Test Subject Arena

Test Subject Arena

Tricky Nitrome has done it again! We've guided the little blue piece of protoplasm test subject through two incredibly enjoyable series of experiments. Now it and you faces your greatest opponent yet: a person next to you at the keyboard! Yes, it's Green vs. Blue in the multiplayer-only Test Subject Arena.

Games based solely around local versus are rare in the casual gaming sphere, but should you coerce a friend into the player 2 spot, you'll have fun bouncing, blasting, and bursting each other. And hey... you can play as the Green Test Subject! He skips rope with himself whenever he scores a kill! I can't be alone in being excited by that fact.

The sudden appearance of a two player variation of a popular game about an imprisoned subject carrying out experiments under the watchful eye of a mysterious overseer may have suspicious timing. I cannot, however, fault it in execution. The portals cough cough that fill each of the 14 arenas make for a unique fighting game experience, and one that begs to be shared. This is a game that more than passes the test.

OMG Tricky, I love it. (and I don't mean the game). If Steve could intentionally leave out a "T" in the solution to "letters in boxes #3", then you really one-upped him by leaving out the t in 'about' when you critiqued this game. Never mind that you went back and corrected it. I saw it in the raw form and think you should have left it in. Really! I swear! Tooottttaaalllyyy meant it to happen didn't ya!!!

The controls are in the settings, yeah this reminds me about co-op.
The help button should give more explanation.
What are you talking about binks? This is not boxes with letters!

Dear Nitrome, please fix the stupid doctor that shakes the box.

I'm really excited to play this game with my brother at the weekend, but couldn't Nitrome have proof-read the game? There's loads of spelling mistakes like "enzimes". I know I'm being a bit of a grammar Nazi, but Nitrome are a professional company and I feel the presentation of their games with regards to spelling has been down a bit lately :-/

yo! the "Q" key is a gun for the guy on the left... WHERE is the other weapon? (weapon key, I mean) my fingers are killing themselves trying to find it.

Check settings (I think it is slash)

So... correct me if I'm wrong, but the winning strategy here seems to be: score the first kill, find a nice corner, duck, and hold the fire key until time runs out.

I played a few rounds with a friend, and the winner was always the one who employed the above tactic. On some maps, you might be able to drop onto a camping opponent from above and kill them with a melee attack, but even then the camping player seems to have a slight advantage as the subjects' melee range appears to extend farther up than it does down.

Really disappointing, because I really like the concept behind this one. If anyone finds a good counter to this strategy, I'd love to hear it. I think if there was a way to hit your opponent from the front while he's ducking and firing, that'd go a long way towards making the game more interesting. Something like a high-low blocking system like in one-on-one fighting games?

Also, and this is more a general comment on local versus in Flash, but many keyboards complain if you press more than two letter/punctuation keys at once. We ran into a bit of trouble and had to switch keyboards when we realized that player one couldn't duck and shoot while player two was shooting, because the keyboard wasn't accepting q, s, and / at the same time.

Nitrome has updated the game due to comments that have been made. The game now clearly shows the default keys to save confusion and also have adjusted the gameplay so that players that squat in the corners can be killed more easily with the melee attack.

As JK said, melee attacks. It's fun playing it with a younger siblings. You can distract them by rapidly tapped left and right to do the booger dance, then dropping down to smack them with a couple few shots, gloat, and then have the second shot hit yourself moments later. I'm always pleased with Nitrome stuff. So, good work.
