TrickyCactus McCoy2The cactus is back-tus! Cactus McCoy, spikey green distributor of western vengeance is back, and this time he has competition. He's met up with technicolor bird lady Ella Windstorm who spins him a tale of the Volados: a fallen civilization laid waste to by a mysterious cult known as the Reptaras. It seems that there's a secret vault that contains the lost treasure of the Volados, including the magical Serpent Blade. With Ella kidnapped, it's up to McCoy to find the vault before either the Volados or his old friends the Enemigos do, recover the Serpent Blade, save the love interest, and make out like a cactus-y bandit with all the loot he can carry. A worthy sequel to the original Cactus McCoy released in March, Flipline Studios' Cactus McCoy 2: The Ruins of Calavera will steal as many hours of action-platforming as the first one did, pardner.

Controls are nearly the same as the original: The [arrow] keys move you left and right. [A] makes you jump onto platforms and ladders and [S] makes you attack, either with your fists or any of the dozens of weapons you'll come across. [Down] + [A] drops you down a platform. To pick up a weapon, you crouch over it with the [down] key, and can aim it around by holding the [up] key along with [left] and [right] for a diagonal shot. Likewise, you can pick up boxes and other large objects with [down] and either place them by hitting [down] again, or chucking it with the [A] key. There are various types of weapons: punching ones, throwing ones, swinging ones, whipping ones, thrusting ones, and shooting ones. A new element is the barrel rockets, which take you on a speedy rock blasting ride and are controlled (barely) by either the [right and left] or [up and down] arrow keys depending on which way it faces. Defeating Enemigos gives you coins to collect, and with them, you can purchase upgrades between each level.

Cactus McCoy 2 is the best kind of sequel: one that expands and refines the original without sacrificing what made it great. In this case the expansion comes mainly in gameplay mechanics. There are a host of new weapons to find, each with it's own particular style of use, there are a ton of new baddies to fight, all highly punchable, and the new levels to explore are large, detailed and fit in perfectly with the series' demented presentation of the old west. Nice new touches include the arsenal, which allows you to purchase and equip whatever weapon you prefer at the start of the level, rather than waiting for an enemy to drop it, and the health-refilling checkpoints now sprinkled throughout. Best of all, the hidden treasures and achievements that were the highlight of the original are back and more varied than ever. To give you a taste, they include such things as "Take out Alpaca Jack with his own Revolver", "Kill 20 enemigos with a moving mine cart" and "Eat 10 piranhas with your chainsaw alligator". Classic. Whether you were addicted to the first, or this is your introduction to the series, Cactus McCoy 2 will prove an ol' west showdown that's bursting with the new.

Chests! (Levels 1-12)

Level 1: Tumblewood

  1. You will walk right past it on the first screen as part of the 'tutorial'.

  2. Past the save point, jump up on the platform occupied by a enemigo with laundry hanging overhead. To the left of the laundry are some metal rungs. Use these to climb up the building, then backtrack over to the left and go through the upper path to the previous screen. Continue straight and you will find a chest under a board. Drop down (down arrow + A) and open the chest. Jump back up.

  3. Continue left from the last chest. Drop down the middle board to a largish cavern, then go left down the narrow tunnel. You will find a chest. Drop down and find yourself back near the beginning of the level.

  4. This one is a bit annoying as you will need to backtrack all the way to where you dropped down to get the last chest. Keep going left and make a leap of faith from the very edge of the ground to catch hold of a horizontal rope at the left hand side of the screen. Grip yourself across the ropes and jump into a high tunnel where you will find the next chest. Afterward, drop down and find yourself at the very beginning of the level.

  5. Run back to the platform where you can access the climbing rungs you climbed to get to the previous chests. This time, when you get to the highest platform, go right. Step on the trigger pad first. This will open a gate to the right. Keep going past the enemigo with the crates and drop into the previously blocked room for the final chest.

Level 2: Dustbin Road

  1. Drop off the ripline right away, kill the enemigo with the steel crates, then use a crate to jump up onto a rope and wooden rung at the left end of the pit. On a small platform you will find your first chest.

  2. Head right to the next screen and climb up to the first ripline there. You will need to bail (jump) off the ripline in time to snag a second ripline heading back left. Ride that down under the ground to find chest #2.

  3. Drop down and head right. Kill your way through until you get to the end of the pit, then climb up the high ladder past the alpaca flag. On that building, head left and make a leap over to the horizontal ropes that will take you to a high platform supporting a beautiful, golden chest!

  4. Go past the save point and onto the next screen to the left.Ride three riplines down and bail at the end of the third onto a platform. Make your way left and when you are standing on a wide wooden platform in front of a rope leading to an alpaca flag, drop down for the fourth chest.

  5. This one takes some work. Once you've killed the Hobo gang at the end of the level, a steel box will drop. Resist your urge to destroy it for potential loot and instead pick it up and carry it to the right. Drop it next to the building with a wooden right arrow on it. Use it to access the roof. Jump up on an adobe building, then keep going left using a series of ropes to get up into a cavern. Activate the switchplate there then keep going left to discover another steel box. Pick it up and go left to drop down to the Hobo Clown gang rumble arena. Go right back to your other steel box and use the second box to access the roof of a building to the right of the one with an arrow. A platform and a ladder will give you access to a second switchplate. This will open the barrier to the chest, which you get to by descending, picking up the second box, jumping up onto the arrow building using the first one, then using the second box to get up onto the roof of that higher building and finally opening that darned locked-up-tight chest!

Level 3: Thistle Trail

  1. After escaping with a powder rocket, go right and drop down into a wide pit. A powder rocket and two enemigos are at the bottom. Kill them, then pick up and toss the rocket to the right. You can throw rockets before they ignite to reposition them (you will need to do a lot of this to access secrets). Throw it to the right a couple of times, then use it to fly up to a platform over your head to get the first chest. You can also try just steering the rocket right to grab the ropes and shimmy to the platform. You might practice these maneouvers here to get a feel for the capabilities of the rockets.

