Weekday Escape

GrinnypChristmas is a stressful time. The dread of family get-togethers, the apprehension that you won't be able to find the one perfect present, the fear that you won't be able to afford any presents (thanks economy), the horrible crowds at every shopping center, the whining children ("I want that one!"), the snarled traffic, those bell-ringing Santas blocking you wherever you go. Don't you just wish sometimes that it would all just go away? Okay, calm down, take a deep breath, we have a solution. Sit down and spend five minutes with Beard of Santa, a cute, surreal little room escape by Minoto.

beardofsanta_screenshot.gifWell, technically this isn't a room escape. Or any kind of escape, really. Except, perhaps, an escape from all the stress of the Holiday season, or from reality itself. Taking place in the most surreal house ever, where you turn from the living room to get to the garden, and from the garden to get to the kitchen, Beard of Santa is a quest. A quest to take revenge on the jolly fat elf who is making your life so miserable right now. Or maybe a quest to help him, who can tell?

Navigate through this topsy turvy space with the help of large arrows at the top sides of the screen. Click on everything to see what you can pick up. Click on an item in your inventory then click on the blue bar with a question mark to discover what exactly that item is. And please, you absolutely must use the "about item" question mark to examine everything you pick up. Trust me, you need to. Who knew Santa was that heavy? There's no changing cursor, but everything that you can pick up or use is pretty obvious on the screen.

Done up in Minoto's usual cutesy style, Beard of Santa looks lovely in its hand drawn, washed out pastel style. Thrill to the kitty gymnastics, marvel at Santa's other talent, and just enjoy yourself immensely for the five minutes or so that this little gem will take to complete.

Analysis: Where to even begin? Salvador Dali would have adored this game, it is that bizarre. Breezy, fun, cute casual gameplay at its finest. Okay, this is not the most difficult room escape ever featured here in Weekday Escape. Sometimes you just need a little something to brighten your day, don't you? Beard of Santa is guaranteed to do that. The end goal is a bit obscure, but hey, who needs logic all the time?

The only thing that would have made this experience better would be a bouncy holiday tune playing in the background as you watch in amazement some of the things this game does. Is it difficult or challenging? No. What Beard of Santa is, though, is the perfect mid-week pick-me-up, especially at this time of year. Fire up this little gem and learn what you've always suspected: cats are good gymnasts, raccoons are helpful gardeners, composting is good for the environment, and Santa really does suck sometimes, doesn't he?

  • Turn left.

  • Pull up one of the pieces (peaces?) into close up.

  • Put the second piece on the first.

  • That cannister on the floor is a composter.

  • Open the composter, put in the mushroom piece, and close it.

  • Take the resulting mulch and turn right.

  • Put the mulch on the garden plot and watch the happy racoon come by to dig up everything.

  • Once the racoon is gone take the hanger.

  • Turn right twice until you are back to Santa.

  • Put the hanger on the bar above Santa and watch him fly!

  • Ooops.

  • Take the broken bar.

  • Turn left three times until you are back at the couch.

  • Once the cat is off the couch lift the right couch cushion and take the object.

  • A sharp razor, hmmm? Oh Santa...

  • Turn right three times to go back to Santa.

  • Shave Santa's beard.

  • Peace out!

OH jeez, someone wrote a full review of a Minoto game? I think hell just froze over! his Engrish is priceless though!

Reply

I got the

cute end...what other endins are there?

really fun and extremely quick...3 minutes.

Reply

Just got the cut end after:

shaving Santa. Didn't want to that though.

Reply

this is the first escape ive made it through with no help. it only took a painfully simple game and about a year >.

nerdypants December 9, 2009 2:15 AM

That was... baffling.

Why did I shave Santa?

Are there other endings? The one I got says "Cut end", but then it says "only one method".

Even I did not need a walkthrough - makes me feel almost cheated! Great little game, although un peu bizarre - can we have another one please - I usually have to spend all day on these! Think of it as an early xmas present........ please ......

Reply

I must be really dumb, because I can't even solve the puzzles now o_o

It's about time!

I've been enjoying Minoto games for ages now -- just hard enough to think about, but simple enough to do quickly in just a few minutes. Glad to see you've put them on JIG.

Part of the charm is the Engrish and the occasionally strange puzzles -- keep 'em coming, Minoto!

well,it's pretty easy,but's here's a walkthrough anyways.

take the pump on the floor.

move to the right.First click the bushes in the lower left corner to get a piece of a board, then open the cabinet.

use the pump on the container.you should get a CAN.

move to the right.click on top of the machine.

use the can on the machine, and close the hole. The bag should now pop, revealing Santa inside.

click on Santa and proceed to the right.

Use santa on that big mess in front of you.he should clean it right up.

Oh look!the other piece of the board..pick it up,and join the two pieces.{click one of the pieces in your inventory,click the "?" button.An enlarged picture of that piece should appear.click the other piece,then click on the enlarged picture of the piece.sorry if that was unclear.:P}

now you have a board. But first, click Santa, and he should go on top of that chair.now go to the left, and give it to the guy holding that knife.

Now get that "garbage" that the guy just cut off.move to the left twice.

open up the recycling bin.now click the garbage, then click the bin.Close the bin,and it should recycle your garbage.pick up your new soil.

move to the right.use your soil on that patch of land.take the suspender that suspiciously looks like a hanger.Go to the right twice.use the "suspender" on the stick of iron above santa.he should break the iron bar.now get the bar of iron in the middle.

go to the left three times.use the stick of iron on those poles to the right of the cat.now click the right cushion of that couch.pick up the razor.

go right three times.shave santa!THE END.the cut end,anyways.

Heh!
A cat doing chin-ups and a Santa that gives the peace sign after having his beard shaved and...
"It united into one when uniting it".

I love Minoto's games, and this one is as cute as the rest.

Reply

How's this so easy for everyone? I've been pixel hunting for 15 minutes! I have Santa and a "Peace"

Reply
fattywads December 9, 2009 7:59 AM

If there is more than 1 ending it will say "one ending of two" or something at the end.

@ accro

Theres a whole archive over at eric's site, but they wont let me link to it, despite the fact that they seem to borrow a lot of his game finds on this site... so you'll have to find it yourself. Luckily its still on the front page...

Aww...that was pretty easy. The only thing I needed help was with the

second puzzle piece, which was

behind the bushes in the garden

Reply

What do you mean, sonicrules? Of course this is an escape game. An escape from the tyranny of beards!

Reply

YAY! you guys finally reviewed a Minoto game!!

Reply

Okay, people who got the "cute end", how did you do it? I got the "cut end".

Reply

Well, that was... ... ...strange. Amusing, yes...but strange.

Reply

Very easy, quite bizarre, but thoroughly enjoyable! The ending just cracked me up.

sonicrules December 9, 2009 6:20 PM

for one thing you're not escaping, you're doing random things
(p.s. not trying to be mean)

Reply
TheMusicGirl December 9, 2009 7:16 PM

I like that when you click on the hanger and the question mark...

it says, "Suspender"!

Reply

Ummm... I have no idea why I did any of the things I did. I wasn't really even paying attention, I was just clicking things. But I didn't not like it I guess...

Reply

That was surreal but I loved it. (Some days surreal is really preferrable to logical). Thank you for reviewing it!

Reply

...and now I've discovered all the other small escape games on that site. Three Child Pigs at http://mac.rash.jp/games/dasyutu/62/en/index.html is WONDERFUL.

Reply

LOL, it's the only japanese "escape the room" game, that i finished without solution.

Reply

Loved this game! Short and sweet and very lovely graphics. Highly random yet strangely intuitive at the same time.
