For most of us, waking up in a coffin isn't a great start to our day. The Dead Case is a ghoulish point-and-click mystery that puts you in the spectral shoes of a newly deceased soul, trying to find out how you got that way... and why so many others in town seem to have your exact same problem.

Walkthrough Guide

(Please allow page to fully load for spoiler tags to be functional.)

I LOVED this game the first time around, and it's still fun, although sometimes a little confusing! Here's a walkthrough if anyone needs it:

You hear laughter in the East. Use the hand tool and click on the people. The boy drops the rabbit. Pick it up.

If you move around, you'll start noticing green barriers. These barriers limits your movement around the area. You can increase your limit by scaring children. You can find one at the far bottom right.

Keep going left until you reach a red building with the lights on. Click on the window and talk to the ghost. Exhaust all the topics and head for the church.

The church lights should be blazing. Ask the ghost a question and she'll disappear.

Go left and scare the child. Go to the library and go right to scare another child. Your limit should increase now and you can explore new places.

Start by going to the far left bottom. Click on the burnt down house and pick up the photograph. Note: If you come across the fountain, you can click it, but you won't be able to do anything with the eyes once you get them.

Now look out for the hospital (the large blue building with an open window) and click on the window with the light on. Talk to the ghost.

At the far top right corner, you'll find a house with the window open. Go in and pick up the candle.

Now go down towards the school. Talk to the ghost.

Go down and take the candle from the treehouse.

After talking to all the ghosts, return to the library and talk to the Library ghost.
He'll have some books on the table for you to research.

Now go left and look for a fountain. Pick up the eyes in it, if you haven't already.

Go up and head right until you see the passed out drunk. Pick up the beer can.

At this point, you'll need to take notes. Take note of any names you come by while talking to the ghosts. These are important!

First stop, head for the church. Give the ghost the wedding photo. She'll fade away. Leave and re-enter. Talk to her again, and write down the yellow name - Marion Toberen.

Now go to the hospital. Give the beer can to the ghost, and talk to him. Write down the name in yellow - Stephen Marks.

Travel to the schoolyard Talk to the ghost first, then give her her eyes.
Talk to her again, then give her the rabbit doll. Talk again and remember to take note of the names - Rebecca Halloway & Emily Halloway.

After this, go back to the library. Talk to the ghost, and you should find out his name - Ivan. He'll tell you to find the 3 highest points of the ghost's areas and to place lit candles there.

You should have 2 candles already. In case you don't, the two candles are at the tree house south of the school and the house with the open window north of the school.

Go to the grave you started at, and move up to see that there are flowers and a candle on another grave. Pick up the candle and head for the church.

Use the unlit candles on the lit ones.

Place the three candles in the following locations: the cross on top of the church, on top of the red circle on the school's swing set, and the hospital's roof.

Return to the library ghost. Say you're ready and watch. You will be given the password DEEPNET.

You will be in the basement of the burned house. Pick up the skull.

Go back to the library and talk to the ghost. He'll tell you to go to the grave you started at. You'll see a girl leaving. Use the eye icon on the grave and note the name -
Adam Smith.

Talk to the library ghost again. Now is the interesting detective part.
Head for the police station and go in.

Use the computer. And investigate the ghosts' pasts by entering their names in all caps. As you investigate, you'll come across new names. Investigate them all - Greg Toberen, Rick Madison, and Michael Madison.

Once you've done that, talk to all the ghosts again. Now you'll need to help the ghosts find redemption.

Start with the school ghost (Rebecca): North of the school, you'll see the children gathered. Click on them, go down, click on the ghost, go back up. Once she scares the children, give her the rabbit.

Now, go find the hospital ghost (Stephen), to the left of the hospital. He'll go back to the room. Talk to him. That's it.

Finally, go see the church ghost (Marion), and give her the skull.

Go to the far top left. You'll see Marion burn a house down and a man will run out on fire. Follow him until he disappears.

Go down once and man will take pictures. Follow him until he enters a house.

Go to the library and talk to the ghost (Ivan) Get some advice and return to the house the photographer went in. The window's now open.

Look at the pictures, and note the address - 17 School Rd.

Go all the way down and left one scene. The new password is CARDINAL.

Enter the house, and then leave and see the man walks in.

Stop Marion from burning the house and then go in.

Click on the man once he finishes talking.

When the man looks around, click Marion., and then man's right arm (the one holding the gun. Click on the girl

Congratulations! You're done!

Wow, I played this game some time ago and really enjoyed it. Time to see if I have as much trouble finding the solution today as I did 2 years ago!

Thanks for bringing this game back from the grave!

This game is way old. Glad you put it up here, because I really wanted to play it again, but couldn't find it!

I played this game ages ago, at least two years. I remember the story in almost stark detail, so I probably won't go through it again. However, it is a fantastic game.

Oh, and Dora, you have earned the position of favorite JiG reviewer.

Permit me to chime in with the other souls who remember this excellent game from years ago. One of those which really got me into online gaming, and it's appropriate that it's now reviewed here.

Reply

To stop Greg:

Enter the house

Leave the house

Click on Marion. Tell her not to burn the house

Click on Marion again

Enter the house

Click Greg's head

Click on his arm while he is distracted. It should now be on fire.

Click on the gun

Enjoy your afterlife!