  2. You will see this chest as you climb up to the overhead platforms, but you will not be able to jump high enough to reach the ropes. Never fear! Keep going through the screen, up and around using rockets to break the blocking stones. Before leaving the screen up top, drop down under the wooden platform just before the wooden "go this way" arrow. Use more rockets to break your way back left, then depress the switchplate to open the barrier under you. Go left and down to that rocket. "It's pointing the wrong way?" you say? Just pick it up and face the direction you want to fly (in this case, right) and it will go that way. You might steer it up slightly to make sure you grab some horizontal ropes at the top of the cavern when it pops. Shimmy along these ropes to open that wily chest!

  3. Go up and through to the next screen. Use the rocket to break through the barriers and fight your way to a rocket positioned up. Pick up and toss the rocket back to the left to where there is a horizontal rope over your head (about three tosses). Use the rocket here to fly up and find the third chest.

  4. There are a couple of ways to get this chest. The easiest is to take the "up" barrel rocket that you land next to after taking a sideways rocket and tossing it down and to the left to between the tall post supporting the rungs you used to climb up to the sideways rocket. Ride the up rocket to the next higher platform where you can see the chest over your head when you ride the sideways rocket.

  5. Once you've gotten the previous chest, the next one is pretty easy. Use the up barrel rocket right next to it to ride up along the left edge of the screen. You should catch a zipline at the top and ride down to a platform. Go right and up and jump across a series of small platforms to find the last chest. Go you!

Level 4: Prickly Prairie

  1. Go left and up, though a Crusher until you get to a chicken next to a flower. Use the chicken to fly right and find a high platform with the first chest.

  2. On the next screen, use the barrel rocket to fly right (instead of left through some breakable blocks) to a platform with chest #2. You will need to time your flight to pass through the Crusher.

  3. The third chest is on a platform above your head when you climb the ladder to the highest level on this screen, above an upward-left pointing arrow. This is easy enough to access, just use the rung and rope to get to the platform, but you need bombs to break the barrier. Either start the level with bombs or keep going and break a crate on the next screen to get some, then backtrack and get the chest.

  4. As your adventure continues, you will find an up barrel rocket in a tunnel guarded by a tough enemigo. Play Punch-Out with them, then ride the barrel up to a left-pointing barrel. Ride that to an up barrel. Ride that up to the glory of the fourth chest.

  5. The last chest is gained by returning to your friend the up barrel in the tunnel and throwing it to the right until it is next to the save point. You will be happier if you have killed all the enemigos in this area first. Ride it up and to the right to a small ledge.

Level 5: Southwind Express

  1. In the second car, use the first luggage chest to climb up on the left side of the car to some chains that will allow you to access the roof. Go to the smokestack and use the rungs to find the first chest.

  2. Go through the first three cars and then use the chains to climb up onto the third car where there is a large chest. Rather than using this chest to crush an enemigo in the car, push it to the right to the edge of the car, then use it to jump over the smokestacks of the fourth car. Go right and find a zipline. Ride this into the next car and jump off onto a platform. Use the ladder to open chest #2.

  3. The next chest is over your head when you activate the save point at the beginning of the next section of the level. To get to it, you need to toss an up barrel from the third car of this section over to where you can see some cables coming down to the first car. This is tricky because you want to throw the barrels onto the smokestacks, not onto the fire valves. Be patient and when you finally get a barrel over to the left end of the smokestack/fire valve car, ride it up to the overhead platform with a chest. Pro tip: You can just drop down into this car where the enemigos ride the barrel rockets up.

  4. This one is tough. There is a second way to do this one with chickens, but I'll write up what I think is the easier way. When in the train car with the two switch buttons and the chickens, do NOT depress the second button to drop the large luggage down. Keep going through until you find a barrel in the next room on a platform. Four of them obscure a barrel rocket. Throw the barrel rocket down and pick up a barrel. Go back and put the barrel on the small wooden block at the end of the car with the chickens and the upper level with the chest. Go get a chicken, then get up on the barrel, throw the chicken into the upper level, then use the rung to climb up yourself. Grab your chicken and use the luggage to climb up onto the platforms that will give you access to the roof. Use the chicken to fly over to the left to the car behind you where you will find a chest on the second smokestack.

  5. Go back to the car with the up barrel rocket and the fire valves. Throw the barrel rocket down and use it to fly up the third shaft full of breakable blocks. At the top is the final chest. Are you having fun yet?

Level 6: Blackstone Tunnel

  1. You see the first chest during your hellish descent into the mine. It is on the top right of the second screen. You cannot get to it while in the elevator. Rather, survive to the bottom, then drop down a small hole with a barrel and head left and up. A few jumps across will take you to the chest. The hard part is finding a barrel. Oh that's right, you can't. However, you should note during your descent that on the left hand side of the shaft, the narrow path up the side that you can climb by way of spaced chains is blocked by a steel crate and two TNT barrels. You should also note a narrow hole through which you could shoot and explode the barrels. I hope you didn't use up all your machine gun ammo!

  2. You will find the second chest in the process of fighting your way through the hidden enemigo gang in the "Rumble in the Tunnel" challenge. To get there, use the first minecart to access some rungs. Climb and find a minecart which you will need to ride all the way down to the bottom (using the down key to speed it up) and push it under a low overhang. Climb up and around and discover the hideout.

  3. This one looks harder than it is (that's what she said?) Get yourself a bazooka somehow and then stand on the high spot just before you get to the exit to the last screen. If you jump up, you should see an up barrel rocket. Shoot up at it and you'll break the block it's sitting on. It will fall down and you can ride the rocket up the right hand side of the cavern to open the third chest.

  4. Chest #4 takes some doing. When you get down to the level where there are some breakable blocks, break them all with the barrel rocket (you will have to throw the rocket a couple of times to get the last two). Then climb up the shaft killing all the enemigos and pick up a weapon with some range such as a gun or whip. Crouch down and ignite the barrels through the gap, then drop down the very small gap (yes, you'll fit) and pick up the steel crate in there. Take it back out by the small gap and use it to weight down on of the buttons exposed under the breakable blocks. Stand on the other and a second steel crate will drop down. Take them both back up to the room where you got the first one and use them to weight down the buttons in that room. This will open a trap door and will give you access to a chest therein.

  5. Just before the Cave Crawlers boss brawl, use a cart to depress a button at the far left of the screen. This locks some overhead platforms so you can jump up and to the right to find the last chest.

