Help The Hero! guide

How To Play

The game has two parts:

  • In the first you have to take equipment and place it in your inventory. The trick is to rotate the items (using the arrow keys or WASD) and combine items (for example, arrows go in quivers and both go with the crossbow). If an item can combine, its background will turn purple. Try and fit as much gear into the grid.

  • In the second you must equip your hero by dragging equipment to his slots. When he goes to battle, each of the four stats - attack, defense, magic and range - will be matched against the enemy's. The aim is to have a higher stat and win at least three out of four stat categories. So if you want a high attack, equip more attack items such as swords. An enemy is rated on what they are strong and weak at. Always aim to outdo the strong stat and then every other stat before getting to the weak.

Tips

  • Focus on what a monster is strong on, not weak.

  • Aim to balance at least three stats.

  • There is no need to take everything, but selling excess items will get you more gold. Primarily focus on the stats you want to bolster.

  • Clicking on an item on the conveyer belt will send it to the back of the visible queue.

  • Remember to rotate and combine items.

  • The amount of ammo you equip to a range weapon affects its rating.

  • Before starting a battle, sell everything you haven't equipped.

  • Gold can be used to buy more equipment slots and inventory space.

It has a glitch. In the final fight I sold my stuff for more grid space and went in with nothing but magic beans (potion). I got duly slaughtered but the game finished, telling me I'd won. But I enjoyed the game up until that point. Wish you could turn the music off.

I thought the music was very tasteful.

But yes, I have had the same experience where the victory screen ending the game is shown regardless of the outcome of the final fight.

Major bug which could potentially make or break the climax of the final fight for some people. Those people would have to be at a certain point on the learning curve of the game and lower, so I would expect a fix if it is a widespread problem.

Pretty straightforward; I won on the first try, losing no battles (though with one lucky tiebreaker early on). The Tetris/OCD aspect of packing just one more big item is reminiscent of loading a dishwasher -- in a good way!

Man, what unappealing voice acting. And boy was it annoying having it guess wrong where I was clicking. It would be nice if, when you drop a new object on top of old ones, instead of saying "doesn't fit" and sending the new item back to the conveyor belt, it kicked out the old ones. It's silly to have to drag items to sell to the rectangle on the left -- let us hit "S" on them or something.

A stratagem:

Since you only need to win 3 out of 4 categories, skip one entirely; I always gravitated away from "Range". Makes me think there should be a game about gerrymandering.

This was a really unique and interesting game.

I came across another bug in the equip screen where I'd unequip an item from the hero and put it back on the grid, but it would be unselectable afterwards and looks slightly askew, not snapping to the squares of the grid. It didn't hurt me too much, but I can imagine it might be bad if it kept happening with strong items I wanted to equip or valuable items I wanted to sell.

Reply

Whaa... ?!? You don't get to see the fight so you have no idea what is or isn't working. There is no carry-through between levels so just sell anything you're not using now - what kind of strategy is that???

Boooring is the word. I gave up after the second battle. Bleah.

CJ, in your listing I noticed the lack of Musket Pouch in the ranged. Essentially a Slingshot Pouch or a Quiver for a Musket. Also, there's a typo in the Slingshot Stone. It says it combines with Slingshot Stone rather than Slingshot Pouch.

You got a few things wrong CJ:

Halberd is 5 attack. You forgot the sword which is 3. I think Club or dagger is 1/2. Katana might be 2 or 2 1/2? Think Helmet is also 2 1/2.

Ammo by itself CAN boost your power. The effect is minimal, but try it with a full musket bag or catapult bag and you should notice a difference. I believe it's 1/4 as effective.

A fun game, but too easy, especially the last few levels which don't really increase in difficulty. I'd thought the final boss would have all 1 away from max or something. Why even have the max that high if you never even need it? Also, you can purchase out on upgrades far before the end without having to replay anything.

I feel like this game has a lot of potential could be a lot bigger, maybe on par with good match-3 games.

CJ, nice list. I will note, however, you also left off the sword from the the attack items.

Sword: Good slashing power. (Sells for 40 gold, 2 Attack)
