JessSomething Amiss Chapter 3At long last, after a year and a half of waiting, Tucker Bowen has released Something Amiss Chapter 3, the final installment of his truly excellent point-and-click adventure saga. This chapter finds the intrepid escaped test subject Alice back in custody, awaiting her fate at the hands of persons unknown. But you're not going to stand for that, are you? No, Alice has been through enough, and she's ready to take control of her own destiny. It's finally time to get some answers!

The JIG community really loved the first two chapters of Something Amiss, and in light of this I am especially tickled to report that the third (and, sadly, final) episode is by far the best. It's clear why Tucker took over a year to complete this chapter; the game is a truly well-developed adventure, one that will take Alice through a dizzying array of different environments, enmesh her in intrigue and finally reveal the true nature of the mysterious experiment that so irrevocably changed her life. While happily quite long, the game never drags; the puzzles tread a fine line between creativity and logic, resulting in a satisfying experience that will challenge, but not confound, the player.

As in the first two installments, the interface is controlled by the cursor. To interact with a person or item, simply click and hold in the appropriate spot; a small menu will appear with options to talk to, examine or take him/her/it. You'll collect a large and diverse inventory of items while playing, a number of which will be used in several different ways during the course of the game. While the ways in which items are utilized might be questionable in the real world, they are never so outlandish as to necessitate a seemingly random "leap of logic"; I deeply appreciate this. Also like the previous chapters, Tucker has created some wonderful animation to bookend the game. This lends a unique style to the production, further enhancing the experience provided by an already very well-made game.

The game is not perfect, though. The plot does become a bit convoluted; so much is introduced and so many twists thrown in that at times it seems overworked. I didn't entirely understand how Alice's new abilities (which I will refrain from explicitly mentioning so as to not spoil the surprise) meshed with the events of the story. To be frank, however, I'm having a tough time coming up with much to complain about. Tucker took his time creating a polished game, and was clearly thoughtful in the choices he made.

While I'm truly sad that Something Amiss has come to an end, I am seriously excited to see what Tucker comes up with next. Over the weekend I replayed chapters 1 & 2 before tackling number 3, and doing so gave me a deep appreciation of Tucker's evolution as a designer; the dramatic growth and improvement over the three episodes is really pretty remarkable. If this is any indicator of his talent and potential, we have some fantastic games to look forward to in the future.

Any one else having trouble picking up items? I can click on an item, but the character just walks there and does nothing. happens in ie 7 and (sadly) firefox

To pick up/interact with items, you need to hold down the left mouse key on the item for a sec -- it will pop up a menu allowing you to examine, talk to, or take the item.

Reply

@thecrwth

have you made sure that you click and hold to have the verb icons pop up?

Something Amiss has slightly different gameplay mechanics to the standard p'n'c.

The games have been disabled for now so I'll have to wait! Sigh! I suppose I'll have to do the ironing instead!

Reply

The second game has been removed from the site. Without the password from the second, the third one is not playable.

It'd be better if the developers made sure they can host all three games simultaneously before making them depend on each other. Otherwise they force players to hunt for passwords off-site (thanks JIGuest!).

Also, the developer's hint page that JIG uses as its sole "walkthrough" for 1-2 gives a 404 Not Found error.

i cant pick anything up either.

Reply

This game proves once and for all that a bowl of noodles is life's most precious commodity.

Reply

Oh... and in case you have not worked it out... to pick up items, you hold down the left mouse button - this brings up options of what you can do with that item and then select pick up.

Reply

I just played through the series, and it was fun. In this one I found a puzzle that needs outside information, which I think spoils the game somewhat.

Reply

What puzzle was that?

Reply

Just begun but im havin real trouble in pullin out the pin from the smoke bomb.
How do I do it?