Level 7: Prickly Prairie

  1. To get the first chest, you'll need some explosives. The easiest thing to do is to go into the level equipped with some bombs. An enemigo or crate at the top of the shaft also drops some cherry bombs. Explode out the breakable blocks down, to the left, and up to expose the first chest. You have just enough ammo to do this so don't use it up to kill an enemigo first.

  2. Ascend in the room with the falling boulders until you find a boulder-flinging enemigo. Kill him but don't destroy all the boulders there. Use one to carry down a level and put at the edge of a floor so that you can jump up to get to a platform attached to a chain. Shimmy along the chain to a zipline. Ride that all the way down to a tunnel with the second chest.

  3. In the bottomless pit room, ride the sideways barrel rocket down and over to the left to find the third chest.

  4. The fourth chest cannot be accessed until a hidden button is depressed above it. To do that, keep ascending in the last cavern until you find a mine cart. Push this right until it drops down a narrow hole with a torch in it. Then descend a few levels and walk across to a small room that your cart fell into. Push the cart across to hold down the button. Descend another level and you will find the platforms to the chest have now flipped up so you can use them.

  5. To get the last chest, find some explosives (TNT, fuse bombs, etc) and cross the long spike floor. Drop down through the wooden platform into a pit with an up barrel rocket. Use the explosives to blast out the breakable blocks, then use the barrel rocket to get up onto the platform. Keep blasting your way through to the treasure.

Level 8: Port Scamwell

  1. The first treasure is tricky. First, you have to find a button to flip up a platform, then you have to raise the floor in order to open the suspended chest. First, climb up the level until you get to a wooden floor and go all the way to the left. You will pass a hole with a rope hanging down. This is where the chest is, but you'll just fall through right now so jump over it. Go down a smaller hole to the far left and step on the switchplate. Then, climb back up on the building to the floor and push a chest found to the right over to the left and down the hole with the rope. Then, drop down and open the chest.

  2. At the top of the climb where there is a swinging ball and two Crushers. Head right, fight off the axe enemigos and scale the buildings until you reach a zipline. You will need to bail from the zipline onto a metal rung about halfway down, then climb up to the chest above.

  3. The only way I found to get the third chest may not be what the developer intended, but it worked. The third chest is in the left area of the level under the long wooden floor. When running left at the swinging ball and Crusher room, you will move into the left area along a long wooden floor and you will see a place to drop down onto several small floors. You can see the chest here, but you can't jump high enough. If you go around to the other side there are several coal cars that you can push down and send across the spikes. I did this, but I could not get the spikes to retract. Instead, I found a wooden crate in the Dumbbell arena at the end of the level. Prevent him from breaking it and you can transport it back to the chests, drop down the floors and use it to jump over the wall. Hey, whatever works, right?
JiG reader BB also points out: "You can just ride on the coal cart across the spikes, they won't retract but won't hurt you either as long as you stay on top of the cart." Thanks BB!

  4. You will come to a room as you ascend the level with some katana fighters and a lot of single-unit flippy floors. Jump up and to the left on the flip floors and you will find a chest.

  5. Dumbbell will help you get the last chest. During your protracted fight with him, get him to ground pound the breakable blocks you will see around the multi-level arena. Coax him down to a lower floor and get to him wall charge two breakable blocks at the left side of the area. Behind them you will discover the final chest.

Level 9: Gridlock Canal

  1. The first chest is above your head at the beginning of the level. To open it, jump across to the ship with the first leak. Kill the enemigos and push the chest across the deck so that you can use it to jump up between the ship's smokestacks. Use the ropes to climb up and head left. Make a leap of faith across to the left to grab a zipline and slide your way to success.

  2. Weighting down the four switches on the tall masted boat where you meet with a gang rumble will flip the platforms leading up the mast and give you access to chest #2.

  3. The third treasure chest is relatively easy, being inside the large boat with the cannoneers. Drop down to it through the roof where the fire valves are.

  4. The fourth chest is behind some breakable blocks on the lowest level of the ship just after the cannoneer ship where you found the last chest. Use explosives to expose it.

  5. Yeah, you know where it is. After you've cleared out the last rumble room, go to the right and retrieve the metal crate from a small ledge over your head. Drop it on top of the raised metal box on the deck and use it to jump up to the platform with the barrel rockets. Pick one up, jump, launch, then aim up and to the left. Grab onto a rope there and lift yourself up to the last chest and sweet treasure victory.

Level 10: Makopa Jungle

Because they had jungles in the Old West. Really.

  1. Use the ladder spears to climb up and over to the chest tantalizingly out of your reach at the very beginning of the level.

  2. The second chest takes a bit of work. First, you need to get to a deep pit where there is a long shaft down with an up rocket at the bottom. Use the rocket to go up and over the right barrier through a Cactus McCoy-sized hole. Drop down to the TNT fuse box, then drop down again keeping the right arrow depressed. You want to get into a downward-stepped tunnel in the lower right of the screen. Descend the tunnel and set off the TNT there. Then, backtrack to the beginning of the room where you met with the first automatic flip floor. There, jump over the thin upright and drop down a shaft at the lower left of the screen. Set off more TNT to release a boulder that depresses a switch. This switch released a mine cart which is now waiting for you to the right. Go get it and ride it left, letting it go under a low overhang to depress another button. This one will release a spiked swing ball that will drop a rocket. Ride the rocket up. I hope you brought a gun because you need to shoot diagonally to set off the TNT and gain access to the second chest. Whew!

  3. In the Jungle pit with the long shaft containing a up barrel rocket at the bottom, ride the rocket up to a hole in the shaft on the right. Drop down and activate the TNT which exposes a zipline. Ride the rocket up again and jump on the zipline, which carries you to a chest. Alternatively, use your mad skillz to hold the barrel and drop down to the floor out of the shaft. Toss the rocket across the floor to the left and ride it up to a ledge where hides the third chest.

  4. The fourth chest is a serious pain. It is to the right of the toothed stair as you ascend the level. You need to arm yourself with a latter spear and take a mighty leap off the edge of the toothed stair platform, launching a ladder spear into the wall. Then, go get yourself a parrot, bring it up to the same platform and jump off, flying over to your ladder spear. Jump off the parrot and then use ladder spears to climb up and over so you can crack open yet another golden chest.

