What seems like a dream turns out to be reality... a very weird one. You wake up on the floor of a locked room with a voice over the telephone taunting you to find your way downstairs, but once you do, you'll find out your problems are just beginning in this short but appealingly oddball puzzle adventure game with a retro style.

BackDoor Door 1 Walkthrough

  1. Bedroom

Answer the phone. Be trolled by the phone.

At the top of the room, there is a desk with a pencil on it. Get the pencil.

Next to the desk at the top of the room, there is a bookcase, where you'll find a piece of paper. It's a diagram of the room with an X in the lower-right corner.

The X on the diagram points to the lower-right corner of the carpet. If you interact with it, it will give you a part of a light bulb.

Use the pencil on the chest at the foot of the bed. Receive another part of the light bulb.

Combine the two parts of the light bulb. Screw it on the lamp, turn the lamp on.

The secret compartment at the top of the room opens. Take the key from it.

Use the key to open the door on the bottom left. Go out.

  2. Corridor

Move the box out of the way and walk to the stairs.

  3. Living Room

After the cutscene, go behind the couch to the right of the phone. Push it forwards and take the coin.

Go up into the corner and take the piece of paper with numbers on it.

Use the paper on the safe in front of a door in the right corner. Take the circle key.

Go to the kitchen area and rummage through the trash can. Get the triangle key. Go back up the stairs.

  4. Corridor

Use the triangle key on the door in the corridor.

Congrats, you've found the bathroom! Take the towel from the edge of the tub. Go back downstairs.

  5. Living Room

Go to the oven, use the towel, retrieve the box opener. Makes perfect sense. Go upstairs to the bedroom.

  6. Bedroom

Open the box in the corner. It will give you a hint about using flat objects as screwdrivers. Go back to the living room.

  7. Living Room

Open ALL the boxes! Though the only relevant one in the living room is the one directly opposite the safe. There's a TV remote in it.

Combine the coin and the TV remote to get batteries.

Use the batteries on the thermostat on the wall on the other side of the boxes, next to the lamp.

Turn the thermostat off. Things are a little lighter now. Go upstairs to the bathroom.

  8. Bathroom

Use the change in gravity to push the cabinet on the crack in the floor. Go back to the living room.

  9. Living Room

Turn the thermostat back on, which will cause the cabinet to fall through the floor.

The cabinet fell on the table in the upper right part of the room. Next to it there is a book. Pick it up and read it.

Turn the thermostat back off and move the safe, unblocking the door.

Use the circle key to open the door.

  10. Basement Level 1

Examine the boxes and use the hints from the book to see which lamps you should turn on.

Turn on all the lamps apart from the one at the top.

Insert the book into the slot next to the door. Go through the door.

  11. Basement Level 2

Move the first box out of the way. Go up and move the middle of the three boxes up. Move the bottom box down, just until you can move around it and reach the door. If you get stuck, you can always exit and re-enter the room and the boxes will be reset. Go out the door at the bottom.

  12. The End

Keep walking through the two corridors. When you reach an open space with white paths, just go straight until you reach the phone. Talk to the phone.

Is it just coincidence the sprites look similar to those in Mother 3?

How do you combine items?

Reply

Open your inventory with spacebar, select "combine", and choose the two items. :)

Reply

That was pretty good - but I would like to know why

I can scribble on pictures but not old newspapers!

From the spacebar menu, DON'T SELECT EXIT to exit the menu. That exits the whole game without any extra "Are you sure?" prompt.

Reply

Intriiiiguingg. It wasn't so much the movement as the active areas for each item. I kept stumbling on the combining selection for some reason. It's a unique style, even with Flixel.

really cute. i like this a lot. looking forward to the next one. thanks. (also i like that everything makes sense... as much as a foray into a world between worlds can... what i mean is the puzzles are nice and logical. unlike some online games where its like "oh you found a kipper" and then half an hour of wandering round you find that kipper should have been used to slap the painting)

Is anyone else getting a "Error #2032" message? I can't seem to get beyond it.

After a little fumbling with controls I got into this. It's simple but implies some potentially interesting greater story. Here's hoping it develops!

When will they finally learn that in other countries people don't use QWERTY keyboards?

Very cute game, I really enjoyed it!

(This is probably a small bug, but it seems like when you use the remote controller with the tv, even though it says it's on/off, it doesn't change the tv screen lol)

How the heck you "use" an item? What key is it?

Reply

Did anyone else find the easter egg? :)

Reply

I like it. I *really* wanna see where they go with this, despite slightly clunky controls.

@thatguyfromvienna: You could always switch to a QWERTY layout to play the game...

Reply

@tinyflames you press x to use an item.

you guys making the second game yet?

Reply

man, i almost forgot about this, but I LOVE this one! Excited to see if it comes back!

Yeah, the developer posts weekly updates on his blog about Door 2. (most weeks) It seems like it's slowly coming along, though nowhere near finished yet from what I gather so far. But it's nice to see little bits of artwork partly revealed and knowing that he is still actively working on it.

Graphics seem very inspired by Mother/Earthbound, which is great for me since I love this series. After Undertale, I've been seeing a lot of that, but not always in a bad way, like this game. The story seems interesting so far, can't wait for part 2.