Reply

Although- with each of them, I get a "loading game data" screen, followed by a header & side-ads and a blank where the game should be-

using Firefox on a Mac, I'll try Safari, maybe that might make a difference?? Once in a while it does-

Reply

All three seem to work on Safari, I get the right game screen to come up, but I had to try twice on level one- go figure-

Reply

@aine morgan and thecrwth:

to pick things up, click and hold down your mouse. a little menu will pop up on the item. the action items chance slightly depending on what the item is, but generally the first action on the left is either to talk to or eat the object, then on top you can examine the object, then on the right there is a little hand that will pick up the object.

pressing "e" will take you to the main menu, and you can go to the "help" section (not "hints!") The help menu will give you basic info on the game play.

Reply

Yawning? You mean me, posting too much? You're right- sorry!!!

Reply

I still have some unused items, most notably

the allergy medication

.

I don't have time to replay right now, but it seems like there might be multiple endings.

I really liked this game. I could do without her yawning, though. Also, I found the ending a bit unsatisfying. Maybe because it was

so pro covert government ops.

. Just a personal bias of mine. Also, it bothered me that sometimes dialogue options would disappear before I had a chance to use them. But I guess that increases the replay value.

Reply

I am near the end

on top of the train. While I was climbing the ladder to the top, my anti-malware went off and it didn't finish loading. Now when I load my game, I am on top of the train, the only things I can see is the metal surface I am on and Alice, and the tunnel is black and white shapes flying by. I can't go anywhere or do anything but walk around. I am guessing I need to restart, but is the ending worth it?

Reply
mixedmetaphor October 22, 2008 2:28 PM

Yeah, what's with the yawning, anyway? And why do I have to wait for her to finish yawning before I can do anything else? Super annoying.

I wish this game had some obvious way of putting down an item that's stuck to your cursor. I can't seem to find it at least.

ThemePark, try double clicking to put down an item.

JIGuest,be decent. Spoiler yourself, please.

Reply

Fantastic, it's good to have straightforward logical puzzles for once, though they could have been more taxing. For me not to need any hints is unusual!

Reply

The links in the JIG reviews have been updated. All three chapter links are working fine now. :)

Reply

The problem with a long time between episodes is that now I'm going to have to play the first two over again. Fortunately, this isn't a complaint. (Now if only Tipping Point will release more of itself...)

Reply

I loved it! This is one of the rare times I'm actually able to finish this type of game without spoilers. Game overall is logical, although somethings like the

peanuts, grease and heat in the noodles

to me is rather silly and when those times came I just ended up trying random things on the objects until something works. And the

John

guy still scares me. I wish there was a sequel where he

(john)

will force me into some mission using my

newly acquired abilities

.

Ogremindes -- you're talking about the

password for the Jefferson Monument, which comes from the quote in the jail?

I confess I looked it up offline too, but

if you go to the steps of the Jefferson Monument, you'll see the end of the quotation, including the key word. So it's fair; you can find the password without using outside information.

Seems kind of sloppy to have the password be a word from the quote on the monument, but the secret super ops people don't seem to run a very tight ship in this game. ;-)

I really love this series -- the puzzles are pretty easy, but the atmosphere of all the different areas is breathtaking. But what's a New York subway sign doing in the DC Metro?

Also I wonder if there is any way in to the door next to the conference room? The one with the panel full of complicated buttons and numbers. (it doesn't show up on screen any more. Before it came up in a close up.

Reply

Even with a decent broadband connection, you still end up watching the loading screen longer than playing the game. This is especially true when you've made your way to one scene and simply need to return to another scene (which is a few scenes back) to collect something you forgot, or didn't realize you needed. It spoils the flow of the game. Surely once a scene is loaded it should stay in the browser's cache?
Or perhaps there should be a downloadable version.

Reply

Fun game, but

it would have been nice to choose whether or not to help the feds. Personally, I wouldn't have minded being able to tell them all to eat it...

Reply

Firefox retains the rooms in your browser's cache, so you'll only have to load it once. This may not be true for other browsers. So I recommend Firefox and at least Flash 8 to get the best playing experience. A downloadable version of the game may be available in the future once I'm sure all the kinks have been worked out.