  5. At the very top of the room before the final brawl is a long passage with many ups and downs. At the end of this, just before you leave this room for the brawl room, is a seeker rocket launcher. Wait for a seeker rocket to start chasing you and lead it all the way along the tunnel to the right to blast away the breakable stones there giving you access to the last chest. Alternatively, you can pack your own explosives, but where's the fun in that?

Level 11: Whiplash Rapids

Shut up, they had rapids too.

  1. From the room in which you set off some TNT to drop stepping stones into the rapids (this is the room right of the one you splashed into at the beginning of the level but two to the right of where you climbed out), jump into the rapids and ride them downstream. They will wash you over to the first chest. NOTE: You will probably not find this chest first, but you see it for a second when the level starts.

  2. In the first room (which is actually the left-most of the main rooms where you can first jump out of the rapids by way of low ropes), head up until you get to a zipline. Ride it down to a wooden platform and cross right to a green step with a wall overhead. Use a ladder spear to climb up the wall over your head to chest #2.

  3. This one is no fun. At the top of the room with the automatic flip steps, you can make your way left, jump on a narrow ledge, then jump across left onto some steep steps. There is a barrel rocket here. Ride it right and up to a high platform with more automatic flip steps. On this level you'll come to a section where the left leads to a barrage of seeking barrel rockets and the right has swinging spiked chains and tiny flip floors. Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to jump on these tiny flip floors and hang by precarious rungs, all the while avoiding the swinging spike chains. The chest is at the top. I can't help you with the jumping part.

  4. You will come to a room as you continue going right where you cross the rapids on a rope while dodging piraña fire valves. You've climbed up and you see a cliff with TNT barrels and three tiny flip floors. Destroy all the barrels to the left and expose under the farthest barrel a zipline. Take a leap of faith from the platform to the right, nab it and zip your way over to a chest! Bam!

  5. On the screen with the seeking barrel rockets and the small platforms, jump all the way across the screen picking up some ladder spears. Before exiting the right side of the level (the next screen is the Hangmen rumble), build a ladder going up the shaft over your head. There is a barrel rocket there. Ride it to the left and break through some breakable blocks holding back boulders. Drop down and use the right boulder (the left boulder is complicated by a swinging spike chain) to jump across and access the fifth chest from below.

Level 12: Calavera Ruins

  1. Access the first chest, which you can see in the first room above where you found the first steel box used for weighting two switches further on, you will need to pick up and bring around the ladder spears you find when you drop into the pit opened by depressing both switches with the steel boxes found around the room.

  2. The second chest is found by climbing broken, overhead ladder before you exit the second room. Jump to it from the right, you'll make it. Climb up and over, pushing a skull switch to drop a statue head from under you and pushing a luggage chest off to depress a button below. Keep going left through a now-open barricade, jump onto another broken ladder and trigger the TNT fuse. This has dropped an up barrel rocket down. Jump down to the platform below and ride the rocket up and slightly to the right.

  3. In the second room is a zipline. Bail off it onto some wall rungs just ahead. Climb up and jump left discovering a shiny golden chest!

  4. The fourth chest is behind some breakable blocks at the top of the third room. As you progress right and up, following the arrows, you will find a sideways barrel rocket. Ride it across and sharply up to break through two breakable blocks to land on a small platform. Jump up and run right to find the chest.

  5. Last one! So you've progressed through the level to where you've jumped across on two sets of automatic flip floors and the trail is bending back to the right. Just before you're fixin' to cross some fire valves, turn back and make a jump from the left end of the platform to a metal rung on the forest wall. Climb up and over to step on a switch. This will lift a barrier below (it will show you). Retrace your steps back and down, going past the seeking barrel rocket, leaping across and up to the left, then using the rungs on the forest wall to pull yourself to a platform with a headless tiki. Jump to the right through the now-open barrier, climb up and open your last chest. Huzzah!

I really loved the first series so I can't wait to play this one.
Can anyone tell me how you can destroy the tumbleweeds in the first level? I have tried punching and picking them up, but that doesn't work :)

Reply

Ooooh NVM I figured it out.

you need a machette or other sort of knife like weapon

to cut up the tumbleweeds.

Can someone tell me a browser that this game actually works well with? I tried the original with both Chrome and Firefox and for some reason both hate the engine (flash? Shockwave?) Chrome is notably buggy when it comes to certain video issues, but just wondering if anyone else experienced the same thing with this game?

I can't figure out how to destroy the tumbleweeds or catch the butterflies. Anybody know how??

Hi!

I need help with Area 1. There is one challenge which says "Destroy 6 tumbleweeds", but how do I do this? I have punched, shot and jumped on them, but nothing seems to work.

Help?
Thanks! :)

For the tumbleweeds:
What might you normally use on a 'weed'?

I recommend something sharp like

a machete

For the butterflies:
If you look around, you'll find something quite useful.

After getting out of the first area, go right and down and use the barrel rocket to go up and to the landing on the left. There you'll find a butterfly net.

Found a major audio bug: Sometimes ziplines will keep making noise after you leave them, to the point where even the main menu contains the zipline noise.

A word from the wise: Do not attempt to grind your way through this game. Your neck and wrists will hate you in the morning.

Hey Jo.
If you stay left in the second part of the descent you'll see tnt barrels inside the wall, shoot them and when you get to the bottom go down and left and you can climb back up the wall to get the chest.

For the butterflies, go to the area where you found the first hidden treasure. Use a rocket to get to a ledge on your upper left. There you will find a butterfly net.

Reply

nvm...found it...

you have to pick up the rocket, then run off of the ledge, then press "d" to drop the rocket, you can do this several times to put the rocket where you want it

Also great game, thanks for the review - I completely missed the first part as well, so for me this is twice the dose of fun :)

In response to bman:

Here's the parrot I was missing: When you have a chance to go left or right, go right. Shortly after you enter there is a platform that will only lower if a button is held down.
That button is

The one that you move the suitcase trunk thing, the one to the right. The trick is getting something else to say on that button. The suitcase is stuck on the left side, since in this version you cannot "lift" suitcases.