Enjoyed it. :) Didn't need any walkthroughs this time, but that's mainly 'cause you know where all the ghosts are most of the time. XD Didn't enjoy scouring for that third candle though. -.-;

Seems like a lot of people have seen this. Glad this was reviewed so those of us who never have could enjoy it!

I wish there were a way to replay the ending without redoing the game, I think I missed something as it was flashing by.

The trick to navigating the map is to realize you move in a grid. That made everything easier for me to find.

Whoa! I remember this game! Loved it!

Well, I'd never seen this game before. And it was actually very nice, despite being a bit sceptical when I first started playing. 4/5.

This game is easily playable with the in game hinting system.

Long time reader, first time poster...

Holy bleeping bleep. I played this game what feels like forever ago...it must have been at least three years ago, and I loved it so much. A little while later, I was unable to find it anywhere on the net, like it disappeared. You have no idea how happy I am to see you guys have reviewed this game. Cheers to everyone else who remembers this with as much fondness as I do!

Reply

Hmmm... I've got an idea. How about you give the player something to actually do on all the different screens to keep their interest? I'll pass on this one...

I'm having trouble with several parts of the game

What I have done:

Talked to the ghosts, picked up the first two candles, picked up the doll and the eyes, picked up the photo, scared the children

What I can't do

Talk to the ghost in the church a second time, get the beer, give the items to the ghosts

I remember playing this years ago too.

One of my biggest complaints was/is that they introduce the idea of drawing power from acts like scaring children, but you only do this once or twice and then never come back to the concept. Other then that, it's a good game.

Holy CRAP! I swear this game is from around 2001-2003, I remember playing it on "Bonus".com. I've been looking for it everywhere!

Candle locations:

On a grave in the graveyard, in the treehouse in the south-eastern corner, inside the house at the north-east corner.

Honestly, only one thing in this game scared me:

When you encounter Greg photographing the graveyard.

I wasn't expecting it, just poofing along and BOOM, paparazzi.

Also, how come only you and Marion get special powers? She can shoot fireballs, you can... creep people out by touching them, but neither Stephen nor Rebecca does anything cool.

Plus, their forms don't match their deaths. If Rebecca hanged herself, why does it look like she drowned? If Stephen died of internal bleeding, why does he look like (and think) he died of poisoning?

Reply

no one has any walkthroughs?

[Edit: We're working on it. Check back a little later today. :) -Jay]

Reply

First, Where's the Hospital ghost after you fail to open the gate?

And Arainami, Rebecca is blue because she was depressed and I guess she cried. Her child died at 2 months. She now has a hole in her soul, the red splat, from where her memories of her baby stays.
Idk about the Hospital dude.

ok thanks Jay. don't want to be annoying or bug anyone. :)

Wow, I remember playing this one a loooong time ago, but I found it too complicated back then, and gave up before finding the church ghost... I'm glad it was reviewed here, otherwise I'd have missed a great game.

In the second part after the

gate doesn't work

I am at the point where I have

looked at all the names at the police station:
Adam Smith
Dana Chess
Rebecca Holloway
Emily Holloway
Stephen Marks
Rick Madison
Michael Madison
Marion Toberen
Greg Toberen

I had to peek at the walk through and I can speak to the

playground ghost - Rebecca Holloway

But where are the

children???

She is supposed to

scare some children but there are none there.

What am I doing wrong?

Reply

Spelling the names correctly makes a big difference!

Now I can't get to the

third part. How do you "look" at the pictures in the house?

Answer to my above question??

is...

select the eyeball instead of the hand to "SEE" things. Oh DUH.

Thank you for posting this here!!

I have not heard of or played this game before. Very nice. 5 stars from me.

No Dora. That comes after. The part I'm stuck on says:

Keep going left until you reach a red building with the lights on. Click on the window and talk to the ghost. Exhaust all the topics and head for the church.

The part you said I need to find comes at the end. I need to go to the first part before I can go there.

Reply

This game is confusing. :( Could someone post a walkthrough with simpler directions like "go left to here" or go right and up" etc. because I get lost as there is no map and 99% of the time I lose my way. Thanks.

Reply

Well, it would seem there are only a handful of us who have never played this game before. I have to admit though, I'm not sure that the main character's ghostly form reflects being shot. Still, great game, only had to use the walkthrough for finding the last candle.

Reply

oh well :( guess i'll never finish this.

Reply

Paul

There is a map. It's in the help section. The building you're looking for is the library in the lower left.

Reply

well i'm still confused but i'll try it once more i guess.

Reply

i can't find the

passed out drunk.

Anyone know?

Reply

Never mind. Anyway, I got it up to

Talk to the flaming ghost before she sets flame to the house, and she wasn't in the church. I did everything in the walkthrough up to that point. About the only thing that didn't happen was the library ghost was supposed to say his name was Ivan, but no name was brought up so if this was the problem, I'm out of luck. But I did everything 100% up to that point. I typed in everyone's name that I was supposed to and everything. Even the new names. :(

I guess this game is not for me.

Reply

Hmmm...so I've wandered around in a very small circle, hitting a bunch of arrows that don't go anywhere (or block me). If I open the map/help, the only way I've found to close it restarts the entire game and then I go back around in the same tiny little circle. No ghosts. Sigh.

I adore this game! i had never seen it before today, which surprises me since i have loved Flash games for a long time.