Thanks for playing.

It is a great series, but I must say I was rather disappointed with the final episode. The mood and story was not as good as I had come to expect!

I loved this series. Every puzzle had a logical solution, the graphics were amazing, the difficulty was just right and the story was intriguing. The only problems I had were long load times and the occasional bug, but they are but pebbles sitting in the shadow of a monolith constructed of the good qualities of the series.

It made me want to go back and play the Quest games (Space Quest and King's Quest).

@Tucker

I'm on broadband using Firefox and this game still lags for me, even when, like a previous poster pointed out, I'm returning to a scene I've already been. I've got a bandwidth monitor on and I can see my bandwidth spiking every time this happens so I am literally reloading the page, not just seeing the load animation. I've also timed out a couple of times while waiting for the game to load. It has to be server side because I am not lagging on any other site.

Reply

Load times might increase if the server is really busy. In a few days when traffic dies down I bet it will be faster.

Also, I'll post here when the downloadable version is ready. That'll help people with long loading times.

@Cenovis

Try upping the limit of your browser cache to 50 or 100mb.

This VASTLY improved the loading times for me, and made the game much more enjoyable!

wow, what a great game.
Excellent plot and awesome gameplay
wish there were more chapters to play :)

Wonderful story! I played all three in one sitting (and neglected making dinner, but oh well).

I noticed the yawning only happened if she did something that didn't progress the game. It's like the opposite of the fist pump when she solves something.

I find it intriguing that there's a book based off of this. From looking at it on Amazon, it's similar, but the lead character appears older and married.

I can't find the

snowball

and my game doesn't load. I get to a certain point and it says "game loading", and all I get is a black screen and sound of wind blowing. What should I do? This is after I put in the password

mind

Am \I missing some software or what? Or is it just the traffic?

@ Faati

Make sure you have the latest version of Flash. (at least 8) And I recommend the Firefox browser as well. I've never had any problems with that configuration.

Hello there. I did everything, but

before meeting the federal agent I went to the obelisk and no one was there. I went to the train station and downloaded data from the slot guarded by the lasers. Then I went back and gave the USB drive to the federal agent. Now I return to the train station and there is no train!

What should I do? Can anyone help me? Thanks!

Reply

@Donkit
Sounds like a glitch in the system. To get past it I would recommend replaying and...

after you get the data from backscatter's underground HQ go directly to the Jefferson monument and talk to the agent. Then go to the Washington monument...you should see lots of police activity around it.

I'll investigate to see whether the glitch is an isolated one or not.

Problem!

After

doing the thumbdrive and talking to John

my game refreshed for some reason (probably something I did).

I never got to

complete the call and it doesn't ring anymore

And I have no idea what to do from here. Help?

I suggest using the walkthrough and try the next step. If it doesn't work, you probably need to re-start your game.

Thanks Pam I'm out now! I restarted the game because

I'm not sure whether I turned the environmental control off again the first time, like it said in the note. I couldn't get back to the shelter to check. In the re-run I made sure I did and the electricity worked!

Is this a glitch?

Reply

Tucker Bowen, Something Amiss is something else. It is one of the best point click games out there. I finished playing the game. And yes the problem was the flash player.

Pleasse give us more point click games. I can't wait for your new games to be released.
Good luck with your future prpjects.

ok folks I am still confused with the end of the game, even after reading the walkthroughs...

When going to the washington monument, down the elevator, and to the train...I don't see a train!! and where's the ladder?? And I read in the comments , that u have to take out the thumbdrive from the data port to reveal a ladder, but the guy in the trenchcoat has the thumbdrive!!

Please help me I don't want to start over if I don't have too.

I've located a small bug at the end of the game.

For a small number of players, the train at the end departs early, allowing Auburn to escape! I believe I fixed this. If you go directly to the Washington Monument bunker after handing over the thumbdrive to the Feds, you should be able to catch her now.

Unfortunately, if you've encountered this bug before I fixed it, you'll have to play through the game again from the beginning.