How I managed to press that button:

I finished the right side, crossed over the middle merge, and entered the left side. (NOT the entrance if you originally chose left. It's above it.) I grabbed one of the parrots and headed over. Here's the trick: getting that parrot down in that little hole with the button. Use the same method you normally would for dropping down a platform while carrying an item. It may look like a glitch because your hands are in the air with nothing in them. One the parrot is in place, head back down, and now the slide should be open so you can drop down and get the parrot in the cage. You may have to wait for the parrot to pace around and over the button. Should not take more than a few minutes.

Huzzah!

Chests! Levels 4-6

First, sorry for the spammy nature of the first post. I'll spoiler each level to make it visually shorter.

[Thanks for your walkthrough, roomiller! I've taken this one and combined it with your previous set of levels. Cheers! :) -Jay]

Thanks, Jay. I'm working on the next levels (I have level 7 done, but I'm trying to do them in threes). I'll post more Chests! when I figure out where they are (I'm still playing through the game) and I'll type up the walkthroughs for them.

Can someone post where all the Alpaca flags are on the 2nd level? I got through the level and missed one. Can't seem to find the last one (though I obviously don't know which one I'm missing). Thanks.

Anyone have any tips on getting the 60 combo badge? Like, which stage is best to do it in, which weapon to use, that sort of thing?

The third Blackstone Tunnel chest...I can't find it. If, as you say, it is next to the exit to the last screen, that would make it chest #5.

I found the chest by walking through every single stage. The stage it is on is the very first stage WITHOUT the elevator. The beginning of the stage has a save-point.

The 6-3 chest spoiler should read:

This one looks harder than it is (that's what she said?) Get yourself a bazooka somehow and head for the third stage (it has a savepoint at the start of it). Walk to the end of that stage. There is a rocky outcropping roughly McCoy's height. Stand on it. If you jump up, you should see an up-barrel rocket. Shoot up at it and you'll break the block it's sitting on. It will fall down and you can ride the rocket up the right hand side of the cavern to open the third chest.

Chests! Levels 7-9

[Added these to your original set to consolidate them all in one comment. Thanks again! :) -Jay]

Laura, if you want to get a 60 combo, get yourself a Gas Grenade Launcher (the purple ones that leave a toxic cloud). Go somewhere there are a lot of goons, such as at the end of one of the later levels. Kill an enemigo with the weapon and as more enemigos run into the toxic cloud, keep the cloud going with new rounds from the gun. Don't fire the gun until the cloud starts to dissipate. Each hit from the cloud will add to your combo. You should be able to get it up to 60. I'm sure there are other ways too.

Chest 7-2
There are LOTS of boulder-flinging Enemigos. Please be more specific in the walkthrough.

Reply

The second chest on the seventh level:

Ascend in the room with the falling boulders (the first room). You will pass 3 TNT detonators that must be destroyed for you to advance (the 3rd detonator is next to an Enemigo with bear claws). Advance right, walking off the edge of two platforms. You will see a chain above you that is too high to reach by jumping. Climb up a few platforms until you see several stationary boulders, an Enemigo with a flaregun, and an Enemigo carrying a boulder. Grab one of the boulders and go back down to the chain I just mentioned. Put the boulder at the edge of the floor so that you can jump up to get to a chain. Shimmy along the chain to a zipline. Ride that all the way down to a tunnel with the second chest.
If you have reached the "bottomless pit" stage of the level, you have gone too far.

Still trying to figure out level 11 chest 2. Hasn't played level 12 yet.
level 11 is very frustrating about killing those fishes.

use a ranged weapon, e.g, a machine gun would help

For me, this is more like an expansion pack. The secrets are easier to find while it keeps you from death by setting the check points. The bottomless chasm in the first game was much more difficult than this one, too.

Chests! Levels 10-12

Huzzah!

Added these to the walkthrough. I also added BB's tip from the post below. Thanks guys! [~Mike]

I had a hard time with the last parrot in area 8 too but it was a different one than mentioned above.

Location:

In the area above the third treasure where you first ride a barrel rocket to the left and then another one up. While riding the zipline you can see it on the edge of the screen above you.

How to get there (and that was a real "duh" moment):

After riding the zipline go all the way to the right and free the parrot that you find there. Take it with you and go upwards, climb the four stories above the enemigo with the tear gas launcher. Go to the left edge and glide over with the parrot. Drop down on the left and you will find ropes to climb up to the last parrot. Took me forever to figure out that a parrot can be used for gliding like a chicken. Duh!

I have been wandering far and wide trying to find the last coconut to knock down. Also Alpaca Jack does not juggle- he drops like a lead weight the second the death punch hits him unlike nearly everyone else. Any tips for either problem?

Michael - about Alpaca Jack.
I'd already gotten the other awards, including beating him with his own pistol. So I grabbed the pistol when he was about dead and kept shooting.
Kill him and then just keep shooting. The bullets should come out fast enough for this. When you run out of ammo, just swing your fists and pray.

To SkylerF, et al:

Firstly, there are 8 parrots, 16 coconuts, and 4 screens where these are evenly dispersed. that is: 2 parrots and 4 nuts per screen.
That said, here is the breakdown. These are done in order picking up generally where the last one left off, so look at previous ones if the start point isn't clear.

PARROTS:

First screen-[2 here]

1)

First parrot is above McCoy as he starts in the first screen

2)

Just after McCoy has jumped up a few platforms and has begun to run right, there is a section of the walk below a shack with two windows where he can drop down. Have him do so, free the parrot, and then take the rocket up to continue.

Second screen, part 1 (RUN LEFT FROM DOUBLE CRUSHERS) [2]

3)

After he's taken the zipline going left-to-right and has dropped into the next area, have McCoy run all the way right to free the parrot found on the ground.

4) You will need parrot #3.

With parrot in hand, jump up to next section. You will need to throw parrot up into next floored-in area. Then jump up with parrot at right floor jump shaft, then jump hard all the way left. Once you have cleared the tall wooden wall, THROW PARROT WITH JUMP BUTTON. If you don't, you won't be able to grab the rope line. take ropeline left, jump up and access parrot cage. Drop down and work your way back up.

