Binary is a stylish puzzle game held together by a rudimentary platformer aesthetic. Repair orbiting supercomputers by climbing into the planet's surface and solving sliding-type puzzle games. Though the entire game is only a few puzzles long, if you're not familiar with how each puzzle works, Binary can be quite a challenge to get through.

Walkthrough Guide

(Please allow page to fully load for spoiler tags to be functional.)

A walkthrough here in case someone is stuck:

Note: use [Z] key to exit a puzzle.

p.s Some technique can be used for some puzzles OTHER THAN this game. You just need logical thinking though.

Door on Zone I:

Requirement: Eliminate all dark tile.

  1. Click those tiles that has a dark tile at its left.

  2. Continue till it is solved, or it ends up a dark tile on the very right. On this puzzle however, you won't meet that situation.

  3. If that happened, now you need to change the number of bright tile from odd to even. But, how?

  4. Simply click the leftmost tile, and continue from the second tile, till everything is done.

Note: This technique can definitely use on similar puzzles.

Left machine inside Door I:

Requirement: Fill all 3 circles with the symbol next to them, and fill the middle one with circle symbol.

  1. If you fill 3 in a circle you fail, instead you must fill 4, which means you have to get 2 identical symbols on the middle while the target circle has the 2 remaining symbols, adjacent to each other. Then you can fully fill a circle.

  2. If you can only fill 3, there must be adjacent tiles, on this circle and one of the other 2, that isn't identical, so just grab the 2 the other circle, and put inside that circle to make 2 pairs, and turn 90 degrees.

  3. If you have 2 circles left with the requirement to fully fill it, I guess I don't need to talk much about here. If not, you have to break the remaining circle.

Right machine inside Door I:

Requirement: Fill all rows with the symbol shown.

  1. Fill the top row with the symbol required first. Move the top row to make the spaces for required tile go above the required tile on bottom, and push them up. This is the easiest part.

  2. For the remaining rows, you have to do these things in a row:

    1. Move the required on the left of the column where you want to put it,

    2. move the column on the right of it,

    3. insert the required tile below the rows you've finished,

    4. push them up again.

    5. Repeat until the whole puzzle is completed.

Now Area I is completed. But wait!

Memorise the symbols here. You need it for Area II.

Let's go to Area II. (If you can't go there, remember you can jump using the up arrow key.)

Door on Area II:

Input the symbols you see. Note that it's random for all game, so I can't really tell you what the code is.

Bottom puzzle requirement: turn all tile into cyan.

Well, a harder version than Area I, but not very hard actually.

  1. Do what you do at the door on Area I, and try to clear them as much as possible.

  2. If you ended up leaving a red/cyan on the very right, click on the leftmost tile once, and start again.

  3. If you can get all tiles dark, then it's time for you to change their colors.
    How?

  4. It is possible for all these puzzles:

    • If there are 3k tiles, no edge is needed to be clicked,

    • If there are 3k+1 tiles, 2 edges are all needed to be clicked,

    • If there are 3k+2 tiles, 1 edge are needed to be clicked only.

    (k is an integer)
I hope you figured it out.

Left machine inside door II:

Requirement: Match all tiles as the ring shows, while putting circle symbols into the slot.

  1. Let's finish the right ring first. You need the 3 symbols shown. Sometimes you have 2 required symbols lined up for you, but there are only 1 often. So you need to do the following:

    1. fill the left slot with required symbol,

    2. when trying to swap the circles, make sure symbol on the outer side of the circle is the required symbol,

    3. swap the slot after swapping,

    4. and swap the circle again.

Remember though, you need the circle symbol on the slot on the right circle.
Do this until you get all required symbols on both sides.

  2. Arrange the symbols on the right circle so they match the ring. The left ring must match too at this angle. Memorise it.

  3. Arrange the left circle also. It's not hard, I guess.

Right machine inside Door II:

Requirement: Fill both rings with required tile, which circle symbols go in the intersections and the slots.

