Color - Kotorinosu
Check out this early effort from the great room escape designer Kotorinosu. While Color is a pretty basic, bare-bones escape it is definitely worth the effort, especially to see the genesis of what would come later. Even in this early design there are hints of the clever puzzles and solutions which would eventually make them one of the most popular room escape designers we've ever featured. Time to learn some color theory!

I can't get the colour button safe or the leaf drawer.
The number of leaves by either colour or size doesn't seem to work.
There are numbers on the rubik's cube, but I don't know what they might go to. I think the light switch/TV has something to do with it but I think I need a remote for these batteries.
@Oghre - I cannot get the 3-number drawer to open, though I think I am entering in the right numbers.
As for the 6-colour safe:
there are two - if you mean the red safe on the shelf, combine the clues of the paper in the TV-drawer, and the rubik's cube. And look for the second one! Once you find it, look for letters around the room, and match the colours you find them with to a channel on the TV.
All right. Even more stuck on the safes, since I apparently can't even decipher the Rubik's cube clue.
I have:
A key (with colored markings on the back, used to open the right TV cabinet drawer), two batteries, a star (placed), and a hexagon (placed).
I have also found:
A single letter on each of the four walls, one on the ceiling, and a spot for one on the floor, though that spot needs cleaning.
For the 3-digit code:
Per above comments, I looked at the colors of the leaves, and got the following numbers: 4, 5, and 8. However, no permutation of those numbers works!
Definitely a 5 mushroom game if it were not for the pixel hunting. I particularly dislike two different hotspots on one small object.
It took me forever to realize clicking on the top of the trashcan got me inside, rather than just moving it.
On another note, for quite awhile I have been wondering why people complain about games not being accessible to color-blind players, but not about sound based puzzles that rule out deaf players. I am all for accessibility, but why the concern only for one group?
I am not deaf, but prefer to play with my own music in most cases, so it is nice when a reviewer at least notes that sound is important.
Could someone just post a walkthrough already? Jeez.
I was stuck at the clock, putting in the endless permutations of red and green and blue numbers I've seen so far in this game... and then the light suddenly switched on, at 9-7-3 (or 9:35:05?). I honestly do not remember ever seeing that before. Also, the remote became unusable, so I'm assuming that solved the TV puzzle somehow?
Also
Where do I find the square shape for the box in the drawer under the TV? At least some hint would be good.
Okay, something is wrong with the controls in this game.
For one thing, the first time you get something in your inventory, you can't flip it over to look at the other side. You have to back out of your inventory, bring up the magnifying-glass view again, and then you can rotate it or whatever.
It took me eons to figure this out. I couldn't put the batteries in the remote at first, or flip over the keys to look at the code, or flip over the plate from the safe door... it's just frustrating.
Also, the first time I tried to look around the room with the lights off, it wouldn't let me. I didn't even know that was possible.
Solycat:
You have a hint right in your spoiler about the clock...
You wrote
"and then the light suddenly switched on".
Back in the other room, there's a clue on the TV about
turning a light OFF.
The numbers for the clock that you stumbled upon could have been found by
turning the tv to the light clue and then turning off the room light.
This game is miserable.
What second room?
The leaf clue and the tree: There were 7 medium green leaves, 4 light green leaves, and 5 dark green leaves. There were 5 small leaves, 9 long leaves, and 3 fat leaves. WHAT kind of math gets you 521????
The hints on the TV - the room with the middle drawer pulled out and the books rearranged - so I opened the middle drawer and rearranged the books and ... and ... What? I looked in the place where the X is and shockingly --- nothing is still there.
I give up. This was a real time waster.
@4red3s, the X on the TV:
I didn't get this until you finally told me what to look for... but if we are trying to get the room to look like how the TV shows it, then
The laptop needs to be open, too.
I'm nearly out, but I'm afraid I'm not up to a walkthrough right now. Hopefully somebody else is, soon.
My first ever walkthrough! Hope this helps. Let me know if I've left anything out. I wasn't sure how to do nested spoilers, so the exploration sections are huge info dumps.
Exploration
You start off facing the pink wall. You can turn the lights on and off, but leave them on for now. Lovely sweaters hanging there, let's move them around . Aha! You've found an A. You might want to move the sweater on the left a few more times for good measure. Something fell to the ground. Now you've got a hexagon!
