So if you are unable to get past the screen that to me looks like the last screen, then you will have to play this in another browser other than Firefox.

It looks like the last screen because it has a link to the band, a link for comments, and a link to rePlay, when you complete it. They appear and nothing else happens.

Reply

Oops, I meant to clarify... the screen I described as the "last screen" is the ONLY screen that I can play while using Firefox.

The game is a totally different thing when using IE.

Now Ive had trubble loading Deep chalk due to

Loved this game, personally I hate games like "escape the room" and I think this one is innovative because it ain't just click, you have to slide and that kinda things,
GREAT!!!

Reply

This game rocked... especially the music. I LOVE Boards of Canada's music. They do wicked stuff. They even lived in Canada for a while hence their name comes from the Film Board of Canada. (: just a little trivia from a Canadian Chick (:

For those who don't know how to lower the platform:

After you've clicked on the square black button on the antenna thingy on the left of the code on the bottom right of the screen there is this diamond with its 4 parts. You have to click right-left-bottom-top, then left-right-top-bottom. Press the antenna button in the middle of the screen and the device lowers. Press the diamond and drag it towards the device.

Hope I could help you.

This won't load for me, and I've tried many times, over a period of months, because it looks great and I'd like to play it. I'm on IE. All I get is a white square inside a black one and if I highlight the space above the white I can see 'deep chalk flash game point and click boards of canada zackstone' in blue. That's it. Nothing works.

Pity.

I enjoyed both games and I must say, I love the crystal. I wish I had one of those.

Reply

I liked everything except that I agree that a lot of things were too small. x_x; I ended up pixel hunting and referring to the walkthrough often...

The fact that only the drawn things were intractable helped, but still.

I liked the music and the graphics though. The black and white wasn't too hard to see in.

For inserting the code at stage 3...

You click somewhere near the 3 black shines somewhat near the top, right? I think I clicked to the right of the last black shine.

Jae133:

I think it's okay if you break the cord. I think most of the string things, you're supposed to move your mouse over them to shake them and keep doing it til the string breaks. Try it with the key.

Finally, I got to play this game! (I have since moved to Firefox, and it loads up fine with that.) The game was lovely and sweet!

Plus mmm, Boards of Canada soundtrack. I never knew about that band before computer games introduced me to them.