  1. You need to form 2 spaces, with 2 tiles between them, in order to put the required tile into. So let's start with the right circle again. Do the following things:

    1. Put unneeded tile into the left slot,

    2. insert it on the 3rd tile counted from another unneeded tile,

    3. move them to the intersection,

    4. do the same for the left, with the required tile, and put it inside.

If you have 1 unneeded tile left, just move it to the intersection and continue the rest.
Again, don't forget those circle tile. You should put it into the left slot before the right ring has finished.

  2. For the left, it's just arranging the symbols. I guess you can do it: you've solved 4 hard puzzles just before this!

And now...
Congratulations! Go back to the ship, jump onto it, and you finished the game!
You learned from it, for sure :D

Surprisingly simple once you understand what you are trying to achieve with each puzzle. A few of the puzzles became a bit tedious once you figure things out, but a great mental exercise nonetheless! ^^

Excellent casual game. That was 15 minutes well-spent. The puzzles were appropriately challenging for the length of the game. I'll probably play it again and I'd love to see a few more like this.

The matrix and the wheels were a nice touch -- they gave the puzzles a Rubik-esque pattern of partial-backtracking.

Excellent puzzles. I would love to have a few more like them. Background music is very soothing, too.

Most of the puzzles became tedious to solve; making buttons so we can rotate/shift things in either direction would have done wonders for that.

Reply

Reminds me of those Obion games (#2 anyway)

Reply

Great puzzles, and excellent atmosphere!

It's a bummer that the game doesn't save your progress, though. As it's been noted, the puzzles can take some time to solve. I got several puzzles solved before I had to turn my attention elsewhere; I was disappointed to find that, when I returned, all my progress had been lost.

I'm weighing the tedium of resolving all the puzzles I'd previously solved against wanting to see the ending. It'd be nice if I didn't have to make that choice!

World 1, grid puzzle. My brain just doesn't do well with those, it's killing me.

Stuck on the first puzzle of world II...

There's no relationship I can find between the "piano keys" and the symbols. Nothing I do makes the piano keys react at all.

With no feedback it's really hard to develop any kind of gameplan...

Evan,

Remember you can use z to exit a puzzle. Look for clues.

Stuck on the wheel puzzle in world II. Do I have to figure out how rotate those symbols a tiny bit?

Reply

Very good. Only trouble is it's shorter than I'd've liked it to be.

Reply

hippodragon9, no. Symbol orientation never matters.

This sounds a lot like Continuity...

Something like Continuity, but instead of a platformer wrapped in a sliding puzzle it's a sliding puzzle wrapped in a platformer.

My only complaint is that this game is too short; does anyone know of other games similar to this? I greatly enjoy these types of puzzles.

Reply

@roomescaper55

you have to make the wheel on the left all "x"s, and the wheel on the right all slashes. the points where the wheels overlap have to be circles

i'm having trouble with that one too though

This is really a very smart game for those people who loves thinking logically. However, it take about 15 minutes, if you know what to do very fast for each puzzle.

Basic data explaining each puzzle, with hints:

01 is what I call the planetoid you LAND on. its entrance is just to the RIGHT of where you start.

Entry to 01:

The goal isn't to set a specific pattern, but rather to get all lights lit. Having all lights unlit will NOT work.

Hint:

Take note that the light toggling does NOT loop, i.e. clicking on an end piece only flips 2 lights. This is critical for solving it if the number of lights unlit isn't a multiple of 3.

01 puzzles:
Left:

The trick to this one is that you have to get ALL 4 elements of each shape into their respective boxes, and the circles back to the middle.

Hint:

Work in pairs, and DON'T separate the two circles. First try, set it up so that each 4-set has an adjacent pair of like sigils.

Right:

The goals is to get each column to match the pattern set in gray to the RIGHT. The buttons on bottom move their columns up one, and the buttons on the left move their rows right one block.

Hint:

Work one row at a time. Groups of 3 in a row are FAR easier to move into place than single elements.

Stuck in 01:
Just for those who missed it.