Turn right to the blue wall. Move those books on the upper shelf to find an arrow. Click where it's pointed to find your next letter. It might be a good idea to remember the color of the walls where you find each letter. Take a closer look at the safe - the code to open it has been torn off. Back out and then click on the stool - there's something hidden underneath! Click on the Rubik's cube. Notice anything about the colors green, blue, and orange? The bottom desk drawer requires a three digit code to open it. Click to the right of the desk to find a picture of three leaves and an arrow pointing at the front of the desk. That must be a clue for how to open up the lower desk drawer. Back out.
Turn right again to the yellow wall. Click on the plant and notice that some of the leaves look exactly like the leaves in the drawing - color is important! Make a note of how many of each type of leaf from the drawing is on the plant. Oh, and there's another letter. Back out and click on the left drawer below the TV. There's a box with 4 shapes. I bet that hexagon would fit! Use your key on the right drawer to find a battery and the missing code for the safe. Back out and then click on the trash can. There's something on the floor, but you can't see it through all that mess. Click on the top of the trashcan to find another shape.
Turn right again to the green wall. Click on the pillow to find another battery. Look under the bed and you'll find another letter. Back out and then click on the box on the floor. Hmm, after the rain, eh? Kind of looks like a rainbow. What order do those colors go again?
Solving the Puzzles.
Color Code for Safe
Return to the blue wall. You know have all the information needed to open up the color-coded safe.
You know the colors that need to be clicked and their order from the note in the desk drawer.
The numbers spelled out in those colors from the Rubik's cube tell you how many times each of the colors has to be clicked.
For the colorblind, the number/color code is 4-top right button, 7- seven middle left button, 1- bottom left button.
Now you have a remote! Flip it over and open the back compartment, then put the batteries inside. Don't forget to check the compartment on the safe door for another shape!
Bottom Drawer Leaf Puzzle
The numerical code for the bottom drawer corresponds to the number of the different types of leaves from the plant and the order specified in the leaf drawing.
For the color blind, the code is 521. The drawer is now open.Click out to open the drawer and find the eraser.
Turning on TV
Return to the yellow wall and use your remote on the TV. The first shot is of the blue wall, only there's a bright pink arrow pointing at a spot towards the bottom of the wall. Make note of all objects in the picture - you'll have to recreate the scene exactly once you return to the blue wall.
The second shot is the word PASTEL. Hmm, that's the word spelled out by all the letters you found earlier. Maybe the color of the wall where you found the letters corresponds to something?
The next shot is of two lightbulbs, with an arrow indicating that you should turn the light off. Leave that screen on and return to the pink wall and turn off the lights. Now click left and you'll notice another arrow on the wall of the green room indicating a spot to examine. Remember that for when you turn the lights back on. Click left one more time to find that the lights at the bottom of the lightswitch are reflecting onto the TV screen, and the numbers 9 (green) 7 (pink) 1 (blue) are written in the colored circles. Remember the color/number combination.
Click back to the pink wall and turn on the lights. Now you can check out that spot in the green room.
Hidden Compartment on Blue Wall
Click right to the blue wall and check out that spot you found from the scene on the TV. What? There's nothing behind the door.
Remember what the room looked like in the shot. The middle desk drawer was open, the computer was open, and the books on the top shelf were separated. Now click on the compartment.
Ah, another color code. All of the letters scattered around the room can be put together to spell the word PASTEL. Each of the letters is on a different color surface. Spell out the word according to the color of each letter's surface and hit enter to find a key.
For the color blind, click in this order, with the upper-most circle being one: 3, 6, 1, 5, 2, 4.
Rainbow Box
If you haven't already figured this one out and don't know the colors of the rainbow, you can always google it! The song from Mr. Rogers doesn't help.
The colors are red-orange-yellow-green-blue-indigo-violet. For the colorblind, click the first dot 5 times, the second three times, the third two times, the fourth one time, and the fifth four times. You'll hear a click. Back out and claim the last shape.
Box with Four Shapes
You now have all the shapes needed to open the box in the drawer beneath the TV. Open it up and grab the screwdriver.
Second Room
You now have the gold key. Use it to open up the door on the pink wall and enter to find a spotlight on a picture. The picture says Gold+Silver. What do you have that's gold and silver? Click on the small circle on the left to find a clock with no dials.
Gold and Silver Puzzle
Look at each of the keys in your inventory and click on them to turn them over. There are color-coded markings on each of the keys. Combine the markings from both keys to form three numbers.
Enter the code from the keys. For the color blind, the code is 752.
The safe opens and inside are three color-coded dials. There's also a plate secured by screws on the safe door, but you can't get to it until the lights are on.