Second screen, part 2 (RUN RIGHT FROM DOUBLE CRUSHERS) [2]

5)

Work McCoy right and up to take zipline going right-to-left. Work him left and as he begins to move up, there will be a parrot in a cage on a tall, thatch-roofed shack to his right to which you cannot jump. Get a shooting, throwing, or whipping weapon to free this guy... OR you can have McCoy drop down on the parrot from above while ziplining over him from the zipline just few more jumps upward.

6)

This one takes several steps: After McCoy has worked his way to the top of this area and has taken the zipline going right-to-left, you will see the parrot in a cage under the floor. You cannot reach it here. Notice the two trigger buttons, also in the floor, to the left of the parrot? One of them will drop the parrot. If you need to know how to do this:

jump up the stairs until you see the chest on the platform above McCoy. Push the chest to the right until it's above the parrot, then push it all the way left until it's on the trapdoor above the left button. Then drop McCoy down onto the right button. The chest will fall onto the left button and the parrot cage will drop down out of screen.

Run right and down until you find the drop-down shaft. Run left and the cage should be there.

Third Screen (with spiked pendulum) [2]

7)

Have McCoy go up the right stairs from the spiked pendulum, then jump up the roofs at right until McCoy can reach the horizontal rope line at right. Jump up to the short ladder to the parrot cage.
See this for bonus:

For a badge achievement, pick up the cage and carry it down to have the cage broken by the spiked pendulum.

8)

After McCoy has gone up the opening from this town and has run up the stairs going left, there is a small part of the walkway through which it looks like he can drop down. He can. Do this and there is a parrot cage here.

COCONUTS

First screen [4]-

1)

As McCoy starts, run him all the way to the left. Coconut is between wall and platform.

2)

Jump up a few platforms and next coconut is to the left, kind of off by itself on a small ledge.

3)

After you've had McCoy climb up the ladder to the right, and up the wall ladder to where there are two smoke grenadiers, there is a coconut above the right grenadier.

4)

Then run McCoy all the way left from smoke grenadier to the coconut standing all alone.

Second screen, part 1 (RUN LEFT FROM DOUBLE CRUSHERS) [4]

5)

Work McCoy left and up until he's taken a rocket straight up and dropped onto a zipline going left-to-right. As McCoy is zipping, look at the bottom of the screen: just past the halfway point of the zip trip, you will see a palm tree with a coconut come into view. Hit jump to release McCoy from the zipline and time it so you land on the platform with the coconut tree.

6)

When you have McCoy grab the vertical rocket, instead of aiming it at the zipline, aim the rocket right to travel out of the shaft and up to a thatched-roof platform that isn't easy to see from lower angles. This platform has a coconut tree. Get it and drop down.

7)

After taking the zipline going right and dropping down, run McCoy right about half a screen until he is standing on a piece of walk through which he can drop down. You can actually see the coconut before McCoy drops down. Do so, then return McCoy to this area.

8)

After zipline, run McCoy right, then up. After you've had McCoy climb the short, two-rung rope ladder, there is a coconut in the tree directly above him.

Second screen, part 2 (RUN RIGHT FROM DOUBLE CRUSHERS) [4]

9)

Work McCoy right and into town. Jump up two roofs. Coconut is about even with McCoy to the left. A well-timed mid-jump attack will get this one.

10)

Keep working McCoy up until he hits the zipline going left & down. Work left then jump up into a boxed-in area with the next coconut.

11)

Continue up and have McCoy take the zipline going right-to-left. Jump up the horizontal rope lines: there is a coconut tree after the last rope line is cleared.

12)

From #10, run McCoy all the way right. Coconut is in tree between wall and building.

Third Screen (with spiked pendulum) [4]

13)

Take McCoy up the right stairs from the spiked pendulum. Coconut is at the top of these stairs, all the way right.

14)

Take McCoy to the left part of this town that's just above the spiked pendulum. The coconut is on the leftmost wall, on a ledge that I could not reach - even with a parrot. You can, however, drop down from above after you've traveled further up into this screen. Easiest way to get this nut, though, is to jump left from the nearest rooftop and shoot at it with a blunderbuss, which one of the bad guys in town should have. Just a few shots as McCoy jumps, or one lucky one, will do it.

15)

Jump up through the opening at the top of this town, run right and jump up two rooftops; the next coconut is against the right wall.

16)

Run McCoy up the stairs going left and you can see the coconut in a tall tree at the top these stairs. Use a blunderbuss to shoot it down.

Guest: The hangmen are enemigos that wear

black hoods, a la a medieval executioner

. They tend to be solo on a platform somewhere, 3 per screen, and while many are in the common area for fighting, there are a handful that are tucked away hidden.

Michael: The captains are on level 9 (Gridlock Canal) and to get that "Sink captain with an anchor" badge,

you have to kill a captain with the anchor by throwing it at him. Hint: Choose a captain that is on a boat where the anchor won't easily fall into the water if you overthrow.

For the parrot badge, simply throw

an uncaged parrot

until it kills an enemigo.

Cans:

These, like every other list item in the game, are evenly dispersed per screen. All of the cans are on fences, so when you see a fence, check it out a little closer before moving on.

Screen 1:

1)

After launching McCoy up with the first rocket, the first can is on the fence on the small platform above the main walk at his right.

2)

Run McCoy right and drop down into the area with treasure #1. There is a can at bottom right on a fence.

3)

This one requires some rocket driving. At the top of this screen you'll see an up-facing rocket enclosed in explodable blocks. Run McCoy over this to the right, fight some baddies and drop him down at the first opportunity. Take two rockets left to explode the blocks and then grab the up rocket. Guide it to the left and it will take McCoy to a small penthouse room up high where a little can sits on a fence.

Screen 2:

4)

Run McCoy all the way right until you get to the area with the up-facing wooden arrow. There is a can to the right of that arrow on a fence on a high ledge. Take rocket there.

5)

This one is easy to miss. After McCoy has gone up one floor from the bottom floor and run the whole way left to the next up rocket, note the raised platform to the right of the up arrow. Jump McCoy to it and then to the rope line that will take you to a right-facing rocket. Take it to the right and there is a can waiting on a fence to be picked off.

6)

This one is hiding in plain sight. At the top floor, where McCoy is are traveling right and has to fight a concentration of enemigos, the can is sitting on a fence on a platform just above the main walk.