Notice the ladder in the middle? Press Z to attach to it; you'll jump off if you try to climb over the top.

10 is what I'm calling the second planetoid. Jump onto it and you'll land fine.

Entry to 10:

First, you have to beat 01's puzzles to get the halves of the code to get the buttons lit. The 'toggle' buttons for the code boxes are directly underneath the code boxes.
Next, you have to repeat the light puzzle from 01's entrance, but with the added twist of the lights having 3 modes: blue, red, and dark. All red or all blue should work.

01 left:

Two circles, whose rotations mirror each other. The goal is to get each loop's contents to match their external markings, with the circle pieces in the 'spare' marks.
Trading pieces between loops transfers two pieces from each loop to the other, so FOUR pieces are moved in total.

Hint:

Keep the circles on SEPARATE loops, including the 'spare' slots the circles go into. Move pieces to the circle they belong in FIRST, and THEN align the pieces to their spots.

10 right puzzle:

The goal is to fill the LEFT loop with X pieces, while filling the RIGHT loop with line pieces. Notice the 4 circles: two go in the intersections of the loops, while two go in the 'spare' slots.

Hint:

FIRST, get one circle, and its connected spare, completely filled correctly, THEN work on the other. Trust me, it'll be FAR easier this way.

End puzzle:
Get back to your shuttle, and you'll see the hardest puzzle of the game...

Figuring out why the developer put only 6 awesome puzzles into a game like this, without some sort of climactic final puzzle to melt your brains on!

Seriously, YOU'VE WON! Congrats on beating this! You may have gotten help, but everyone needs some from time to time, so don't worry about it!

I believe credit should be given where credit is due.

My only gripe, aside from the lack of rotation/advancement buttons in the opposite direction, is how sensitive the character's movements are. It might be the computer I'm using, but I had to quickly tap the left or right arrow keys sometimes so he would JUST align with the ladders/doorways; otherwise I'd overshoot and have to attempt it again. Either make it so that simple arrow taps (not delicate touches) advance the character smaller steps, or increase the "hitbox" of interaction with the doorways.

Aside from this, it's a fun game and a great way to kill a few minutes.

I'm sorry, but the righthand puzzle behind door 2 is just too bloody difficult, if it's even possible at all.

If the original distribution of symbols is random, I'm thinking you might actually have to get lucky before you can honestly complete that one.

Moving 4 pieces at once without constantly un-doing the work you've previously done is impossible as far as I can see. You can never segregate the symbols onto their proper wheels, therefore you cannot solve the puzzle. Very frustrating, unfair, and not a good puzzle if you have to have a "lucky" initial condition in order to finish.

@Nemo07

I found it a bit easier to do the following:

First, line up all the symbols on the bottom (let's pretend it's ||).
After that, find one of the symbols for the second row from the bottom (let's say v), and push it so it's in the fifth column. Push the sixth column up so that the }} symbol is on the row below that which contains the v. You should then be able to push that row once more to the right so that the v is on top of the || in the last column.
From here, push the last column up so that the || is on the row above the highest v of the remaining vs. Push THAT row (the one containing the highest v) until the v is in the fourth column. Push the fifth column up until the || is on the row below that v, then push the v above the ||. You now have two columns with a v directly above a ||; the sixth and fifth columns. Push the fifth column up so that the || is on the row above the highest remaining v, then repeat the above steps. In no time, you'll have the v and || rows properly aligned.

From there, I suggest returning the || to the bottom row, then repeating with the remaining symbols.

@Soto:

I hear you. And yet, amazingly, the walkthroughs are both so very poorly worded (an unusual thing here at JIG) so as to not hint at all at any allegedly "logical" approach. Which leads me to doubt that it exists, in spite of your assertions.

If people have really solved that one (ugh, and I peeked at the other Door 2 puzzle, and it looks even WORSE at first glance), what's the super-special catch?

[If someone were to write a well-written walkthrough that is easier to understand than the one(s) we have up there, I'd be very happy about that. I'd even replace the ones we have with yours. -Jay]