Turn back to the clock and place the dials on it. Now, where to set them? Remember the code from the TV that showed up when you turned off the lights. Maybe that will work.
For the color blind, place the shortest dial at 9, the middle length dial at 7 and the longest dial at 1.Ah! Now the lights are on.
Return to the wall safe and remove the plate from behind the door with your screwdriver.
Exit Door Puzzle
There are some strange markings on the door that look like letters organized onto a 2x2 grid with colored buttons underneath. What four letter word might those letters spell?
Flip over the plate you just removed and you'll see a code that looks just like the 2x2 grid of letters. The letters of the word correspond to the colors listed in the code. It also says Enter x 3.
Click the colors in the order specified by the letters of the word combined with clue from the grid. Hit enter three times, and you're out!
For the still stuck and the colorblind
The word is OPEN and these are the order to press the colored circles, with the far left dot being one: 2-3-1-4
Walkthrough
A general note - until you actually NEED to rotate an item, you can't. So if things are inexplicably staying "active" in your inventory and don't seem to have a purpose, they may have a use you aren't permitted to observe yet. At least that's how it worked for me. Just be patient.
Go around, make observations and collect things:
First room with the PINK wall, LOCKED DOOR and sweaters. Click on the sweaters to reveal the LETTER A..
Continue to click on the sweaters until the HEXAGON falls out.
There's a light switch there. It works, we'll come back to it.
Click to the left for the room with the GREEN wall and the bed.
Click on the pillow to collect BATTERY #1. Click under the left side of the bed for the LETTER T.
Click on the green box on the floor - it's a puzzle, we'll come back to that.
Click to the left for the room with the YELLOW wall, the TV, plant and wastebasket. Click on the plant for the LETTER P. Note the shapes of the leaves, we'll need those.
Click on the TOP of the wastebasket to see the contents - collect the SQUARE. Go back and then click on the body of the wastebasket to move it - note it's all smudged underneath, we'll come back to that.
Click on the left drawer - see the SHAPE-LOCK BOX to open it - we'll come back to that. Click on the right drawer, it's locked - we need a key.
Click left to the room with the BLUE wall. Lots to see here.
Clicking on the top two drawers shows you they're empty; the third drawer needs a 3 number code to open it - we'll come back to that.
Clicking on the Rubik's cube gives you a view of the cube. We'll come back to it.
Clicking on the mug makes it go up and down; clicking on the laptop makes the top open and close.
Click on the stool, collect the SILVER KEY.
Click on the books, they move. Note what you find.
Click on the safe. It has six colors and it looks like a piece of paper has been ripped off of it. We'll come back to that later.
Click on the right side of the desk. You will find a picture of three leaves and an arrow pointing to the bottom drawer. It's a clue for the drawer, we'll come back in a minute.
Click on the left side of the shelves near the top - observe the LETTER E.
Click on the left side of the shelves near the bottom - there's a panel there with nothing behind it.
Go back to the first wall, turn off the lights and take a spin around the room. Note that the TV has some colors on it, and in the room with the bed, there's an arrow pointing to the upper left corner.
You can't click anywhere while the lights are off, so go back, turn them on then click where the arrow pointed - observe the LETTER S on the WHITE ceiling.
Time to start solving puzzles:
Go to the green box by the bed. It reads "After the Rainbow" with a Red R at the beginning, a "Violet"/Purple W at the end, and an arch of five boxes in between. They are looking for the colors of the rainbow in correct order, so enter them here.
For those who somehow escaped the rainbow color/ROY G. BIV lesson in school, it's RED, ORANGE, YELLOW, GREEN, BLUE, INDIGO, and VIOLET/PURPLE. Remember that Indigo is a darker blue.
Collect the STAR.
Take the SILVER KEY and use it on the RIGHT DRAWER of the TV Stand. Collect BATTERY #2 and note the RIPPED PIECE OF PAPER that looks like it belongs on the safe on the shelves.
There are three colors in order GREEN --> ORANGE --> BLUE
Go back to the right side of the desk and note the leaves. They are a medium green small leaf, a very light green tall/skinny leaf, and a dark green large/squat leaf. Where have we seen leaves like this before?
Go back and click on the plant. Count the number of each leaves.
That's 5 of the little leaves, 2 of the skinny leaves, and 1 squat leaf. So the DRAWER CODE is 521.
Open the drawer and retrieve the ERASER. What do you erase? Smudgy marks. Where did we see smudgy marks? Under the wastebasket.