Screen 3:

7)

Run McCoy right and take the zipline going right over to a ledge where there are a pair of brawler gloves on the ground and a can on the fence.

8)

This one can be missed. Take up rocket and either jump McCoy off between floors, or take it the whole way up and drop down one floor. Run all the way left until you can drop down to a ledge where an enemigo waits for your cactus-y justice and a can sits on a fence.

9)

Jump McCoy up some platforms to two wooden jump rungs that lead left to a right-facing rocket. Take it to an up-facing rocket. Take that up to a zipline going left. Take zipline to a treasure chest and an up rocket. DON'T take the rocket yet. Instead, jump right to a platform you didn't see when you were zipping over it. Pound the enemigo and BB the can daring you to knock it from its fence-y perch.

That'll do it.

I have read the cheats and I still can't find the 3rd treasure chest in blackstone tunnel. I go up to the top part in the last stage before the exit, (cave crawlers), and all I can see is those red and brown planks that the enemigos jump down from.

Reply

@JIGuest

I think you are looking in the wrong place.

It is not in the last screen before the exit but the one before that. Once you get to the area where you have to use the barrel rocket to blow through the blocks you have gone too far.

You have to push a coal cart and climb on it to reach that high spot, just before you leave that screen. Then jump up and you should see the block with the barrel rocket (barely visible from down there.

I've managed to get all the way through the game, getting all of the stars and chests, and yet I've only mastered nine of the weapons, and it seems I need to master every single one of them in order to get many of the badges! Gah! I really want to get 100% completion, but that is a lot of grinding I'd need to do just to get those last few percentage points.

Area 12: Any help on where to find the third head (the one near the upward rocket) in the first screen? I seem to be missing something :S

Reply

On Area 11, I have unfortunately moved one of the stones that drop down into the water from using TNT into a position that is seemingly impossible to continue with (ie. I am missing a step to crossing the water... WHY did I have to do that?!?). Restarting the level just brings me to the checkpoint at the brawling hideout, and the stone is still not in the right place for me to cross the water.

Is there any way to reset that level, short of erasing all the saved level data, or starting over from level 1? Or does anyone have any bright ideas to bring some sort of stepping stone over to the rapids? Thanks!

Herbert left some hints for me a week or more back, so see if those help you as they did me.

If not, I'll add to it by saying you must use the last weapon in your arsenal.

Good Luck.

Gnit:

If it's the spot of which I'm thinking - two round boulders, then a space where a piranha is jumping, then another round boulder - all you have to do is, and I'm not being glib, jump over that space.

Maybe an increasing degree of difficulty before this point made you think something more convoluted must be needed...

Can someone list the 14 throwable weapons to master? I only have 13/14 for the badge and don't know what the last one is that I need to master.

nvmnd. found the daggers, finally.

Can someone tell me which throwable weapon I'm missing. I've run through all the levels multiple times and can't find it for the life of me. I have the following: Daggers, Eggs, Tomahawks, Bottles, Firecrackers, Fuse Bomb, Cherry Bombs, Boomerang, Lanterns, TNT, Power Ball, Water Balloons, and Thorn Bomb.

Hello, please can anyone explain me ho to get 3rd chest in Level 5 Southwind Express? I don't understand explanation given in Walktrough by roomiller.

Reply

Thanks for the help David George, but I've of course stupidly asked a question which has been answered in the help section of the game lol.

Yes its the spot you mentioned, but I was stuck because I removed one of the two boulders, and moved it downstream instead (seemed like a good idea at that time).... All I needed to do to reset was close the game (just the browser tab will do) and open it back up again. That reset all the 'checkpoint' stuff.. Otherwise the moved boulder appears downstream of the rapids, since I've flagged the checkpoint already, and there is no way to move it back to where its needed.

I think the complete walkthrought is misspelt for Area 7 - is should be Calamity Cave???

Reply

Need more coins? Here's a tip.

Max your Thrusting, master the chainsaw and play level 5 (Southwind Express) ... As you're cutting into your victim, jump - you'll launch him to the atmosphere 3-4 times in one shot. Be sure you're somewhere you can jump.

Reply

Can someone tell me the very last weapon on the last screen? It is the only one i am missing.

Reply

I'm not following this tip for finding chest #2 on Level 7:

"Ascend in the room with the falling boulders until you find a boulder-flinging enemigo. Kill him but don't destroy all the boulders there. Use one to carry down a level and put at the edge of a floor so that you can jump up to get to a platform attached to a chain. Shimmy along the chain to a zipline. Ride that all the way down to a tunnel with the second chest."

I'm not sure what "down a level" refers to, what "the edge of a floor" means, or where the "platform attached to a chain" is. Help appreciated! TIA.

I have two questions:

1) On level 12, where is the third statue head in room 1?

2) How do you get the third treasure chest? The barrel rocket isn't high enough to fully ride through the blocks, and I can't reach.

Thanks! (:

Oh yeah, one more thing: in addition to where the stinkflowers all are, how do I get at them? There's this one on a ledge (about fourth or fifth, maybe? It's to the left of a set of retracting platforms) that I just can't reach. Please help!

Reply

What and where is the final weapon?

Reply

I'm pretty sure I read through all the posts here, but nobody has mentioned anything about "Mastering weapons". That's new to this game and I can't tell what you're supposed to do to be able to master a weapon. Is it how many enemigos you kill? I seem to have acquired 3 mastering of weapons, but I don't know how I got them...or how I can get more.

Any help please? I want to get some more stinkin' badges!

Thx,
Brad

Reply

Ah, never mind about the stinkflowers. I just remembered the ladder spear.

(Sure is a pain dragging both the spear and a cutting weapon through the entire level, though.)

Reply

Brad,

In your Arsenal of weapons, you can see a meter on the left side of each weapon's image. You also see this meter when you have a weapon equipped in game. This slowly fills up yellow as you kill enemies with a weapon, and each weapon has its own meter. When the yellow reaches the top, you've mastered a weapon and it's 50% stronger. I don't think the rate is the same for each weapon, for example for me the butterfly net of all things took the quickest to master. Some weapons may take many more kills. But I think it only matters that you get the kill shot with a weapon, and the number of times you swing/shoot etc at an enemy before it dies doesn't help your meter. Hope this helps!

any suggestions for the first treasure in Level 6 then? Per the walk through it says you need a barrel to jump up and grab the first chain, but that there is no barrels. I've looked all over and can not find anything that can be carried back to the entrance. I shoot the TNT through the small hole on the way down and it destroys the steel crate, i was hoping the steel crate would just drop down after the TNT blows but its a goner.
So how do you get up the side to get to the first treasure please??

