PsychotronicFifty Comedies50 Comedies asks you to identify the titles of fifty movies (of the comedic variety) based on visual puns. Just scroll around the collage full of oddities and mutants, and click on a clue when you think you might know what film it represents. Good for movie buffs, trivia toughs, and fans of fun, light-hearted stuffs.

There are some baffling interface problems, especially for such a simple program. You have to type all your answers in lower case, and you can't press enter to input a guess. You have to switch back to the mouse and click the Enter button. When you scroll off the edge of the picture and then back, the screen jerks like a kitten dreaming about a gerbil farm. On top of all that, the image is blurry, which I think is supposed to represent film grain, but actually looks like it's been Xeroxed a few dozen times and then chewed up by weasels.

Still, we found ourselves addicted to the clever puzzles and the challenge to our cinemaphile sensibilites, so we are sharing this set of 50 devious, obvious, and curious riddles with you. If the scrolling bothers you, try the image-only version of the game here. Have fun!

I recall seeing a couple of games like this: the M&M's Dark Movies, in which you have to find the 50 hidden "Dark" movies; and also an advertisement for a music store, that had about 70 bands to identify (here). Never found more than ten in any of those, though!

The people who make this stuff are either geniuses, or just plain crazy xD

That was fun! a couple of suggestions:

After I completed all 50(counted them up) I was expecting some sort of success message

I liked that when you solved each puzzle, a number appeared on the bottom - to make it even better it would have been nice if we could have clicked on that number to see where that puzzle was. Since the number placement was fairly random it was hard to remember which ones were which.

love it, #2 made my brain hurt in a good way :D

For those of us with a measely grasp of Flash but a love of creating games, this is the easiest way to work it. There's a whole lot of technomumble involved in creating a way to submit information with the Enter key.

Reply

escape velocity - it's the little details that separate a 'good' game from a 'great' one.

And utilizing the 'enter' key to submit information in Flash is a lot easier than you may think.

The game was okay, the review was great! Very funny and perfect descriptions!

Reply

I enjoyed this one -- I did not like that it didn't recognize capital letters though. "Bad News Bears" should be just as acceptable as "bad news bears" but it is not.

Reply

That's another easy one to handle for the user.

Just use the actionscript function: String.toLowerCase().

Convert the user's input to lowercase first, then compare.

Simple.

Reply

It was good, but there were a few movies I've never heard of and I agree with the comments about capitals. I started randomly at #48 but capitalised the first letter of the answer. When it said I was wrong, I didn't know what was going on, I couldn't for the life of me think what else that clue could be. Luckily I quickly twigged that the game was after lowercase answers and it does say in the instructions, so I guess I should learn to read. :D

Reply

Wow, thanks for the Flash tips! :) The only thing I could find on solving that problem was waaaaay over my head.

Reply

Is anyone else finding this game's website just not loading for them?

Reply

Me too. I just get a blank page :(

Reply
awooga124 March 12, 2009 7:01 AM

I keep getting a proxy error or something. Is something up with the website it's from?

Reply

what is most annoying about this game is the poor image quality. Many of the visual jokes are lost because I wasn't willing to press my face up to the screen to try and figure out what these mushy images are supposed to represent.

examples:
(these are not spoilers since they would be obvious if the image was clear)
*one of the figures on top of the corner building is dressed like Napoleon
*the thing falling (or flying) with a TV is Superman
*the goldfish is smiling and it has extra gills
*the lady on the lawn is holding a letter over her head, not an iron
*etc. etc.

The jokes were tricky enough to make it quite hard - I just wish I could see them...

Reply

Way too many of these comedies were recent fare and haven't really had the time necessary to be digested into the subconscious. I think these kind of puzzles work best when the images in question are "classics" or recognizable by name to a lot of people.

Reply
alitlweird March 14, 2009 1:56 AM

i'm not Jewish, but i have to agree with the insensitivity regarding "Juno" coulda left that one out and named it "49 comedies". this "game" reminds me of something from games magazine (is that still in print?)
i also must say that most of these representations are quite a stretch... "bad news bears?!" come on... really? i got a few of them (like 5 or 6), but got bored just clicked thru all the "spoiler alerts"

Reply
alitlweird March 14, 2009 2:07 AM

I also agree with Josh. Where's Caddyshack? Where's Ghostbusters? Clever idea. Needs a do-over not using so many garbage movies. (no offense)

Reply

Hey! Great game - I love things that let me test my movie knowledge. My only suggestion (that hasn't been previously mentioned) is a "save" feature! I'd like to finish it on my own with no help and that means taking my time and thinking it over. So, that's my suggestion... save. Don't know if that's complicated programming or not, but it sure would be nice.

I thought this would be easy after reading all that Xanth, but, no, it isn't.

Reply

I have got to admit that this wasn't exactly my cup of tea. When I read the title I thought it was going to be easy, seeing as I'm into comedy films.

But this was a huge let down, what they class as a comedy clearly doesn't appeal to me so I was left stumped with some of the trash titles thrown in.... None of the Monty Python series, no Animal House and it's pretty much most modern 'comedies' which to me just aren't funny.

Hi everybody... I just found out my game had been featured on this site when I was contacted about my broken link... I'm glad it seems to be fairly well received. I do apologize for the screwy navigation. It was a learning experience for me as I don't normally do this type of coding. The same can be said about a victory screen. I just dont have the actionscript knowledge to create something that knows when all 50 have been answered correctly. The graininess of the images was my attempt to make the whole piece look cohesive....(since all the images are just pulled from online the quality varies greatly between them). Now that I know the game is being played I will revisit it and see if I can make it better!

Sorry to those who think some great comedies are missing (Animal House, Caddyshack, etc..) i agree, but couldn't think of a way to represent them that would be both understandable AND difficult...oh well, you can't please all the people all the time. And the monty python movies?? C'mon, you really wanna type in those long titles? Can you think of a way to visually represent "Monty Python's the meaning of life"?

Thanks!

(And for the few who had a problem with the star of david one... come off it :P It's just a visual representation of the word, not a propaganda piece - didn't mean to upset anyone, just thought it worked too well)
