...Yeah, I'll just come right out and say it, salt has nothing to do with these puzzles. You've got four puzzles to tackle in this week's Letters In Boxes challenge. To play, click on the puzzle below to open the image up in a new window. When you think you've found an answer, go to your browser's address bar and change the image's filename (in this case, "start22") to your answer, making sure you stay in the same directory and maintaining the same file extension. If you're right, you'll zoom through to the next puzzle. If you're wrong, you'll get an error message, but you can always back up and try again.
This batch of puzzles contains four puzzles to solve. On the fourth puzzle, you'll find the email address for sending your final answer. We'll hand out a prize to the first correct entry we receive, plus one additional randomly-selected correct entry. Please include your Casual Gameplay account display name with your entry. You must be at least 13 years of age to enter. Only one submission per participant, please. Offer void where prohibited. Here are this week's answers:
Puzzle 1
The grid in the first puzzle contains every letter except for C, E, J, O, P, R, S, and T. (There's no particular reason why the remaining letters were strung through the grid in an up-and-down fashion.) Rearrange these letters, and you get PROJECTS.
Puzzle 2
Puzzle 2 Answer
This puzzle is a magic square, in which every row, column, and diagonal add up to 34, using the numbers 1 to 16. Once the puzzle is filled in, change all the numbers to letters, with A=1,. B=2, etc. Reading down in the first column, you'll find the word MELD.
Puzzle 3
Puzzle 3 Answer
The third puzzle is a magnet puzzle, where each rectangular block in the puzzle is either a magnet (with a positive or negative pole in each square) or a neutral block (with no magnetic charge). As a rule, the positive pole of one magnet can't be next to the positive pole of another magnet, and the same applies to the negative poles. The numbers along the top and side tell how many of each pole appear in that row or column. To practice this puzzle on your own, you can take a look at Magnets from the Simon Tatham Puzzle Collection.
I won't go into specific details on how to solve the puzzle, but I will suggest that one way to start solving the puzzle is to determine which blocks must contain a magnet (such as the fourth column, with three positive poles and three negative poles, meaning every square in that column must contain a column). Once you've solved the puzzle, you will find the word GRINDSTONE spelled out in the boxes covered by the neutral blocks.
Puzzle 4
Puzzle 4 Answer
The final puzzle is solved by placing the nine tiles on the right into the grid so that a crossword puzzle is formed. The clues, though shuffled, all correspond to a word in the crossword. The only word not paired to another standard clue was ESCALATOR, your final answer.
Winners will be announced soon!