I accomplished almost every step on my own.

Where I stuck and had to see the walkthrough is point 21. How do you know what the codeword is?? I couldn't figure it out, and I haven't seen it anywhere...

Reply

Hi Bosco,

The codeword is something to do with the Jefferson Memorial. Look around the columns to see if you can find anything. Maybe something carved into the wall?

Thanks Tucker!
I was a noob :)

Anyway, it was a brilliant game. I guess the best, I've ever seen in flash, in many points of view (eg story/ control/ graphics/ trailer/ overall-feeling).

I'm always wondering if such a complex work is worth involving the time and efforts to give it to the public for free. But I am glad about it.

Congrats to everyone who participated!

When trying to save I get a box with a - (minus)sign but don't seem to be able to do anything with it, is it me?

Reply

Monty,
If you didn't give your game a name in the beginning it'll show up as blank when you try to save later. If this isn't the culprit try upgrading to the latest version of Flash or try another browser.

Good game, graphics are very well done. Storyline is compelling.
For a PAC: 9/10! Kudos to the makers.

To the peeps pissing and moaning about this being the oldest game on the net: You all must be 105 years old right? 10 more likely... Get a life.

Okay I'm SUPER annoyed now, so after my last post about getting stuck from a buggish thing I give up on this game for a good three months. So yesterday I go through it and get a little further than where I left off, saving under a different account name, but hey, it was working. So today when I go to finish the game I started yesterday to finish is gone and I'm left with the bugged game. HEEELLPP! I SO do not feel like starting this game YET AGAIN.

Reply

There is a known bug that occurs when you're in a conversation with another character and then quit the game (or press a key to go to the menu). If that happens the game gets corrupted sometimes.

You're best bet is unfortunately to start a new game. To avoid this, always finish a conversation before saving or quitting.

If you keep getting thrown back into your old frozen game, try emptying your cache before starting a new one.

I'm trying to fix the bug. Thanks for your patience!

This really is an amazing game! I had not too much trouble with the bugs, and really really enjoyed it! Congratulations!
One thing: I would have loved to be able to ask all the possible questions.
And I looooooved the ridiculous answers when you try talking to things, or banging them up.
Great!

I have just found this game and have thoroughly enjoyed playing it but, can't seem to finish it.
When I meet the indian at the top of the cliff I try to turn the circuit box back on and it says it trips immediately.
Also when I try to kiss the indian it says not until the third date?
Help please?

To Clair:

It's been awhile since I played this game. If you haven't used the walkthrough at the top of this page yet, the part you're on starts around step #90.

If I remember correctly,

you don't have to successfully kiss the Indian... just make the attempt. And you sometimes have to come back and do the breaker box a second time.

I hope this helps. :)

What a great story!!
A fascinating story like this one is what's missing in almost all point and click adventures.
When I met John, I really wasn't sure anymore who were the good guys and who were the bad guys. Even now, at the end, I'm not completely sure I did the right thing.
One really gets INVOLVED in the story, and it's the first time I experienced that with a simple point-and-click game. Talking to characters often seems silly, but in this game, it wasn't.
Thanks!! Keep up the good work!

Help me! I cannot get the thumbnail out of the terminal. It just keeps bringing me to the screen over and over. Where is the thumbnail thing?

...I clicked the link for the game, after playing through the first two chapters, but all I'm getting is a Page Load Error saying the page isn't there. After the great review and loving the first two chapters, I really want to play this one, too...did it go somewhere else or something? :(

Help please!

the circuit box keeps tripping and won't turn on. What do i have to do to make it stay on?

Thanks :) It's a great game so far i want to finish it!!

Reply

@Sallybear

You have to turn off the water that runs through the pipes first. Otherwise, the circuit will keep tripping. Remember, you can always look at the hints in the game menu if you get stuck! Good luck.

Does anything bad happen if you

don't warn John about Autumn's peanut allergy?

I accidentally clicked the wrong thing and didn't do so. The game never told me what happened to her after.