Go back to the wastebasket, move it aside an apply the Eraser. Observe the LETTER L on the BROWN floor.
Okay, we know from the RIPPED PIECE OF PAPER we have a color code for the safe, but clicking on those buttons by themselves does nothing. What else has those colors that we've seen?
The Rubik's Cube. Note that where there are solid colors, they form number like patterns.
A GREEN 4, an ORANGE 7 and a BLUE 1. So press the Green button 4 times, the orange button 7 times and the blue button once.
Collect the REMOTE CONTROL from the safe. Note that there is a panel on the inside of the safe door. Open the panel and collect the TRIANGLE.
Click on the REMOTE CONTROL and insert the TWO BATTERIES. Use the REMOTE on the TV and an image appear of the wall with the TV, and there's an X on the lower left side. Note the room configuration.
The books are separated, the laptop screen is open and the middle drawer is open.
Replicate the room configuration as you saw it on the TV and then click in the lower left by the shelves (where the X) was. You reveal the CIRCLE COLOR SAFE.
So those colors look familiar, right? They're the colors in the room. But that doesn't tell you what order you need to click them. So go back to the TV, it has more to tell you.
Clicking the remote on the TV a second time reveals a whole bunch of pretty colored circles and the word PASTEL. And where have you seen the letters that make up that word? All around the room.
So click the colors in the same order as the word PASTEL
P - Yellow
A - Pink
S - White
T - Green
E - Blue
L - Brown
Open the safe and remove the GOLD KEY.
Go back to the left drawer of the TV Stand to the SHAPE-LOCK BOX - insert the appropriate shapes and retrieve the SCREWDRIVER
Before you use that gold key on the LOCKED DOOR, check out the TV one more time. Clicking on the REMOTE gives you one more screen that indicates you should turn the light off. When you do and go back to the TV, the three color circles you saw before make more sense - They hold numbers - 9 in the GREEN, 7 in the PINK and 1 in the BLUE
Okay, you've opened the door into a mostly darkened room - there's a circle of light coming from one side and projecting on the opposite wall. Clicking on the circle shows a CLOCK with no hands. Clicking on the lighted area of the opposite wall shows another panel/puzzle - "Gold + Silver" and a number/color combo pad.
What do you have that's gold and silver? Your keys. Remember how I said you couldn't examine things until you needed to? Try now.
The backs of both keys have halves of "digital" formed numbers in different colors. You have to combine the numbers to get the correct code.
Green - 7
Blue - 5
Red - 2
Open the safe and collect the CLOCK HANDS. Go place the HANDS on the CLOCK. Note that there's a panel on the door - we'll come back to that.
Note the clock hands have different colored tips - Pink, Green and Blue. Where did we recently see that color grouping? On the TV.
So move the small green-tipped hand to the 9, the middle-sized pink hand to the 7 and the long blue-tipped hand to the 1.
After adjusting the CLOCK HANDS, the lights come on. Yay!
Go back to the "Gold and Silver" panel and re-open the door. Remove the PLATE with the SCREWDRIVER.
One thing left - the final door. Let's take a look.
There are four colored buttons and some sort of weird, squarish code. Now go back to your PLATE and flip it over - there's a quadrant based code on there.
So, knowing your new helpful code is quadrant based, take a look at the door again, this time as a square with four quadrants.
There are four letters
EO
PN
And what do you want the door to do? OPEN.
Use the panel colors to spell out the word,
That would be
Green
Red
Yellow
Blue
and then press the Enter button, then press it the extra 3 times indicated on the panel.
You're out!
OMG lame! The puzzles are great. In particular, I like that they're intuitive -- no random item mixing involved. But the
two different click zones on the trash can
and the
hexagon randomly falling out of the shirts
are EXCESSIVELY LAME. I looked at those objects MULTIPLE TIMES each, and not until I had solved all other problems and used all of my clues and items was I forced to give up and read for hints. LAME LAME LAME.
ALSO, when presenting multiple puzzles with similar formats for the answer, make sure the two answers are significantly different. I solved the
leaf drawer without ever seeing the leaf code on the side of the desk, because I tried the code from the keys on it.
I thought I'd accidentally misread something for a while, and when I DID find out what was happening, I was already past it and it no longer mattered, so the work I did to solve it was wasted effort.
All in all, a well-crafted effort, although the few flaws are big deals, almost deal-breakers. Good puzzles are not enough; one must also consider gameplay and puzzle interaction. Strong in concept, lacking in execution.

You're out!