In Whiplash Rapids, to get to the third hidden treasure, I have an alternative to the suggestion in Jay's walkthrough--

As an an alternative to the suggestion in the walkthrough of using the flip steps all the way up, one can use a ladder spear, go up along the right side of the screen, then go accross to the treasure once above the swinging spiked balls.

Any tips on how to beat Dumbbell quickly to get the time achievement for that level? I cannot seem to figure out what weapon to use that will kill him quickly enough! It is the only one I haven't got that achievement for!

Reply
hothotpot April 5, 2012 3:47 PM

Okay well, I finally managed to defeat Dumbbell in under 4:45, so I got the achievement. This was very difficult for me so here are a few tips for anyone struggling with it.

I find the most effective weapon against him is a whip. It allows you to keep your distance but strike with accuracy. With that in mind, I saved up enough to purchase the cat o' nine tails, since that is the strongest whip, and then went through some other levels until I mastered it. Then I equipped it as my starting weapon and blazed my way through the Port Scamwell level as quickly as possible. My strategy for time runs is always to avoid fighting as much as possible, just jumping over baddies and only killing those who really get in my way.

Now luckily, there is a check point RIGHT before you enter the battle with Dumbbell. This is very, very fortunate. You might consider this cheating a bit, but what I did once I got to the check point was to immediately "restart" the level. Instead of starting me at the beginning, it takes back right to that checkpoint, with your starting weapon equipped at full capacity, at whatever time you had when you got to the checkpoint. SO! I was able to enter the battle with a fully loaded weapon at about 2:11. This ended up being plenty of time for me and I was able to beat him and make the time achievement.

That's how I did it, anyway.

How to get the jailbreak challenge:

You don't need a weapon. On level 8 Port Scamwell, take a parrot cage to a swinging spiked ball that's alreadly there, hanging from the ceiling. It can harm you as well.

All the clowns for level 5

1: Get onto the 8th carraige with some explosives (a fuse bomb can be found in the 2nd screen). Blow up the breakable blocks on the 7th carraige to get to the first Hobo Clown.

2: On the last carraige before the second screen, there's a barrel rocket. Take it to the edge and ride it up to the roof.

3: Get into the 3rd carraige on the second screen and use the sideways barrel rocket to break through the blocks on the bottom level of the 4th carraige. The clown will be there with a chicken and some flowers.

4: Behind the barrels on a ledge of carraige 8 of the second screen, there is a barrel rocket. Jump up and get it and throw it down.
Break the first set of blocks above and there you will find Clown #4.

5: When you have defeated the Railbenders, go back to the last carraige and get some cherry bombs from the luggage. Go into the Railbenders carraige and onto the highest platform, in the middle. Jump throught the roof, go left over the smokestacks and onto the roof of the last carraige. Jump up lightly and blow up the blocks above your head. Go into the hidden room to find the last Hobo Clown.

For Area 6, the 3rd treasure, you don't need a bazooka. I jumped up to the spot with the wood crate and got the TNT from inside. I then jumped up to the high spot and threw the TNT up which broke the blocks and dropped the rocket to go up to the treasure.

Can someone please be a good friend and please tell me where all the ziplines are in level 2 Dustbin Road?

This is such a fun game so far. I'm almost done and I've completed 98%. The only complaint I have is that once I got to about 90% the only badges I had left were the ones which required me to master all the weapons. So I had to spend several hours repeatedly hacking away at enemies just to get the last few percentage points. A huge blemish on an otherwise exceptional game.

I do have one tip to speed up the process of mastering all the weapons.

Go to area eleven (whiplash rapids) and go to the save point immediately before the rumble battle at the enemigos hideout. If you quit the game, it will save any progress you make mastering your weapons.

Buy any weapons you want to upgrade from the arsenal menu. Then go back to area elven and you will load at the rumble battle. Take the weapon into the battle and use it until it runs out. Continue to quit and reenter area eleven until the weapon is mastered. It will still take forever to master all the weapons but this should save a little time.

Easy way to get +60 badge

Go to level "Southwind Express"
Go to boxcar that has stacked boxes with a guitar enimigo (it's 3rd or 4th car).
Kill all enimigos there - especially the ones carrying the chainsaws (2 of those will appear). Make sure to send either of those two into the stratosphere so you can get the chainsaw (most likely they will drop it before then).

Now go to the next box car (it will be the one that has a small central platform with a lantern enimigo).

The goal is to pace killing them with the chainsaw and not taking any hits. After nipping each of the 4 enimigos with the saw in the lower part of the boxcar, jump quickly up to the top of the car via the platforms on the left and start jumping back and forth nipping every enimigo that drops down on you (mostly they will be whip and other chainsaw enimigos). Be sure after killing the first guy (the one with the revolver) to jump right to the top of the heap and kill the lantern guy. Then pace yourself as you slay the whip and saw guys. When they are all dead run to the next car along the roofs and keep killing guys. By the time you get to the boxcar where you have to drop down (where the rocket is) your chainsaw will have run out. You should also have gotten +60 easily by that point (I racked up over a +90 that way).

Hope this helps!

I found one way to get the "Take that and that" badge - go to level 11 to the "rumble" area. Be sure to pick up a power ball from one of the enimigos that attack you just outside that area.

When you get into the first combat arena, throw a bunch of balls so they're bouncing all over (enimigos take hits from these). Throw until you run out of balls. Pick up another weapon when one is dropped. Now when you kill the next enimigo, he'll be juggled by one of the balls, you have to then hit him again with whatever weapon you have to juggle him again, then drop the weapon to hit him with your bare hands for one last juggle.

Any contained area would work where you can have a number of the power balls bouncing around while fighting a horde of enimigos. Between the balls and your bare hands, you only have to pick up/drop one weapon to juggle an enimigo with 3 different items.
